Author's note: First of all, I want to apologise for taking so long with this update. I had a hard time getting back into the groove of certain stories these past couple of months, but I'm working my way through them once more. With that said, this story is going to have three parts instead of two, because I wanted to give you guys something for the long wait and I didn't want to half-arse the ending either. That's the reason why this chapter is shorter than the previous one, but I figured it was better than nothing.

Part 2
"How much do you know about our family?"
It was a week after Naruto and Hikaru had been attacked in the woods and Naruto was slowly starting to shake off the creepy sensation that a villager would find them again. Yesterday he'd been in the forest for the first time since the attack, keeping close to Sasuke out of instinct. They had stayed clear from the spot where the man had attacked them, but nevertheless Naruto had been on edge the entire time and he hated that. The forest had become his home just as much as it was a home for Sasuke and their family, so the fact that he didn't feel safe anymore … It stung. Badly.
Deidara sat up from where he'd been curled up in his own nest, blinking sleepily up at him. Itachi and Sasuke were occupying themselves with Hikaru and a couple of the other young kids, teaching them how to fluently change forms. Fortunately Hikaru had bounced back quickly. He'd only clung onto Naruto for the first three nights and hadn't left him out of his sight for the first four days, but he was becoming better now. Being distracted by his father, his uncle and his cousins did do a lot to help, of course.
"Quite a bit, depending on what you want to know, I suppose, un," Deidara answered and ran his fingers through his long hair, tying it into a ponytail. He crossed his legs and patted the space in front of him. "Of course you might be better off asking one of the Uchiha directly, but I can try to help with whatever's on your mind, un."
Slowly Naruto sank down in the offered spot, gnawing on his lower lip. He felt rather queasy, his stomach performing several uncomfortable rolls, and a part of him wanted to get up and leave, just forget about the whole thing. If he did that, however, then he wasn't sure if he would ever have a full night of rest again; his mind too busy to unwind. The idea had been stuck in his mind for days now, unwilling to disappear, and he needed to discuss it with at least one person, if only to find out whether it was a feasible idea or not.
"How many people have taken the Bite so far?" he questioned; his voice barely above a whisper. It wouldn't matter if he whispered or not, though, because if the wolves wanted, they would be able to hear him no matter how softly he talked. They didn't listen in out of a sense of respect for each other, but they most certainly could. The whispering was more for his benefit, he supposed.
Easier to ignore the twisting of his stomach if he thought nobody else could hear him.
Deidara raised an eyebrow. "I'm going to assume you are referring to the Changing Bite and not the Mating one," he said calmly, playing with one of his bracelets.
"Yeah, that one." Naruto nodded. "How many have taken it in our family?"
The Fae frowned in contemplation. Outside one of the kids screamed delighted, followed by a low howl. It didn't take long before several howls joined in; these ones far from mature yet so it sounded more like yipping than actual howling. It had both their mouths twitching with amusement before they sobered up.
"I know of three who accepted the Bite in all the centuries the Uchiha have lived here, un," Deidara said, pursing his lips. "Mikoto told me about them."
"So all three of them turned into a wolf?" Naruto asked interestedly.
He knew the second Bite was to change a human into a wolf, but after that one conversation he and Sasuke had had about it, back in his old hometown, before they had even officially become mates, neither of them had brought it up again. At least not in the sense of actually discussing it.
The dark look crossing Deidara's face had Naruto tensing up in reaction. "Two survived, one didn't," he replied clipped, his frown deepening.
"What – what happened to the third one?" Naruto asked tentatively.
Something akin to an ice cold hand seemed to grip his chest and tighten around it painfully. Somehow he hadn't considered the idea that accepting the Changing Bite didn't automatically mean that you would change into a wolf. Was it naïve of him that he hadn't even thought about that possibility before?
Deidara sighed softly and rubbed his left cheek. "Her body couldn't handle the change," he said quietly. "The stress the Bite put on her was too great and she died before the Bite could fully take. This was around fifty years ago, I think."
"Oh." Naruto wrangled his hands together. "Was – was there a reason why her body couldn't handle the change?"
"Not sure. According to what Mikoto told me, this human always had had a rather frail health," Deidara murmured, his gaze unfocused. "I think that is why she wanted the Bite, hoping that it would make her stronger. Instead it ended in her death. That is unfortunately a risk with the Changing Bite, un."
"Right," Naruto said faintly, staring down at his hands.
One out of three dying didn't sound that bad, but it still wasn't that good or reassuring either. How bad had this woman's health been that she hadn't survived the Bite?
"Did she have the Mating Bite?"
"She did, yes," Deidara confirmed. "But the Mating Bite didn't have that much of an impact on her, considering she was a woman to start with."
At Naruto's confused look, he elaborated, "The Mating Bite had to change certain parts within you in order for you to be able to give Sasuke-kun cubs, un." He smiled when Naruto's cheeks heated up. "But as a woman, she already had the life bearing parts to begin with, so all the Mating Bite did was bind her to her Mate fully. That didn't put as much of a strain on her body as the form altering one, however."
"Oh." That made senses, of course. The less a Mating Bite had to change, the less risk someone ran. It made him realise just how lucky he'd been that he had come out of the Mating Bite unscathed, considering how much his body had had to change to accommodate the Bite.
"So why the sudden interest in this particular Bite?" Deidara side-eyed him.
"Just curious," Naruto muttered, looking away, but of course he didn't fool Deidara. He doubted he would have been able to fool anybody.
"If this is about what happened a week ago," Deidara said gently, "please don't let that influence your decision about the Bite. You should take the Bite because you want to, un, not because you think you have to."
"I know that," Naruto said defensively. "And I'm not thinking about getting the Bite just because of that. It just made me start thinking about it again, that's all."
Sasuke had never pressured him about taking any of the Bites and he wasn't pushing him about this last Bite either. All the same, Naruto was aware of the fact that Sasuke was hoping he would get the Changing Bite eventually as it would allow him to have the same elongated lifespan as Sasuke's.
After Sasuke had talked about the Changing Bite, they hadn't mentioned it again; the both of them having become too busy with taking care of Hikaru and getting settled into the Uchiha compound. Still, the idea had always lingered in the back of Naruto's mind, unwilling to completely let go of him.
"Do you …" Naruto paused, trying to figure out the best way to formulate his question without it coming across as too morbid. He deemed it impossible when after a short silence he still hadn't found a better way while Deidara looked at him inquiringly. He sighed, resigning himself to the morbid tone clinging to his question. "Do you think my body would be able to deal with the Changing Bite?"
He barely dared to look at Deidara, only doing so when the silence became too stifling. When he glanced at the Fae, the blond man was studying him thoughtfully as he braided a single lock of his hair.
"You're not weak, un," Deidara said eventually, leaving his hair alone. "Your body already went through a severe change with the Mating Bite and nothing went wrong during that time, right?"
"I don't think so." Naruto furrowed his eyebrows.
That particular night was still fuzzy, even several years later. It had been the night Hikaru had been conceived, but he had felt so overwhelmed during that time, both because of the Bite changing him and the sex, that his mind had barely retained anything. He had survived it, however, clearly, and Sasuke hadn't looked worried at all by the time Naruto had resurfaced, so he doubted anything bad had occurred.
"Then it is reasonable to assume that your body will deal with the Changing Bite equally as well, un," Deidara said confidently. "I do not claim to be all-knowing, but if your body could deal with the stress of a Mating Bite and the ensuing pregnancy, then you are strong enough to handle the Changing Bite as well, un."
Naruto couldn't stop the sigh of relief escaping him. He hadn't considered before how dangerous the Changing Bite could be until Deidara had mentioned the death of that woman, which was stupid, he acknowledged. Of course any Bite messing with the way a body was made up could be dangerous. He supposed his naivety stemmed from the fact that his Mating Bite had gone so well, even when he couldn't remember much of it, that he had assumed the Changing Bite would behave in a very similar manner.
The last thing he wanted was to leave Sasuke and their son behind. If he could survive the Mating Bite, however, then surely the Changing Bite wouldn't be that much worse?
"If you are considering taking the Changing Bite, un," Deidara began cautiously, "then I do need to warn you."
"Warn me?" Naruto furrowed his eyebrows. "Haven't you done that just now?"
"I'm not talking about the fact that it could be a strain on your body," Deidara said, smiling briefly. His burst of amusement was brief, disappearing as quickly as it had shown up. "No, I'm talking about the fact that in order for the Changing Bite to be successful, your body needs to be as pure as possible."
"I don't follow," Naruto said blankly. Pure as possible? Like virgin pure? Because if that was the case, then he would never be able to accept the Changing Bite! He was far from a virgin anymore; the thought making his cheeks sting slightly.
But wait, that couldn't be the case, right? After all, the woman had also had the Mating Bite before she'd accepted the Changing Bite. He thought it was reasonable to assume that she hadn't been a virgin by that point anymore either.
Ah, but she had died of course …
"You are drinking the tea in order to avoid Sasuke-kun's seed taking, no?" Deidara looked at him knowingly, smiling amused when Naruto promptly blushed.
"Ah, erm, yes, yes, I am," Naruto stuttered and cleared his throat. Deidara himself had recommended him this tea around six months after Hikaru had been born and so far the tea hadn't failed him at all. No matter how many times he and Sasuke made love to each other, the wolf's seed couldn't take.
"Well, in order for the Changing Bite to be successful you would have to stop taking the tea at least a week before you accept the Bite, un," Deidara said, swiping his long, blond hair over his shoulder. "The herbs in the tea could badly interact with the Bite otherwise."
"Then I stop drinking the tea," Naruto said and shrugged. "Not much of a problem." He could start taking it again after the Bite had been successful.
"Yes, about that." Deidara cleared his throat; this time he was oddly the one with flushed cheeks. "When you accept the Changing Bite, there is a high chance that you will … become rather amorous in order to cope with the energy flowing through you from the Bite, un."
"Amorous?" Naruto repeated; his voice slightly more higher pitched than he would have liked.
"It is very likely that you will want to have sex with Sasuke-kun," Deidara stated bluntly. "And without the tea in your system, that means that - "
"I might get pregnant again," Naruto finished blankly.
Right. Well. He hadn't thought about that.
AN2: So next part will be the last one. I will do my best to not keep you waiting for this long again! Updates of my other stories will also appear soon; I'm doing my best to work on those.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next part! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
