Author's note: I'm slowly chipping away at my backlog of stories, yay! Progress is being made finally! So yes, here's finally the second part! I'm happy to see that there's still so much interest for this particular universe!
A part of this chapter will probably be familiar as parts of it were taken from the prequel :)
Thanks to the following reviewers: TeslaCronos and Deandraquin (That's very sweet of you!)
Warnings: Some minor angst; some time skips
I hope you'll enjoy this second part!
Part 2
It had never been his intention to fall in love with someone at the castle, let alone one of the princes himself. Naruto had been more than content to keep to himself, spent his days reading or walking around in the large garden, and hide in his room whenever it became a bit too crowded in the quarters. His life had become a routine, yes, but it was a routine he did not mind; a routine which saw him fed and kept safe from any kind of harm.
He had never meant to fall in love with the youngest prince. To be frank, he had never even thought he would come in his vicinity, let alone talk to him. Because the royal family themselves did not visit the Comfort Quarters, that had become more than obvious after a couple of months.
There was no protocol keeping them from the quarters; no ancient rule that said they couldn't amuse themselves with an Omega. King Fugaku was happily married to Queen Mikoto and as such he had no need to visit the Comfort Quarters. Not that marriage kept other people from visiting the Omega. Several staff members were married, yet they had no problem showing up in the quarters to seek out some fun with one of the Omega. The King, however, was one of those who took fidelity to their spouse seriously and therefore never entertained a visit.
The two princes were not married nor were they courting anyone – at least not if rumours had to be believed – but neither one of them showed any interest in the quarters either. Not for a lack of trying on some Omega's part, though. Some of them were particularly insisted and kept trying again and again to attract one of the princes' attention. Naruto had yet to see any of them succeeding. Sometimes a part of him wanted them to succeed, if only because then they would finally stop their moaning and whining about how no prince wanted to look twice at them.
Perhaps one of the princes might show interest if these same Omega weren't so eager to bed anyone who offered them a second glance. Not that Naruto would shame them for it; while he wasn't interested in bedding strangers, a lot of other Omega were and that was their right. Whenever he heard one of them whining about the princes' disinterest, he wondered whether they had ever considered that perhaps the two brothers took after their father and they considered fidelity to be very important?
He kept his thoughts to himself, however; unwilling to call anyone's ire upon him.
Just as he had learnt to block out the noises at night, he also learnt to block out their whining. Whenever their complaining reached a new level, he would simply leave the quarters and retreat to the library for a while where he could find peace in the solitude of the place and in the many books stocked high on shelves reaching from the ceiling to the floor. He had received confirmation early on that Omega were allowed to visit the library and even take books with them for a while if they so desired. The royal family was perhaps so generous, because not many Omega had learnt to read, so the amount of books leaving the library was quite nihil to even neglectable.
The library was where Naruto had his first encounter with the youngest prince.
Karin had asked him to read something fairy tale like to her, as she never had had the opportunity to hear stories like that and she'd heard from others that they could be quite magical. Having no problem with it, Naruto had gone to the library to search for a suitable book.
He finally found the perfect book after nearly twenty minutes of going up and down past the shelves and triumphantly he pressed it against his chest. He hoped she would like the stories; if not, he was certain he would be able to find something else that would suit her fancy.
At this hour of the day, the library was always empty and usually Naruto would take advantage of the solitude and curl up in one of the comfortable chairs scattered across the large space. Karin was waiting for him back at the quarters, though, so instead of settling down in his favourite chair – which was right next to a window, offering a beautiful view of the garden with the fountain – he walked back to the door, wondering meanwhile whether she had got her hands on those delicious biscuits that a particular guard seemed to love giving to her.
There was someone else on the other side of the door. The unexpected presence when the door opened had him nearly walking straight into the other person and he nary avoided bumping into them by stumbling back, surprised. When he glanced up, his breath hitched when he met black eyes. They were smouldering with anger and as he watched, the youngest prince – Prince Sasuke, his brain supplied – stiffened.
Worried he had somehow managed to offend the prince, Naruto could feel his cheeks flush with embarrassment and he bent his head, hoping to rectify whichever faux pas he had just committed. "I apologise, Your Royal Highness," he said and hurried away, the back of his neck pricking uncomfortably with the prince's stare.
"You found a good book?" Karin greeted him, already seated on his bed. Her smile faltered when she got a good look of his face. "Hey, what's wrong? Did somebody bother you?"
"No, I'm – I almost bumped into Prince Sasuke on accident when I was leaving the library," he admitted and crawled onto the bed as well. "He seemed angry about something. I hope I wasn't the one who angered him."
She tilted her head to the left. "I wouldn't really worry about it," she said soothingly. "Prince Sasuke is not known to lash out, not even when some Omega are a bit too freely in their pursuit of him. You might have just caught him in a bad mood. Although," she smirked now, "I'd say he still looks incredibly handsome even in a foul mood, wouldn't you say?"
"I don't know," he lied and cleared his throat, opening the book. "I didn't get a good look at his face."
"Sure you didn't," she snickered but easily settled down next to him, too eager to hear her first fairy tale to keep pestering him about the prince.
Which was a good thing because Naruto wouldn't know what else to say about him. For sure Prince Sasuke was one of the most handsome men he had met. But he was a prince and Naruto was a mere Omega; there was no point in considering his looks or his personality when they had no reason to meet again.
Except they kept meeting from that point on. The second time Naruto encountered him again was once more in the library. This time Naruto wasn't searching for a book to read to either Karin or Haku or both, but he had nestled himself down in his favourite chair, getting lost in one of the rare adventure books he had discovered.
Sunlight was pouring through the window, warming up the room considerably and Naruto caught himself dozing off several times; the sun's warmth lulling him to sleep.
"You appear to be very fond of reading, don't you?"
The unexpected voice had Naruto yelping loudly and he flailed his hands, nearly falling out of the chair in shock. The book he'd been reading went tumbling down to the floor, but before it could hit the carpet, a hand snatched it up. Naruto reddened when he looked up, only to find Prince Sasuke studying the title with interest.
"My apologies, Your Royal Highness; I will take my leave," Naruto said hurriedly, practically jumping off his chair. He froze when the older man raised a hand in the air.
"No need to leave on my account," Prince Sasuke said calmly. "You're more than free to stay here. I must admit, however, that it does not happen very often that Omega will read here." He gave the book back to the blond.
"My – adoptive parents taught me how to read and write, Your Royal Highness," Naruto answered haltingly. Even five months after escaping that hellish house, his mind still shied away from thinking about the couple. His skin no longer bore any scars, thanks to Tsunade's incredible medicine, but the memories were hard to shake off.
"Did they now?" Prince Sasuke hummed and sat down in the chair opposite of Naruto.
The Omega slowly sat down as well when the dark haired man gestured at his armchair. "How are you settling in? It has been a few months since you arrived at the castle, no?"
A bit bemused, Naruto replied, "I'm settling in quite well, thank you for asking, Your Royal Highness."
"Forgive my curiosity," Prince Sasuke said and there was a faint smile playing around his lips, which made Naruto stare at him, because unfairly that small smile made the man even more handsome than before. "Do you have a favourite genre you like to read? Some little birds have told me you can often be found in the library."
Stunned at the ordinary question it took a bit before Naruto could gather his wits about to answer. He and the prince spent the next hour together in the library, discussing the latest books they had read. The conversation felt so normal, so mundane, that Naruto found himself relaxing bit by bit, even if a voice in the back of his mind kept screaming at him that he was sitting here, conversing with the prince!
"Unfortunately I have a meeting I need to attend," Prince Sasuke ended their conversation with a regretful look. "I enjoyed talking with you."
"Oh, erm, I enjoyed talking with you as well, Your Royal Highness," Naruto said, a bit flustered. His flustered state only worsened when the prince smiled at him before he rose up. Naruto only just remembered in time to rise up as well; his fingers digging into the spine of his book.
"I look forward to having another discussion with you soon. Enjoy the rest of your day," Prince Sasuke smiled and then he was gone, leaving just as silently as he had shown up.
And Naruto? His cheeks felt weirdly hot for the rest of the day for reasons he could not discern.
It became a routine of sorts after that. He would randomly encounter the prince in the library or in one of the corridors or even outside in the garden and they would start talking about whatever caught their fancy that day. Sometimes it was the latest book Naruto had read or the latest news outside the castle. At times it could be as simple as the flowerbed which had finally started blooming fully.
As they talked more and more often, Naruto could almost see how the walls Prince Sasuke kept tightly erected around him started crumbling apart when he was with him. Neutral – safe – subjects like books slowly made way for the prince ranting about the boring meetings he had to endure, the council members who were too full of themselves to even consider alternative ideas. At this point Naruto had grown – dangerously, so dangerously – comfortable around the prince that he often dared to crack a joke or two, just to see the other man laugh or chuckle and let go of his irritation.
Making the prince laugh made butterflies squirm in Naruto's stomach, which was ridiculous and dangerous and stupid, he knew, but he couldn't help himself. Knowing he was the one to make Prince Sasuke laugh, knowing that he was able to put that beautiful smile on his face and chase away his irritations – it made him feel warm inside, had him burying his face into his pillow at night in a vain attempt to chase away the heat out of his cheeks.
He tried to ignore it at first. The way his stomach would squirm with butterflies; the way just one look of Prince Sasuke could have him blushing for the remainder of the day. Forcing himself to remain oblivious to how much he liked making the prince laugh, how much he liked talking with him. Didn't dare to contemplate how low his mood could plummet if he went several days without speaking or even seeing the prince.
He just liked talking to the prince, that was all. He just liked being out of the quarters, where sometimes it seemed like most Omega could do nothing but think about the next guy or lady they could bed.
He just liked conversing with the prince, what was wrong with that?
Everything was wrong with that, because it lead to dangerous things, to complicated emotions which had him staring up at the ceiling in the dark at night. It led to awkward blushes and a squirming stomach and Karin and Haku looking at him knowingly whenever the prince passed them in the corridor and he would smile at them. It led to Karin gently cautioning him to be careful, to keep his heart safe even when he insisted nothing was happening between him and Prince Sasuke.
Of course nothing was going to happen. For Prince Sasuke was a prince and he was just an Omega, even if the older man had granted him permission to address him by his first name. Nothing could ever happen between the two of them, even if his brain insisted on dreaming up so many scenarios at night. He was just being stupid and he needed to get a hold on himself.
Who cared if he enjoyed the way he could make Prince Sasuke laugh? Who cared that he found the prince immensely attractive and how, in the deepest of night, buried underneath his blanket, he would sometimes dare to wonder how it would feel like if the prince were to lie beside him and take him into his arms? Who cared if he counted down the hours and the days until he could see the prince again, until he could talk with him once more? Who cared that he thought it was adorable how even at his mature age Prince Sasuke still liked to think up pranks he could pull on his older brother, even enlisting Naruto's help at times? Who cared if Naruto sometimes would take the time to admire how the sunlight would bring out the blue sheen in the prince's hair, while listening to him ranting about yet another council meeting? Who cared if when Prince Sasuke's voice would lower, deepen, as he conspiringly talked about a prank he wanted to pull on Prince Itachi, his voice would send shivers down Naruto's spine and would have him thinking very inappropriate thoughts later at night?
Who cared about all that when nothing would ever happen between them anyway?
Then Prince Sasuke entered his personal chamber one cold night in December, tearing down the last barrier which had remained between the two of them.
It was because he recognised the prince's footsteps that he did not immediately scream in fright. It had been months since anyone had tried to enter his room at night, but he still remained on guard during some nights, when the common room was too rowdy, too loud.
Now he listened to familiar footsteps slowly approaching his chambers and his heart started thudding quicker – out of anticipation? Out of worry? Out of fear? He could not say.
The door opened and the Omega sat up, feeling for the match box he knew he'd left behind on his nightstand. Sometimes he liked to read at night when a story was particularly engaging and he had taken to hoarding matches and candles just for that.
"I did not expect to see you here, my Prince," he murmured and struck the match, bringing the small flame to the candlewick, watching how the fire eagerly engulfed it, spreading its small glow.
A single candle would not light up the room as much as an actual fire in the hearth would, but it was enough to watch Sasuke close the door behind him; his black eyes gleaming faintly.
"How did you know who I was?" Sasuke questioned; a faint hint of curiosity in his voice.
In spite of the odd situation, Naruto smiled amused. "After all these months, I have come to recognise your footsteps. That does not explain why you are here, at this time of the night. I do not think you visit these quarters regularly – as I'm often being told by the others," he added exasperatedly.
If Sasuke had started visiting the quarters, no doubt that would have been the only thing the other Omega would have been able to talk about. At least once a week there was one Omega lamenting how the prince wouldn't look at him or her, so they definitely would not stay quiet if Sasuke had approached either of them. He was lucky that tonight was a calm night and everyone else was fast asleep.
"I normally do not," Sasuke admitted with easy and slowly he approached the bed; the look in his eyes quite peculiar, setting the Omega on edge somewhat. "But I found myself restless tonight."
"And so you have come here." A heavy stone seemed to drop in Naruto's stomach at once; the foul taste of bile burning the back of his throat. All these months of meeting with each other, of talking and laughing – had it all been for naught? Was the prince ultimately not different from the rest of the men seeking to satisfy their urges at the castle? "What do you seek, my Prince? Comfort?" He could not help but sneer the word, memories of Omega girls squealing about what would await him once he was healed making his stomach churn worse.
"I've told you to call me Sasuke when we're alone," Sasuke scolded him gently and came to a stop at the foot of the bed. "You are not kicking me out," he remarked neutrally.
"I might not be the brightest of the bunch, but even I can discern who I can kick out and who not without having to face any type of consequences," Naruto retorted, smiling cynically. It was only a façade, however, because inside he was trembling, wondering if he could find the strength to go through with whatever the Prince desired of him.
He had refused to bed anyone in the castle, unwilling to be looked at as simply an object they could use to please themselves. If Sasuke wanted to bed him, however … Could he refuse him? He was long past the phase of denial in which he made himself believe that he hadn't stupidly fallen in love with the prince. He had made peace with the fact that Sasuke would most likely never return his feelings, but if he wanted to bed him, could Naruto go through with that? Perhaps it would not be so bad because it was Sasuke? Even if the man would never love him in return – he could hardly be worse than any of the other men who had tried to fuck him. Maybe it would be tolerable because he loved the prince?
He didn't know. He was afraid to find out, afraid to discover what would happen if he refused the prince – and afraid to discover what would happen if he didn't refuse him.
"You will never have to face any consequences for kicking me out," Sasuke stated firmly, ripping Naruto out of his dark thoughts. He rested his hands on the bed. "The rules are for everyone, including my family. Do you want me to leave?"
No, he didn't want that. That was the part that scared him the most.
"Why are you here?" Naruto deflected instead. Perhaps it would not be so bad whatever it was that Sasuke wanted. Maybe he would even be able to find some pleasure in it if he shielded himself behind his feelings for the other man.
"I found myself longing to be in your company," Sasuke replied. "If it is all right with you, I would like to hold you in my arms tonight."
That was … not what Naruto had expected to hear. At all.
In shock, he rose up on his knees and leant forwards. "Is this some kind of euphemism they have not told me about yet?" he questioned, confused and wary.
Some of the Omega had not neglected at all to tell him in too much detail all the things men – and women – might expect from him, so he doubted they had forgotten to mention this particular euphemism if it was one indeed.
"No euphemism. I really just want to hold you in my arms, that is all. If you don't wish me to do that, I will take my leave, no harm done," Sasuke said softly.
Naruto stared at him, tried to catch even the slightest hint of insincerity, but found none. After months of conversing with the prince he had become quite adept already at reading the older man and he could find no lie, no deceit in his face. It confused him, because had he really come all the way here just to hold Naruto in his arms?
What a peculiar man.
He echoed the sentiment soon afterwards. "You are a peculiar man, Sasuke," he admitted and laid back down, drawing the covers partly back. "But I have nothing against it. If you want to hold me, feel free to do so." He could feel his cheeks burn already at the thought of having the man lying besides him, echoing the fantasies he'd been having for a while, but he didn't want to rescind the offer either. He had accepted Sasuke's proposal and he would go through with it, even if his stomach was still churning somewhat nastily and a voice in the back of his mind was warning him against this stupidity, cautioning him against the betrayal that might unfold soon.
There had been no insincerity in Sasuke's face or voice; now he would find out if there truly was no insincerity to be found. And if there was … Well, he would consider this another lesson learnt then.
"Thank you," the dark haired man murmured and before he climbed into the bed, he blew out the candle, darkening the room completely once more. The darkness only seemed to amplify the rustling noises his clothes and the bedsheets made when he slid underneath the covers, drawing the blankets over the both of them.
Once fully in bed, he laid down right behind Naruto, who had turned onto his side immediately, too nervous to remain on his back or the gods forbid, face the prince even in pure darkness.
However, the moment Sasuke slowly wrapped his arms around him, drawing him closer to his body, so that his back ended up pressed against the prince's firm chest, and their legs entwined underneath the sheets, Naruto found himself relaxing in spite of himself; the warm of Sasuke's body drawing out all the tension he had held within him.
Feeling brave, he reached up with his hand to curl his fingers around one of Sasuke's wrists, trapping it against his chest, covering it with his own hand.
When he concentrated, he thought he could feel Sasuke's heart thumping against his back.
"You normally don't allow anyone to visit you," Sasuke commented and Naruto smiled wryly. So the rumours had spread that far already, huh? "What's so different about me?"
"The same reason why you come to me and not to someone else," Naruto dared to answer; his voice barely above a whisper.
He was now certain of it, however. As unbelievable as it seemed – perhaps he and Sasuke were not impossible together.
Maybe having fallen in love with the prince was not a bad idea after all.
AN2: I hope this second part didn't disappoint! Now I'm off to bed because I have to get up early for my classes and of course I'm being an idiot again. I'll never learn.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next part! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
