Part 2
She didn't understand.
Naruto and Sasuke were together? Since when? How long had this been going on? Did his parents know he was dating Sasuke?
Stunned, she watched how Naruto kissed him back before pulling away with a smile. Whatever Sasuke told him made him laugh before he pulled on his jacket and accepted the helmet he was offered. He got on the bike behind the older man, wrapped his arms around his waist and then they were off to wherever their destination was.
"Hey, you still with me?" Ino asked sharply.
"What?" Sakura shook her head. "Yeah, I am. Is your laptop back to working again?"
"Yep, it finally decided to stop being stubborn," Ino replied dryly. "So you're coming to the party then?"
"Yeah, I'm coming. I'll change into my clothes at your place," Sakura decided, because there was no way her parents would believe she was studying with Ino if she was dressed in her party clothes.
"Sounds great to me! We can do each other's makeup," Ino giggled. She had to hang up then, her mum calling in the background for her to come downstairs.
Lowering her phone, Sakura still stood in front of the window, frowning as she stared at the spot where just a few minutes before Sasuke had waited with his motorcycle. For some reason it bothered her to have seen the two of them kissing. Not really because they were both male, but … Sasuke didn't have the best of reputations; was Naruto even aware in what kind of mess he could land by dating that guy? Not to mention he was so much older! Tattooed, older by several years, in possession of a criminal record … Aside from his handsome looks, Sasuke wasn't exactly the greatest catch; especially not when your own dad was the head of the police.
She sighed and shook her head, rolling her eyes. Whatever, if Naruto insisted on being dumb, that was his prerogative. It probably wouldn't even last long between those two, seeing as Sasuke was several years older.
She had been determined to stay out of it, because it was Naruto's decision to be stupid. It wasn't her business anyways and they weren't exactly friends either, so it wasn't like she casually could go up to him and ask him about his relationship, not like she would do with Ino. If he wanted to get his heart broken by the local bad guy, well, that was on him. It might teach him that a pretty face wasn't always worth the trouble.
So whenever she happened to spot them together on their street, she just looked away. Sometimes she would spare an idle thought about whether Naruto's parents knew what their son was up to whenever he left the house, but for the most part she ignored them.
Ignoring them became harder when she caught Sasuke smoking.
She was on her way home from school and as always she had to pass by the brothers' house to reach her own. The car of the other brother wasn't in the driveway, so he was probably gone. Still at work most likely. Sasuke, on the other hand, was definitely home, standing on the porch, though he wasn't facing the street. He was accompanied by a thin trail of smoke, which made Sakura do a double take. Her mouth dropped open in surprise when she realised he was smoking a cigarette, frowning at something in the distance.
Sasuke smoked?
Eugh, that definitely wasn't attractive in the slightest. Grimacing, she turned away and crossed the road to reach her home. Now she really didn't understand how Naruto could date him. His own mother in fact had shown up in several anti-smoking campaigns, so how could he stand to kiss someone who most likely tasted like an ashtray? Seriously, what on earth was he thinking? Yes, Sasuke was hot, but that didn't make up for his garish tattoos, his criminal record and his filthy smoking habit!
Honestly, you'd think the son of the police chief would know better than to date someone like Sasuke. Wasn't he at all worried about what people would say about him? People talked, especially in their small town, and they were definitely eager to discuss the Uchiha brothers.
"What an idiot," she muttered, retrieving her key to open the door. "Tadaima!"
Mum appeared in the doorway of the kitchen with a smile, a towel in her hands. "Okaeri, how was your day, sweetheart?"
"It started great and then the teachers ended up giving us a lot of homework," Sakura smiled wryly, dumping her bag on the floor so that she could pull off her jacket and her shoes.
"That's to be expected, I guess," Mum smiled sympathetically. "How about you get started on that then and I'll bring you some snacks?"
"That sounds great, thanks, mum," she grinned and snatched her bag up before making her way upstairs.
She peeked through her window, but from here she could only see the edge of the Uchiha's porch, not Sasuke himself. He might have gone inside by now for all she knew.
Her eyebrows slightly furrowed, she unzipped her bag and started pulling out her books, mulling over what she had seen. If Sasuke was trying to tick off every box in the list of bad boy he was definitely succeeding. Really, though, in this day and age when everyone knew just how bad smoking was for your health, why would he even do that?
Right as she put her – significantly flatter looking – bag next to her desk, movement outside caught her attention and she peered outside, watching Naruto walk to his house; a pair of black headphones on, him bopping his head to whatever music he was listening.
In a split second she made a decision and hurried back downstairs, shoving her feet in her shoes. "I'll be right back, mum, I have to ask Naruto something about one of our classes!"
She was already outside before she could hear mum's response and ran across the road, making Naruto turn to her in surprise. He lowered his headphones and tilted his head to the left.
"Hey, Sakura-chan, what's up?" he asked curiously.
"I've been meaning to ask you something," she started, linking her hands behind her back.
"Erm, okay, what?"
"You and Sasuke-kun, you're dating each other, right?"
That had his cheeks instantly growing red and he rubbed the back of his neck with an embarred grin, nearly dislodging his headphones. "Yeah, we are. You saw us or something?"
"Or something," she said vaguely, nodding. "I was just wondering … You think it's a good idea to date him?"
Above them the sun disappeared behind the clouds; more and more grey clouds were gathering, promising a bout of rain soon.
He frowned. "Why wouldn't it be a good idea?" he asked perplexed.
"Well, he's older for one, like way too old, you're basically in two different stages of your lives - "
"Only by five years; that isn't that much older, you know. It's not like he's twenty years older!"
"He's got tattoos - "
"Yeah, so what? They look amazing on him."
"He smokes and he has a criminal record," she finished bluntly, resting her hands on her hips. "As someone who's the son of a police chef, don't you think you should know better than to date someone like him? People talk about him, you know?"
"As someone who isn't really a friend of mine, don't you think you should mind your own business?" Naruto smiled thinly; his eyes narrowed. "I don't see what my relationship has to do with you."
Becoming rather annoyed with his refusal to even consider just how stupid he was being, she retorted, "Do your parents even know you're dating him?"
"Right, bye, Sakura-chan. I've got other things to do." With that rude dismissal he left her standing on the footpath and entered his own house without even looking back once.
"So damn rude," she muttered darkly and marched back to her house, minding herself just in time before she would slam the door shut.
Fine, if Naruto wanted to be an idiot, then so be it. Given his avoidance of the subject, she was pretty sure that Minato and Kushina weren't even aware of what their son was up to, which just made him even more of an idiot. You would think he would care about his dad's reputation at the very least! The chief of police's son dating a known criminal? That would trump any sort of gossip somebody could come up with.
So far she hadn't heard anyone talk about them being together, but that would probably be only a matter of time if Naruto insisted on being such an idiot. They would get caught eventually and how was he going to explain this to his parents then?
She snorted quietly and removed her shoes. Oh to be a fly on the wall when he would try to explain himself to them …
The suspicion that Kushina and Minato most likely had no idea that their son was dating someone was reinforced when Sakura could never spot either one of them meeting Sasuke when he came to pick up Naruto. Not that she was stalking them, but her window looked straight at Naruto's house; it was kind of hard to miss either Sasuke's motorcycle nearby or the man himself waiting for Naruto to show up.
It made her feel annoyed on his parents' behalf. As far as she knew they were great parents, so why couldn't he do them the courtesy of informing them that he was seeing someone? Was it because he knew they would disapprove the second they heard who he was dating? Minato at least had to know about Sasuke's criminal record; she couldn't imagine him being happy if he knew his son was dating a criminal – former one or not, that was beside the point.
Sakura had tried to talk to Naruto a couple of times afterwards, but he always brushed her off, not even listening to her concerns. She knew they weren't friends – not like she wanted that! – but she was just looking out for his and his family's reputation! What would the rest of the town think if they knew that the head of the police's son was dating a criminal? That would definitely reflect on Minato's reputation and even on Kushina's. But of course he had his head so far up his arse that he refused to think about anyone else but himself.
She knew love could make people stupid, but this stupid?
The middle of October saw her trudging through the forest, searching for a particular plant for her biology class. As a way to break up the monotony, their teacher had ordered them to collect samples of plants so that they could study them during class. A way to be outside and get some fresh air at the same time, Kakashi-sensei had exclaimed, but the entire class was certain this was just his way of not having to teach much.
Although he taught the last year of secondary school, he was extremely laidback – especially compared to their other teachers.
It started to rain after a while and she spared a moment to glare up at the sky before tugging on her hood and continuing her trek. She wasn't in the mood to come back yet again just to find one damn plant, so rain or not, she was going to search until she'd found it, so that this assignment would finally be finished!
Sakura couldn't help but hiss in anger when she looked up and realised she was going entirely the wrong way. A small lake stretched out in front of her with a small dirt road leading towards it. The road led straight to one of the two only exits of this forest, close to the borders of the town.
The lake, small as it was, was quite popular amongst teenagers, because it offered some form of privacy with its long towering trees surrounding the lake like a circle. Couples especially loved to come out here and take advantage of the low hanging branches to have some private time together – whether that was in a car or just in the open.
The lake appeared deserted at the moment, because it had become too chilly for people to hang out nearby the lake and it wasn't dark enough yet for couples to spend some time here. As pretty and peaceful as the lake was at the moment, this wasn't the right place to find the plant, that at least she knew. None of the greenery around her contained the right plant and she heaved a huge sigh, rubbing her forehead.
The rain was steadily falling now; not exactly a downpour but not just some light shower either. When she pricked her ears, she could hear the drops rhythmically tap-tap on the leaves and on the ground; the soft noise relaxing her slightly.
Right, no need to get worked up about a plant or even the fact that she'd gone the wrong way. If she would walk around the lake, she could enter the forest again without having to make a whole detour back.
Nodding to herself, she adjusted her bag so that it wouldn't keep cutting into her shoulder and started walking to the side of the lake, careful not to slip on the wet ground. Already small puddles were forming here and there, turning the earth into slippery mud. She'd rather not end up falling onto her butt and get mud all over her clothes, thank you very much.
She almost didn't notice it, focused as she was on the weed overgrown path in front of her, but the wind grew in strength, making the water ripple and tree branches sway back and forth. The tips of the branches dragged across the forest floor, stirring up dead leaves and tufts of grass; creaking quietly under the onslaught of the wind. It only took a second of glancing at the water, distracted by a bird flying low over the surface, for her to spot it.
The reflection of a car.
It was only visible for a couple of seconds before the wind once more disturbed the water, but she automatically turned around, surprised to find already someone present here. She took a couple of curious steps closer to the tree in question and spotted the front of a black car peeking out through the branches.
She spared a moment to wonder why that car looked so familiar, but someone moving in it startled her. She expected someone to come out of the car, but whatever they were doing, it definitely wasn't getting out of the vehicle.
She should just turn around and continue her search, but something kept her rooted there; her curiosity piqued when still nobody stepped out.
It was when she took a few steps closer, getting a good view of the window, that she realised why nobody was getting out. Her mind completely blanked and she reddened fiercely; gaping at the unexpected sight in front of her.
That was Sasuke's car. Sasuke's car with Sasuke sitting behind the wheel; his face and most of his body hidden by Naruto. Naruto, whose upper body was completely naked. Naruto, who was moving up and down in a way that definitely couldn't be misunderstood by anyone, not unless they were incredibly naïve and knew nothing of sex. A pale hand grabbed Naruto around his neck and not even the thick windows and the distance between her and the car could hide his incredibly loud moan when Sasuke dragged him towards him in a kiss.
Sakura had never run this fast before as she fled from the scene, before either one of them noticed she was standing there. Her bag was thumping painfully against her hip, the notebook in it digging into her; her heart pounding heavily, but she didn't stop running until she was well into the woods again, surrounded by nothing but trees and bushes.
She was heavily panting still by the time she found a path again and she stood still for a couple of seconds, taking in deep breaths, ignoring how her face felt uncomfortably hot and clammy. Leaning forwards with her hands braced against her thighs, she stared at the ground; her cheeks and neck stinging with heat.
There was no way she could keep ignoring this! Sex in public, what the hell was Naruto thinking?! What if it had been someone from the police or even Minato himself who had caught them? Or even someone from the town? How could he be this damn stupid? Clearly Sasuke was having a bad influence on him and Naruto was too stupid and too naïve to realise that.
Hadn't she known from the start that Sasuke was bad news? Anyone with that many tattoos, a criminal record, a smoking habit, and who thought that punching someone in a store was the appropriate answer to verbal bullying was always bad news! And she had tried to warn Naruto, hadn't she? She'd gone out of her way to express her concerns even though they weren't really friends and he'd just brushed her off!
Clearly he was too head over heels for Sasuke to realise he was screwing himself over. She didn't really care for him, because he could walk towards his own doom for all she cared, but she did care about his parents' reputation. Kushina's reputation would be ruined if people knew her son was messing around with a tattooed criminal and that would reflect badly on her agency as well! And if her agency suffered underneath Naruto's stupidity, how was Sakura going to become a model at Kushina's agency then? She didn't know any other agencies personally and Kushina's was considered to be the best of the best already!
She couldn't let Naruto ruin this for all of them, just because he was too dumb to look past a pretty face!
To hell with it, she'd given him enough time to come clean. She was going to take care of this herself!
"How's it going actually, you know, with trying to stop smoking?" Naruto asked curiously when Sasuke parked the car on the driveway. He shifted slightly in his seat, the slight ache in his arse and his lower back making him blush slightly. Maybe they shouldn't have done it that rough, but it had felt so amazing earlier that he didn't regret anything.
Even if he might be walking a bit uncomfortable for the next couple of hours.
"It's going better," Sasuke replied and smiled wryly. "After that one time a month ago, I haven't touched another cigarette."
"I can tell," Naruto teased and pecked his lips. "You taste a lot better."
Dark eyes rolled in response, making the blond grin before he sobered up.
"But you know you don't have to do this for me, right? I mean, it's nice, but it should be your own choice," he said, a tad worried. He didn't want Sasuke to feel like he had to change his habits.
Sure, it was nice to no longer have to taste cigarette whenever he kissed Sasuke and it was great to no longer have smoke stinking up their clothes, not to mention that Sasuke's health was benefitting from it as well, but it shouldn't be something Sasuke did just to please him.
Fingers curling around his neck and rubbing his skin there had his eyelids half lowering in response; the soft but firm pressure making him arch slightly into the touch.
"I know that. I've been thinking about quitting for a while now; you were just the final push," Sasuke said and shrugged. "It's not like I smoked that much, so quitting it is not that hard. At least not for me."
They got out of the car, Naruto remembering to grab his jacket in time before he would forget it again.
"When will your parents be coming over for a visit?" he asked next, waiting for Sasuke to lock his car before grabbing his hand. He smiled when slender fingers automatically tangled together with his.
"Hm, next week. I think they mentioned coming over on Friday so that they can stay longer without having to worry about work the next day," Sasuke replied before pausing. He snorted then. "Well, not worry that much about it, I guess. Father still works during the weekend, even though mother's been trying to convince him to finally slow down a bit."
Talking about Sasuke's parents made Naruto remember all the gossip he'd heard from people in their town and as always he couldn't help but feel amused at how much they had got wrong. It was called gossip for a reason, of course; it usually didn't have a shred of truth in it, but man if they could not be more wrong when it came to their talk about the Uchiha family!
He still didn't understand why they had all thought that Fugaku and Mikoto had died in the fire when nothing of the sorts had ever been mentioned in the newspapers back then. They had temporarily moved abroad so that Fugaku could lead the setup of a new company branch there, but how did people get 'perishing in a house fire' from 'moving abroad for work'?
They had probably let themselves be influenced by Sasuke's tattoos, because in that regard their town could still be incredibly backwards. As if tattoos meant that someone was a criminal! You didn't have to be a yakuza to get tattoos! Personally, Naruto thought Sasuke had great taste when it came to tattoos and he didn't just think that because he was dating the guy.
Because his family apparently dated back to the era when clans still had existed, they had their own clan symbol and he had that one tattooed right above his chest to keep his family always close to him, which Naruto considered to be a sweet thought. He also had the wings of an eagle tattooed across his shoulder blades, explaining that to him those wings meant freedom and a new start after he'd made some mistakes in his past.
Yes, Sasuke had been caught for speeding in the past and even for theft of books of all things, but he'd done that during a time when he and his father had been arguing a lot. He had never acted like that had been an excuse; just a mere explanation for the stupid things he had done. He'd been in a bad mindset back then and had done some stupid things. Naruto could understand that. When you were a teenager you were more liable to do stupid things after all; that didn't mean you were a bad person perse.
"I've got my next appointment on Monday at six. You want to come with me?" Sasuke suggested as they walked to Naruto's home.
The younger man grinned, excitement curling up in his belly. "Hell yes! I want to see Karin working her magic again! She's so amazing at what she does!"
"True, I wouldn't trust anyone else with my tattoos," Sasuke agreed and briefly stopped to pull Naruto into a soft kiss. "Especially with this one."
"Sap," Naruto teased him, clinging onto his hand.
The tattoo in question was a vibrant nine tailed fox that Sasuke was in the progress of getting inked around his left arm. The head with its fiery eyes rested on his shoulder while its nine tails were wrapped around the length of his arm. His source of inspiration for this one?
Naruto himself.
Because Naruto reminded him of a mischievous fox, Sasuke had explained with a smirk, even as Naruto had protested the notion and then had protested Sasuke getting a tattoo of essentially him. They hadn't even been together for a year yet, who was crazy enough to get a tattoo of their partner already then?
Sasuke apparently, who'd simply stated that he never picked tattoos that he would regret.
Right as he was about to open the front door, it slammed open and Sakura of all people rushed past them, not even sparing them a single glance as she ran to her own house.
Mum followed closely behind her, her face resembling a thundercloud as she bit out, "How about next time you mind your own damn business instead of sticking your nose where it doesn't belong!"
She noticed them staring and her face instantly brightened, smiling as she pulled both of them in a hug. "Oh hey, you two, I hadn't expected to see you here for another hour or so."
"Well, the lake was turning into one giant mud pool, so we figured we better leave before the tires would get stuck or so," Naruto explained and cocked his head slightly. "Mum, what was all that about? Why was Sakura-chan here?"
He was completely mystified by that. They weren't friends, so what possible reason could she have had to visit his house?
"Come in, come in. It looks like it's going to start raining again soon." She gave the sky a suspicious look whilst ushering them inside, where the smell of hot chocolate clung to the air.
"Oh you made some chocolate? You've got some left?" Naruto asked hopefully, hanging his jacket in the closet.
Next to him Sasuke removed his shoes and stuffed his feet in some house slippers.
"Sure, I can make more," Mum agreed easily before she sighed and brushed some of her red hair out of her face. "That girl is a complete headache, I tell you."
"Not that I'm going to deny that," because Sakura could really annoy someone terribly; case in point being her annoying insistence that Naruto should break up with Sasuke, "but that really doesn't tell me anything."
"Apparently she'd caught you at the lake," Mum started and raised an eyebrow.
Naruto prayed his cheeks weren't as red as they felt like when he realised embarrassed what she probably had seen.
"And couldn't think of anything better to do than to tell me about it."
"Why would she do that?" Sasuke frowned, straightening up from putting his shoes away.
"Because she assumed that I wouldn't know what my baby boy is doing or who he's seeing," she replied dryly, but her eyes were still stormy. "I wouldn't want your relationship to reflect badly on my reputation, now would I?" she continued in a mocking tone before rolling her eyes.
"What?" Naruto could only stare blankly at her, completely lost. What did his relationship with Sasuke have to do with mum's reputation?
"She's apparently decided that Sasuke is an incredibly bad influence on you and acted like I didn't know you two were even dating. Please, who does she take me for?" Mum huffed and put her hands on her hips. "I basically perfected the art of sneaking out of the house, no way you could get away with having a boyfriend without me or Minato knowing about it!"
"Are you serious?" Naruto groaned and rubbed his forehead. He couldn't believe she had even bothered his mum about this! Clearly she'd been a bit too influenced by the local gossip, but why couldn't she have just minded her own business? They weren't even friends!
"Given her odd insistence of my business being potentially harmed, I'm going to hazard a guess and say she's hoping to become a model at my agency," Mum said and snorted. "Why else would she be so 'worried' about my agency's reputation? I told her I'm not in the habit of hiring snitches and people who can't keep their nose where it belongs. Told her to scram because she was getting on my nerves."
"So what, because I didn't want to listen to her bullshit, she thought she could go behind my back?" Naruto shook his head in disbelief, following mum to the kitchen.
Did Sakura have any idea how badly she could have fucked things up for Naruto if his parents hadn't known he was dating Sasuke and they had been of the strict kind? Fortunately for him, his parents had always been supportive of his sexuality, but what if they hadn't been? What was wrong with her?
"Clearly," Mum said and started preparing two more mugs. "Told her to leave. I prefer a tattooed son-in-law over a snitching employee who can't keep her nose out of other people's business."
"Well, she clearly fits in with the rest of the town," Sasuke remarked dryly.
She tutted her lips. "Don't mind them. They're just a bunch of losers with nothing better on their hands. If they would use their brain for even one second, they would realise you can't be that horrible when you've been approved by the head of the police himself."
"You really impressed him when you stood up for me like that in that store back then," Naruto grinned, leaning against Sasuke's shoulder.
His parents always appreciated people who helped their son – even if that was with fists instead of words. His best friend, Gaara, especially was fond of using the former instead of the latter if people tried to bug him or Naruto.
"He deserved it," Sasuke muttered and wrapped his arm around Naruto's shoulders, tugging him closer.
"Well, I doubt she'll bother you again," Mum said, pouring the hot chocolate in the mugs. "After what I told her, she'll probably think twice before listening to stupid gossip again."
"Not that I really care," Naruto said, unbothered.
So what if other people liked to gossip? He and everyone who really mattered to him knew the truth and that was all that counted.
Let them gossip all they wanted. He had an amazing and sweet boyfriend, so who was really the winner here?
The End
AN2: Truthfully, I'm not really happy with the ending, but I didn't want to keep changing it anyways, so yes ... I hope it's not too awful at least! *winces*
