Chapter 2: The Week My Past Came Back To Bite Me In The Ass
The drip, drip, drip of the faucet held Sasuke’s attention like a vice. With both hands gripping the small bathroom vanity, he watched each tiny drop fall, striking the drain before disappearing into darkness. Vaguely, he could hear Karin’s gently knocking on his bedroom door.
“Sasuke? Are you alright?” She softly and cautiously called out to him. As his roommates had descended on him, Sasuke had become overwhelmed and bolted for the safety of his room. He looked up from the sink to meet his reflection in the mirror. The subtle black eyeliner and shadow he’d donned the previous night, now faded and smudged, adding to haggard look about his face.
“I’m fine, Karin.” He called back, perhaps more harshly than he’d intended. “I’ll talk to you later, ok?” He added in a kinder tone. Out of three of them, she was the roommate he was most fond of. She brought an older sister energy to the household. Both being blunt and direct while maintaining a sweet and nurturing attitude. She was also the only one who ever bothered to cook, or made sure the others remembered to take a break from their studies in order to care for themselves. If it wasn’t for her, Sasuke wasn’t sure how many meals he would have skipped by simply forgetting to eat. The three of them where the closest things he had to real friends, and some of the few people in his life he felt he could confide in. The only others being his brother and parents. Karin was by far the easiest person for Sasuke to talk to, but he had no doubt that Juugo and Suigetsu were standing beside her on the other side of the door.
“Ok.” She responded hesitantly, but Sasuke could hear her shooing the other two from the door. He splashed cool water onto his face and scrubbed his eyes with a hand towel to remove the smeared make up. Specks of the eyeliner remained stubborn at his waterline and he gave up trying to get them with a sigh. He walked back into his modestly furnished bedroom and collapsed dramatically into his bed. His first semester of veterinary school had been rough. So rough in fact that he’d opted to take the summer off. The last four months had barely seen him leaving the apartment for anything other than classes, so the opportunity to finally get out and let loose had been a joyous welcome. ‘Stop thinking about it,’ he told himself. ‘It’s over. it’s done with. It was an experience that you can now forget about.’ But his brain wasn’t ready to let the incident go.
Sasuke still wasn’t sure how he’d lost his friends or ended up on the other side of town, but he remembered running into Naruto quite vividly. He’d been on the packed dance floor enjoying that nights popular local band. He had enough alcohol in him to not really about who he was dancing with or if he was dancing with anyone at all. At one point he’d realized he’d been dancing back to back with someone for quite awhile. The height and broad shoulders told him his partner was male, even before they’d turned to face each other. He froze when glazed blue eyes had met his own. He knew that face, had seen it almost every day of his childhood. Even as much as it had changed over the past few years, it was unmistakable. A trance seemed to come over Sasuke and he cautiously placed one arm over Naruto’s shoulder, as the other man had slid his own hands down to Sasuke’s hips. The two had continued dancing until their eyes met again. Naruto kept one hand on his hips and brought one hand up to cup Sasuke’s cheek and kissed him passionately. A kiss Sasuke didn’t hesitate to return. He grabbed the front if Naruto’s shirt and dragged him off the the dance floor, through the side door and out into the alley beside the building. Naruto aggressively shoved him up against the wall and kissed him again. He could still feel his heart pounding in his ears as well as the music reverberating through the brick wall he was pressed against.
“Come home with me.” A heady voice had whispered against his lips. Sasuke only nodded. Every ounce of common sense or self preservation had vacated his brain the moment their eyes had met. Even the walk the cool night air had done nothing to sober him.
Sasuke groaned into his pillow. ‘Stop thinking about it,’ he told himself again. ‘Just go to sleep.’ But it was still another few hours before sleep came and gave Sasuke the peace he sought.
The next couple days passed in a haze for Sasuke. He hadn’t had this much free time in so long, he wasn’t sure what to do with it, so he’d opted for doing nothing. All the while his brain fought with him that he should be in class. He was laying on his back watching a movie on his phone while eating a bag of chips, when his bedroom door flew open to reveal a concerned Karin. Sasuke still hadn’t gotten a chance to talk to her as she’d either been at work or in class the past few days. Judging from her scrubs, he guessed she was on her way back to either one.
“Are you sure you’re ok.” She looked at him suspiciously.
“Yes,” he tried to reassure her. “I’m just in my head about school. I’ll leave the house today I promise.” He sat up brushing the chip crumbs from his chest. “And shower. And do laundry.”
Karin eyed him skeptically, “If you say so.” She placed a hand on his head and slowly patted it twice before leaving. Sasuke watched the door close but remained stationary as he tried to force himself to actually get moving. Perhaps going out to get a nice cup of coffee would be a good start, he thought. Standing up from the bed caused more crumbs to fall from his clothes. But first, a shower.
Sasuke was lost in thought as he locked the apartment door behind him, slipping the single key into his pocket, and walked down the old carpeted hallway towards the elevators. The day was mildly warm and he’d dressed for the weather in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Sasuke could say that he was feeling better getting up and moving even this far, as he put his headphones into his ears. He was so distracted that he didn’t notice the elevator doors he stood directly in front of had opened.
“Excuse me.” Said a soft male voice. Sasuke snapped back to himself. A young man with dark hair and eyes stood before him trying to make his way off the elevator.
“Sorry.” Sasuke stepped aside and around him into the elevator. Sai, he thought the mans name was. He was pretty sure they’d had a few classes together. The man nodded in understanding and continued down the hall. ‘Cute,’ Sasuke thought as he watched him walk away through the closing doors.
The coffee shop Sasuke favored was only a short walking distance from the apartment. He ordered his usual black coffee and headed to the door when someone called his name.
“Sasuke.” Said a curt female voice somewhere to his left. He knew that voice though he hadn’t heard it in years. He whirled around to find its owner. A beautiful young woman in a flowing cream colored sundress sat at a small table in the corner. Green eyes sparkled as she smiled over her cup of coffee. Her long pink hair was expertly braided and fell over her toned shoulders.
“Sakura?” He said incredulously, striding over to her table. She had been his girlfriend all through high school, but he’d lost touch with her since. “I haven’t seen you since graduation.”
“You mean since I dumped you?” She asked with a bright smile.
“I thought it was a mutual understanding that we wouldn’t work… for obvious reasons.” Sakura had been the first to know his secret, the first to keep it, and the first to accept him as he was.
“Right. But I dumped you.” She smiled and laughed as she stood to hug him tightly. “It’s good to see you. Can you stay or do you have to be somewhere?”
Sasuke pulled out the opposite chair and sat down with her.
“What are you doing here? I thought you were going to med school.” It had been her dream as long as he’d known her.
“I am, just in a different way.” She paused looking nervous. “I’m stationed here… with Naruto.”
“He told you.” Sasuke glared.
“No.” She held both hands up in defense. “He told Shikamaru, I walked in on their conversation.”
“Shikamaru is here too?” She nodded.
“So are you stalking me then or is this a coincidence.” He asked suspiciously.
“Coincidence, she chuckled back at him.” I’ve been on a mission to find any decent coffee in this god forsaken town.” She sighed sadly looking down at her mug. “Nothing compares to home.”
“So you joined the-“ Sasuke realized he hadn’t noticed what branch of the military Naruto was a part of.
“Army.” She finished for him, focused on pouring more sugar in to her cup.
“Anyone else from my past here to haunt me?” He asked warily.
“Kiba.” She said flatly.
Sasuke nodded. He couldn’t remember much about Kiba except that he loved animals as much as Sasuke did. He didn’t recall any conflict with him like what he’d had with Naruto and Shikamaru.
“So you joined the army with Kiba, Shikamaru, and Naruto?” He asked slowly.
“Hmm, it’s a longer story than that, but yes.” She confirmed thoughtfully.
Sasuke thought for a moment before asking, “So you and Naruto… are you…” he trailed off not knowing how to politely finish his question… or why he was asking it.
“No.” She answered promptly, understanding his meaning. “Well… occasionally.” She scratched the back of her head nervously. “He grew up… he’s… kind of hard to resist.” She tried to explain. “He’s not really the same person you remember from when we were kids. I don’t quite know how to explain it.”
Sasuke thought he quite disagreed, but the blush on her cheeks made him feel guilty for prying. He also felt a small pang of jealousy, but wasn’t sure if it was caused by his past love of Sakura, or his recent encounter with Naruto. “I understand.” He told her. “Don’t worry. I shouldn’t have asked anyway. How long have you been here?” He tried to change the subject. Not wanting to think more about it himself.
“Four years now almost, I think,” she said as pulled her feet up to sit cross legged in her chair, gladly accepting the new topic.
Sasuke’s eyes widened, “How have I not run into any of you before now?”
Sakura shrugged. “Well, we get deployed to Suna every few months for about six-ish months at a time, to hold the border with Sound, you know. Then we’re back here for a few months.” She spoke quite animatedly with her hands as she explained. “We leave again at the end of the month. What about you, you’re going to school here?”
If they’d all been here this long without meeting. There was a good chance of not running into Naruto again, right?
“Yeah. I finished my bachelors and started vet school last semester. I took the summer off though.” Sakura’s phone began to ring as he finished speaking.
“Oh.” She said as she picked up the device. “I gotta go. But here,” she quickly pulled out a pen and scribbled something on a napkin before handing it over to Sasuke. “Calm me some time? Maybe we can catch up more.”
“Sure.” He agreed with a smile as he hugged her goodbye. It really had been nice to see her again.
She waved behind her as she answered her phone and disappeared out the door. Getting out of the house had been a good idea, Sasuke thought. He tossed his empty cup and headed out the door himself. Maybe he should stop at the grocery store on his way home, and make sure Karin got something to eat for once. He wasn’t nearly the cook that she was, but knew the gesture would be appreciated.
As Sasuke entered the store, a car outside honked at someone in the street. He turned his head to see the commotion and walked straight into the person leaving through the sliding doors. Sasuke tried to give a flustered apology, but as he looked up at the face of the person he collided with, his eyes met blue ones yet again.
“Boo.”
