Hinata's bedroom was just a door next to Gaara's. Her chest felt heavy as if someone was sitting on it. Naruto had told her how Gaara had changed. But why did everyone act so strange when it came to talking about him and his demon? The raven haired woman didn't know what to think about their behavior. It was weird and scared her a little. Was he that brutal and cruel? Naruto wouldn't lie, would he? And still... if Naruto hadn't lied about changes Gaara had gone through, she wasn't sure if he would be as kind to her as he was to Naruto... What if she wouldn't be able to fulfil the expectations the Kazekage had? What if she tried to be the perfect daughter-in-law and Gaara would still be out of control? What exactly did that actually mean? "Out of control"? Gaara had killed people when he was younger, was he still doing that? Hinata was worried and scared that she would get killed because she did something wrong. Maybe killed by Gaara, maybe by Rasa, who knew?
Hinata wasn't really "scared" of Gaara as a person. But of the things his Jinchuuriki made him do. The last time she had seen Gaara he had killed this boy at their Chunin exams... The exams were more than 5 years ago. Now at the age of seventeen she sat on a huge white bed with dark red pillows on it and looked out of the window.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"C-Come in" she said carefully and turned around to face the door in her back.
"Hina" Kankuro entered her room and closed the door behind him. He gave her a gentle smile and bowed slightly.
Kankuro and Hinata had become friends a few months ago. Two of the sand siblings had visited Konoha due to a Mission and Hinata had been the one to show them where they would sleep during their time in Konoha.
At first Hinata had been really scared but especially Kankuro made it easy for her to get comfortable around them.
"Don't worry, Hyuga" the brown haired man had said with a gentle smile.
"We won't eat you. We're actually kinda nice" and he had laughed.
An honest, tender laugh Hinata had never expected to hear from him. And she couldn't help but smile at him.
For some weird reason spending time with Kankuro was really easy. She felt safe with him around and warm. And it surprised her to no end. Whatever this was she felt around the oldest male sibling, she was glad they were so nice. Temari had always been nice to Hinata, but still a little absent. Maybe the blond didn't know how to act around other females. She had always been around guys... And Hinata had found that refreshing. Seeing the girl that scared her once so bad, troubling with such normal things.
"You should show us some places to eat, would you? I'm starving and I guess Konoha wouldn't like it if I would take a bite from their Hyuga heiress!" Kankuro had looked down at her with glistening eyes and a wink.
Is he flirting?
Hinata had thought blushing deeply but had put that thought far away. Nobody would ever flirt with her... Temari sighed deeply and rolled her eyes at her brother's comment.
"Kankuro, stop teasing her. You make her feel uncomfortable!"
"I-I don't mind" Hinata had stuttered.
"You two are really nice. And I would love to show you some places around here. I know you had been here before a few times. But I think this place you actually don't know already" she smiled and took Kankuro's hand to drag him with her. Temari followed them, a crooked smile on her face.
Is Kankuro blushing?
The blond had asked herself, finding it really amusing to see her brother like this. Also she was surprised that the shy, introvert Hyuga had done something "bold" to an almost total stranger.
Because Hinata had done her mission quite well, Tsunade had told her to take care of the siblings and to spend time with them after their meetings with Tsunade. Hinata had gladly accepted. She liked having those two around. Especially the kind, fun guy...
On their last day Hinata had brought them to the gates of Konoha and gasped in surprise when Kankuro pulled her into a tight hug. She could feel his strong, broad chest pressing against her, his muscular arms wrapping around her tiny body gently, one hand stroking her back, the other touching her waist carefully. For just a second she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. He smelled like sand and man. It was a weird but amazing mixture that madeher smile against his chest.
"Take care, Hina. Thank you for the last few days. It was fun having you around" he had whispered in her ear with his deep, soothing voice, sending shivers down her spine.
"Me too, K-Kankuro..." Hinata murmured shyly and pulled away gently to give him a little smile.
"Ugghh.... Hinata" Temari hugged her right after. It was a short one. Not as tight, not as intimate, not as deep as Kankuro's.
"I will miss you. Come visit us soon, alright?" a warm smile on the blonds face. Hinata had nodded and had waved them goodbye until they had vanished behind the horizon.
It had left Hinata with a strange feeling inside. Something heavy, something she couldn't really name. Seeing Kankuro and Temari leave made her feel sad. But she smiled either way. She had made new friends.
Maybe I'm not as useless as my father thinks...
A few days after she had even befriended herself with Sasuke and her Father had found out about it.
"Did you make yourself comfortable?" Kankuro asked politely and took a step closer to her. Hinata couldn't help but think that since her arrival at Suna, Kankuro had been a little absent. And she wasn't sure but while he was looking at her his eyes seemed tired and cheerless. The young woman nodded slowly and a strained smile appeared on her pale face.
"Do you need anything else?"
"No! Everything is fine, Kankuro. Thank you! I'm fine!" her eyes betrayed her. Kankuro could see she was holding her real emotions back just to be polite.
"Hina, look... when you first met us, you thought Temari and I were cruel and brutal too, right?" he laughed nervously as he scratched the back of his head.
Without his make-up he looks really handsome...
Hinata thought to herself and was surprised by this sudden realization. She thought of his tight embrace a few months ago.
"Yeah..." she committed and a slight blush brushed over her cheeks.
"But now we've become friends, right?" he continued and took a seat on her bed, not leaving her eyes. Hinata nodded and smiled again.
"Do you trust me?" he now asked.
"I do" Hinata answered truthfully.
"Then please trust me when I say nobody will harm you. Gaara won't hurt you."
Hinata's eyes slowly squinted and she sighed.
"How do you know?"
Kankuro nervously shifted on the bed and caught her eyes again.
"I can't tell you, you just have to trust me for now"
Her eyebrows were knitted at his sentence.
"For now?" now she was curious.
"Look, Hina... Gaara is a really nice person who wants to be respected and loved. He doesn't know how this feels like... My Father didn't kill him when he was born because he wanted to have a powerful force he could use to threaten other villages. Gaara doesn't really know love, though it's something he tries to find..." Kankuro explained patiently.
"What about Shukaku?" she asked then.
"What about it?" he shrugged his shoulders and stood up.
"Temari also knows he is a good guy, she just isn't sure if he is capable of treading a woman good enough for the person to be happy. His wife... Well... you..." Kankuro stopped for a second and turned his face away from Hinata. She was sure she heard him sigh.
"... Should try to be patient with him... As I said, Gaara doesn't really know love or affection. But he will learn it if someone gives it to him..." he turned back to her with a barely noticeable smile.
"And I will be the one giving him attention and love?" Kankuro may have lowered her fear but not the discomposure that rushed through her body at the thought of marrying the demon of the Sand. Marrying Gaara was nothing she had ever expected a year ago. And now she was here. Worried and scared of her future, shaking and trembling at the unknown looking ahead. She wished Kankuro would take her into his arms and let every negative thought disappear. But he didn't. He stood there watching her passively. The warm feeling he used to give her was gone. It felt like he had built a wall around him and she couldn't get through. The Hyuga didn't know why he acted like that. Had she hurt him?
Kankuro just nodded.
"You will get married... And as the Kazekage told me... the wedding will be this weekend"
Hinata's eyes widened in shock.
"That's in five days! H-how will this be possible?!"
Kankuro opened the door throwing her one last glance before leaving. And she was sure she saw a hint of pain in his eyes...
"I have no idea, Hina... What I know is... The Kazekage told me so... So we better make it in time..."
Hinata walked around the huge estate of the Kazekage and tried to find a place where she could practice her skills and could think about everything that had happened the last few weeks. Training always helped her thinking. It oddly relaxed her when she felt her muscles ache from overexertion. Sometimes she thought that this way the pain she felt inside would release itself through over working her body until she would almost faint from exhaustion. Her father had sold her to the Kazekage to get her out of his way. She wouldn't be able to see her sister and friends for a long time... They wouldn't even be at her wedding. While she worked on her Byakugan and some Taijutsu she noticed that her face felt wet. Soft tears had fallen down her cheeks, making her stop in her movements. I should try to not let the sadness overcome my body and crush it... I should try to cope with it as good as I can... she thought to herself and wiped the tears away. Seventeen years of her life she had cried. Now this time would be different. She would not let her father win. Shewould show him how easy it was for her to get along with the situation he got her into. She would not give him the satisfaction of the punishment he wanted.
Standing in front of the Kazekage's office, Hinata's heart pounded really fast and she was still exhausted from her Training earlier. Rasa was not a nice man. He was impolite, bossy and cold. She knew him from several meetings with her father at the Hyuga mansion. He always treated women like slaves, would touch them at places where it wasn't acceptable (A/N: sorry I didn't know the exact word for that) and yell at them in rage if they wouldn't do as said. Hinata once caught him hitting one of her maids because she had told him to stop touching her.
Rasa was cruel and brutal and when she thought of him she would always remember his dirty, evil laugh.
Sighing she raised her hand to knock on the door.
"Enter" his cold voice rang to her.
Slowly she opened the door and lowered her head into a slight bow.
"Kazekage-sama, excuse my interrupting." Hinata said politely.
"What do you want?" Rasa snapped back at her, his dark little pupils pierced her. He waved his hand to show her she could come in. As the door closed behind her she felt trapped but she tried to stay calm.
"Your son, Kankuro, visited me the last evening and told me, you wanted the wedding to be this weekend."
"Is that a problem, Hyuga?" he raised an eyebrow. Hinata knew he was already pissed.
"N-No, not at all. I just came here to ask you where the ceremony will take place so I could start prepare everything"
Stay calm, don't stutter, you know he hates that.
Rasa laughed his disgusting laugh and stood up slowly.
"And you thought I would take any interest in my misscreated son's wedding?"
Shit... What now? She tried to concentrate. Still she couldn't ignore the way Rasa was talking about his youngest son... Maybe her father would speak of her the same way.
"I'm sorry, Kazekage-sama. I-I j-just..."
don't stutter!!
Hinata turned her head to clear her mind for a second. The way he looked at her sent shivers down her spine. Her hands were sweating. Taking a deep breath she continued.
"I just wanted everything to be in your favor"
Rasa still pierced her with his eyes.
"Well... The ceremony will take place in our conference room. We don't have something like a church here like pathetic Konoha has. Will that suit you, Hyuga?" Hinata was surprised that she got an answer from him although his voice sounded like he would rip her into shreds every second.
"Thank you, Kazekage-sama, that's a perfect choice." she just answered and bowed again.
"Is that all?" he snapped and sat at his desk again, looking at his papers.
"Yes, thank you for your time, Kazekage-sama" Hinata said and silently left the room.
When she closed the door behind her she let a breath she didn't know she was holding in. How would she ever be able to get along with an asshole like this as her father-in-law?
