She looked out of the window over the tops of heated buildings as she finished this part of her explanation to everyone. She paid the most attention to the green trees that were so tall they reached high above the villages walls. Though it made her feel safe, she felt uneasy... Trapped. She sighed before she spoke out, wondering if she would ever feel anything different. "If I had just listened to what my gut was trying to tell me I would have just ignored those two... I didn't know what I know now. At that time I didn't know that Kakuzu had even knocked me out or that they could run incredibly fast. Fast enough to get out of state in a day's time. People where I'm from just can't do things like they can and... like I'm assuming all of you can, too."
At the end of that sentence the doors opened up behind her and her head jumped back around to see an old man with long, spiky white hair walking in. "You're late, Jiraiya," Tsunade scolded, quickly catching him up on everything that the girl had said so far, nearly confusing herself with the alternate worlds part of it.
He looked her over, seeming concerned and on-edge as well. He didn't look like he believed anything that Tsunade had told him, which she understood. She wasn't sure that she would believe it, either. "Well that's a really interesting story, uh... has anyone bothered to ask you your name?"
"It's Asha, actually..." She politely smiled. Not being asked her name didn't really bother her, though. She couldn't really remember how long both Hidan and Kakuzu went without knowing her name.
"Okay, Asha. Continue with your story." He said, returning her politeness. She noticed his eyes scanning her body, for what reason she didn't really know. He made her nervous and she wondered if he could tell.
Asha nodded, beginning to speak with less confidence than she had been. "Ok. So, the next thing I remember is waking up somewhere in the middle of nowhere... The place was like a woodland forest or something but we were underneath a stone bridge hanging over a rock creek bed. It was dusk, the whole place was completely deserted and I had never been there in my whole life."
~ ~ ~
Her mind had been floating as if she were dreaming. Flashes of color behind her eyelids threatened to wake her but she just fell deeper and deeper, her subconscious knowing that she was in danger but something was stopping her from waking. It was cold and she didn't understand where she was or if she even was... It was a strange sensation, like a dream, but she was standing in a pitch black place. Unable to tell if it were a room or if it she were literally standing in blackness. She looked around, taking a step forward and gasping as she nearly fell. So, she was standing on a pedestal, or so it seemed.
There were quiet whispers far in the distance, causing her gut to wrench forward like she was going to be sick. She couldn't even understand them, and there were so many... All of their voices full of such pain... such anguish and hatred. And then she understood something that was a single man's voice screaming to her in the distance. “He's going to kill you...” repeating twice more before changing into a desperate scream. “Run... Run! RUN!”
The last word was so loud that Asha's hands unwillingly covered her ears, closing her teary eyes from the exploding pain. And then there was near silence, only a quiet ring that she was sure was simply her own ears. Then, she thought she was hearing birds and it confused her as she looked around, still seeing nothing but the pitch darkness. Then, she gasped and stiffened out when she felt a bony hand touch her shoulder, wrapping fingers that were far too long down to her collarbone, wrapping around the skin of her neck.
It's breath was cold like winter air and every hair on her body stood straight up, her eyes rolling back as it's touch began burning like frostbite. “Don't listen to them, Asha...” the thing whispered at her, it's deepened voice sending deathly chills down her spine as her muscles locked up and cramped. Tears welled up in her eyes from the terror that was burrowing into her heart. “They aren't special like you are...”
She was afraid to let her voice be heard but the words were clear in her mind, 'Please, God, let me go...'
The fingers swiftly lifted up, giving a gentle push with it's palm that was just hard enough to make her lose balance and fall... And she kept falling, unable to reach out and catch herself.
The sound of water gently flowing and other nature sounds was what was bringing Asha back to consciousness. That and the hard bumps she had been laying on for hours had made her whole body so sore that she couldn't stand it. She sat up slowly, suddenly rubbing the back of her neck where she had been struck by what felt like a steel beam. She fought the urge to cry out from pain while she was thinking of how she had gotten here. And then she remembered, her eyes suddenly darting around to look for the two men she had met back at the mall. They must have taken her hostage but how? She didn't know what she had been hit with. She couldn't remember everything that happened.
The sound of crunching gravel came from behind her and she jumped around to see the older man with the covered face walking toward her. He was still a decent distance from her but his arm broke apart at his shoulder, elbow and wrist and extended to her neck, slamming her into the bedrock below her. It didn't knock her out but her vision blurred and her ears rang for several seconds before she began to come to.
He stood straight up above her but his hand was still wrapped tightly around her neck and from reflex her hands grabbed onto the hand gripping onto her. He could kill her right now if he wanted to. If he didn't need information from her. Though, he was sure that there were people out there with more substantial intelligence than what she had, but, why throw away information when it was right in front of him?
A hoarse chuckle came from the side but Asha could barely breathe to look, even though she knew that it was the other, younger man. "The people in this world... are so fucking weak that it's pathetic..." Kakuzu pulled up on her neck, forcing her onto her feet and, at some point, she ended up on the tips of her toes, barely able to breathe and scared for her life. "I found shelter like you asked..." Hidan said, lazily like he was regretting even agreeing to do what he had been asked. "Some cabin thing out in the woods. No one around for ten miles..."
She looked the man in the eyes, seeing deep green and no emotion except for a desire to kill. He spoke, dark and angry, hoping that she would give him a reason to pop her head off. "Are you going to answer some questions? Or, do I need to kill you now to save the trouble?" His grip became tighter and tighter around her neck, choking her more with every passing second.
Asha nodded, quickly, strangled on her own spit. When he released her, she fell to her knees, doubling over coughing as she tried to gain her breath. She looked up at him, her eyes watering, full of intense fear, begging for him to not hurt her. "Stand and walk." He ordered, stern and unmoving. She staggered to her feet, realizing that they were both at least four inches taller than her, with Hidan being two inches shorter than Kakuzu. "If you run..." he started but Asha knew she wasn't going to try. She was too scared. "You'll die..."
~ ~ ~
Sunset was coming over the village of Konoha as Asha paused after the smaller section of her story. The dream had come to her mind but she was afraid of it. Afraid of talking about it and had decided last minute to say nothing concerning it. But, everyone in the room was quiet and listening closely. "And... I just want to give a quick rundown of what happened in that cabin. Kakuzu asked me very specific questions that I couldn't possibly have understood why he wanted to know them at the time. Mostly like where they were, what the year was, made me explain a lot of the things they were seeing. Ya know... Buildings, technology, stuff like that. Things people from my world don't give a second thought about. I didn't know they were from another world so I thought they were super high on drugs."
"So..." Tsunade said, trailing a little as she sighed, heavily. She just couldn't wait to go home and take a cold shower. "That's it?"
Asha looked at her, her face solemn and full of unpleasantness as her mind vividly remembered it. "No... Much more happened... Kakuzu questioned me for hours. I seriously can't remember how many questions he asked or what all of them were. There were so many. And Hidan..." Asha stopped, looking at Shikamaru who was the only one who seemed to not want to look at her when she spoke his name. She tried to communicate pain with her eyes but he didn't budge. He had nothing for her at all. "Hidan was... a statue... who watched but never took his eyes off of me. It seemed like he wanted to cut me open... alive... and eat my heart. I remember that... very clearly."
Shikamaru couldn't help but remember Hidan's face as he killed Asuma. The look of sadistic pleasure as he took his life. Like it was the only thing that existed to him. If he had left this girl alive, what did he do to her? More importantly... What did she do to stay alive? There were many things that weren't adding up in his head, so he needed more information.
"And... after Kakuzu was done probably six... eight hours had passed. And they locked me in a small, upstairs room. And left me alone for about two days... no food or water... I didn't know what they were doing or if they had just decided to leave me to die."
Shikamaru kind of just let some of his thoughts slip out of his mouth and they sounded far from kind or understanding. "And that probably would have been kinder?" He said, leaving it as a question. He didn't want to trust her.
Asha picked up on Shikamaru's distrust quickly, trying to brush it off but, in a way, his feelings were hurtful. "Yes. After those two days, Hidan came back... alone... and gave me water..." Asha looked down for a second shivering as she breathed deeply and forced herself to get a hold on herself when she looked Tsunade in the eye who was glaring back at her in extreme impatience. She also noticed the scorn on Shikamaru's face, though she couldn't tell if it was toward her or not.
"You know..." Asha motioned directly at Shikamaru, earning some expression that hinted at a hidden and deep anger. It was all to clear that he had no intention of sharing his experience with her. She might not have recognized if she had not become so familiar with the emotion. The expression he was showing was even reminiscent of Hidan's own face and began making her feel adversarial. "I can see it on your face that you've met him. That you've seen what he does..."
He didn't want to speak back to her even if he understood her very well. It had just been a couple weeks since Asuma's funeral and many thoughts were rushing through his head. And it wasn't just the fact that Asuma had died. That's just the life he chose as a shinobi. It was how Hidan lavished in feeling Asuma's painful death. No one should have to die that way... And they wouldn't if he could prevent it. Jashin was the god of slaughter and demanded a sufferous death... If she survived Hidan when he's not allowed to let that happen... what did she do to survive? Shikamaru just knew that her presence here could not be a good thing.
Her breathing had became shallow and her eyes challenged Shikamaru's feelings toward her. "His religion... It's awful... I'm sure some of you know... He wanted to kill me. In fact, he said that his god demanded it but, for some reason, Kakuzu felt like they needed me to stay alive for the moment. Hidan ranted about it for a while. And, after raving about his religion and pushing me around a little... well..." Asha blushed, looking away from them as tears came to her eyes. She was embarrassed to say, but she said it quickly and to the point. She didn't want to have to repeat herself. "Basically, he beat me... and... he...” she paused, looking directly into the Hokage's exhausted eyes. Asha didn't want to say it, terrified that they wouldn't believe her. “Hidan... raped me... very... very brutally."
Everyone in the room became tense and looked away from her, "Look... I just want everyone here to understand that I've never been happier to be away from that flaming jackass. And I'd like to stay that way. Please... don't treat me like a criminal. I can't go back." Her eyes went back to Shikamaru, who was still avoiding eye contact but now his demeanor was different. Not quite as angry but more put off and only slightly empathetic.
Tsunade nodded, suddenly asking everyone to leave the room except for Kakashi and Jiraiya, whom she specifically asked to stay. Shikamaru kept eye contact with the girl for as long as he could manage it, the look of distrust barely faltering. "I understand where you're coming from," she addressed Asha in a quieter, more hushed tone than before, "We just had to be careful about letting you in our village."
"I know... this seems to be a dangerous world," Asha replied, keeping eye contact with her.
"I just have some questions. And I think you've said enough in front of more people than there should have been. You should have told us from the start that this was extremely personal..." Tsunade said, beginning to ask them in a softer tone than before but she still couldn't remove every bit of frustration from her tone. The day had been far too long. "How long have you actually been here and how did you get separated from Hidan?"
"Well... I've been here since day before yesterday... I... I ran... and got lost in these woods... it's where we... I don't know how to describe how we got here... It's really complicated..."
"Ok, ok... But, we do expect more of an explanation but it's night and we all need some rest. Kakashi will show you to a place to stay until we can find something more permanent for you. And tomorrow... we'll continue this first thing in the morning."
She stood up and nodded, saying her thanks before allowing Kakashi to lead her out of the room and down the long stairway until they were at the bottom of the building, Kakashi showing her what some of the buildings were, businesses and restaurants for some part of their walk. She was really interested, loving the lights and the smells of the food, even forgetting how unpleasant things had been until, about 10 minutes later, they reached a small third-story apartment. They weren't fancy or run down. Just something fairly nice but still temporary.
He turned and opened the door for her, giving a quick sigh before speaking. "So. This is it... But, remember... there are ninja filling this village and will be posted to follow you anywhere you go to find out more about you. But, also... that makes it harder for the Akatsuki to retrieve you if they decide to do that."
Asha nodded, looking straight at Kakashi's mostly covered face. "I understand that you can't just trust me straight off. What happened... with Hidan and everything. I don't want to relive that... And... if you make me leave... He'll find me... And he'll do it again... Maybe it'll be worse..." She snorted under her breath, looking off to the side, “No... It will be worse...”
His voice was sympathetic and soft. “We'll do everything we can to stop that... And as soon as we know that you're not a threat or working with them I'm sure that most people will come to accept you and see you as their friend...”
Kakashi was gone within a few seconds, leaving Asha in front of her apartment and she sighed and walked inside. It was so strange, still, to see the way they moved with their chakra propelling them away like magic. The first thing she did once she was inside was go to the bathroom sink and stare into the mirror. She held her eye lid open, touching her eye very gently, pulling out teal colored contacts, revealing her silver-colored eyes. She seemed very sad as she stared into the mirror at herself.
