011. Honor
“—I told you, the deal is off,” Sakura growled, her eyes burning.
He scoffed. “Really? And what changed your mind? Or better yet—who?” He smirked, an ugly rage bubbling inside him. “The Hyuga girl, perhaps?”
She clenched her hands. “Keep her out of this.”
Figures she would grow a conscience before my plans went into action, he thought as he sighed, looking resigned. Suppose it can't be helped.
From the hand folded behind him, sparks lit up from his finger tips.
012. Bite
The minute the Celestial Dragon wrapped his hands around her throat, Hinata decided to act. With the last breath she could take, she opened her mouth and closed her teeth onto his wrist, tasting blood and regretting nothing as he wailed in pain.
013. Commit
“...They're saying this girl managed to jam her hand into his chest and tear his heart out,” Nami read from the newspaper, her brown eyes clouding and her skin blanching. “Then she crushed it, right in front of the crowd...”
“Holy shit,” Usopp whispered with wide eyes.
Chopper blinked, trying to figure out how the girl did that, and so cleanly. She would have had to break through the rib cage to do it...and I don't even know if that could be done, even with Haki...
“That's awesome!” Luffy beamed, a rather sadistic glint in his gaze. “Think we'll ever meet her?”
Nami shuddered a little, and looked back again at the image of a teenage girl on the wanted poster—a girl with her face splashed with blood and hard white eyes glaring into the camera. Eyes that, so the rumors say, have the ability to look through you and allow her to kill you with just a pinky.
Someone to have that sort of strength—that blood lust? Someone like that could be dangerous, and is likely very uninterested in becoming part of anyone's crew. If they continued being lucky in the New World, Nami hoped that this “Dragon Slayer” Hinata would stay far, far away from them.
014. Wanted
Hinata stared wide-eyed at her first ever Wanted poster, but didn't focus so much on the bounty on her head.
When she saw that what she was focusing on didn't change, she slammed the poster down on her little boat and glared down at it like it offended her.
“Are you kidding me?! That's the name they decided to give me?”
015. Fake
During the few times Naruto would focus his attentions on her, Hinata found him to be a very gentle and fulfilling lover. It was moments like that when she could lose herself in the fantasy that he loved her, needed her, more than anyone else his affections spread to.
Then, when she found him absent by her side the next day, she would remember the facade that she was living.
016. Trial
“I take no pleasure from this. But considering the circumstances and the evidence that has been put forth, there doesn't seem to be another choice.”
In the ominous silence of the courtroom, she pulled at the shackles binding her wrists, but they didn't budge. They hadn't budged in the first few hundred times she tried to free herself, but she figured it wouldn't hurt to try again.
No.
White eyes frantically go to the village Elders—who are cold, and free of expression and pity—then to her father, who had frowned and turned his face away, his own pearl eyes closed. The little girl next to him was also frowning, but refused to move her gaze from Hinata, even as her pale eyes gleam.
Then she looked back at Tsunade, whose amber eyes hold pity, but anything but mercy.
Please, no.
“Hinata Hyuga for the murder of Sakura Haruno,” Tsunade announced, her voice carrying like thunder. “I sentence you...”
017. First Impressions
“...eh? T-tanuki?”
“REINDEER, I'M A REINDEER GOD DAMN IT,” the creature yelled as he shifted into a huge, human-like tan—sorry, reindeer.
“S-sorry, Reindeer-san,” Hinata giggled into her hand. Then she stood up straight, hoping her boss hadn't caught her slip with this strange customer. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
The reindeer shifted back into his cute, small state and smiled up at her. (Well, he bounced back fast.)
“Sure! Um, do you have any, uh,” he looked behind her counter, quickly surveyed the shelves of books in the store, “books on new medicines and diseases?”
Hinata smiled and nodded. “Sure. They're in Aisle 9. Are you buying for a friend?”
“Oh, no. I'm a doctor for my crew, and I want to keep my skills up to date.”
“I see, that makes—wait.” She paused and finally stared at him, recognizing him from his poster. “Y-y-you're a doctor?”
Chopper grinned, his cheeks flushed as he prepared to be praised. (N-not that I like being praised or complimented! Idiot humans.) “Yep!”
Her jaw dropped. “E-E-EH?!”
“WHY IS THAT THE PART THAT SURPRISES YOU?”
018. Music
Hinata already found it strange that this part of the island—the spot where shops should be open, where restaurants should be packed with customers, and where people should be enjoying their day—was empty. She saw some of the stuff that had been thrown on the floor, seemingly: luggage, glass, and even some stray beri. Seemed like everyone who'd been here had broken off into a run—but from what?
Hinata closed her eyes, tried to concentrate on the sounds happening around her—and that was when she heard it: Music. Light, soulful, aching, familiar music, the sort that can be played by deft fingers along ivory keys. Or perhaps bones.
Smiling to herself, Hinata walked towards the direction the music came from.
019. Awareness
Unlike the meetings Hinata had with the Straw Hat crew, Hinata (literally) ran into Luffy like so:
“—Ah!”
“Oof—!”
In any other story, as they stumbled away with barely a murmur to each other, they would glimpse at each other and things could have changed.
She would look at him and recognize him from his Wanted poster. He would look at her, and vaguely remember Zoro mentioning a run-in he had with a ninja girl when he got lost (“—explored!”) one time, a girl who once helped Chopper when he was shopping for a book and gave him advice on salves, a girl that Sanji had run into also while briefly working in a restaurant to get some beri for the crew—a girl with eyes that gleamed like silver, like stars.
But this was not the time, or the place. A horde of Marines have just docked to the island they were on, being led by a young man that Hinata hoped never to see again, a young man who had quickly become an enemy to the Straw Hats—a young man with black spiked hair and even darker eyes.
And so, without even looking back at each other, Hinata ran one way towards escape and Luffy ran the other to regroup with his crew.
020. Turn Away
“Naruto, please believe me,” she said as two Anbu members dragged her away from the courtroom, tears beading from her eyes. “I didn't do this. I wouldn't do anything to hurt Sakura-san! I don't know what's happening, but I swear, I'm innocent! Naruto!”
Naruto opened his mouth, but then closed it. What was there to say? He wanted to believe Hinata, wanted to give in to the doubt that clouded his mind; but the memory of Sakura's gored corpse—and Hinata standing near it, stained with Sakura's blood and eyes blank—was still too fresh. He didn't know what else to believe.
And so, after sharing a look with Sasuke (who had placed a hand o his shoulder in support), he turned away and said the only thing he could, the last words he'd ever share with Hinata: “Don't even look at me.”
