Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, the settings or characters. I only claim to own my OC. Everything else belong to Kishimoto Masashi and SJ. I make no profit off this work. |
This probably will be canon to the other fic. At least this chapter. Dunno about the rest of this fic. Honestly, still working on the OC design and backstory ,but I have most of it. Next chapter is where the bad thing start, though some sites won't be getting that obviously.
… … ...
The bandit screamed, blood pouring out of the stump that was once an arm. His face quickly turned from smug to terrified as he dropped to the ground, the dirt beneath him slick and wet with his own blood. He attempted to block the next swing with the sword in his remaining hand, but it was futile. The clang of sword against sword rang out as his blade was swatted aside, the man's eyes widening in fear as he knew what was going to happen next. He barely had to time to let out a yell of anguish before his head was cleaved from its shoulders, the lump bouncing on the ground and rolling a few feet. The small samurai wipes the blood off of their blade, looking around to see the rest of the bandits similarly dispatched. A small smirk appears on their half covered face, the samurai helm hiding most of their face from view, aside from their one eye. That eye is intently scanning the green, though bloodied forest they now found themselves in, searching for any signs of movement. A couple rustles in the trees made them grip their sword a bit tighter, but they relaxed as two familiar figures came into view. Well, maybe one was more appropriate in this case; the other two members were people they had not met before.
“The area seems secure enough. Have you found any others?” The samurai asks, causing one of the people in front of her to nod. His short brown hair shook as he did, even though it was covered with traditional blue ninja bandanna of the Leaf Village. His uniform was slightly scuffed with dirt, much like the samurai's white armor, but that was not so for the man standing next to them. Even though he looked calm, his masked face neutral as always, the samurai could feel a tension from the silver haired ninja.
“We took care of them all, but we should be careful. From what Anko gathered, these guys seem to part of a larger group. They're most likely after our charge. Unfortunately, he killed himself before we could get anything else out of him. Until we get to nearby town or village, we should keep watch at night, though we still have a couple more hours before he have to stop to rest.” Kakashi commented, looking behind him where the caravans were located.
There were at least four of the canopied vehicles, worried and concerned faces poking out of them now that the commotion has died down. The trio walked back to the wagons, the samurai sheathing their blade as they saw another new face. This one was a woman, her purple hair contrasting with her fishnet shirt and long trenchcoat. The samurai only shrugged at the exposed skin and cleavage, paying more attention to one of the passengers who had started to get out of the wagon on their right. His face was pale, beads of sweat dripping down his face as he approached the ninja.
“A-are they gone? Gods, that was awful! I-is everyone alright? T-they won't attack again will they?” The short, greying hair man sputtered, his eyes darting wildly as though he thought there was a bandit lurking in every corner. The samurai nodded to the man, speaking as clearly and as calmly as they could through their blood covered and plated masked helmet.
“Yes, Nakajima-san. We should have no trouble with them for now. However, it might be best if we post a night watch until we reach civilization, just to be safe. They seem to be part of a larger group, and may attack again, or so Kakashi-sama and his companions seem to have gathered.” This caused the man to nod, his face going to worried to relieved in a matter of seconds.
“I-i see...Hahaha, I made a good choice in hiring these ninja! As long as everyone gets to the Land of Rivers, safely and I can deliver my goods...” The man mumbles, walking away from the four and going around to the rest of caravans, speaking words of encouragement and telling the drivers to continue the trek.
… … …
“It's my turn to take watch now. You should go to sleep.”
The samurai turns around at the calm voice, Kakashi standing a few feet away from the semi-armored warrior. They shake their head, their silver helm glinting slightly from the dim glow of the campfire. The ninja raises his one visible brow, lowering himself to the short samurai's level.
“There's no need. I can continue to keep watch. It's not like I can sleep anyway.” They mutter, giving a small shrug in response. Kakashi sighs and shakes his head, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You've been up for hours; you should try to sleep at least a bit. We can't have that, now can we? Besides, everyone else has already had their shift, and it's only fair.” The masked ninja responds, causing the samurai to grumble and huff.
“I can't...Trust me, I feel tired enough but my body won't let me sleep. Figured I might as well stay up and keep watch for a bit longer. I feel bad for dragging you guys down enough as it is already. I might as well—” The samurai mutters, Kakashi's sharp glare cutting them off.
“What are you talking about? You've been far from a burden to us, Mori-san. Look, just because you...erm...are disabled doesn't mean you've been slowing us down. I'd say you've been a great help in fact. After all, you did recommend us to the employer. Your combat skills at nothing to scoff at, either. You took down quite a few of those bandits on your own, with only your blade and agility, despite being in that heavy armor. I'd say that you've been far from a burden on this mission so far,” he reassures the samurai, who scoffs and looks away with an embarrassed huff.
“I still don't feel like I did anything noteworthy. Fine...I guess I'll try to sleep. Thanks, Kakashi-sama.” The samurai says, still not looking at the silver haired man. He grows more curious at the use of the honorific, which she has used before several times now.
“Why the '-sama'? I highly doubt I've done anything worthy of such respect,” he embarrassingly mutters, trying to avoid making eye contact with Mori. She just sighs, saying nothing a for a few seconds. Finally, after an awkward silence, she speaks up.
“I don't know. It just feels...appropriate, I guess? I mean, you've helped me out a of quite a few horrible situations in the past, you know? Well, I just respect you that much, I suppose...I'm not sure what to call it.”
Kakashi can only nod, thinking back to the few other missions they've been on and other similar adventures.
“Ok...I do remember you helping me out just as much, if not more on some of the mission we've been on. Do you remember when we faced Itachi and Kisame? If you can even call that a fight.” Kakashi reminisces his sitting posture now more relaxed, causing Mori to turn his way. She shook her head, the embarrassment on her face hidden by her helmet.
“I screwed up there, though. I mean, I was glad I was able to help you, but it was way out of my league. Tsukuyomi was painful...I'd rather not go through something like that ever again.” she shudders, holding her head in her hands for a few moments. Kakashi inwardly winced. Right. She took the attack for me. I can only imagine the pain and suffering sh had to go through because of me. Still, I am grateful for back then. This conversation is getting more awkward than I'd thought it would be....He thinks, keeping quiet as the samurai regains her earlier composure.
“Well, it wasn't all bad, at least. Being part of that movie star's bodyguard was interesting. I don't mind traveling to new places, though Snow Country was a little too cool for me.” she jokes, a small chuckle erupting out of her throat. Kakashi laughed as well, remembering their battle against the snow ninja and the evil daimyo of the country. At least she has some good memories of that incident...Kakashi thinks, remembering his own previous involvement with the land of snow when he was in Anbu. She continues smiling, her jovial tone quite a contrast to her usually monotone voice.
“Speaking of fun times, you remember that one odd mission; We had to help out on a farm. All the while, you were being targeted by those bumbling ninja? Ah, that was one of the better ones. Although...” She stops speaking, her face turning bright red as she starts to remember something.
“Hm? What's with that look?”
“It's nothing...though, weren't those three kids stalking you for some reason? The ones you supervise...?” She replies, causing Kakashi to remember that incident. ...Weren't they trying to see my face that one time? Oh, those were the days. He thinks, causing the samurai to now give him an odd look.
“Yes, those three were up to something back then, like trying to unmask my face. Toying with them was quite entertaining. That's not the only time they tried to do so, either. I've always wondered why they made such a big deal out of it...” Kakashi mutters, causing the samurai to chuckle a bit.
“Well, as far as those three go, I'm not so sure. I mean, they tried to figure out my own secrets, as well. Most people are curious about things, I suppose. It's not too surprising.”
“I guess you're right. People do have an odd tendency to to try and figure out mysterious things or things that interest them. It's just human nature. Fooling with those three was amusing though.” Kakashi remarks, causing the samurai to nod in agreement.
“So...did they ever figure out what your face looked like? Knowing those three clowns, I doubt it.” She asks, causing Kakashi to stare at her. Why was she interested in this all of a sudden? Well, he was the one that brought it up...
“Hahaha, no.” he chuckles, thinking back on those particular moments. Not many people have seen his face; except for maybe Gai, and that was back when they were children. He probably doesn't remember what Kakashi looks like under the mask. Aside from the ninja registration photo, he can't think of any other pictures where he had his face exposed.
“I see...” She mutters, her helmet covering her face in shadow. Raising a hand to her head, she easily slides the silver helmet off of her head and carefully puts it on the ground. Almost immediately, he notices the wrap of bandages covering almost all of the right side of her face. Along with the unruly hair, the left side spiked much shorter than the right which covered the bandages where her eye would be. Even though the bandages were over her mouth, he could easily tell when she was speaking due to the cast of shadows on her face.
“I can easily understand that. People are sometimes very nosy. Do you remember when we first met, during the mission in Wave country?” She asks, causing him to nod. That was about half a year ago, and a lot of things had happened since then. He did remember the important events clearly, such as when they fought Zabuza twice, when she had helped him out more than once.
“Yeah...I still have a few questions about that time, now that I think about it...” He comments, causing Mori to cross her legs, shifting her position to face him.
“About what? I'll try to answer if I can; though some events of that time were a bit foggy. So sorry if I don't remember everything exactly as it happened.”
“That's fine. Don't feel like you have to answer either; I'm just curious...” Kakashi says, staring at her, his once eye focusing its attention on her covered face. He wanted to be sure she wasn't hiding anything from him, not that he would blame her if she did.
“Alright, shoot then. What do you want to know?” She asks, also focusing on his intense gaze. She wanted to judge his reaction, to see if she could read his guarded face.
“Ok....Ummm....Back on the bridge, why did you take that unnecessary hit? I was prepared to dodge it, then you jumped out in front of his blade. Why?”
“Oh...Right.” She starts, her face confused as it tilts to the side. “Well, as embarrassing as it is to admit, I wasn't sure that you would have been able to dodge that blow. It sounds awful...but I was acting on instinct mostly. I had hoped my armor would have mitigated the damage somewhat, but his blade was too heavy for it to handle. I screwed up there, though I do not regret it. I felt it was the correct choice at the time and still do.”
“Ok. So what you said at the bridge back then, about trying to save the person who would have been beneficial to the completion of the mission...that was the basis for it.”
“Yes...It's what I was taught, at least. We should sacrifice ourselves if it means the completion of the mission. Not that I wholly agree with the philosophy, but sometimes I do find it rings true with my own moral compass,” She comments, causing Kakashi to nod. That explains that, at least.
“Alright. So it was your ideology then. ...If you don't want to answer this one, it's fine, but...about your impairments...That kind of technology seems to be rare, or at least not very common. How did you come across those...um...” He stops short, slightly embarrassed at asking the question ,yet curious. She blinks a couple times, judging his reaction, watching his one eye avoid staring her in the face. She smiles, a tight grin on her face, as she raises her right arm, holding it with her left in front of his face. Bringing her face closer to the arm, she easily bites down on it and pulls at the bandages covering the appendage. With a sharp pull of her left arm, a loud pop noise sounded, the shing of metal on metal ringing out as the arm detached itself from the metal socket. A long blade shone in the darkness, the dim light from the campfire painting the metal orange. He stared at the blade for a few seconds, looking at where the human arm connected to the metal, an odd socket almost like the sheath of a blade, yet much more complex connecting the two. He then focused on the right arm itself, the synthetic looking substance clearly not an organic arm.
“Yes, these. People really find them interesting, don't they? Go ahead, you can touch it,” She comments, holding out the disconnected arm with her other hand. He only looks at the prosthetic, not sure what to do. He was slightly uncomfortable looking at the odd appendage, though she did say it was alright for him to touch it. He was probably unnerved because of the material it was made out of, which was slightly warm to the touch as he gingerly held the arm. It had various connecting joints, mostly on the fingers and wrist, though they were small and very difficult to see in the dim light. He guessed it would be hard to tell if one wasn't actually focusing on it that it wasn't a prosthetic, nevermind that she kept it covered in bandages.
“The look on your face...or should I say, in your eye? You want to know how it happened, didn't you?” She guesses, causing him to loosen his grip on the arm. Of course it would be obvious; he had already asked about the arm, though he felt bad for prying. If she didn't want to tell him he wouldn't mind. It was probably a sensitive subject.
“You don't have to. I mean...It would be rude of me to ask,” He starts, handing back the prosthetic to Mori, who takes it easily and reattaches it in one fell swoop, the clink loud in the darkness of the night. She stared at him, making Kakashi feel nervous and unsettled.
“It's fine. I kind of wanted...to tell you, anyway. Don't ask me why; I just had that idea in mind when you came up to talk to me. I just...couldn't find the right....time. It seemed awkward, though thankfully you brought this up,” She says, causing the silver haired ninja to focus on her bandaged face again.
“Honestly, I don't think I can forget that moment in my life if I tried. It was a miracle, really. Or some sort of curse; depends on how you view it. I...don't really know how... to feel about it...” She breaks off, her head looking at her crossed legs and then finally at him once again.
“If you don't want to tell me, I understand. I'm just being nosy and annoying, probably,”
“No. I was just remembering...I'll give you the short version. I was a child, just the kid of some merchants in a small village. Bandits attacked our village one day, you know how it goes. It was probably because they were looking for provisions or something. I bet they were war deserters. Doesn't matter; I snuck out, being small and quick I avoided the bandits who were busy plundering. I went to look for some of my lost friends who hadn't excaped, found them in a burning warehouse. Had trouble getting them out, since the beams were falling and and on fire. Found myself pinned under some beams, I don't remember how...Honestly, that whole part was murky. I don't understand how I survived losing half my limbs either, but I did. Maybe the fire stopped the bleeding or something dumb like that. I don't know or care, really. I'm alive and I can help people, so it's not all bad.” She stops talking, watching his reaction. Some shock, but mostly nothing, that one blank eye betraying no hint of how he actually felt at the tale.
“I see...Thanks for telling me that...” He mutters, turning his head away from her, slightly overwhelmed by the story. It was terrible what had happened, and it slightly reminded him of Obito, who if he had survived that encounter with the Rock Ninja, might have turned out a similar way.
“It was a long time ago...The details are somewhat fuzzy, I admit....I liked sharing that with you, though...Erm....Thanks...” She mutters, causing him to stare straight at her. His eyes widen as he watches her face close in on him, her eyes closed as her reddening face reaches his. He makes a muffled noise as her lips cover his, unsure of how to respond, feeling his own face redden with embarrassment. He wasn't sure if he wanted to move away, confusing feelings welling up in his mind. He had never really had an intimate relationship with a woman before, though he knew a few that had tried. He had turned them down, not really interested in them, and also worried because of his past failures. The deaths of his comrades, Obito, Rin and his teachers, among countless others, weighed heavily on his mind. He didn't want to experience that again, those hard feelings of pain and loss. He looked into her eyes, which were open and seemingly more startled than his own. Mori almost immediately pulled away, her face reddening as she tried to back up. Her eyes were looking everywhere but at him, her eye frantically scanning for another focal point. It finally settled on the ground.
“Uhhhh....T-that wasn't suppo---I mean, that wasn't supposed to escalate like that!” She sputtered out, her words tumbling after one another in a panicked rush. If he wasn't so shocked and embarrassed himself, he would have thought it was kind of adorable. He was busy trying to sort through his own feelings at the moment. She tried to continue, still avoiding looking him in the eye.
“Seriously, I only meant to...It was not my intention to kiss you like that. I'm serious! Uhhh...I'm sorry.” She apologized profusely, her head bowing down to almost touch the dirt. Kakashi was slightly amused at her display, wanted to see more of that flustered look, os different from her usual cool and calm composure.
“So...you did mean to kiss me, then?” He joked, a ghost of smile appearing on his masked face. Her head slowly raised off the ground, a sigh escaping her lips as she looked at him, her eye still not focusing fully on him.
“..Uhhhh...Kind of?? I admit it was more of an impulse. I don't know what I was thinking...” She muttered, one hand running itself through her spiked hair.
“Well...I didn't mind it...it was just surprising, that's all” Kakashi responded, his own face blushing as he stared at her. He could feel the heat on his cheeks, an odd tingling sensation running through his body.
“Oh? I didn't mean...for that to turn out how it did. It was supposed to be a quick, peck, like a thank you, or something. Ermm...I'm going to bed now. I need to think on this.” She says, quickly getting up and walking away toward the campfire. He wanted to move to stop her, but thought better about it, busy trying to sort his own thoughts on the situation. He did notice that she set up her own bags far away from the fire, on the outside of the ring of light.
