More Complications to a Complex Problem

It was perchance that Naruto stumbled upon Sasuke while making another aimless round about Konoha. Being taken rather off guard by this encounter, Naruto fell into an internal panic.

(Oh damn! I was going to ask to hang out with him later. I'm still a bit nervous. What do I do?! Should I keep walking or do I up and ask him? Crap! He's already here.)

"Are you okay Naruto? You seem a bit... flustered." Sasuke asked, a little confused by the look on Naruto's face.

"Uh... It's nothing Sasuke. I'm just thinking, about... stuff." Naruto replied, being wholly unconvincing.

"Naruto, you do know I can tell when you're lying? I don't even need the Sharingan to see all the visual cues."

(Fuck! Got to think fast!)

"Fine. I was thinking about who to settle down with..." Naruto looked away, hoping that his mostly truthful statement would be convincing enough.

"I see..." Sasuke commented, though Naruto got the distinct impression that he wasn't overly convinced. With nothing further to talk about, Sasuke continued along the path. Naruto turned and continued to look at him.

(Mind as well try to hang out with him...)

"Hey dumbass! We have a lot of catching up to do! We should hang out sometime!" Naruto shouted at him. Sasuke held up a hand in response.

"Well what's that supposed to mean?!"

Sasuke turned back towards Naruto slowly, giving the impression he wasn't overly thrilled.

"You dumbass! I guess I'll hang out with you sometime." He yelled back at him.

"When?" Naruto shouted in response.

"Later!" Sasuke gave this one last shout and took off before Naruto could yell something back.

(That went as good as it could... I guess. But I kind of wanted a definite time.)

Naruto mused to himself as he began to meander back towards his home. As he did he couldn't help but notice that he had drifted very close to the Hyuuga compound. Had he not noticed this fact, he would have been quite happy to continue his slow walk in the general direction of his house. He didn't want to see Hinata nor did he really feel like passing up on this opportunity.

It was because of this he merely froze just outside the gates, waiting. He wasn't sure how much time had passed but he couldn't move. He'd turned to the compound, staring at the inert, unfeeling walls. He told himself five more minutes to let whatever forces may be make a decision. The five minutes passed and he went to leave, only to spot Hinata staring at him.

"Oh hi Hinata! Didn't see you there."

"Hi Naruto..." She blushed a little and only looked away for a moment. "Would you like to spend time together?" The words didn't sound right coming from her mouth. They sounded forced, as if they weren't the ones she wanted to say.

"Sure!" Naruto gave her a big smile before looking away. "Wait, I was going to catch up with Sasuke sometime soon."

"Oh..." She looked at the ground. Naruto quickly smiled at her again as he tried to recover.

"But that probably won't be for a while. We could even hang out right now!"

She gave him a look of shock. "Naruto!"

"Too soon? Oops..."

She smiled, covering her mouth. "Tomorrow?"

He gave her a nod and they parted ways. With more vigor and purpose, he soon found himself at the door to his house. He walked in and collapsed on the couch, thinking about how quickly it had escalated.

(I didn't expect this so soon. Hinata is easy to be around and talk to. Sasuke was too but now it's just weird. Is this how Hinata felt? How did she put up with it?)

He groaned and let his head roll back. He snapped it back forward and noticed a letter on the table. Curious, he picked it up and saw his name on it. Slowly he opened it and read. His eyes lit up as he finished.

(So they want me to be Hokage? Finally! Wait, what about Hinata and Sasuke? Well dammit! Why now? Couldn't this have waited? I guess I have to go in and talk to them tomorrow. I wonder if Sasuke will be there...)

It was maybe a bit early to turn in, but Naruto felt he had to go to bed. He had a lot to do the next day. But even with the extra sleeping time he couldn't quite get comfortable. It was a restless sort of night as he laid awake in his bed, thinking about what the future would hold for him. Exhaustion eventually outweighed this feeling, and soon afterwards, he fell asleep.
