The day went by sluggishly. When it was finally lunch time Zetsu led Tobi off to their usual spot. It was behind one of the buildings of the school. Zetsu sat Tobi down and pulled a lunch pail out of his back pack. Tobi's father would never pack him a lunch so Zetsu shared with him.
Tobi eagerly took a packet of biscuits from Zetsu, eating hungrily. He didn't get breakfast that morning, or even dinner the night before, so he was very hungry. Zetsu watched with sad eyes as Tobi finished off the biscuits. Zetsu sighed before picking up his sandwich and took a bite. When Zetsu noticed Tobi watching him with hungry eyes Zetsu ripped him off a piece and offered it to him. "Thanks, Zetsu-kun!" Tobi cried, smiling cutely. "Tobi is very hungry today...!" Tobi ate the sandwich quickly, hardly stopping to chew. "Slow down, Kohai," Zetsu sighed as he reached over and gave Tobi's head a pet. Tobi smiled sheepishly and nodded. "Okay... Only because Zetsu-kun asked." Tobi leant into the touch, purring softly. Zetsu smiled and chuckled softly. Tobi was so cute. How could anyone hate him? "Zetsu-kun?" Tobi spoke softly when Zetsu pulled his hand away. "Tobi wants a hug." Tobi smiled brightly. "A big hug!" Tobi snuggled in close, sighing happily, before pulling away and tilting his head to the side."Tobi will try and have a sleepover tonight?" he said softly, smiling.
"I know you will, Tobi," Zetsu sighed. "Let's hope that your dad lets you… When you get home, obey his very demand and try your absolute BEST to stay focused, okay?" Tobi nodded. "Tobi will. ...But Tobi... doesn't like it when daddy tells Tobi to do things... Daddy is scary... he hurts Tobi if Tobi says no..." "Don't say no, then," Zetsu said softly as he stroked Tobi's hair. "Do all the chores and all your homework. Be a VERY good boy... Your mom is home, right? After that try to stay near her…" Tobi nodded. "Okay... Tobi wants to talk about something else, now. Tobi doesn't want to talk about mommy or daddy..." Tobi smiled back and nuzzled in close to Zetsu. “Can Tobi hear about Zetsu's brother?" "... Yeah, Tobi," Zetsu said with a small whine. "What do you want to know about him?" "Everything," Tobi smiled. "Well... we were twins," Zetsu began, "His name was Kuroi... He was bolder than I am… He would stand up to people... and be strong... He always protected me… I was the little brother," Zetsu chuckled at the fond memories, "I use to be a huge cry baby." "Zetsu-kun used to cry?" Tobi asked in disbelief. "No! Zetsu-kun never cries!""I do cry, Tobi," Zetsu said with a soft, sad, chuckle. "Kuroi was the strong one. When my dad started to.... he was the one who protected me..."
"Like Zetsu-kun protects Tobi...?" Tobi asked, trying to make Zetsu feel a little bit better; he didn't want to upset Zetsu."Does Zetsu-kun need to talk to Tobi like Tobi talks to Zetsu-kun?" he offered gently.
Zetsu nodded, "Thanks Tobi... When Kuroi... when he died... I had to grow up... I had to start standing up for myself. I had to be like him." Zetsu paused. It hurt to remember the day that Kuroi had been beaten to death. Tobi hugged Zetsu immediately, not intending on letting go.
"Zetsu-kun can always talk to Tobi," Tobi smiled gently. "Tobi will always listen."
"Hehe," Zetsu chuckled sadly, "Kuroi always listened to me...” "You don't have to-" Zetsu was cut off by a loud shout. Both boys looked off in the direction of the shouts to see some other boys approaching them. Tobi whimpered; these were the group of boys who bulled him the most at school. "Get away from the stupid little freak," the boy in the front shouted at Zetsu. "He needs his daily bashing!"
“Z-zetsu-kun..." Tobi whimpered.
Touch him and I'll kick your ass, Deidara," Zetsu shouted as he stood up and got into Deidara's face. "You know I can, too!" "Z-zetsu-kun..." Tobi whimpered, beginning to shake as two of the other boys surrounded them. "...Zetsu-k-kun!"Tobi curled up into a tight little ball, terribly frightened.
"I won't let them touch you, Tobi," Zetsu growled as he glared at the other boys. "Why do you protect that little retard," Deidara chuckled, "even his dad hates him, hm."
Without thinking, Zetsu tossed a hard punch to Deidara's stomach causing him to fly back and land on his ass. Deidara had crossed the line. Zetsu was out for blood now.
Tobi screamed. "Z-zetsu-kun! S-stop! Please!" Zetsu didn't hear Tobi. He jumped on top of Deidara and began pounding his face in. The other boys tried to grab Zetsu but Zetsu knocked them back."You low life," Zetsu shouted.
Tobi screamed again, getting to his feet and grabbing at Zetsu, hugging him from behind tightly, sobbing into the square of Zetsu's back.
"No more...!" Tobi sobbed, shaking. "No more...! Please!"
Zetsu froze. He panted and looked down at Deidara's bloody face. Zetsu closed his eyes and felt tears begin to well up. "Tobi," Zetsu spoke softly, "I'm sorry."
"Get 'em!" The other boys shouted as they all surrounded Zetsu and Tobi. Before a hand could be placed on Tobi Zetsu grabbed him and shielded him from swift kick. Zetsu fell over on top of Tobi and acted as a human shield.
Tobi screamed in terror as he saw the boys kicking out at Zetsu, hurting him badly, and all Tobi could so was cry loudly and try and hide himself in Zetsu's body. Deidara got up and began bashing Zetsu as well. Zetsu refused to cry out in pain. He bit his lip and took it. He was tough. He had to protect Tobi. Tobi was aware of other students gathering around them, cheering them on, and Tobi didn't think he could become more afraid right now than he already was."Z-zetsu-kun!" Tobi sobbed loudly. "T-tobi wants to go home! Leave us alone, D-deidara! P-please!"
"STOP!" Zetsu shouted as he held Tobi tighter. "DEIDARA!""Bitch, hm," Deidara growled as he bashed Zetsu over the head.
Tobi was vaguely aware of some of the teachers arriving at the scene, separating all of the students, and Tobi was so glad to see Iruka-sensei that he crawled out from underneath Zetsu, crawling to the teacher and diving into his arms. Tobi sobbed hysterically as he cuddled in close to Iruka, looking over at Zetsu. Tobi gasped when he saw his best friend. Zetsu was unconcious. Tobi watched as teachers rushed around to Zetsu's side, some yelling at Deidara and his friends, and some picking Zetsu carefully up from the ground. "Zetsu-kun!" Tobi wailed loudly, hiding his face in Iruka's chest.
"Shh, shh..." Iruka soothed gently, picking Tobi up and getting to his feet. "It's okay... Shh..."
Tobi turned and watched as Kakashi approached Zetsu, late as usual. He was handed his student, and Tobi could only whimper as Kakashi carried him away somewhere.
Zetsu's eyes opened slowly. Everything was blurry. He could hear his mother crying. When things cleared Zetsu found that he was in the hospital. Zetsu looked around. How long had he been out? "Mom,' Zetsu spoke softly. Zetsu's mom got up and rushed to her son's side.
"Zetsu," she sobbed as she picked him up and hugged him tightly. "Hunny you’re awake!"
"How long have I been out, Mom," Zetsu asked.
"A week," Zetsu's mother said with tears in her eyes. Zetsu's eyes widened. Tobi had been alone for a WEEK!
"I need to go to Tobi NOW," Zetsu said as he tried to get out of bed but his mother stopped him.
"Hunny, he and his mother are here," Zetsu's mother said softly. Zetsu looked at her with confusion in his eyes. "Hunny... Tobi's mother... She’s about to pass...”
Tobi was lying on the hospital bed, close to his mother, sobbing hysterically. He was covered in new bruises, but he didn't care; he just wanted his mom to stay. "Mommy!" Tobi whimpered, trying to get closer to his mother, but it was physically impossible. "Mommy, don't leave Tobi! Please!"
Tobi's mother reached out and took her son's hand, squeezing it gently, and Tobi only cried louder.
"Don't cry, love..." Tobi's mom whispered, a tear running down her cheek. "Mommy loves you, Tobi..."
"Mommy!" Tobi screamed, crying harder than ever. "Mommy, don't leave Tobi! Don't leave Tobi! Tobi will be a good boy! A good boy! Please, just don't leave!"
Tobi howled in agony as the heart monitor went flat, and he didn't even care when his father slapped him harshly; he just wanted his mother back.
Zetsu fought hard to get out of bed but his mother, and some nurses, held him down. "You can't go," Zetsu's mother sobbed. Zetsu finally broke free and rushed out into the halls. He began to search the rooms for Tobi. Zetsu ran around aimlessly with his mother and nurses chasing after him.
"TOBI!" Zetsu called out.
Tobi looked up when he heard Zetsu calling for him. He stood up and shakily walked to the door, opening it and calling out for Zetsu."Zetsu-kun!" Tobi whimpered, searching desperately for Zetsu. "Zetsu-kun, Tobi is here!"
Zetsu began running off in the direction of Tobi's voice and soon found Tobi. Zetsu ran up to Tobi and hugged him tightly. Tears flowed out of Zetsu’s eyes as he saw the condition Tobi's body was in."Oh god, Tobi, I'm so sorry," Zetsu sobbed as his mother and the nurses caught up.
Zetsu held Tobi tightly and refused to let him go even when his mother begged him to do so.
"Tobi," Zetsu sobbed as he hugged the smaller boy tightly, "I'm so sorry."
"Zetsu-kun..." Tobi sobbed as he looked up at the older male. "...Zetsu-kun... Why did you leave Tobi...?"
Zetsu opened his mouth to speak but no words came out at first. A moment later Zetsu said four simple words..."I am so sorry," Zetsu sobbed.
Tobi tilted his head, unable to understand what Zetsu was apologising for. He didn't say anything for a few moments, but without warning, someone from behind him starting pulling Tobi off his friend. Tobi whimpered and clutched to Zetsu tighter, not wanting to part, and as he turned to see who was trying to pull him away, he was terrified to see that it was his father.
"Come on, Tobi." His father growled. "We're going home. Get your ass out to the car."
Zetsu held onto his friend refusing to let him go. Why was his father such a monster? Who could possibly hurt Tobi?"Please don't take Tobi!" Zetsu cried.
Tobi sobbed loudly as his father's pulling only got harder and he could feel the man's fingers digging in deep enough to bruise him."Daddy..." Tobi sobbed. "No... Please... no more... Tobi can't take it anymore..."
Tobi's father pried Toby and Zetsu apart knocking Zetsu to the floor. Tobi's father began dragging Tobi away while Zetsu's mother and the nurse rushed to aid Zetsu. "Daddy..." Tobi whimpered as he was dragged out of the hospital and over to the car. His father just opened the car door and threw him in roughly, and Tobi was too scared to do anything but sit where his father had thrown him.
"I hate you so fucking much." His dad snarled, starting the car up and reversing out. "You worthless little piece of shit. How could I have ever fathered something like you? I wish you died instead of
your mother!"
Hours after the even Zetsu was checked out of the hospital. On the drive home Zetsu refused to speek. When they got home he ran straight to his room. Zetsu slammed the door and ran to his bed. He began sobbing into his pillow. Minutes later he wound up at his window crying and staring at the stars.
It wasn't fair. Poor Toby getting beaten because of things he couldn't have helped.
''Toby should get taken away from that man,'' Zetsu sobbed softly to himself. ''Why won't anyone take him away.. Toby is sweet and he doesn't deserve that kind of pain. Why can't some one take him far away...''
Suddenly Zetsu got an idea. He could take Toby away! With that idea in mind Zetsu jumped up and ran to his closet. He grabbed out and old backpack and emptied it. He then grabbed some clothes and shoved them in. Next he grabbed his jar of money. Zetsu then pushed the bag under the bed and snuck out to the kitchen. He didn't want his mother to catch him. Once in the kitchen Zetsu grabbed a loaf of bread and a near full jar of peanut butter. He also grabbed a few oranges and some apples before rushing off to his room. He packed the food into his pack and put on his shoes. Zetsu then stepped up to his window. With one big deep breath Zetsu pushed the window open. He then climbed out and began running down the street. He had to get to Toby's house soon.
Tobi lay on the bed, quivering in pain as he wiped at his wet eyes. His father had, once again, spent the majority of the day bashing him.
"Zetsu-kun..." Tobi whimpered softly. "Zetsu-kun... Tobi misses mommy... Zetsu-kun..."
Silence.
Tobi sobbed loudly as he knew that no one was coming to save him.
Minutes passed. Or maybe it was hours? Tobi had long ago lost track of the time. All he knew was that when he saw something moving outside of his window, he was afraid. He sat up and whimpered, pulling his blankets up and over him to hide under.
"Mommy..." He sobbed. "Zetsu-kun... Help Tobi...!"
"Tobi," Zetsu whipered from the window. Tobi looked shocked. "Pack some things! I'm taking you away from here!"
"But Tobi..." the boy whimpered. "...Daddy will... No..."
Tobi's sobs became louder as his fright increased. What if his father found out that he had run away? Not only that, but Tobi couldn't leave -- his mother's possessions still laid around the home and it was all the boy had left to remember her by.
"Come on, Tobi," Zetsu pleaded. "I want you to be safe... I care about you, Tobi."
Zetsu turned to the door and glared at Tobi's father. Tobi's dad growled and shot daggers at them with his eyes."And where do you think you're going?" The man hissed, his eyes full of loathing. "Think you're running away, do you?"
Tobi, someone who could never lie -- no matter what -- whimpered and nodded, hiding behind Zetsu.
"Y-yes, daddy..." He whispered.
The man sneered as he took in the pathetic sight.
"Don't you dare hurt Tobi," Zetsu hissed as the man took a step forward.
Report · 1:06pmTobi's father on laughed and surveyed the two boys closely.
"Why would I care if the little fuck wants to leave?" He growled. "It's not my problem. No one cares about you, anyway, Tobi. Feel free to run away -- I, for one, certainly will not miss you. Run away and NEVER come back here, you pathetic little whelp."
Zetsu looked back at Tobi who wimpered. Zetsu then looked back at Tobi's father. Zetsu then gentelly took Tobi's wrist
and gave him a smile of aprobation before gentelly pulling him along.
Tobi looked at Zetsu with confusion written all over his face. The boy's eyes were wide and his head slightly cocked, and he wore a large frown.
"It'll be okay," Zetsu soothed as he took Tobi's hand and gave it a soft squeeze. "I'm going to take you far away from here."
Zetsu began to walk Tobi down the street. Once Tobi's house was no longer in sight Zetsu sighed.
"We're going to hop a train," Zetsu said after a long silence.
"Mommy..." He whimpered, tearing up again. "Mommy..."
Tobi was sure that he would've fallen into another breakdown if he hadn't felt Zetsu wrap him him in a protective hug then and there.
"Zetsu-kun..." The boy whispered. "...Zetsu-kun..."
With that, the boy turned around in Zetsu's embrace and hugged back tightly.
"Where ever this takes us will be our new home," Zetsu said softly as he helped Tobi into the train car.
Tobi was well aware of the people staring at him because of all his bruises and cuts, but he didn't care. He was feeling rather numb at that moment.
"Let's go find out where we are," Zetsu said, "Then I'll make you lunch."
He wasn't too sure about their arrival. Though he had never been to New York before, he had heard stories about it and it made him uncomfortable.
"Okay," Zetsu said as he opened the map and studied it, "we aren't that far from the NAtional park.. It's just a few blocks... That way."
Zetsu then pointed in a direction and led Tobi that way.
Tobi followed, on edge but also high alert. He was just relieved when they arrived at the park not too long after.
Zetsu sat them down on a bench and Tobi was just glad that Zetsu was there with him, but he wodndered if this had been such a great idea.
Zetsu sighed as he pulled the bread and peanut butter out of his pack, "You hungry."
Tobi nodded and looked eagerly at the "meal" that was promised. "Yes, Zetsu-kun..."Zetsu pulled out his pocket knife that he kept around just in case and made Tobi a peanutbutter sandwhich"Well... We should each find a job.. Not many people will hire us tho," Zetsu sighed. "We'll have to find part-time jobs. For a while we'll have to camp out in the park, tho."
Tobi tilted his head. "Camp out...? But... it's not safe..."
"I'll protect you," Zetsu said softly.Zetsu's face turned pink. He felt his heart twiched. Did Tobi know what he was saying? It was starnge.. Zetsu found himself wanting to say it as well.
"I-I love you to Tobi."
"Yay!! Zetsu-kun loves Tobi back!"
The smaller boy smiled and leaned forward, placing a small kiss on Zetsu's cheek before pulling away with a gentle smile on his face.
