Many Trials to Come
Sakura, Naruto and Kakashi were gathered in Obito’s hospital room. It took 3 days of intensive care for Obito to simply speak.
“Do you think Sasuke will be okay?” Obito asked. Today was the day of Sasuke’s trial. No one had seen him since he had returned to Konoha. Tsunade said that it was mandatory for them to keep him in a cell until it was time for him to go to trial.
“Sure he will. Even if the council decides they won’t forgive him, he is a Demi-God and Savior of the world. Any country would have him,” Naruto stated.
“Well, let’s hope that he can stay. Team 7 was just reunited!” Kakashi chirped.
“Hai,” the group chimed.
Kakashi gave Obito a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder before team 7 took off. The three looked surprisingly cool. These petty formalities were not nearly as daunting as the challenges they just surpassed. If you had to guess by looking at them, you’d think they were on a leisurely stroll. Kakashi and Sakura teased Naruto about his new found romance with the Hyuuga heiress. The blonde buried his hands in his pockets, a light blush colored his face.
“What is she doing right now, anyway? I thought she would be glued to your side from now on.” The pinkette pondered.
Naruto stopped in his tracks and stared hard at the ground.
“The Hyuuga household is morning the loss of their dead.”
And the rest of the trip to the elders’ spire was in silence. Naruto wondered how Hinata was dealing with the grief of losing a loved one. Kakashi wondered what would become of Obito. Sakura wondered what would have happened if she simply had been able to keep up with Naruto and Sasuke.
When the team reached the trial room, they were surprised to find Sasuke unbound and approaching them. Behind a table on the opposite side of the room, a panel of elders as well as the Daimyo himself. Sasuke nodded at the team and then turned to nod to the chairs. Each one of them had a seat as the Daimyo began to speak.
“I believe now we are just waiting on one person.”
On cue, Tsunade entered the room, Shizune in tow.
“Great. Let’s begin.”
Tsunade began to produce a lot of evidence in Sasuke’s case that he was misled about the truth of the village slaughter. Covert reports and documentation were revealed which made Sasuke visibly upset. Word for word instructions given to Uchiha Itachi as well as the purposeful and deliberate incrimination of Uchiha Itachi present folder after folder.
Then each member of team 7 was split up to give individual accounts of Sasuke’s desertion and reconciliation with the group. Naruto said that he could not have done it without them. Kakashi said that Sasuke’s judgment was paramount in their victory.
Sakura… her interrogation was more in depth. It was long since understood that Sakura had once ben head over heels in love with the raven. Over and over, she was asked whether or not her feelings were getting in the way of a true assessment of Sasuke’s performance and persona. After an hour of questioning, she snapped.
“Sasuke has been as cold and aloof as he has ever been and I can finally see that it isn’t cool anymore. I grew tired of trying to win him. I don’t want to any more. Sasuke independently decided to help ups. Katsuya was sealed because he and Naruto worked together, as a team. The only thing I feel about this whole ordeal is regret and envy. I wish that I was able to keep up with the two of them! I wish I played a bigger role in the defeat of Katsuya! I wish for once that the 2 of them were looking at my back! Instead I’m looking at theirs. I will always be behind them. You can do whatever the fuck you want with Sasuke. I don’t care. I just want to go back to doing what I do best. I shouldn’t be here wasting my time. I should be at the Konoha cancer learning how to cure fucking… cancer or something because we both know at least that is something I’m better at doing. Are we done?”
The elders nodded and Sakura marched out of the room.
After perhaps 2 hours of deliberation, the panel gave their verdict.
“Sasuke will continue to be a citizen of Konoha but must attend mandatory phycological evaluations with Ibiki-san once a week. Normally in these circumstances, some sort of public service is in order, but Sasuke has had quite a hand in giving the entire world a public service,” the elderly woman took a moment to bow her head to the raven. “We feel your time has been served. We will leave the fate of Uchiha’s future in your hands, Sasuke.”
Team 7 celebrated with Korean bbq and sake.
“Kanpai!” They all shouted, maybe a little too loud. But now was a better time than any to celebrate. Just days ago, they were not even certain they’d be alive! But here they were together again. Naruto had a new love. Sasuke was free. Most importantly, they won the war.
“Dobe, I hope that you’ve given up on that dream to be homage. You know it is only a matter of time before the village comes around and starts adoring me again.”
“Whatever, asshole!” Naruto slurred over his shot glass. “They love me so much around here, people are considering renaming the village Naruto-ville.”
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to put up with being the Hokage of Naruto-ville. You’d make a nice mascot.”
Sakura couldn’t believe that after everything they had just been through… had been going through, that they could just fall back into the same routine and pretend that nothing had ever happened to them.
“Aaah…” Kakashi’s eye was dark behind his mask. “There is a problem, though. You guys are still genin. What kind of village would let a genin be in charge of their ninja affairs?”
“EEEHHH!” Naruto screeched. “That’s right! WE ARE GENIN!”
“Don’t worry, dobe. The chuunin exams were supposed to be held in Konoha next month. I’m sure once everyone is done celebrating, they will get back to regularly scheduled business.”
“Aah, do you guys want to take it together?”
“I’m already a chuunin… but I think it is time for me to try for the jounin exams. I’m in,” Sakura said.
“Me too. I think we need to perform in teams anyway. I’d rather work with you idiots than… other idiots.” Sasuke’s mind wandered to Karin who was still busy obsessing over him.
“Cool! Well, look at the time! I have to go… I have a date with Hinata!” As Naruto tried to slink away, Kakashi called out, “Do not take her out for Ramen!”
Naruto pouted and was out of sight.
Sasuke began to rise from the table as well, “Well now that I’m a free man, I need to check out the Uchiha complex and sort out some sort of living situation.
“I’ll go with you,” Kakashi and Sasuke left Sakura alone at the table.
“I guess I’ll go and try to find a cure for cancer or something.” With hands in her pockets, Sakura made her way to the hospital.
