CHAPTER II Yoshi!
An unseemly whistling noise woke Genma from a relatively dreamless sleep and he leapt from his bed, producing a kunai from under his pillow and preparing for an attack. As his blanket drifted to the floor, the whistling continued and no attack came. After a moment he recognized the alarm as his kettle boiling over in the kitchenette. He peered around the partition that isolated his bed roll from the rest of the room and observed that someone had set up a placemat and a plate on the low table and there was a skillet smoking quietly next to the boisterous little kettle on the stove.
"Alright! I'm ready, I'm ready!"
There was excitement in the Akiyuki house, a cozy two-bedroom on the second story over a workshop. The sign hanging over the shop door read "Taka's Lumberworks" and while it might normally be a hub of sawdust and bustling activity, there were two things keeping it quiet today. First of all, the Taka Akiyuki for whom the shop was named was out of town on business, selling his wares and finding new customers. And secondly, Mrs Akiyuki and her father-in-law were busy doting on their genin daughter and granddaughter, respectively. Shiranui was adopted. Her flyaway dark hair, which her mother was cheerfully trying to tame with a comb, did not match the woman's curly auburn hair, nor did her black opal eyes match the woman's warm brown ones. Even less did she look like her grandfather, whose blonde hair and blue eyes were shared by his son - although frankly it had been a long time since the old man's white hair had been true blonde. "Papa-san, pass me that ribbon." Mrs Akiyuki said in her soft voice, ignoring Shiranui's outburst and waving at the long pink ribbon resting on the table. The old man squinted and brought the ribbon over to the two, handing it off before kneeling before the young girl. "Alright, you say? Well, well, now you have your lucky ribbon. And a lucky apple," he said, patting the red fruit in the child's hand before pointing to the breast-pocket of her vest. "And your Obaa-san's lucky penny. How're ya feeling?" "Lucky!" Shiranui squeaked with her gap-toothed smile. "Got the lucky underwear too?" The old man teased. "'Jii-san!" Shiranui squealed and her cheeks turned from their cheery pink to a shade that almost matched the fruit in her hand. Her mother finished tying back her hair and walked around to stand next to the old man, placing a hand on his shoulder as he rocked back on his heels laughing. "Okay kiddo, go break a leg why don't cha!" The old man said with a grin and victorious fist pump, which Shiranui imitated before more solemnly smiling up at her mother. Mrs Akiyuki gave her a closed-eyed smile in return and Shiranui bowed her head once quickly at the both of them. "Okay, here I go!" Shiranui said and turned on her heel, hurrying out the door and down the stairs that ran down the outside of the building. She kept going down the street for a ways before turning a corner and slowing down. Where am I going again? she wondered to herself for a moment before remembering the meeting spot and picking up her stride again. Her team was going to meet on one of the bridges by the river. She wasn't far from her house when she spotted one of the other genin who she remembered from test day. She hadn't been with Shiranui's class at all but she'd suddenly showed up and passed the test and was put on the same team. She was really pretty, even from this distance, even if she seemed kind of standoff-ish. Shiranui ran towards the girl, trying to remember what her name was. "Hey! You're Izumi, right?" The girl stopped and looked at Shiranui as she approached. Her white hair was longer than Shiranui's, most of it was tied into a ponytail behind her head but her bangs were swept long and low across her face over her hitai-ate. She was wearing a short lilac yukata with pale yellow butterflies on it and there was a long red ribbon tied around her waist. Other than that, she wore black sandals, black leggings, and black fingerless gloves. She must have been from a wealthy family, her clothes were so perfect and clean. Shiranui flushed when the girl didn't say anything and just looked her over, taking in her knee-length blue vest with it's pale pink embroidery and her short navy romper. Her eyes lingered on Shiranui's hips where she had tied her hitai-ate, thinking it looked much better as a belt. She was regretting that decision when the girl finally spoke up. "Hi." Shiranui waited for more but nothing came. "Great, I thought maybe I'd forgotten your name. That would be so embarrassing." Still nothing more than a bland stare. "I'm Shiranui. We're in a team together." And more nothing; Shiranui wished she knew a jutsu for melting into the ground. "Wanna walk with me?" "Okay." Izumi said, turning and continuing to walk in the direction of the bridge. Shiranui missed a beat before skipping to catch up with the other girl, who was a few inches taller and certainly moved a lot faster and more smoothly than she did. This'll be great!" Shiranui squeaked happily. Izumi glanced at her, but said nothing. "I mean, I thought I'd be on a team with two boys. That's normal, you see, but this is going to be much better, I'm sure." "You are." "I am what?" Shiranui asked, stopping for a second but hurrying on when Izumi didn't stop with her. "The other one, Senjo Yuriki, he's a boy." "Yes?" "Then you are on a team with two boys." "Ehh?" Shiranui stumbled and Izumi finally stopped and looked at her. Shiranui stared back at those empty amber eyes and it slowly began to dawn on her. She slowly turned a redder shade of pink. "You're a... you're not a girl?" "No." Shiranui was bright red now. "Oh..." She managed in her smallest voice. Izumi's mouth moved into something that looked like it might be a sympathetic smile, except there was no sympathy and the smile didn't reach HIS eyes. Shiranui quickly bowed her head and held the apple out in both hands towards Izumi. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I thought you were a girl, I'm so sorry, please accept this lucky apple as an apology." She waited with her head bowed for what seemed like forever before a hand took the fruit and she peeked up at the boy. "I like apples," he said simply before continuing towards the bridge. Shiranui looked after him and let out a huge sigh and flicked herself in the forehead before hurrying to catch up with Izumi, her head still bowed slightly and her cheeks still quite red. So much for not embarrassing herself. When Izumi and Shiranui reached the bridge where they were supposed be meeting Genma, Shiranui finally felt brave enough to try to talk to Izumi again. At first she sat down to wait, but seeing that the boy was still standing and watching her, she stood back up. He still hadn't eaten the apple and was idly rolling it again in his hands. As Shiranui watched, he started doing tricks with it, rolling the fruit over the backs of his hands and over his fingertips.
"Sugoi," Shiranui whispered after a few minutes, totally mystified. "How do you do that? Is it a chakra control technique?" "No," he said. She thought that would be it when he looked at her and stopped twirling the apple. "It does not need chakra, just rhythm." "Rhythm? Like music?" "A little like music. Watch," Izumi held the apple out in one hand and just rolled it around. At first Shiranui didn't understand, but as she watched his rotated his hand and the apple rolled around to the back and back to his palm, and again. There was definitely a sort of beat to the motion of his hand, guiding the apple around. He stopped and held it towards her. "You try." Shiranui shrivelled a little, this was just her day for recurring embarrassment it seemed: she knew she was going to drop the apple. But she accepted it all the same and started rolling it like she'd watched him do. That part was easy, now she just had to flip her hand over without dropping it. As the apple fell she scrambled to save it, only to have Izumi catch her flailing arm and the apple. "Try again," he said, holding the apple out to her again. Shiranui pouted and took it and started rolling it slowly again. "Why do you wear girl's clothes?" She asked, hoping to change the subject away from this non-chakra-based exercise. Izumi looked at her and his eyes twitched ever so slightly. "I like this clothing." Izumi looked past Shiranui and she turned her head to follow his gaze. There was another boy, maybe an inch shorter than Izumi, wearing cargo shorts and a black t-shirt. He had bright green eyes and his gold-brown hair stuck out every which way. Shiranui was pleased to see that his hitai-ate was dangling around his neck like a loose scarf, it was Senjo Yuriki the third member of their team. When Senjo got closer he smirked and gave them two thumbs up. "Nice." His voice was carefree and smug. Shiranui glanced wide-eyed at Izumi and back at Senjo. "What's nice?" She asked. "Are you Senjo Yuriki?" Izumi asked. "The one and only, honey! This team has a nice balance to me." Senjo said with a smirk. Shiranui gaped and covered her mouth and looked at Izumi, who did nothing in response to the moniker. Genma had been waiting under a masking jutsu to see how the team behaved before meeting him and get an idea of what kind of kids they were. Feeling confident he understand them well enough, he removed the jutsu and appeared standing by the edge of the bridge, startling Shiranui into dropping the apple - which Izumi rescued yet again, also catching her arm to prevent her from falling in surprise. "Sensei," Senjo exclaimed before Genma could speak. "Nice entrance! Are you going to teach us that?" "Eventually," Genma said with a smirk. Senjo was certainly starting to remind him a little of himself. Not too much like, he hoped, remembering how much of a trouble maker he'd been at that age. "First things first, I think it's pretty clear that I will be your teacher. My name is Genma Shiranui, but you can call me Genma-sensei. Now what are all of your names?" "Senjo Yuriki," Senjo chimed in. "Your coolest student." "Um, Shiranui Akiyuki," Shiranui said quietly, wondering how he would take sharing a name. "Wait Shiranui and Shiranui? That's overkill," Senjo said and gave her a pitying smile. Shiranui pouted at him. "Yes, I have been thinking about that and I've made a decision." Genma said, kneeling down and putting a hand on Shiranui's shoulder. She looked up at him, dark eyes full of worry. Genma smiled. "How about we give you a nickname? We'll call you Hakumei, because right now you're just a baby light. Someday, when you're stronger and a full shinobi, you can go back to Shiranui." "And if I beat you, you can be Hakumei?" Shiranui asked in a quiet voice. "Yes. If you beat me." Genma said with a smile. "Okay!" A smile that almost matched her photograph appeared and Genma bit his cheek and stood back up. "I'm Shiranui Akiyuki, but you can call me Hakumei." "Wait, that's no fair, we should all get nicknames." Senjo muttered. "You don't need a nickname, Senjou." Shiranui said and stuck her tongue out at him. "Don't call me that!" Senjo fumed. "Alright, calm down, we can't start fighting this early in the day." Genma said, putting a hand on each child's head. Was it going to be like this every moment? Maybe he should have gone with Kakashi's method. "Ehem, I am called Izumi Yamashiro." Izumi said softly, bowing his head properly. Genma nodded back and released the other two. All three stared up at him expectantly. "Very good, now that introductions are over, we can get into some training exercises." Genma turned and began leading them towards one of the training grounds. He didn't plan to use Kakashi's test, but he would figure out what all of them had skills for and where they were needing the most improvement. The three children followed along behind him. "This is awesome," Senjo exclaimed. ""No offense Sensei, but it would be even better if you were a girl too. But I can live with this." "Perv." Shiranui whispered to Izumi. "Come again?" Genma asked, trying not to break his stride. "Come on Sensei, if you were me, you'd want to be surrounded by girls too." Senjo said, jogging up alongside Genma. Genma paused a beat but continued walking. "Come again?" Genma asked, still trying to figure exactly what the boy was getting at. "Mr Yuriki has believed me to be a girl." Izumi spoke up from behind him. Genma stopped and turned to look at all three of them. Senjo was looking at Izumi in horror and Shiranui had both hands over her mouth and was turning red with silent laughter. Izumi just shook his shook and gave Senjo falsely sympathetic smile, much like the one he'd given Shiranui. Genma eyed Izumi and could easily see how the boy had been mistaken about his teammate's identity and he cracked a slow smile and tried not to laugh. "Keh, whose fault is that, huh?" Senjo exclaimed, half-jumping away from Izumi and hexing him with crossed fingers as if he had cooties. "If I didn't want everyone to think I was a girl I wouldn't dress like a girl! And everyone thinks you're a girl, not just me!" "I didn't. He has a vibe. You can't tell?" Shiranui insisted, and to his credit Izumi said nothing about how she too had mistaken him for a girl. Senjo turned red and looked like he was going to say something back but instead shoved both hands in his pant pockets and started slouching off towards the training ground, muttering to himself about cross dressers and identity crises. Shiranui giggled and skipped after him. Izumi glanced up at Genma before shrugging and following after them. Genma shook quietly with laughter and brought up the rear. Maybe this wouldn't be so terrible, at the very least he seemed guaranteed to be entertained, and the brown-haired boy seemed like he'd been dealt his and probably won't be too much of a handful from here on out. Thanks for reading! Sorry this chapter took so long to post - I've been focused on one of my other stories. As always I love reviews and ideas :)
Chapter FunFact: That trick Izumi is doing with apple is Contact Juggling. I probably explained it terribly, but it's a form of object manipulation. Very cool to see in person! Look it up!
