Kisame lagged behind Itachi until Itachi stopped, lifting his head up. By the tightening of his shoulders, I knew he knew I was there. “Go on ahead. Kisame. Don’t wait up for me.”
“Are you sure, Itachi?”
“Go. I need to do something alone.”
Kisame stared at the shorter man for a few minutes before nodding and turning away.
Minutes passed before Itachi said, “He’s gone . . . but you already know that. So come on out. You would know if I lied to you.”
I stepped out of the shadows, walked straight up to him.
“Starlight . . . it’s been awhile.”
“So it has.”
“Do you still think you are stronger than I?”
“I don’t know. You tell me. You know my strength.”
He gave a small chuckle. “True. You have always been very powerful. From what I know of my power and what I know of yours, you’re still stronger.”
“I am, but you’re starting to catch up.”
“I heard that you had settled into the Hidden Leaf Village.”
“So I have. How have you been, Itachi?”
“The same as always. You?”
“So, so. I’ve been talking with your brother.”
He looked away for a minute. “How is he?”
“Not well. He still thinks you’re responsible for the massacre.”
“I am the one who did it.”
“But he doesn’t know the full truth.”
“There are very few people who do.”
“I came here because I need to decide what I can tell him, but I can’t tell him everything because it’ll mess up the future. There are things he needs to do before he knows the full truth. But I don’t see the damage in telling him a small bit.”
“And you need me to help you decide how much you’re going to tell him.”
I nodded. “Yes, but there’s more to it.”
“What is it?”
“I need you to do something.”
“What?”
“Before you die, tell him everything yourself. Tell him the truth. He’ll take it easier from you and you’ll know what to say so he doesn’t destroy the Leaf Village.”
“Ah. So that’s it. You know he’ll want vengeance on the Hidden Leaf.”
“Yes. If you tell him everything about Danzo, you can help him decide to take vengeance on just Danzo, not the Leaf. The Hidden Leaf had nothing to do with it.”
“I will do what I can, but when do you think I should tell him?”
“In two years, right before you die.”
“I’ll die in two years. How do I die?”
“I can’t tell you. The only thing I can tell you is you die of natural causes and you will know when it starts. Until then, stay away from Sasuke. When you start to feel like your time is ending, start searching him out. You’ll know the right time to tell him.”
A small pause. “So tell me, Starlight. How do you know all that you know? You know my secret. I think you should let me in on yours. Whom would I tell?”
I hesitated. “I’m a time traveler and I’m originally from the future. It’s why I don’t age. The time I’m from is far away from here and I know all of what happens up to that time.”
“Where did you come from?”
“I . . . don’t know. I can remember the future and what happens to Gaara and Sasuke and you and the Leaf and everyone and everything else, but . . . I can’t remember my life. I can’t remember my parents’ names or anything about me. The only way I know my name is because before I first teleported through time, Gaara found me and he told me my name. I don’t remember my life. I don’t remember anything about it. I don’t remember anything before the time I woke up falling in midair. My original plan when I came back was to find Kakashi and to stop him from dying.”
“He dies?”
“He dies. When I first came back, I needed his help. I needed him to help me learn to control the new powers that were developing inside me. I had this feeling that he had helped me develop my powers before, but the new powers that were showing up were stronger and I knew that he could help me learn to control them, like he helped me learn to control my powers when I was younger. But he was dead in my time period, so my original goal was to find him, stop him from dying and see if he could help me control my powers.”
“Now you know how to control your powers really well and you’ve been in two wars. You’re in the history books.”
I nodded. “Yes. Now I don’t need Kakashi’s help, but I still plan to keep him from dying. The feeling I get from my old life is he was someone that was dear to me. He was a father figure to me, someone that helped to guide me. Not my biological father, but someone who took the place of one. Maybe my real father was dead, but I think Kakashi was my Sensei. I get the feeling that I grew up with Naruto and Sakura and Sasuke and the others, but I don’t remember any of it. I don’t remember how we met, or why I know them, but I feel like I grew up with them. That maybe I was once part of Team 7, with Kakashi as my Sensei. It’s why I felt that Kakashi could help me learn to control my powers.”
“I see. So you think you grew up with my little brother. How old were they when you came back from the future?”
“They were nineteen or twenty, like I am now.”
“So if you were in this time period naturally and at your correct age for this time period, you’d be about twelve.”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“That’s one hell of a conundrum.”
Sigh. “I know.”
“You don’t remember any of your old life?”
“Nothing. I just get faint feelings from it.”
“Your secret will die with me.”
A scent made my nose twitch. Uh oh. “Thank you, Itachi. I have to go.”
He gave a small nod. “Good luck. When my time starts to run out, I’ll search you out before I find Sasuke.” He turned to leave, then stopped. Over his shoulder he called, “Do you know how powerful Sasuke becomes? Will he be able to fight Danzo?”
“Sasuke becomes more powerful than you could ever dream of being. He will surpass my own power.”
A small nod. “Then he will be able to defeat Danzo, if he sets his mind to it.”
“Goodbye, Itachi.” I watched him leave. A few minutes passed. “How long have you been spying?”
Kakashi walked over to me. “The whole time. So . . . that’s how you know so much about what’s going to happen.”
I didn’t answer.
“So if you were in the right time period right now, at the right age, you’d be calling me ‘Kakashi-Sensei’ instead of just ‘Kakashi.’”
I nodded. “Yes, probably.”
“When do I die?”
“Not for two years. You die in battle.”
“And you came back to stop it from happening.” His eye turned to me. “You seem to have control of your powers now.”
“Yeah. What are you doing out here, anyway?”
“My team had a mission. Sasuke learnt a new Jutsu.”
“Has he mastered it?”
“He is very good with it, but he doesn’t create as many clones as Naruto does.”
“Well, that’s to be expected. Naruto overdoes everything.”
“True.”
“So . . . you going to say anything about my secret?”
He shook his head. “No. I don’t see why I should. It doesn’t change anything.” He started walking. “You coming to the camp?”
I nodded. “Yeah.” We arrived at the camp. There were four tents around a fire. “You gave them each a tent of their own?”
“I figured Naruto and Sasuke alone would tear a tent to shreds and Sakura would just try to be near Sasuke, which would cause the next Great War.”
I nodded. “Yeah, very true.” I sat on the log next to the fire. Kakashi sat next to me.
“So . . . Itachi. . . . You seemed to be pretty chummy with him.”
“I know the truth about what he’s done.”
