Lying Sleeping
Months passed since Sasuke’s funeral, there was no body to bury and it was actually surprising even with Sasuke being a missing-nin, the villagers came out to the funeral to mourn his death. The villagers still loved him no matter what he did; the villagers had so much hope in the only surviving Uchiha.
Naruto didn’t attend the funeral, he still couldn’t accept that Sasuke was dead and to bury an empty casket almost gave him hope that Sasuke was still alive. Everyone worried about him, Sakura and Iruka came over every day to make sure Naruto was eating. He looked so fragile and weak, he lost so much weight, he no longer trained, and he stayed in bed day in and day out. Tsunade already tried to knock some sense into him but Naruto wouldn’t react or looked at her with such lifeless eyes.
It was as if he had given up on everything. He felt as if there was no reason to continue living, his best friend and lover was dead, there was nothing holding him to the world of the living.
Today was no different, Naruto was lying in bed holding onto Sasuke’s necklace and looking outside his window. The sun was high in the sky and birds chirped but it meant nothing to him. His sunken in face was a heart wrenching sight to see. His once golden tan skin looked almost pale and foreign for the once cheery and happy young adult.
Naruto found out weeks ago that he was out of tears; spending the first two weeks crying from sun up to sun down had left him dry.
Sakura was making her way to her best friend’s house with a container of miso ramen in her bag. She hated that Naruto had given up his life after he found out that Sasuke was killed. Maybe she shouldn’t have told him, maybe they could have pretended for a little longer, at least until they found his body. At least then Naruto would still have false hope that Sasuke was going to come back.
She sat with Naruto at home during Sasuke’s funeral, Naruto refused to get out of bed and kept holding onto Sasuke’s necklace, touching the charm softly before crying himself to sleep. It wasn’t fair, she had already lost Sasuke and now she knew it was only a matter of time before she lost Naruto. Her vision was clouded with tears threaten to fall.
Sakura shook her head; she couldn’t think like that, she had to be strong for Naruto, maybe one day he’ll pull out of this. Yes, he’ll pull out of this and be his old loud, rude, and annoying self in no time. She nodded and took a deep breath.
Suddenly a surge of charka caught Sakura’s attention. She gasped and turned her head in the direction of the surge. It couldn’t be…could it? She didn’t want to be hopeful only to be wrong, the presence felt so familiar.
Naruto just wanted this all to end. He didn’t want to take another breath. He just wanted to die, he felt so pathetic. Sakura and Iruka were always over to feed him, bathe him, and clean his house. He didn’t want to be a burden to anyone anymore; he needed to end this now.
It nearly took all of Naruto’s energy for him to sit up in bed. He panted and felt light headed. He rested for a couple minutes before turning his body to get out of bed. He let his feet hit the cold hard wood floor and he used the bed to help him balance to stand up. Moving his right foot first and with him being so weak he fell to the ground.
He hit the ground hard and started coughing. He tried to regain his breath and opened his eyes and looked in front of him, Sasuke’s necklace must have fell out of his hand when he fell over. He tried to reach for the necklace but it was out of reach. He strained and tried to move closer to the charm but with no luck. He grunted and kept trying until he grew weak. He laid his head on the floor and looked at the charm out of his reach.
The necklace was just like Sasuke, always just barely out of reach. Just when Naruto thought he had him for good, Sasuke had always left in the middle of the night. New found tears began to fall, Naruto frantically tried for the necklace as his vision blurred and the wound in his heart reopened.
The raven haired young adult had finally fully recovered from his near death experience and heard that news of his death reached his love. They had even buried an empty casket. It broke his heart; he knew Naruto was in tremendous pain. He could only imagine now Naruto must be feeling. He couldn’t imagine ever losing Naruto, the pain would be too unbearable to live.
Sasuke ran as fast as his legs would go, he was so far from the village and his love. He was found by an old and very kind couple who had nursed him back to health. He was at the brink of death and would have been dead if the couple never crossed his path. Sasuke was in a coma for about a month and had no memories after he woke up. It wasn’t until the old man mentioned a funeral in Konoha for the last remaining Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha, and they couldn’t find his body. He started to remember everything and knew he had to get back to Naruto.
He could only hope that he wasn’t too late. He had finally reached the village and quickly made his way to Naruto’s apartment. He didn’t want to fight with the door and always new that Naruto kept his bedroom window unlocked. He peeked into his window and could see Naruto’s bed and the sheets were in a mess. He didn’t see Naruto until last minute.
Sasuke quickly pulled the window open and ran to Naruto’s body on the floor. He wasn’t moving, the floor was still wet with Naruto’s tears and Sasuke looked at Naruto’s outreached arm and found his necklace. His heart broke when he rolled Naruto on his back. His beautiful golden skin, sun kissed hair, and eyes as blue and deep as the ocean was now pale, and the blonde hair almost looked dull and white. He checked for a pulse and found a weak and faint heartbeat. He let out a sigh of relief and pulled Naruto into his arms.
Just as Sasuke got to his feet and holding Naruto bridal style in his arms, the bedroom door burst open. Sasuke’s eyes met Sakura’s. He could see tears of happiness in her eyes and her smile. Sasuke couldn’t help but smile back before casting his eyes down to Naruto in his arms.
“Oh my god Naruto! Sasuke put him on the bed.” Sasuke did as he was told and placed the blonde on the bed and Sakura began to run tests on him. Sasuke stood back and waited anxiously. It was almost an hour later before Sakura stopped running around the blonde and the small apartment. She looked up at Sasuke and smiled to reassure him that Naruto was okay. “He had himself over worked but he’s stable now, he needs some rest.” Sasuke nodded.
“Thank you.” He said before Sakura threw her arms around his neck. She hugged him and cried softly. Sasuke was taken aback by Sakura’s behavior before he wrapped his arms around her.
“We thought you were dead, we buried an empty casket. Naruto hasn’t been the same. I was so afraid I was going to lose him too. I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you both. Naruto had given up, thank god you’re alive.” Sakura cried. Sasuke hugged her harder; he had to admit he missed his best female friend. He knew she had been through almost as much as Naruto has. She looked at the two as if they were her brothers.
“I thought I was too, I wish I could have been back sooner. I wish I had never left in the first place, I’m so sorry to put you and Naruto in this position. I promise I won’t leave again. I can’t bear the thought of living without him.” Sasuke voice trembled. Sakura squeezed her arms tighter to comfort him.
“Sasuke…” A weak voice was heard from the bed. Sasuke and Sakura separated and looked at Naruto. He was sitting up and looking at the pair. Sasuke could see the tears in Naruto’s eyes. Without a second thought Naruto was in his arms. Sasuke pulled Naruto up and close to him. One hand cradled his head and the other around his waist. Naruto’s arms were around his neck.
“You’re alive, you’re really here!” Naruto cried happily into Sasuke’s embrace. Sasuke held Naruto even closer to him without hurting him.
“By Kami I promise Naruto I will never leave your side again.”
