Chapter 2
Within the Katabami Kinzan Village gold mines there have been reports of disturbances. Men going in but not coming back out. Identify the source and report. Should the source be malevolent—leave no traces of it.
Before he could roll the scroll back together, it combusted under the delayed timed release seal. Naruto smiled as he pushed off from the tree he had been sitting in. He had not been to the Katabami village in a long time. Nor had had he been to the curry shop in a long time either. He wondered how Karashi, Sansho, and Ranmaru were doing. Ranmaru...the kid had been so much like Haku. Sometimes Naruto would regret having had to kill Raiga but that dumbass had refused to listen to reason. If he had, what would Ranmaru and he be doing right now? Would they have continued to terrorize villagers or would they have been off living somewhere peaceful?Time fly’s so quickly.
Yes it does kit. A voice responded from within his mind.
Naruto laughed, Finally awake, huh?
Well, who wouldn’t wake up after feeling all the turmoil you're feeling?
Ah sorry about that.
Do not apologize. So…someone's after the Katabami people once again?
Yup. I wonder what it is this time. I mean with Ranmaru there I wonder...unless—
Unless he no longer resides in the village.
Yeah. But somehow I feel like he would not have left. Not after finding a home with Karashi and Sansho.
Well kit...Sometimes having a home isn't enough. I don't mean to upset you but sometimes you humans need more than just having a home.
No Kurama I understand but somehow I just—
Have a feeling?
Naruto laughed, Yup.
Well lets no waste time chit-chatting. You have a village to save.
No, WE have a village to save.
Oh shut up, Kurama yawned.
Naruto chuckled knowing that while Kurama was grumpy he meant no harm. Naruto marveled even now at how close that had gotten over the last few years. While Kurama had only seemed set on making Naruto's life hell, he had in fact been the one in hell. After the encounter with Tobi, Kurama had changed. He had begun to really pay attention to what Naruto would do. Whether it was on missions, trying to find Sasuke, or simply hanging out with his friends Kurama had been watching. Then the day had come when he had begun to talk with Naruto.
To say Naruto had been surprised would be an understatement. He had just finished having ramen with Sakura when Kurama had asked why he didn't ask her out anymore. Naruto had tried to explain that he just didn't see her that way anymore. Kurama, still confused, had said that he still had certain feelings about her though. Which of couse had made Naruto get all flustered while heading home. He had gotten more than a few stares that day.
It had almost taken the whole day to explain his love for Sakura to Kurama. Even though he couldn't see Kurama, he somehow sensed that he was still confused. He had been about to explain it a little more when Kurama surprised him yet again. He had said, more than asked that it was the same kind of love that Minato and Kushina had for Naruto. Shocked, Naruto had not known how to respond so Kurama had asked then. Naruto could only whisper a response of yes.
After his response Kurama had not asked anything else or spoke anymore. Well at least not until a week later after observing Naruto’s daily life. Somehow that one conversation opened up something between him and the bijuu. While it was awkward and shocking at first it wasn’t bad. Also it began to have its perks—especially when Naruto would go on missions and Kurama would point out something he missed. Also on missions he would point out if someone or something was hiding or if impending danger was headed his way. If someone would have asked him when he was a kid if he ever expected to get along with the nine-tails he would have laughed. Now it was actually Kurama himself who made Naruto laugh.
He stopped his musing just as he reached the clearing before the Curry Shop of Life. Kneeling on the tree branch he took in the curry shop’s appearance. Not only could he see some customers come and go from the shop, he could hear them from the inside of the shop. Naruto smiled, glad to see that the curry shop was doing well—especially seeing how it was already the late afternoon. Almost evening. The ground made a small crunching sound as he dropped from the tree’s limb.
For some reason as he stared at the doors, he was suddenly nervous about seeing Ranmaru. Known for not backing down he sucked in a deep breath and reached for one of the sliding doors. Before he could open it, the door was slid open and he was suddenly staring into shinning maroon eyes. He couldn’t help but stare at the grown up light purple haired kid he had met so long ago. Judging by the hair’s tail peeking out from behind his back he had let it grow. His bangs still framed his face, making his maroon eyes stand out all the more. He wore a white long sleeve apron, not doubt to protect him from the curry. Beneath his apron it looked like he wore the same blue shirt with a multicolored sash wrapped around his waist along with blue sandals. Well in bigger sizes of course.
Before he could move, Naruto was suddenly enwrapped in a warm embrace. He smiled and touched the shorter persons back with an open hand.
“Ranmaru.”
Ranmaru squeezed him before letting him go and taking a step back. He smiled at Naruto and moved aside from the entrance to let him pass. As he stepped inside the whole shop suddenly became still and quiet. Surprised by the sudden silence he looked around the shop and saw many familiar faces. Before he could even offer a greeting to everyone there was a unanimous shout.
“Naruto!”
He couldn’t help but rub the back of his head at the warm greeting and shyly waved hello to everyone. Ranmaru steered him towards the bar table that blocked the kitchen from the rest of the shop. Looking at him in shock with a dripping ladle in his hand was Karashi. He looked pretty much the same as before, only now his hair resembled the same hairstyle Sasuke had worn. Also he looked older, more like a man than the scarred wimpy kid he had once been. Suddenly he grinned at Naruto and went back to stirring the steaming pot of curry on the stove. Ranmaru sat quietly beside him at the bar table while Karashi continued to stir.
“Hey, where’s Sansho-san?” Naruto asked, when Karashi set a plate in front of him.
Karashi tensed, quickly looked from Ranmaru back to Naruto then went back to cooking. Frowning Naruto looked at Ranmaru, who was staring at Karashi’s back with a sad smile. Naruto’s eyes widended as he feared what their silence meant.
“She passed away a year ago, leaving the shop to me and Ranmaru. She said if we screwed up, she’d come back from the afterlife and haunt us.” Karashi spoke softly as he continued to stir.
“Somehow it seemed like she knew,” Ranmaru continued, glancing at Naruto. “Before she died, she started to train us vigorously about many different ways to make curry. As if we had to know it all in order to keep the shop alive.”
Naruto starred at the curry Karashi had served him. “I see,” was all he could think of to say. He cleared his throat and began to clear his plate. He wondered if Lee knew about Sansho’s death. While he didn’t want to be the one to inform Lee, he knew that it would hurt his friend more if he didn’t know.
“So I see that you haven’t screwed up so far,” Naruto said, smiling sadly while looking around. It was only when everyone laughed that he noticed that everyone in the shop had been listening to the conversation. Blushing he turned around and found Karashi smiling at him.
“No, we have yet to screw up. In fact it’s quite the opposite. However…” Karashi paused as he stared at Naruto for a second. “Naruto—”
“It’s the gold mine isn’t it?” Ranmaru interrupted and asked. The shop grew quiet again.
Naruto nodded and removed a small journal and pencil from within his orange and black jacket. He turned around on his stool and looked at everyone in the curry shop. All the patrons were men and at least some or most parts of their bodies were caked with dirt. So obviously the mining was still continuing even though someone had reported it as dangerous. He knew that they continued to mine because they needed to provide the village with funds. However the report had mentioned casualties and two deaths. How were they still mining without even more deaths and casualties? He frowned.
“Naruto,” Ranmaru said to get back his attention. Naruto looked back at him. “I’m the one who sent for help.”
Naruto’s eyes widened. “You did? But you have a—” Before Naruto finished he clamped his mouth shut at Ranmaru’s tense expression. Had he not told the villagers about his Kekkei Genkai?
“Ok you sent for help but are you the one who knows the most about it?”
“I have not physically been inside the mines but I was there to see the after math of the attacks.” Ranmaru’s emphasis on the not physically having been inside meant he had seen something with his Kekkei Genkai.
“Ok so who has seen firsthand this—whatever it is—and is still alive?” Naruto asked Ranmaru.
“Well that young man, would be Hachidai-san.” Answered a large older dark skinned man who was sitting at a table by one of the shop’s windows.
“Wait a minute.” Naruto dropped down from his stool and walked towards the man who had spoken. “Rokusuke-san?!”
Nodding, Rokusuke grinned at Naruto’s shocked expression. Gone was the scrawny and scared man from when Raiga had taken over the village.
“Yes Naruto. I’m Rokusuke. Anyway Hachidai-san was in the mines when the second attack occurred. However asking him about what happened may be impossible.” Seeing Naruto’s frown Rokusuke continued. “He’s traumatized and unable to talk about what happened in the mines. Even though there were more men who witnessed something, no one was as close to it as Hachidai-san. And those who were, are dead.”
“I see. But would any of you object to me still trying to speak to him. I just want to make sure I cover my bases…” Naruto paused when he noticed all the men looking at him like he was some sort of weird animal. “What?” He couldn’t help but ask.
“Well,” Rokusuke spoke up. “We’re just unused to shinobi who are respectful towards us gold miners. While we have had some dealings with shinobi before they were quite disrespectful. Of course that doesn’t include Konoha’s shinobi. Anyway we need your help, were willing to cooperate and follow your guidance for the sake of our village. All I ask is for you to be careful with Hachidai-san. He has not been the same since the second attack.”
Nodding, Naruto asked the men if they had any kind of experience with whatever was attacking them. Many did have some form of experience with whatever was in the gold mines. Apparently there also had been more than two attacks; the one Hachidai-san had been in was the most serious to occur thus far. Two men had died while Hachidai-san had luckily escaped. There was a consensus that they ‘felt’ the things presence before an attack occurred and that the attacks occurred during sundown. Due to the time of the attacks the men tried to work as much as they could during the day.
Naruto thanked the men for their help and Karashi for the curry. When he tried to pay Karashi shook his head and told him it was on the house. Hearing this all the men shouted in grievance for his special treatment. Laughing Naruto, shook his head and thanked Karashi. As he was turning he looked straight into Ranmaru's eyes for a split second. Hoping Ranmaru understood what he was silently saying, he headed outside. Not pausing, he walked into the woods to await Ranmaru.
Naruto's left eye twitched. Ranmaru had understood right? Natuto was pretty sure he had. And of course, it’s not like he couldn't locate Naruto. Thanks to his Kekkei Genkai he could find Naruto from a very great distance.
Wait a minute... Naruto's eye twitched again. He opened the door for me. He knew I was here. How long had he known? Damnit.
Grumbling, Naruto crossed his arms and leaned back against the tree. He stared at the curry shop from where he was sitting. It made sense if he thought about; why risk the men being curious about what Naruto and Ranmaru would discuss. Naruto got more comfortable in his sitting position to await the time the shop would close. Reaching inside his jacket he pulled out his journal to go over what he had learned from the men.
3 deaths. 10 casualties. 7 attacks; 2 most dangerous. 1 eye witness alive. Attacks occur at sundown. Attacks only occur if men near the back of the mines. Before an attack, there is an ominous presence. Causes men to grow tense and sometimes paralyzed with fear. Injures caused by trying to escape from mines. Large claw marks on mines walls and mining equipment. Large animal or perhaps demon residing in mines.
“But what is it and why is it in the mines?” Naruto asked himself as he put his journal away. He couldn’t understand why, whatever it was, would stay in the mine. Why wouldn’t it just leave while the men would not be at the mines? Looking away from the curry shop he stared at the gold mines mountains.
Unless it can’t leave… He turned back towards the curry shop when he felt Ranmaru heading towards him. He jumped drown from the tree he sat in and leaned against its bark.
“Sorry, didn’t want anyone asking questions.” Ranmaru spoke before Naruto could even see him.
“That’s alright I figured as much,” Naruto replied just as Ranmaru stepped into his line of sight.
Nodding, Ranmaru sighed and dropped down onto an old broken tree stump. Rubbing the back of his neck he looked up at Naruto and gave him a tired smile. Naruto knew that his being tired was not only because of the shop. Something about whatever was in those mines was tiring Ranmaru as well. Naruto just didn’t understand why. With his level of skill and power, Ranmau could get rid of what was in the mines himself. Nodding once again, Ranmaru begin to speak.
“Ever since I was taken in by the vilagers, Sansho-san and Karashi-kun, I’ve tried to help keep it peaceful here. I make sure to keep a watch over everyone with my sight. But sometimes with the curry shop so busy I don’t have the time. Well I suppose on one of those busy nights I missed seeing it enter the village and the mines.” He looked away from Naruto and stared towards the mines. “Just like the men described its presence can be ominous but it’s only when the men are in the mines. I make sure to check on its actions every night before I go to sleep and I have noticed something…”
To Naruto it looked as if Ranmaru was gathering his thoughts on how to continue. Naruto was only more anxious based on what he was hearing from Ranmaru. What in the world could disturb him in such a way? Especially when he had been partnered with one of the Mists legendary swordsman.
“I believe that whatever is in those mines is dangerous. It is dangerous because it is strong. Very strong. But what makes it even more dangerous Naruto,” Ranmaru looked straight into Naruto’s eyes. “Is that is wounded.”
“Wounded? Wounded from what?” Naruto could only ask in bewilderment. After all, if it was so dangerous what in the world could wound such a thing?
“Naruto, do you know what a Yokai is?” When Naruto shook his head Ranmaru continued. “Well Yokai are said to be magical spirits or demons. And the Yokai vary in their forms—some can inhabit inanimate objects, some like I said can be demons, or sometimes they can have animal forms.” Seeing Naruto’s confusion, Ranmaru decided to get to the point. “I believe what is in that cave is a yokai and it is not just any yokai. With my Kekkei Genkai I have seen a kitsune.”
Naruto could only stare at Ranmaru. Kurama?
I heard every word kit.
Seeing Ranmaru’s worried expression, Naruto decided now wasn’t the best time to have a chat is his head. “But how do you know it’s a ‘yokai’? Couldn’t it have just been a wounded fox?” Naruto asked hoping Ranmaru was wrong.
“Do you remember how I could sense your presence while inside of the pack on Raigas back?” Naruto nodded. “With my Kekkei Genkai I can both hear and see at a somewhat great distance. Also with it I can sense chakra signatures and if they change. Well the fox that is in that mine is no ordinary fox. It has an unbelievable amount of chakra. Its chakra is almost as great as yours is Naruto.”
Seeing no insincerity in Ranmaru’s expression Naruto had no other choice to believe him. But what worried him now was that Ranmaru may now know about Kurama. How much he wasn’t sure. Before he could speak Ranamru spoke again.
“Naruto I am your friend and I am indebted to you. Just because you are harbor a bijuu makes no difference to me.” Ranmaru smiled when he saw Naruto tense. “Yes I know because I can sense your chakra but also because I learned about you. Like the men said earlier, shinobi travel through here and they tell stories. Well at least the respectful ones do. And it is mainly through them that we have heard about your heroics. So don’t worry about how you may come off to us. As long as you are still the same caring and heroic shinobi we know that is all that matters. Ok?”
Naruto smiled and rubbed the back of his head. Now that he didn’t have to worry about how the people of Katabami would see him he remembered something.
“Wait if you know they’re ok with me being a jinchuuriki why hide?” Naruto asked.
“You mean why hide my Kekkei Genkai?” Naruto nodded. “Well to be quite blunt. And please don’t take this the wrong way but you don’t live here. I do. I scared people once with my abilities and I don’t wish to do that again. Not while I am so happy here. Not while I can stay with…” Ranmaru looked away from Naruto. “Not while I can stay with Karashi.”
Naruto’s eyes widened. Oh. “But Karashi already knows about your abilities.”
“Yes he does but the Katabami people don’t. If they were to fear it they may drive me out. Or worse Karashi could get hurt if he were to defend me. And before you ask I have spoken about this with him as well. While he has more or less the same opinion as you I still disagree.”
“But what if the time comes where you will have no choice but to use your ability in front of the villagers?”
“Then I will worry about it then.” Ranmaru spoke with finality.
Naruto nodded not wanting to upset Ranmaru further. He couldn’t blame him for his secrecy. Having lived through such experiences when he was younger he understood the fear. Of course Ranmaru’s fear was more for Karashi’s sake than his own. Naruto pulled out his journal once again to quickly jot down all that Ranmaru had told him. Once he was alone he would talk with Kurama about the possible kitsune trapped in the mines.
“Alright then I’m gonna stay here for a little while longer. But I wanted to ask you guys, you and Karashi that is, if I could—”
“Of course you can stay at the curry shop. Are you kidding? If Sansho-san were alive she’d hit you with her ladle just for thinking of asking.” Ranmaru said, interrupting Naruto before he could even ask.
“Thank you,” Naruto laughed.
“Right. Well I’ll leave the back door unlocked for you. You can sleep in the shop like you and the others did when you were last here. Or you could take Sansho-san’s old room. It’s up to you, I’m sure Karashi wouldn’t mind.” Ranmaru said before heading back to the curry shop.
Naruto watched as Ranmaru headed back to the curry shop, where he saw Karashi had been waiting.
Karashi and Ranmaru, huh.
Being a hypocrite now are you?
Naruto laughed. Well that didn’t take long. And what do you mean, hypocrite? I am in no way disapproving.
Well I suppose you wouldn’t be now would you? I wonder how many more of the friends you make are going to turn out like their own sex.
Now what they hell is that supposed to mean?! Naruto thought almost stumbling from the tree limb he just landed on.
Think about it, kit. A good majority of your friends have a partner of the same sex. I do believe you are giving of some sort of odd pheromones.
Oh now you’re just being crazy. And why the hell would I be the one to be doing it?
Oh right. I mean you and your pink haired friend are the ones giving off pheromones.
Now you’re just being mean. Naruto pouted while crossing his arms.
Kurama laughed. Well if not pheromones, they you both started some new type of movement.
We did not start a ‘movement’. Could we get to the real issue here, please!
Right, right. He believes he has discovered a yokai kitsune. While I don’t think he’s jumping to conclusions I do wonder.
Why is that?
Well the last time I came across a yokai was before I was first sealed. And that was a long time ago.
But they do exist?
How do you find their existence strange when you are having a conversation with me at just this moment?
Oh. Right. But you’re not a yokai, you’re a Bijuu. Which means you’re stronger. Right?
No I am not a yokai and yes I am a Bijuu. Which does mean I am stronger, way stronger. Which it turns means you are as well. But for a yokai to have entered a village while wounded is a mystery in itself.
Why?
Well yokai, any kind really, are careful not to be near anything while wounded. For it to be here means it was wounded quite gravelly. And for something to be able to do that makes me worry. That is of course depending on the yokai’s power.
Ranmaru also said it was a fox, a kitsune. Does that make any difference, when compared to other yokai?
Yes and no. I say this because not every yokai is the same. The way they are resembles the way you humans’ shinobi villages are set up. While you are all shinobi, you have different abilities, different ideas, and different experiences. The same could be said of the yokai. This kitsune could resemble the same characteristics of a normal fox or it could have a much greater intelligence. This could be a good or bad thing. Should it resemble a regular fox it could just be defensive when approached. However if like this it will be harder to reason with. That is to say if it has a much greater intelligence we could possibly reason with it. However, again the problem could be that its experiences with humans may have led it to feel humans are despicable creatures.
You mean just like you? Naruto couldn’t help but ask.
No. Not exactly. While it is true I was mistreated by humans and even wanted to kill every last one. It is not so much that way now. Having been with you Naruto I have come to see the world in a much different way. Humans can be despicable creatures. But they can also be beautiful, they can do great things. I have seen that to judge every human as despicable based on a few humans bad deeds would be… Well it would make me a despicable as well. You Naruto, are one of those rare humans, who has the special gift of reaching out and making villains turn away from villainy.
Naruto couldn’t respond. He was so overwhelmed by not only Kurama’s change of view but his view of Naruto himself. Even though he couldn’t respond he was pretty sure Kurama could feel the impact his words had on the blond shinobi. Naruto felt Kurama’s presence grow for a quick second before he felt himself suddenly engulfed in warmth. Naruto smiled and relaxed against the trees trunk. Naruto thought of responding to the way in which their conversation had headed but decided against it. Kurama understood so he wouldn’t ruin it.
Okay so what would be the best way to respond if the kistune is one or the other?
Well if it is more animal it would be best to go after it ask it sleeps. This way we can catch it off guard and none of the miners will be present. Especially if I may need to help you. Now should it be more intelligent that animalistic, I still think we should go when none of the miners are there. I fear what they may do when they notice this fox is different.
Wait how would they know it is different? Will it have more than one tail like you?
Exactly. Depending on its age it may have more than one tail. Kitsune’s usually grow an additional tail every one-hundred years. I hope we can reason with it, I have not come across another kitsune for quite some time.
For Kurama’s sake Naruto really hoped for that too. How sad it would be to have to kill such a creature. While Naruto knew that Kurama wouldn’t hold it against him, Naruto knew he would regret it for the rest of his life. He may be a shinobi but he always tried his best to never kill in order to save lives.
Alright well I’m gonna catch as much sleep as I can. I need to go see Hachidai-san tomorrow.
Right. Remember to be careful when you question him. No need to upset him further. Naruto if it is a yokai kistune and it is reasonable, what do plan to do?
I need to make sure no one else beside you, Ranmaru, and I know about this. So I’m going to have to figure out where it came from and if it can go back.
And should the kitsune be unable to return?
Well Kurama, I’m gonna have to figure that out when that happens. But I swear on my ninja way, I am going to keep the kitsune and the Katabami people safe.
Kurama laughed. Of course. Good night, kit.
Right. Naruto jumped from the tree once again and headed for the curry shop. Just as Ranamru had said, the back door was unlocked as he pulled it open. After he made sure to lock it he headed further inside the curry shop. On top of the bar table was a note for him. It stated that if he wanted to sleep in the shop there was a tatami mat in the room beside the kitchen. Should he like to sleep in Sansho-san’s room, he just needed to head up the stairs that he had apparently passed. Deciding he’d rather not take the chance of disturbing Ranamaru and Karashi’s daily schedule, he opted for the bedroom.
As he headed up the stair he tried his best not to make a sound, only to discover Ranmaru waiting at the top. He sighed at Ranmaru’s amused expression and followed him to Sansho-san’s room. Thanking Ranmaru he headed inside for much needed sleep. He had been traveling nonstop to get his mission done as soon as possible before his birthday came. So far the way things were looking, either he was going to arrive in Suna on the day of his birthday or not make it until after. He yawned.
Sasuke. He thought, just before sleep took him.
