Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto nor do I make any money from this! |
Naruto sighed as he once again got Neji’s voicemail. Tonight was their date night that the other had promised him since their anniversary had been interrupted two weeks ago. It was already an hour to opening curtain and Naruto was feeling nervous. Neji would have called him and told him if he was running late, but he had yet to do so. It made him think that he was stuck in yet another business meeting and probably didn’t know what time it was.
Determined to get ahold of his boyfriend, Naruto called the secretary. The phone rung several times before the woman picked up and answered in her normal bored tone. But it soon perked up as soon as she realized who it was.
“Naruto! We haven’t heard your sweet voice in awhile! When are you going to come visit us?” Her voice was smooth and not as irritating as others he could think of.
“I don’t know when I can,” he answered chuckling. “But hey, is Neji around?”
“I’m sorry, hon, he’s out on a dinner meeting. I know how things have been lately, but he’s working so hard to close this deal.” The secretary said, her voice sympathetic. “Is there something you needed?”
Naruto sighed, it wouldn’t matter if he left a message. Neji wouldn’t receive it in time for him to make the showing. He thanked the woman for her time and hung up. He didn’t know what to do now. He had fought to have this night off so he could go to the opening of Romeo and Juliet.
He resigned himself to going alone and wasting a ticket. It took everything he had from throwing something across the room. Instead he grabbed the pillow from the couch and screamed his frustration into it. He had spent a considerable amount of money on these tickets since the actors were world renowned.
His phone chose that moment to ring and he quickly picked it up, hoping that it was his boyfriend calling. But the picture on the screen wasn’t Neji and Naruto’s heart dropped. He had hoped that things were going to get better, but it seemed that they weren’t going to.
It was Sasuke on the other end, normally the other man never called him, it was always Naruto calling him. But he wouldn’t dismiss the call just because of that, he hit the accept button and greeted his friend cheerily, though his tone was false.
“Hey, bastard, what’s up?” Naruto said as he flopped back on the couch and looked up at the ceiling.
“Hn, moron. I told you not to call me that,” was the deadpanned response. Naruto could almost see his friend’s expression in his head.
“Yar, yar. I know. So what’s up?”
“Heh, not much really. Shikamaru and I just had dinner, but he was called away for that damn deal again.” Sasuke muttered as Naruto heard something clang in the background.
“At least you got dinner!” Naruto groaned as he rolled to his stomach, his feet going into the air. “We were ‘pose to go a show tonight! My only night off and I get blown off without a phone call!”
“Heh, so I guess I win our little game today then.” Naruto could practically see the smirk on the other’s lips.
“You’ll get your money when I see you,” he grumbled, hating the fact that Sasuke had won their bet today. In fact, Sasuke was in the lead.
They had started their bet about two weeks ago while they were watching a movie. They had been bored with the film and decided to start a game. Every time that they were dropped for work, both had to put money in a jar. At the end of the week, the person who didn’t have their plans cancelled the most, won.
And this week, Sasuke had won. Shikamaru had only left one time this week, while Neji had left at least four. Naruto had been sour about the whole thing and hadn’t called Sasuke in a few days. It was probably the reason the other man was calling him now.
“Well that’s nice to know, but I know you paid a hefty price for those tickets. Are you going alone?” Sasuke asked, curiosity filling his tone.
“Thought about skipping the whole damn thing,” Naruto muttered, frowning.
“Ah, I’m surprised you didn’t ask me to go,” Sasuke mused.
“Well, I figured you’d be busy,” Naruto snapped, not keeping his anger in check. He was just so frustrated at Neji that he had been taking it out on others lately. Kiba had stopped coming over for their usual game night because of Naruto’s fiery temper.
“Hey, don’t be an ass! Just because you’re not getting paid attention to, doesn’t mean you have to be rude!” Sasuke scolded, his voice burned like lava and Naruto couldn’t help the shame that washed over him.
“Whatever, bastard. So are you interested or not?” Naruto asked annoyed at himself for jumping on his friend like that, Sasuke wouldn’t get an apologize, he was too proud for that.
“I guess I’ll go with your sorry ass, I’ll be pretty bored anyway.” Sasuke’s tone made it sound like getting ready to do a chore instead of having some fun.
“Well gee thanks, Sasuke.” Naruto said sourly as he scrunched his face up.
“Well, what else are we going to do? I know you spent quite a bit on those tickets.”
“Just pick me up by seven, asshole.”
“What? No dinner? You wound me, Naruto.”
“Whatever, just be here at seven.”
“Fine, no need to grouch.”
Naruto hung up on Sasuke, knowing that would irk the Uchiha further. He only hoped that his mood would improve after a nice hot shower. For some odd reason, hot water always relaxed and melted away any bad mood he had. There had been times he had to shower fives times a day just to get of multiple moods. Neji thought he was crazy, but hardly ever said anything. It wasn’t as if they didn’t have limited hot water.
Thirty minutes later, Naruto stepped out of the shower. His mood had improved and he couldn’t help the smile that plastered itself to his face. He would see Neji in a few days, he knew that and it would be okay. The other man had really been trying for the last week to be there for Naruto and that’s all he cared about.
He had pulled his boxers on as the doorbell rang. He knew that it could only be one person, Sasuke. So he headed to the door, not ashamed of answering the door in his boxers. More than once, being in his boxers had saved him from long boring conversations with his neighbors or the occasional Jehovah's witness.
He opened the door and Sasuke was dressed in a suit. Naruto had to admit the other looked in the dark charcoal clothes. He let the other man in and proceeded to go back to his room to finish getting ready, making sure to be done as quickly as possible.
He stepped out of his room only to have Sasuke laugh at him. Naruto narrowed his eyes and punched the other man in the shoulder. He knew that Sasuke was laughing at his black suit and the bright orange tie that stood out against the other color. But Naruto couldn’t help it, he liked the color orange and was always wearing some sort of orange accessory.
“C’mon bastard, let’s get this over with,” Naruto grumbled as he grabbed his keys and wallet off the table and left the apartment.
--
People filed out of the theatre while Naruto and Sasuke stayed in their seats. The room was half empty as both men stood, the muscles in their legs stretching. Neither said a word as they moved out of their aisle, ready to leave.
“NARUTO!” Was yelled across the theatre as a black blur attached itself to the unsuspecting man.
Naruto stumbled backwards as he caught the person, Sasuke steadying him from behind as he regained his balance. Once he was steady on his feet, he placed the attacker down and smiled, happy to see his friend, Haku.
“Hey!” He greeted lamely, he hadn’t seen nor talked to the other man in months and was happy to have run into him. He felt bad for not keeping in touch, but they led artist lives and sometimes you didn’t a free moment to yourself.
“Hey? Hey? That doesn’t cut it buster!” Haku said with spunk. “It’s been forever since you texted or called me up! I bet you didn’t even know I was in this play!”
Naruto smiled as he held hands up in defeat, arguing with Haku was pointless since the shorter man was very stubborn, even more than Naruto himself. Haku smiled as his gaze turned towards Sasuke and noticed the sour expression.
“Did you get a new boy toy?” He asked curiously. “Cause you two together, look absolutely stunning!”
Naruto’s face went red as Sasuke choked on air at Haku’s comment. The cellist couldn’t believe his friend had been so straightforward, he wanted to hide and not face the next few minutes. He protested harshly at the seemingly innocent comment, making Haku’s eyes narrow in suspicion.
“No, it’s not like that! Sasuke is just a friend! I’m still with Neji!” Naruto all but yelled waving his hands in front of him comically, not noticing Sasuke snickering behind him.
“Really? How sad, you two are just sooo stunning!” Haku said, grinning wildly. “And why did you pay for a ticket? I could have gotten you one for free!”
“It feels like I’m stealing!” Naruto answered, happy that the subject had been derailed from him and Sasuke in the context of a relationship, it felt weird and he didn’t want to focus on that. Sasuke was his friend, nothing more, nothing less.
“But it’s not! I know you like to think that we get paid by the amount of tickets we sell, but that’s not how it works!” Haku scowled as he punched Naruto on the arm. “Just let me treat you one time, maybe you can bring Neji next time!”
“Fine,” Naruto grumbled, crossing his arms. He wasn’t happy with the situation but nothing could be done about it. “Hopefully I can wrangle Neji into it. He’s been busy lately closing some insane deal.”
“Well hopefully he won’t miss your recital, I already have the tickets,” Haku grinned as he brandished the pieces of paper.
“Haku!” Naruto exclaimed as he took in the sight of the tickets. “You could have gotten them for free!”
“Do you see my point now?” The younger man asked with a raised eyebrow as Naruto nodded. “Good, now Zabuza and I will be taking you and Neji out to dinner since it’s been forever!”
“Fine! We’ve gotta jet, the bastard is getting impatient,” Naruto said, noticing Sasuke glancing at his watch every few seconds.
“Sure! We’ll see you soon!” Haku said as he hugged Naruto and bounced off.
Naruto couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face at his friend's antics. It had certainly been a long time since he had last seen Haku and it felt wonderful to just be in the cheerful presence of his long time friend. He turned to Sasuke, the silly smile still plastered on his face.
“That was Haku, he’s been my friend for ten years now,” Naruto answered his friends questioning glance. As they left the building, the two men chattered about the play and the actors. The night air was warm and that caused more people to be out and about, the nightlife of the town swelling more than usual and leaving everyone with a high.
Even though the sidewalk was crowded, the two men had managed to stay side by side. Their conversation, like before, was getting heated as they continued to discuss the play and commented on the different aspects, never noticing how close they actually were.
By the time they reached Naruto’s apartment, the argument had died down and they were taking cheap shots at one another. Naruto unlocked the door to his apartment and stepped inside, inviting Sasuke in.
“We might as well as have a snack,” Naruto explained as he toed his shoes off, not noticing that the lights were on in his apartment.
“Heh, moron, I don’t think a snack is in your future,” Sasuke retorted with a wide smirk as he watched Neji approach the other man from behind.
“The hell you mean? I have all kinds of things stored up-” Naruto was cut off by a pair of arm circling around his waist.
“I see you’ve bought a friend home,” a smooth, familiar voice purred in his ear and Naruto relaxed, but didn’t lean into the embrace like he would have a long time ago.
“Uh, yeah. I thought you were working til late so I took Sasuke to the play,” Naruto answered as he turned around in the strong arms and looked up to Neji.
“I was able to get out, but unfortunately I had to miss attending the play with you,” Neji apologized, placing a kiss on Naruto’s forehead.
“Thank you for going with him,” Neji directed towards Sasuke, no hint of jealousy in his tone. “I’m appreciative that you keep him company while I’m gone.”
“It’s no problem when the moron isn’t being annoying,” Sasuke answered, sending Naruto a sadistic smile. “He’s quite the handful at times.”
“I’m aware of that, I try to keep him occupied, but sometimes the task is too great.” Neji nuzzled the side of Naruto’s head affectionately as if he were apologizing.
“Hey! I’m right here ya know!” Naruto protested as he turned around in Neji’s and gave him a petulant stare.
“Sure, moron.” Sasuke quipped as he turned to the door. “Since Neji’s here, I’m going to head home.”
Naruto watched as his friend left the apartment, somewhat disappointed that they didn’t get to have a snack together and play video games. He shook the feeling away and turned to Neji, smiling. It was a nice surprise to come home to and it showed him that at least his boyfriend was willing to try to fix their broken relationship, even if he was unaware that it was slowly unraveling.
“I have dinner waiting on us, Naruto.” Neji said as he led his boyfriend to the candlelit kitchen.
Blue eyes widened as Naruto noticed his favorite dishes, with the exception of ramen, was laid on the table. He turned to Neji with a smile on his face and hugged him, putting his head under Neji’s chin. Maybe, just maybe they could make it.
--
Naruto was practicing his solo in the sanctity of his apartment. The night before, the maestro (who he swore was the devil), had decided that Naruto would have his own solo during the concert. He had been practicing night and day since the announcement, only taking breaks to piss and eat. Neji was going to be attending and he just had to perform his best.
The great thing about his solo was that it could be an original piece. Naruto had pulled out an old song he had written in college and began to rework the notes into something he had considered his masterpiece. Naruto hadn’t seen Neji in days and talked to Sasuke even less, it was as if he were the only person existing in the world, he was so immersed in his work.
It wasn’t that he was trying to ignore his friend, but he needed this performance to go perfectly. He planned on retiring after this concert at the age of twenty-six. Neji wouldn’t like it, but Naruto felt that it was long past time that he began teaching others his art. He had always wanted to be a teacher, but after his talent was discovered, Naruto was pushed into a life of music and concerts. While he enjoyed them, he just wanted a simple life with his partner.
Placing his bow on the table beside him, he stood and stretched. It had been hours since he had sat down and began to rehearse, and to say he was hungry was an understatement. He padded out to the kitchen and began making himself a simple lunch. As Naruto put the finishing touches on his food, his cell rang. Startled his put his sandwich down and stared at the name flashing across the screen. Sasuke never called this early in the afternoon since it was around the time he took Shikamaru his lunch.
Picking the phone up, he answered it like normal. “Hey, bastard. What’s up?”
“Shikamaru broke up with me,” the words were strung together and almost indecipherable and Naruto had to think for a few minutes before the words clicked.
“The hell? Do you need me to come down? Neji isn’t coming home tonight as far as I know.” Naruto offered as he picked up his plate and entered the spacious living room, plopping down on the posh couch.
“I’m already at your door, moron.” Sasuke huffed as Naruto heard a resounding knock through the phone now. Naruto chuckled as he hung up his phone and made his way to the door, his bare feet making soft sounds on the tiled floor.
Sasuke was standing there, a small smile gracing his lips as Naruto stepped aside and let him into the apartment. No words were said as they made their way to the living room, Naruto picking up his plate as he sat down.
It silent for a bit, both men just sitting there, Sasuke staring at the floor as Naruto ate. The blond didn’t quite know what to say to the other man. Naruto’s mind burned with questions and he wasn’t sure if his friend was ready to answer them just yet. Finishing off his sandwich, Naruto set on the coffee table as he curled his feet under his body and turned the T.V. on.
There was a documentary on, but Naruto couldn’t pay attention. He was hyper aware of his friend beside and was wondering when the other man was going to say something. Sasuke wasn’t one who expressed his feelings well, something that Naruto had learned in the time he came to know Sasuke.
“He’s moving to China,” the whisper was barely heard and Naruto turned his head to Sasuke, just to make sure the other man had spoken.
“China? Why?” Naruto asked as he shifted his body so that he was facing Sasuke.
“He said that he didn’t want me to go with him, that I already had a life here and a good artist's reputation. It’d just be easier.” Sasuke stated, eyes moving up to meet Naruto’s.
“But I thought you guys were doing well,” Naruto mumbled as he adjusted his body and brought his legs in close to his body.
“I thought so too, but if they want this deal to go through someone needed to move. Shikamaru doesn’t really have ties here while Neji has his clan, it would have been easier. And he didn’t want to drag me with him. It’s not the fact that he’s leaving, it’s just he waited so long to tell me,” Sasuke answered, leveling Naruto with a passive gaze.
“Well, if you need a place crash sometimes, we have a spare room. Kiba is always staying there, so Neji shouldn’t mind,” Naruto said smiling as he hopped off the couch.
“That’s good to know, moron. How are you two lately?” Sasuke asked curiously, he knew that things had improved since the play incident, but not by much.
“It’s going I suppose,” Naruto shrugged his shoulders, face scrunched a little as he thought. “I mean, it’s not as bad as before, but I still feel that he’s still preoccupied with that damn deal.”
“Shikamaru says that once he moves to China, it should be about closed,” Sasuke said and raised an eyebrow at Naruto’s confused expression. “We’re still on speaking terms, we’re both adults, moron.”
“Oh, right. It wasn’t that, but anyways, what do you want to do tonight?” The question was asked as Naruto picked up his plate and padded to the kitchen, Sasuke following behind him.
“The same old, I guess. Just watch some old movies and gossip like old women?” Sasuke joked as he swiped a bottle of water from the fridge, the two men falling into their normal routine unconsciously.
