Sorry it’s taken this long to update, but it’s almost finished. Part two reached eleven pages, so I decided to split it into two parts. So here’s the second part, and the epilogue will be after that, which is almost finished. Until then, enjoy this part! Unbeta'd and all mistakes are my own. A Fool’s Holiday Part Two She turned the post-it note over and over in her hand, feeling the sticky side with the tips of her fingers. Sakura had only just given the red head her number a day ago, and although it was late, Karin really wanted to call her. Trembling slightly, she picked up her house phone and punched in the unfamiliar number, but she didn’t hit talk. She didn’t even know what to say. “You can do this, Karin.” She told herself firmly, hitting the talk button on the phone and bringing it to her ear. After five rings, the voicemail picked up, urging her to leave a message. Karin hung up before she could hear the beep. “Guess she’s busy.” The red head sighed, placing the phone back down in its base. She dragged herself over to the couch and collapsed into its lumpy cushions, her body heavy. Maybe it was a good thing that Sakura hadn’t answered. Karin was tired and she didn’t trust her brain not to make her say something stupid. She’d already made a fool out of herself last night at the bar because of Suigetsu. The bastard had teased her about it all day at work today. Karin rolled onto her side and reached for the remote on the floor, and lifted it slightly to turn the television on. She flipped through the channels aimlessly, stopping briefly on Nova before continuing. She settled on an infomercial about kitchenware on QVC and curled herself into a ball, pulling the quilt down from the back of the couch and over her body. She was asleep within minutes, to the sound of the people on TV bragging about how sharp their knives were. *~* Karin tried calling the bartender again a few days later during her lunch break, outside in the cold where no one could eavesdrop. She shivered as she punched in the familiar numbers, pressed talk, and brought the phone to her ear. Just like that first time, it went straight to voicemail, but she decided to leave a message just so Sakura knew that she had called. She left her name and a number where she could be reached and hung up the phone, feeling just a little disappointed. She tossed the phone onto the kitchen table and sunk into a chair, her fingers going into her hair. Calm down, Karin, you idiot she told herself, snorting into her hands as they brushed over her face. She was acting like she was already borderline obsessed with the poor bartender. Karin got up from the table and went over to her fridge, pulling it open and grabbing a beer from the shelf. She twisted the cap off and took a sip, her eyes trailing over the things in her living room. It looked relatively empty and unlived in, because she was rarely home thanks to long hours at work. It looked incredibly lonely. She had just decided to go to bed when the phone rang; startling her so much she almost dropped her beer. The speaker on the wall rattled off numbers she was only vaguely familiar with and her heart leapt into her throat. She grabbed it off the wall and pressed talk. “Hello?” she said meekly. There was so much sound coming from the other line that she couldn’t hear what the other person was saying. “Hey, sweetheart.” A feminine voice said over the sound of the music in the background, happy and just the slightest bit slurred. Karin furrowed her eyebrows and switched the phone to her other hand. “Oh, this is Sakura, from the bar? I just got your voicemail and wanted to call you and apologize!” “No, it’s alright – “ Karin started. “Are you busy right now?” The woman cut her off, giggling a little through the line. It sounded so cute and it made Karin blush. “I’m just about to get off work and I’d like to take you out for coffee.” Karin opened her mouth to decline, but she looked around her apartment and snapped her mouth shut. She’d been thinking about the woman all day and there was no way she was going to turn this down. “Sure. Where do you want to meet?” Karin asked as she wandered into her bedroom to find something nice to wear. She switched ears again as she fumbled around in her dresser for that sexy pair of lace panties she never got to show off. Hey, a girl could dream, right? “There’s a coffee shop down the street from the bar. It’s not open but I know the guy who owns it.” Sakura chirped. Karin smiled to herself as she pulled off her pajama pants and not-as-sexy boy shorts and slipped the lacy stuff on. “I can do that. I only live fifteen minutes from the bar.” The red head offered, moving to her closet next to find something comfortable yet showy to wear on her coffee date. She’d decided on a pair of form-fitting jeans with a pale pink button up top. “Okay, sounds good! I’ll meet you there.” Sakura told her. They shared a quick goodbye and Karin hung up. She stared down at her outfit with a satisfied look, and went into the bathroom to put on a little make-up. *~* When Karin reached the cafe, Sakura was standing in the front with a man that had long, black hair. He smiled at her kindly as he went to unlock the door and waved them inside. “I trust you two not to mess up my shop.” The man said, his voice silky and cold at the same time. Sakura nodded happily and stood on her toes to kiss the man on the cheek before he disappeared up the stairs near the back of the shop. Karin shed her jacket and followed Sakura to the counter, where she draped it over the back of one of the chairs and sat down. The pink haired woman slipped behind the counter and started making the two of them some coffee. “You work here, too, don’t you?” Karin asked, fidgeting nervously as she watched her crush pull creams and packets of something unidentifiable from beneath the counter. She was so efficient about it, that Karin thought she must work here when she isn’t at the bar. Sakura smiled at her and flicked a piece of pink hair out of her eyes. “I only help out from time to time. He’s got a new baby so he can’t here all the time.” She shrugged. Sakura filled the two cups with sweet smelling coffee and slid one of them over to Karin. She brought the cup to her lips and took a sip, almost moaning in appreciation. “It’s good.” The red heard offered meekly as she smiled at the other woman over the rim of her cup. Steam rose up from the hot coffee and fogged up her glasses, making Sakura giggle. Karin smiled at her from across the table and reached up to take her glasses off so she could clean them. The lights in the café were dimmed to the lowest setting and without her glasses, Karin couldn’t see a thing. She cleaned them quickly and slipped them on, only to gasp in surprise at how close Sakura had gotten. She had come around to the other side of the counter and was now sitting next to her. This close up, Karin could see just how green the other woman’s eyes were. “You’re so pretty, Karin.” Sakura whispered, reaching a hand out to run through her hair, fingers catching on some of the more tangled strands. The bartender smiled shyly at her and tilted her head. “Why would a girl like you be alone on Valentine’s Day?” Karin blushed and took a sip of her coffee. She knew all too well the answer to that question and it was obvious that other people felt the same way most of the time. “No one seems to click.” She shrugged nonchalantly, letting her eyes brush over the rest of Sakura’s face – her unblemished skin, cheekbones, and pink lips. She was incredibly pale, but Karin liked that about her. Sakura nodded and pulled her hand back, only to slide her fingers around the rim of her cup as she thought over Karin’s answer. Her eyes never left the red head’s face. She sighed suddenly and got up from the table, leaving her coffee at the counter and walking behind the counter where a small stereo system was set up. She pressed a few buttons and Lady Gaga started filtering in through the speakers in the corners of the café. Sakura was smiling when she came back behind the counter and offered Karin one of her hands. “Valentine’s Day might be over but I can still ask for a dance, right?” she teased lightly, grabbing onto the other woman’s arm and hauling her up and off the stool. Karin stumbled lightly and fell into her, causing both of them to blush lightly. “Sorry.” Sakura giggled. “Sometimes I don’t know my own strength.” A pair of small hands came to rest on her hips and Karin sighed a little as she let hers rest on Sakura’s shoulders. “Lady Gaga isn’t really something you’d slow dance to, is it?” Sakura said after a minute, frowning over at the stereo behind them. She stepped back and suddenly spun Karin around before tugging her back into a tight embrace. As the lyrics to You and I played around them, Karin felt herself relax more and more into Sakura’s warm body. It felt so nice to be held like that after pining for so long. She couldn’t even begin to fathom how a woman as nice and pretty would be into someone like her – rough and vulgar. Except right now she was feeling more like a schoolgirl with a crush on her teacher than her big, bad self. “It doesn’t matter what we’re dancing to.” Karin mumbled, tightening her arms around the other women’s neck and nuzzling her nose into Sakura’s skin. She felt a full-body shiver go through the bartender and Karin smirked to herself. “Karin-chan, you tease.” Sakura giggled, before pulling back and pressing their lips together firmly as Lady Gaga crooned out the words, Baby, it’s you and I. tbcWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
