Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto! I make no money! Got it? |
He stared at his cell phone for a long time, willing himself to make the call. It was early, ridiculously so, but he hoped that since Naruto normally started work early that the other man would be up by now, too, even if it was a Saturday, too. Though he somehow doubted it. He certainly didn’t get out of bed before, oh, noon, unless he had a good reason.
Like a particular loud blond that he was fascinated by. And had been fascinated by for the last three and a half months.
He’d first seen Naruto at Starbucks at the end of the last semester, right before classes had let out for the summer. He’d stopped in for coffee, even though he didn’t drink it a lot, but he had finals to study for, so he’d decided he needed something to help him get through. Then, since the wireless internet had still been pay, he’d stayed, knowing he wouldn’t get sidetracked by his usual distractions. His grades had sucked and he’d desperately needed good scores on his finals.
So he’d stayed and studied. And watched Naruto work. He hadn’t really gotten much studying done that day, after all. He’d been too fascinated by the incredibly bright blue eyes, the quick smile that had been given anyone that approached and the way Naruto had laughed. He was loud and fun and everything that had ever attracted Kiba.
It didn’t hurt that the man was gorgeous. Obviously fit under the outrageously orange snug t-shirts Naruto wore, his body definitely drew the eye. It took Kiba quite a few visits to Starbucks - and a newly acquired appreciation for coffee - to figure out that Naruto didn’t return the smiles from the girls that looked at him. That, instead, he’d been more ready to respond to the few guys who’d tried to flirt, for which Kiba had damned near dropped to his knees right then and there in thanks.
Not that he did anything with anyone, that Kiba could tell. He gently rebuffed any advances that anyone made and it wasn’t until he’d heard Naruto turn someone down that he understood why. He’d been asked out to dinner and Naruto had looked genuinely upset about saying no. He’d mumbled something about concentrating on his studies, that school was pretty hard for him and he couldn't afford distractions.
That hadn’t dissuaded Kiba one bit, like it had the guy at the coffee shop. Kiba had done a bit of detective work and discovered that he and Naruto had similar majors. Both in technology, he’d still been taking a general IT path while Naruto had been Network Administration. Since Kiba hadn’t decided which path he’d wanted to take yet, it was a simple matter of hanging out at the right time to find out what Naruto was taking for the semester. And from there, it was even simpler to be in the same class.
It was a little creepy and stalker-ish, but Kiba decided he just wouldn’t think too much about that part if it meant he could spend time with Naruto. He figured that if they were in the same class, he’d have an excuse to hang out without it being a date. Studying with each other meant that Naruto didn’t mess up his classes and they could still be together. He just hadn’t figured out quite yet how to ask Naruto to study.
And then this fell into his lap and Kiba had jumped at the opportunity. Roommates could -- if they wanted to -- spend a lot of time together. Again, without compromising studies and he was hoping that Naruto would want to and be different than his other attempts at sharing the apartment. That they’d get along, and maybe more, and do stuff.
He looked down at Akamaru now and sighed. His companion was looking up at him with the perfect, "What are you waiting for, dork," expression and Kiba nodded. "You’re right," he muttered and, with another deep breath, he started dialing.
It was answered on the second ring by a very cheerful voice and Kiba was relieved he hadn’t awakened Naruto. "Hello!"
Kiba felt some of the butterflies in his stomach settle. "Hey, uh, it’s Kiba. Um, Hana’s on her way into town; she’ll be here in a bit and I wondered when you wanted us over there..."
"Great!" Naruto said and Kiba’s eyebrows went up. He seemed much more... cheerful... open somehow than he’d been.
Kiba wasn’t a fool. He’d noticed the way Naruto had been around him, knew that something about him set the blond off and he’d been banging his head against the wall, trying to figure out what it was. The best he could come up with was that it was just something inherent about him, which hadn’t made things hopeful at all.
But that initial irritation at him seemed to have faded, since they made plans for Naruto to move in. It still wasn’t exactly friendly and hardly anything more, but at least he didn’t seem so annoyed anymore. Kiba took the change happily and just went with it.
"So... I figure she’ll be here in a bit. Her dogs are with her, but she’ll leave ‘em here with Akamaru. She’s got an Outback, is that big enough?"
Naruto made a noise into the phone that Kiba had figured out meant that Naruto was thinking. "Yeah, I think so. I don’t have any furniture, except for a small desk and chair. I meant to ask, do you, uh, have a bed? This place was furnished..."
"Yeah, there’s a single in the bedroom that’s yours. Not much else, but we can figure something out, if we need to."
"Cool. Okay, well, let me give you directions, then I guess I’ll see you soon," Naruto replied and it took everything Kiba had to not outright cheer. He wrote down the instructions to find Naruto’s apartment; it was one thing he’d firmly drawn the line at, stalking Naruto to his home. Then he’d said good-bye and hung up.
He really didn’t have a lot. Kiba grinned at the Playstation 3 and the computer Naruto had, glad that his new roommate was as geeky as he was, at least about that sort of thing. A few boxes of books and stuff, a few suitcases of clothes, linens and a couple of boxes of household items. There’d been the two pieces of furniture - his desk and chair, but that was it. There’d actually been room to spare in the car. Kiba almost felt sorry for Naruto. If the sum of his own belongings didn’t also amount to about the same.
It took almost no time at all to get him moved. Hana had greeted Naruto warmly, smirking at the look Kiba had given him and Kiba had nearly punched his sister. It was only because she was as fit, as fast and hit as hard as he did, that he didn’t. That and he didn’t want to have to explain to Naruto why he was punching his sister.
They’d stopped at Starbucks and plied Hana with coffee on the way back to Kiba’s apartment. They had to take the back entrance and elevator but in short order, they were in front of the door. After Kiba unlocked it, he turned to Naruto, nervous. Akamaru was usually the first test for any prospective roommate. If his dog hated the roommate, it wasn’t happening. Likewise, if the roommate hated the dog, things usually got ugly really quick. "Um, before we go in, I should warn you that Akamaru is big. And friendly."
Naruto nodded. "You told me. Don’t worry, I like dogs."
Kiba took a deep breath. "And Hana’s three are here. They’re Huskies, so they’re kind of big, too. Not a lot of room in the place when they’re all here," he said, chuckling nervously.
Naruto laughed. "I guess! It’s okay, really."
Kiba raised his eyebrows but nodded and, with a deep breath, opened the door. Akamaru was sitting at the end of the hall and Kiba stepped to the side to let Naruto precede him into the apartment. Naruto set down his computer by the door and walked up to the dog. He squatted down to Akamaru’s level and held out a hand. Kiba’s heart did a slow roll at the action, especially when Akamaru put his paw in Naruto’s hand. "Akamaru, nice name. You’re big. Here’s the thing, as long as you don’t slobber on my underwear, don’t chew up the cords on my computer or PS3 and don’t eat all my food, we’re good."
Akamaru barked once.
Naruto grinned over his shoulder at Kiba. "I like him!"
Kiba swallowed around his dry throat and turned to Hana, who was grinning. "He’s a keeper," she whispered into Kiba’s ear before stepping around her brother and into the apartment. "Nezumiiro! Haiiro! Kaihaku!" She called and her three huskies came up to her. Naruto turned wide eyes to them, but she held her hand up and flattened it and all three dogs sat for her. "Good boys!" She praised them and doggy tongues all lolled out of their mouths at the same time. "This is Naruto. He’s a friend. Don’t eat him."
Naruto’s eyes widened comically, but all three simply came up and licked at his face and he laughed, falling over for all four dogs to start licking him silly. He just kept laughing and letting them have their way until Hana called the huskies back and Kiba pulled Akamaru off of him. "I guess they like me," Naruto said, sitting up and wiping dog slobber off his face with his t-shirt.
Kiba grinned. "Yup. Ya pass," he said, offering his hand to help Naruto up. "And Akamaru doesn’t do any o’ that stuff. Your cables and food and, uh, underwear are all safe from him."
Naruto laughed. "Alright, then."
They made quick work of unpacking the car and Hana went off to get groceries to cook for them. Naruto had, rather awkwardly, tried to offer money to help pay for it, but she just waved her hand, muttered something about paying for her good-for-nothing little brother and sipped at her coffee on the way to the car. He blinked as she left, then turned back to Kiba, who said nothing and just started to help him unpack.
Several hours later, his clothes were hung up, other things put away, his electronics were connected and they were sitting on the couch in the living room, trying to kill each other in Halo on Kiba’s xbox. They were laughing and just having a lot of fun. And Kiba was loving it.
Neither paid attention to the passage of time, but as Hana was finishing up in the kitchen, Akamaru came up to remind Kiba that he hadn’t eaten. "Alright, buddy," he said, and headed into the kitchen to put down food for his companion, trying to move around his sister.
He felt eyes on him the whole time and it took everything he had to keep from looking over. With every twist and bend, Kiba wondered if Naruto liked the view or what was running through his mind. Of course, he couldn’t know and he wasn’t about to ask. He caught the sly look in Hana’s eyes and tried his best to ignore it. The last thing he wanted to do was explain a blush.
"Uh, I just realized what time it is. I gotta get ready to go to the club. Did you still want to go with me?" Kiba asked, trying not to bite his lip.
Naruto grinned. "You bet! I gotta clean up, though." He made a face, glancing down at himself.
"You can have the shower first, if ya want," Kiba offered, but Naruto shook his head.
"Go ahead, I gotta check my email and stuff. I shoulda called my godfather earlier, he’s gonna be pissed," he said, scratching the back of his head.
"Okay. Uh, I’ll be out soon," Kiba said and escaped into his room. He had the bigger bedroom of the two, mostly because he had a bigger bed. Akamaru had gotten used to sleeping with him as a puppy, but now, as a full-grown Great Pyrenese, the dog took up a lot more space than before. So, after many failed attempts to keep his companion off the bed, he gave up and just used a bigger one.
He pulled his club clothes out: faded, torn jeans, button down shirt and boots and headed into the bathroom to shower. He wondered what Naruto was going to say -- if anything -- when he saw the retainers he kept in his eyebrows and nose were replaced with silver. After combing his hair -- and failing, yet again, to tame it, he stepped out of the bathroom with his towel around his hips and turned toward the bedroom.
Kiba paused in the hallway when Naruto came out of his room, also in a towel. There was a very awkward moment when they stared at each other without speaking. Kiba tried desperately to keep his eyes from dropping, but he wasn’t able to resist. His gaze slid down over the toned, slightly tanned chest and flat stomach, following the pale blond trail that disappeared below the towel. He swallowed and knew that his cheeks were bright red around his birthmarks.
But when he looked up, he saw the blue eyes had done their own perusal and Kiba’s cock twitched at the knowledge. It was already half-hard and he knew if he didn’t get out of there, he’d embarrass himself horribly, but he couldn’t seem to move. The intense cerulean eyes fascinated him, especially with the way they traced the lines of his own muscles.
Finally, their gazes met again and both stood there for a full minute, not moving, barely breathing. Brown was locked on blue as they stared, neither willing to be the first to break the silence, neither capable of breaking the tension. "Kiba!" Hana called and the moment was gone.
His sister paused at the end of the hall. "Oooo, sexy," she said with a grin and Kiba rolled his eyes. Naruto blushed, mumbled something about his shower and disappeared into the bathroom. Hana smirked at Kiba. "You might want to, uh, wear tight jeans tonight," she said with a snicker and Kiba, despite his attempt not to, dropped his eyes to see a tent at the front of his towel.
He growled. "Do you have something you want to say? Besides to embarrass me?"
Hana laughed. "I’m your sister, it’s what I do." She took the few steps between them and poked his shoulder. "Don’t forget to use a condom. I want my brother alive for a long time."
Kiba’s color got worse, if that was possible. "Hana!" He glared at her and she shook her head.
"Fine! Fine. Just be safe, whatever you do. Okay?" Kiba gave a grump nod and she let it go. " Okay. There are three different casseroles in the freezer. Even with you two, that should last a few days. Try not to live on ramen when it’s gone," she said with a sigh, then stepped back. "Mom is expecting you for Thanksgiving. Don’t forget."
Kiba sighed. "I know, I know. Two weeks. Fine." He waved at his sister as she headed down the hall, called to the huskies, then let herself out. He turned to his bedroom and shut the door a little too hard to be considered normal. He leaned back against it and banged his head against the door.
What had that been? There was no doubt whatsoever that Naruto had been looking at him. Checking him out, even. Did that mean that Naruto was as interested in him as he was the other man? God, he hoped so. But where did that fit in with things?
Kiba... wasn’t someone that just got into sex for the sake of sex. He’d had it before, sure. But he’d figured out pretty quickly he wasn’t interested in just fucking around for the fun of it. He like sex, but the one boyfriend he’d had in high school had shown him that he liked having that one person.
But he realized he had no idea if Naruto was that way. And if the man had been determined not to get involved because he had to concentrate on studies, what would that mean for them? Would Naruto only want sex? And would Kiba be willing to settle for that? He banged his head against the door one more time, wondering if he could knock some sense into himself that way.
With a sigh, he gave up trying to figure it out right then and went to get dressed instead. A few minutes later, he was in the living room, waiting for Naruto. Not long after, Naruto came out, dressed much like he was: snug, faded jeans, a button down shirt that was also close-fitting and some kind of loafers or something on his feet. Kiba didn’t pay too much attention because the messy blond hair was still wet and there was metal in the whiskered face. Lip, eyebrow and nose all sported silver hoops and he couldn’t help but stare. Holy fuck, the man was hot.
Kiba was very grateful for his own snug jeans.
"So, um, you ready?" He asked for something to say and Naruto shook his head as if to wake himself from something.
"Yeah," Naruto said in a rough voice then cleared his throat.
Kiba waved a hand at the door and they grabbed their jackets before heading down to the street. "Um," Naruto started, but stopped when they paused at the streetlamp. There, parked against it was a motorcycle. Naruto whistled. "Is that yours?"
Kiba grinned. "Yup. Ducati 749 Dark. It’d been in an accident and was a mess. Mom bought it for me, but I had to earn the money to fix it up, which I did." He shook his head. "Took me the entire summer after my senior year to buy all the parts and fix it. But I don’t regret a thing."
"It’s gorgeous," Naruto said, a little reverently.
"It’s my baby. After Akamaru, that is," Kiba said with a laugh. He picked up a helmet and held it out to Naruto. "I’ve only got one, but you take it. We can get another one if ya wanna ride with me for stuff."
Naruto blinked at him, hesitating for a moment, then took it the helmet and pulled it on adjusting the strap. Kiba swung his leg over and kicked the stand back. It took everything in him to keep from closing his eyes when he felt Naruto against his back. With a wicked smile, he kicked it on and glanced over his shoulder. "Better hold on, I like it fast."
Naruto grinned and gripped Kiba’s waist. With a rev of the engine, Kiba took off down the road with a shout.
He took the turns a little too sharply, went just a little faster than he normally would, but he didn’t care one bit. Because after the second turn, Naruto’s arms were around him and that sexy body was nearly glued to his.
Normally, he was glad of the short trip to the club. He hated traffic and though he loved the bike, he didn’t mind just getting to the club and getting started. He loved his job as a disc jockey, so he was usually anxious to just get there. He had plenty of other opportunities to ride his bike for the fun of it.
But this time, the short trip to the club meant that his ride with Naruto wrapped around him wasn’t nearly long enough for his taste. He consoled himself with the fact that he’d be taking Naruto home, too.
Home to their apartment. He suddenly didn’t mind it so much.
The club was relatively small, in a shopping and office center almost right on the water. One entire side of the complex was restaurants, including a fondue place and a Hard Rock Cafe. His club was tucked between the two.
They were early, of course. The doors were still open, bouncers inside instead of out by the velvet ropes. Kiba grinned at the man that approached them. He was huge, taller than both Naruto and Kiba, big around with a full head of long brown hair and an expression that dared anyone to comment on either his size or his hair. He looked... well, he looked fat, but Kiba knew that it was just a facade. Chouji Akamichi wasn’t fat, he was solid and was one of the better bouncers they had. "Kiba!" The man said with a grin and bumped fists with Kiba.
"Hey Chouji. This is Naruto, he’s my new roommate. I thought I’d bring him up, show him my rig and stuff. Naruto, this is Chouji, a.k.a. Butterfly, head of security here and student at our school." Kiba waved a hand toward Naruto.
Chouji’s smile widened and he held out a hand. Naruto shook it, a grin splitting his own face, shooting a slightly puzzled look at Kiba who just grinned back. "Nice to meet you."
Chouji nodded. "Same here. Do me a favor: don’t try to drink and we’ll get along just fine." He grinned when Naruto nodded then turned back to Kiba. "Can’t wait to hear the tunes, man. See ya later, got stuff to do," he said and threw a wave up as he turned toward the door.
Kiba returned the wave and turned to talk to Naruto as they walked toward the booth in the corner. Naruto turned to Kiba. "Butterfly?"
Kiba nodded and laughed. "The rumor is that he’s got a butterfly tattooed on his ass. Though, no one’s willing to approach him to ask. And the one person that knows -- his girlfriend Ino -- won’t tell. The real reason is that he’s fast for his size. I saw him get into a fight out here once, some asshole named Jirobo, who was trying to get in and cause all sorts of trouble. Chouji flitted around the guy, who couldn’t seem to lay a hand on him. It was really cool to watch." He shook his head and chuckled. "I wouldn’t get on his bad side."
They stepped up into the booth and Kiba grinned over at Naruto. "Now, this is my baby." He was proud of the rig there. He’d set it up himself, helped the owner pick the parts and built it from the ground up. He could automate an entire show -- or several, if he wanted, with the computer that ran it, or he could do it all manually himself. In fact, he had a couple of pre-recorded shows that his boss could run if he couldn’t make it in for some reason. But he liked to do it all himself, like to be able to change the music on the fly, if he wanted, heat it up or cool it down, depending on what he saw on the dance floor. And he was good at it.
He realized somewhere along the way that he was running off at the mouth as he described the parts for the computer he’d built. But Naruto just had a big smile on his face and before he knew it they were lost in discussions about computers and parts which spilled into games and a whole mess of other things. Luckily, he could set up the show with his eyes closed, so he worked while they talked, but had to give his attention to the crowd when it was time to start the show itself.
He started up a set and turned to Naruto. "Want something to drink? We can have pop and juice and stuff."
"Sure," Naruto agreed and Kiba headed over to the bar. A moment later, he returned with two glasses of coke and handed one to Naruto. They sipped in silence for a moment, then he watched Naruto set the empty glass down and move closer. "So... do you just spin, or do you dance, too?" Naruto asked. Naruto had to lean into Kiba’s ear, the music and noise, even in the booth, was much too loud. The hot breath on Kiba’s ear went straight to his cock.
Kiba looked up at Naruto and the only thing he could think in that moment was that Naruto was much too close. Kiba was still a ball of confusion about him. He still wanted Naruto badly, but he still really wanted the whole thing, not just sex and he still hadn’t figured out what Naruto might want. Or what he might settle for. He shoved the confusion aside. "Yeah, I dance. You?"
Naruto had no idea why he’d asked. He’d been confused as all hell since the other night after coffee. He hadn’t been able to get his mind off of Kiba Inuzuka, and not just because he was moving in with the man, either. Kiba, much to Naruto’s chagrin and irritation, fascinated him.
He had gotten past the fact that Kiba reminded him of the things he missed about home. He’d spent an hour and a half on the phone with his godfather about that very subject the night after they’d had coffee. Jiraiya had patiently talked him through it and Naruto had started to feel a lot better.
Even with that, he still didn’t quite get his fascination with Kiba. But then again, he’d been off kilter with Kiba ever since he’d first met the man.
Then there was that... whatever the hell it was... before his shower. He doubted he’d ever get the image of a half-naked, still-wet, water-dripping Kiba out of his head. The man was so sexy it wasn’t even funny. He’d been lucky that Kiba was distracted by his sister because otherwise the large tent in the front of his towel would have been very obvious -- and very embarrassing.
The only saving grace was the one Kiba had been sporting, too.
He’d escaped into the bathroom but found himself having to take care of things in the shower. Not that he had a problem masturbating, it was, after all, one of his favorite past times especially since he wasn’t dating anyone. But he hadn’t wanted to take that much time in the shower. It had been awfully damned insistent, however, his erection refusing to go away even in nearly-icy water and he’d ended up pretty much having to wrap his hand around his cock and start stroking himself. It hadn’t taken long, his hard cock already dripping pre-cum by the time his palm made the trip along the hard length a few times.
His eyes slid closed and the first thing that came to mind was the image of a very wet, defined chest... and large fang birthmarks. His imagination supplied the rest and before he knew it, his balls were tight and he was biting his lip to keep from shouting as his climax hit. His mind had also helpfully supplied a deep, growling voice, coaxing him along and telling him to cum, baby.
But in the end, it was the sexy eyes, full of heat that had sent him over the edge.
With a muffled shout, he did cum, coating the wall in front of him in thick, white spray. When he’d squeezed every last bit out of himself, imagining it going over that sexy chest instead, he fought to find oxygen, eventually recovering. But it took him a long time.
And all of that just led to more questions. Did Kiba find him attractive, too? What would Kiba want with him, if he did? Fuck buddies? Or more?
And did that really matter to Naruto?
He was determined to do well in school and he knew that he couldn't afford a lot of distractions if he was going to manage it, and that included a hot, sexy roommate. Naruto had never been the best student. That was a combination of his study habits -- which sucked -- and the fact that he just didn’t learn quite the same way everyone else did. He’d had to try harder to get the basic stuff which, consequently, made motivation to do the rest that much more difficult for him.
So, he knew that if he wanted to do well, he was going to have to work at it. And any kind of distraction was going to make that about a hundred times harder. But those convictions were getting more difficult to hold on to in light of the person he was now sharing an apartment with.
Kiba.
The man who was looking at him right now in the DJ booth with confusion... and hunger in the exotic eyes. "Yeah, I dance," he answered belatedly. He turned to look out over the crowd, not quite able to take intense look any more and started to dance.
A moment later, he felt the body against him, Kiba’s chest against his back and they moved together to the music. The heavy beats worked their way through the floor, the speakers pounding out the rhythm. The heat of the club, even in the DJ booth, insane. Naruto turned to face Kiba and they continued to dance, bodies close, but not quit touching. Their eyes were locked to each other, neither able to look away, hot breath on each other’s faces, making Naruto damned near ache to close the short distance slant his lips over Kiba’s.
Naruto lost track of time and place, was focused only on the man in front of him. They didn’t touch, didn’t put their hands on each other, but it was no less sensual for all of that and was, in fact, even more so. So it was something of a surprise when Kiba stepped back, regret in his eyes. "I have to, uh, work," he said and Naruto could hear the slight shakiness in his voice.
He nodded without speaking and they stood, staring at each other for a long moment. "Um, would you like another coke?" Naruto finally asked. He needed to get out of there a moment, needed to breathe. Kiba nodded and, without another word, Naruto escaped the booth.
By the time he got back with their drinks, the tension had eased. Kiba was fully involved in his work and Naruto sat back and simply watched as songs were loaded and laughed at the comments Kiba called out. When Kiba had a chance to take a short break, they didn’t dance again, just went outside for a few to get air and talked about the music.
Naruto wasn’t sure if he was disappointed or happy about it all.
At the end of the night, he helped Kiba put everything away and they waved at Chouji on the way out. He climbed onto the back of the Ducati and didn’t bother with the pretense of putting his hands on Kiba’s waist. He wrapped his arms around the other man and held on. The ride home was short and Naruto found himself glad for it.
He was confused enough for one night.
"Well, um, thanks for going," Kiba started, standing in the hallway between the two bedrooms.
"I had a great time," Naruto assured him. "Thanks for inviting me."
Kiba nodded. "Well, uh, I have to walk Akamaru, but then I guess we should get some sleep. Hope the bedroom’s okay."
"It’s great, really. Um, thanks again. Night, Kiba," he said and they both stood there for a very uncomfortable moment before Naruto turned into his room, closing his door quietly.
He stripped quickly and climbed onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. Kiba was fascinating, sexy, fun... and scary as hell. Naruto had been alone for a very long time. For all he’d had a crush in high school, it had been safe because he knew he’d never have a chance with the likes of Sasuke Uchiha. Besides, in the end, he realized that it had been a crush because he hadn’t been nearly as upset about Sasuke leaving as he should have been.
He’d spent most of his life alone. And he had no idea how not to be. All the rest, he knew in the deepest parts of himself, were excuses. It would take him a long time to fall asleep.
Kiba stood at the edge of the park with the leash in his hand while Akamaru ran out his energy chasing the few remaining squirrels of the season and scaring pigeons away. Every so often he’d stop to mark a tree or bench or something, finally coming back to sit in front of Kiba and wait patiently for his master to get ready to go.
But Kiba was lost in blue eyes, blond hair and whisker birthmarks. He was busy thinking about the feel of a toned body against him, the smell of the man that was now his roommate, the memory of a dance much more sensual than it should have been. His eyes closed and he could still feel it, smell it and see it.
A bark brought him back to the present and he looked down at Akamaru. "Sorry, bud, come on," he said and turned toward home. Once inside, he locked up, paused outside Naruto’s room and fought against the urge to peek in at him, instead heading into his own bedroom. As he stretched out on his bed, eyes fixed on the ceiling, he sighed. It was going to be a long night.
Dawn was streaking the sky before he finally fell asleep.
