The front door slammed loudly. Naruto jumped, burning his hand on the stove in his alarm.
“Jesus, fucking shit!” He shouted, his skin already turning a violent red.
“Well, I’m glad Umeko wasn’t around to hear that,” there was a tap of heels on tiled flooring and then Sakura was beside him, staring with a frown. “What did you do this time dummy?”
“Me! You’re the one going around banging doors like a lunatic.”
Sakura rolled her eyes before grabbing his wrist and forcing his hand under the tap, the cold water soothed the burn quickly. They stood in comfortable silence for a while, both staring out the kitchen window watching their daughter play in the sunlight.
“She’s grown,” Sakura said.
Numerous nasty thoughts invaded Naruto’s brain then, you’d know that if you were around and you picked your work over your family and I’m surprised you even remember what she looks like. These were all just spiteful thoughts though, thoughts that Naruto dubbed his ex-husband thoughts, that nasty voice that wanted Sakura to feel bad for leaving, no matter how mutual it had been.
Instead he smiled and nodded, although from the guilty flash in Sakura’s eyes Naruto suspected that he never needed to voice those thoughts—Sakura already hated herself.
“I’m glad you could come today,” Naruto said, attempting to make Sakura feel better, “dealing with the Uchiha’s alone is not my area of expertise.”
Sakura laughed, “I’m soo not playing referee to your pissing match, I did enough of that in school.”
She shut off the tap and scrutinised his burn.
“Well, you’re lucky, we won’t need to amputate this time,” she said, letting his hand fall to his side.
Naruto grinned, “What? You’re not going to kiss it better?”
She laughed and gave him a shove, “Alright chef Uzumaki, anything you need me to do?”
“I’ve got the great Uzumaki-Uchiha peace banquet covered, go see Umeko. They’ll be here in a few hours, see if you can wrestle her into a clean outfit before then?”
“I’ll do my best.” Sakura made her way to the back door before turning , “Oh! And don’t poison the Uchiha’s!”
“I make no promises!” Naruto grinned at Sakura’s eye roll.
The door clicked shut quietly behind her and Naruto allowed himself a moment to watch Umeko run into her mother’s arm with a loud squeal. With a small smile he turned back to the job at hand, determined to make it a meal that not even fussy Sasuke Uchiha could complain about.
**“Daddy this is the worst day ever!” Umeko said.
Naruto was busy setting the dining room table, the Uchiha’s were due any minute and he was panicking, he hadn’t had time to change into something more presentable and he was doubting his cooking abilities and he was dimly this was the first dinner party he’d ever arranged and how horrible it could go wrong.
“Daddy!”
“Yes sweetie,” Naruto said, distracted. Wait, have I set those knives and forks the right way around?
“I said this is the worst day ever!”
“Oh? Why’s that?”
“I have to wear THIS,” Umeko pulled at the edges of her dress, frowning deeply, “AND I have to have dinner with stupid Kyoshi!”
Naruto sighed and could feel the beginnings of a headache, how could he have been so stupid, Umeko and Kyoshi sitting and having dinner together was going to be a disaster. He eyed the phone and thought about calling the whole thing off. Sakura entered the dining room with a pitcher of water and caught his nervous expression.
“Oi, Naruto. Go get changed, I’ll finish up. Umeko, put your dress down, I do not want to see your underwear. “
Naruto gave Sakura a grateful smile and dashed out the room as Umeko began to explain to Sakura just how unfair her whole life was and who was the horrible person that invented dressed anyway!
**
He’d just finished putting on his shirt when he heard the doorbell.
“Daddy! The door!”
Naruto dashed down the stairs, taking them two at a time, and stood in front of the closed door awkwardly. His hands were sweaty and he was surprised at how genuinely nervous he felt, he hadn’t been this bad since the time he asked Sakura to marry him.
Umeko stood next to him and tugged at his sleeve, “Open it then daddy.”
He smiled at her before throwing the door open, “Welcome!”
His smile felt forced on his face as he looked at his dinner guests. Ino Uchiha’s long blonde hair was down and wavy, she was grinning at Naruto and he knew she found his discomfort amusing. Her arm was linked with Sasuke who was doing his best to look completely bored by everything around him. Between them stood Kyoshi, eyes downcast, gripping a bouquet of bright orange roses.
Ino gave Kyoshi’s shoulder a little shove. He stepped forward, thrusting out the flowers at Umeko. She took them, giving them a confused look. She stared at them for a moment before turning to Naruto.
“Daddy, I think these are for you.”
Kyoshi spoke up before Naruto could comment. “No, they’re for you.”
Umeko gave him a funny look, “But, I hate orange.”
Naruto didn’t know if he should laugh or cry, things were already falling apart. Why couldn’t Umeko just take the damn flowers? Kids!
Kyoshi looked livid; he turned on his father, arms crossed.
“See Father, I told you!”
Ino let out a small chuckle and Naruto thought he could see a faint blush on Sasuke’s cheeks. Naruto, deciding it was time to do some damage control, swept the roses out of Umeko’s hands and gave them a deep sniff.
“Thanks Mr Uchiha, they’re beautiful, I’m going to put them in my office!” Naruto said with a grin and a wink, “please come in, make yourself at home.”
The red in Sasuke’s cheeks was obvious now but Naruto wasn’t sure if it was from embarrassment or anger.
“I’ll just go get a vase for these, Umeko can you take them through to the living room and then get Mommy?”
“Yep!”
Umeko grabbed Ino’s hand and led her away, the two boys following like ducklings. Naruto could hear his daughter telling Ino that her hair was pretty and had she been forced into a dress as well?
**
Drinks in the living room had gone without drama, but with plenty of awkward silence between Naruto and Sasuke. Ino and Sakura had sat on the sofa, gossiping happily and sipping on cocktails all old rivalry’s forgotten. Even Kyoshi and Umeko were got along, both sitting next to each other and taking it in turns to play on Umeko’s handheld console.
Sasuke and Naruto had hovered near each other, both gripping their non-alcoholic beers and pointedly not looking at each other.
“Soo…” Naruto had attempted at one point, Sasuke had glanced at him with an eyebrow raised. “Do you…uh….sports? Watch any sports?”
“No.”
“Heh! Me neither.”
That had been the end of that. Naruto had been too embarrassed to attempt anything else and Sasuke was probably too much of an asshole to try. So Naruto had ducked into the kitchen to check on the starter.
Now they were gathered around the dinner table; Sasuke and Naruto sat as heads of the table, sitting opposite one another, Ino and Sakura had decided to sit beside each other and so Umeko and Kyoshi had been forced to endure one another again, although there hadn’t been any drama about it for once.
Naruto brought in the starter, pumpkin soup. Once everyone was settled they said thanks and dug in. Naruto couldn’t help but shoot glances at Sasuke to see what he thought, and to his delight after a hesitant first sip he quickly finished off the first course.
The second course went over just as well as the first. Naruto spotted Umeko pushing away her peas and went to tell her to eat her vegetables when Kyoshi scrapped them onto his plate and began to eat them. Umeko had beamed at him as if he’d just rescued her from a burning house. Naruto decided to leave off scolding her this time.
“Well, Mrs Uzumaki, that was delicious, thank you.”
Sakura blushed at Sasuke’s kind words and shot Naruto an awkward look.
“Aaah, it’s, erm, actually Miss Haruno, but please call me Sakura—we’ve know each other since we learned the alphabet Sasuke! Anyway, I didn’t cook it.”
Sasuke’s eyebrow shot up at that, “The idiot did?”
Naruto bristled but refused to rise to the bait.
“The idiot is sitting right here you know. And yeah, it was me.”
“Thought you could barely manage cup ramen.”
Naruto shrugged. “People change.”
“So I’ve noticed,” Sasuke stared at him so intently that Naruto was a little worried there was something on his face. When he finally broke eye contact Naruto had the mixed sensation of relief and loss.
“So Sakura, didn’t want to take the Uzumaki name?” Sasuke asked.
Naruto played with his food and tried to ignore the tense silence and the twisting feeling in his gut. He’d never wanted Sasuke to find out that he was divorced, didn’t want him to know he’d been unable to keep his wife, didn’t want Sasuke to have his greatest failure to lord over him.
“Mommy is an ex-Uzumaki, right Daddy?”
He shot a smile at his daughter.
“That’s right.”
He glanced at Sasuke who couldn’t hide his discomfort.
“I..I’m sorry for being indelicate.”
Normally Naruto would’ve teased the Uchiha, after all it was the first time—no, remembering the press of lips on his—the second time he’d heard the man apologise. Instead he decided to cut Sasuke a break.
“No worries, you didn’t know.”
With that the tension was chased out the room and everyone finished up their meals between idle chat.
Desert had been hard for Naruto. At the back of his mind he was sure Sasuke didn’t like sweet food, he wasn’t sure how he knew that, some lingering memory from childhood perhaps, but he didn’t want to give Sasuke a reason to refuse to eat his food.
He doled out the ice cream sundaes, saving Sasuke till last. He saw Sasuke frown at the decadent food and then start with surprise when Naruto placed a simple fruit salad in front of him. Naruto shrugged at Sasuke’s questioning look.
The kids helped Naruto clear the table and load up the dishwasher before disappearing upstairs to play. He was washing the few remaining pots when he heard the sounds of footsteps behind him.
“I’ll be in once I’ve finished up in here Sakura, the bastard causing trouble?”
“I’ve been on my best behaviour actually, Uzumaki.”
Naruto groaned, typical. He glanced behind him expecting to see a furious scowl but the man actually looked sort of…amused.
“What are you doing in here?”
“My wife is drunk,” Sasuke stated simply.
Naruto threw a cloth at him, “Make yourself useful then.”
They finished the dishes together in comfortable silence. Naruto actually feeling surprised at how easy it had all been, that years of hatred and rivalry had been set aside. He was feeling so optimistic that when a soggy cloth made contact with the back of his head he could only stare at Sasuke in shock.
Sasuke, for his part, looked totally unphased that he’d just smacked Naruto around the head with a dishcloth. He continued to dry dishes as if the whole thing had never happened.
“What the hell was that for?”
“You were humming,” Sasuke said.
“So!”
“It was annoying,” Sasuke said with a smirk.
“Jerk,” Naruto muttered, and stuck his tongue out at the man.
Sasuke was staring at him again; the same intense look from the dinner table. Naruto fought not to squirm under his gaze. One pale hand came up to run fingers along Naruto’s jaw. Naruto’s breath hitched and he staggered back.
“Wha-“
“Bubbles,” Sasuke interrupted quickly, raising his fingers for Naruto to see. Naruto nodded stiffly.
“I’ll…I’ll go check on the kids. This can wait till later.”
Before Sasuke could argue, Naruto fled.
**
An hour later Sakura found him sitting on Umeko’s bed reading the two children Harry Potter.
“Come on Kyoshi, your mom and dad are ready to go.”
“Okay Miss Haruno, thanks for reading to us Mr Uzumaki. Father never does the voices.” Kyoshi said. “See you in school Umeko.”
Naruto laughed, “Anytime Kyoshi.”
Umeko followed them downstairs but Naruto lingered, he knew he needed to go down and say goodbye to his guests. He was being stupid anyway, freaking out over a casual touch, a friendly touch. Hell, he was the king of invading people’s private space; he shouldn’t be so shook up over this.
He got to his feet and marched downstairs before he could talk himself out of it.
Ino was leaning heavily on Sasuke for support and she had a slightly crazed grin on her face.
“Naruto, get here you big idiot.” Naruto abruptly found himself with an armful of Ino. “Thanks for this, it’s been great.”
She planted a soggy kiss on his cheek, “Same time next week?”
“Sure, your place or mine,” Naruto said, waggling his eyebrows. Ino laughed and untangled herself from him.
“We would be honoured if you and your family would join us for dinner next week,” Sasuke said.
Naruto looked over to Sakura, figuring they’d have to work around her schedule.
“I’m out of town next week, but I’m sure Naruto and Umeko would love to join you, right Naruto?”
“Sure,” Naruto said, deliberately avoiding Sasuke’s gaze.
“Next week then.”
“Next week.”
