The piece going with the first chapter is of a sleeping Jiraiya: Enjoy: - http://ratchets-sparkling.deviantart.com/#/d3jz7a8 I just want to give a warning I'm going to be messing with the time line in the anime and manga a bit. This pairing is Jiraiya/Naruto. ---------------------------------------- The bathhouses were filled with laughter and the chattering of woman; it was the perfect spot for Naruto's training and to get a little research done. Leading Naruto towards a small stream behind the bathhouses Jiraiya watched as Naruto was bouncing on the balls of his feet; eager to get started. Jiraiya smiled; the enthusiasm seemed to have sprung from nowhere but he struggled to find a glimmer of dread and fear like he had seen the day before. Yet; beneath the surface he knew it was still there... "Ok Naruto; since you're still recovering we'll start with simple chakra control. I think the best is to start with the walking on water technique." The blond seemed to frown at his words but nodded anyway. Jiraiya explained the basics whilst demonstrating the technique and watched as Naruto followed him for a half a step before plunging into the cold water below. He couldn't help but chuckle; the disgruntled pout and wet hair was just too adorable to ignore. "I think since you're going to be soaked in water today; it's best to strip into your underwear." Jiraiya watched as blue eyes widened and blinked owlishly before nodding reluctantly as he carried out the instruction. "Try moulding the chakra in your feet before stepping into the water Naruto; it may help." Naruto nodded and did as he was told. Jiraiya watched as the black seal became visible but over that seal was another; he frowned when had Orochimaru gotten a chance to do a five element seal? Something just wasn't adding up; he didn't notice he was staring until Naruto's voice dragged him from his thoughts. "Hey; Ero-sennin! Why are you staring at me?" Jiraiya blinked before standing up; he was going to have to do this without Naruto's knowledge. He didn't want to frighten the blond. "Oh; I was just thinking that you look kind of sexy." He watched as blue eyes widened before narrowing at him in suspicion. Well; he wasn't laying completely. Even at fourteen; Naruto was well built. Narrow hips a well proportionate torso and a vey angelic face with beautiful features. "Nani?!" Naruto yelled; he wasn't so sure why anyone would think that but was dragged from his surprise by callused fingertips tracing over his navel. He gasped and looked up at black eyes; noticing that Jiraiya was deep in thought. Naruto had to fight off the intense feeling to squirm under the gaze and the simultaneous touch that felt oddly pleasant. "Close your eyes Naruto." The voice was deep and tinged with something Naruto didn't understand. Not wanting to disappoint his new sensei; Naruto pushed his emotions away and obeyed with minimal objection. Closing his eyes as he waited for something to happen, but not knowing exactly what. "That tickles." Naruto managed to say as he fought back the giggles building in his throat; it not only tickled but produced a strange heat in his belly. He had never felt tat before; it was a strange feeling that coiled in his abdomen and threatened to raise goose bumps across his skin as his muscles twitch under the ministrations of the Sannin. Those fingers were precariously persistent as they traced a familiar pattern. Naruto nearly jerked away when a breath was on his ear and Jiraiya's deep voice invaded his mind. His ear was adding to that tightening of that strange feeling in his stomach. "Humour an old man." That was the last thing he remembered as a sudden influx of chakra burst through his system and sent him flying backwards. Naruto had a second's worth of panic before he hit his head, hard, against a nearby tree. He stared at Jiraiya incredulously; shacking his head to clear the sudden dizziness before standing on shaky legs. He could barely walk straight: "What the hell Ero-sennin! That hurt! Just what did you do?" Naruto asked; rubbing at the bump forming on his head. He was too angered to feel as if something was wrong. A strange feeling flitted across his body; an influx of heated chakra that felt potent and familiar. It was strange but it didn't fell like he was out of control anymore instead he felt more in control of his own chakra. Jiraiya just observed him with gentle eyes and gave an encouraging smile. "It was my special chakra massage; now let's see if it helped. Try it again." Jiraiya looked on as Naruto tried to walk on the spring again and got it right on first try. Removing Orochimaru's seal had definitely helped. It was worth it to see those sparkling blue eyes as they shimmered in accomplishment and the honest 'thank you' that spilled from pouty pink lips. It was then that Jiraiya had decided he would take Naruto under his wing and train him in everything that he could. Just observing his immense potential was blinding for him; he had more potential than Minato had, had. ~ The rest of the day was filled with laughter and joy. It was time for some relaxation so Jiraiya led his student towards an outside hot spring. Jiraiya was patiently waiting for one of his summons to return; he had sent out the messenger frog to find Kakashi. He needed to speak with the copy-ninja... "Eh?! Ero-sennin? Why is he in here?" Naruto yelled as he pointed to a large frog in the water and Jiraiya laughed. Sometimes his summons were a bit too human like. "Well he better get out or he'll be a boiled frog." Their laughter rang out into the night; the moment shattered by the need to get rest. Naruto seemed to be worn out so Jiraiya fixed the camp whilst Naruto finished up. "You did well today Naruto." He praised as they sat around the crackling fire. Blue eyes shimmer with the praise; like he was starved for it but never received it. Jiraiya allowed a sigh to escape his lips as he turned his attention back towards Naruto. "Tomorrow I'm going to teach you an awesome Jutsu." He smiled as Naruto seemed to perk up and bounced where he sat; how he managed that Jiraiya would never know. The rest of the evening was filled with stories and promises of the future. Time was not an object as well into the light of the waning moon; Naruto drifted off to sleep. His body exhausted with the day's activities. Jiraiya watched silently as Naruto's features softened and his breath evened out. There was a small poof next to him as his summons appeared. "Jiraiya-sama; I've found him." The small frog squeaked and Jiraiya nodded before noting the location. It wasn't too far from here and would take about half and hour to get there if he travelled at full speed. He got ready to leave but turned to the summons. "Thank you; look after Naruto whilst I'm away. I won't be more than three hours." The summons nodded and Jiraiya took to the canopy of trees. It was just around midnight and the waning moon was uncharacteristically dim... ----------------------------------- The mountainous area was dangerous and a wrong step could send a highly trained shinobi to his death. Jiraiya was careful to keep his steps light as he sought out the light of a fire he knew would still be burning. He wasn't disappointed when an orange flame licked at the night air and his eyes found two figures were curled up close to it. "Found you." He sing songed to himself as he carefully made his way forward; hiding his chakra and waited a few metres from his target. Giving the famous copy-nin a few seconds to realize that there was someone close by. He wasn't surprised when a single black eye snapped open and stared straight at him. It wasn't a few milliseconds later when a kunai clanged against his; waking any shinobi like that was asking fir trouble so Jiraiya only chuckled. He could hardly be offended by a thrown kunai or shuriken considering he would have done the same thing. "It seems your reaction times are a bit slow tonight." The comment wasn't meant as an insult only a subtle warning. Jiraiya watched as Kakashi sat up on his bed roll and offered a seat to the Sannin. Jiraiya declined: "Jiraiya-sama what are you doing here?" Jiraiya shook his head and beckoned the copy-nin to follow him. "I don't want to upset your student should he hear our conversation." Kakashi nodded and followed obediently as Jiraiya led him towards a clearing on the mountains cape. There was silence for a while as Jiraiya sized up the copy-ninja; this may have been harder than he thought. He didn't want to be the bearer of bad news but this was going to be nothing but bad news. "What is it Jiraiya-sama? I thought you were still in Grass country?" The question was quiet but filled with confusion. Jiraiya sighed as he sat on a fallen log; motioning Kakashi do the same. "I was but I was drawn back towards Konoha because Orochimaru started moving again. I don't know what he is planning but he has been here; he left his mark on your student." "Sasuke? Yes, I know." Kakashi looked away guiltily; his failure to protect his student left him with a harsh wound across his heart. He was pulled from his emotions at the shake of Jiraiya's head. "Not Sasuke, but Naruto Kakashi." There was a stunned silence that followed for a few minutes. "But Naruto didn't possess the curse seal. I've looked but can't find anything." His words sounded hollow but deep down his sense of failure filled him all over again. He had failed Naruto? "Not his curse seal. He used the five element seal to lock away Kyuubi's chakra that flowed through Naruto." "But isn't that dangerous?" Kakashi asked. "Of course it is! Considering Naruto could have died had I not found it in time. I'm sure Minato is just about turning in his grave because of distress; Naruto would have meant the world to him. I should have taken Naruto with me after he was born; he would have been spared a lot of pain." Jiraiya looked away; knowing his mistake had robbed an innocent of a happy childhood spent with someone who accepted him. "Will he be alright? I left him with Ebisu. Maybe I should..." He was interrupted by a bitter chuckle. Kakashi frowned when he saw anger flash in those expressive eyes and the harsh laugh that escaped the Gama Sannin. "Kakashi; how much do you know about Naruto?" "All there is to know; what he likes, what he hates, his dreams, his incredible strength and that he is exactly like Minato-sensei." Jiraiya nodded at all those points but held up a hand to stop the copy-nin from continuing. "If you are aware of that then you will also know the fact that Naruto is not viewed as a human by the community and is often sensitive enough to believe those lies. I have always known you for a good judge of character but that last one was a huge mistake." Kakashi may have been considered a genius but the words that Jiraiya was spouting was confusing him. "What are you trying to say?" Jiraiya pinned the jounin with a stare and then allowed a tired sigh to escape his lips. "Ebisu nearly succeeded in killing Naruto the day before yesterday. It was no mere accident Kakashi; I watched as he threw kunai into a chakra drained Naruto and headed for the kill. If I had not stopped him; Naruto would have been dead. He risked everything to kill Naruto; who he thought should be held responsible for the death of the Yondaime and the families that suffered during the incident." "Y-you mean?" Kakashi trailed off; heart clenching painfully. Had he nearly caused the death of Naruto? "Yes. There are many left who still hate Naruto and what he holds within him. Kakashi; if Uchiha Sasuke possesses the curse mark of Orochimaru then I can understand why you chose to train him instead of Naruto. You may not have noticed it Kakashi; but Naruto was broken that you didn't praise him or even seem to spare him a glance after he got into the finals. He looks up to you; I'll try and explain to him why you chose the Uchiha over him but I cannot garentee that Naruto will not climb further into the empty mask he seems to have created in the face of so much hatred." Jiraiya's words were filled with sorrow and regret and Kakashi laid his head in his hands as he tried to decipher the words that Jiraiya had spoken. "I need to go. I'll look after him for now Kakashi until the finals of the Chuunin exams. I'll be watching in the background; I can feel that Orochimaru may make a move. Look after the Uchiha; he's going to need it more than ever." Jiraiya left Kakashi staring at the piece of grass where he had been mere seconds before. The silver haired nin gripped at his locks; what had he done? Was the fact that trying to act aloof and distancing himself from the reminder of his sensei only hurting his precious student? With a heavy heart he returned to the camp; the information Jiraiya had given him had left his mind spinning. "Kakashi-sensei? Where were you?" The words were spoken by a sleepy voice and Kakashi gave a closed eye smile before settling before the fire again. "I just scouted the perimeter." Dark hair bounced as Sasuke nodded before black eyes closed for sleep again. Leaving his troubled teacher to his own thoughts. ---------------------------------------------- Jiraiya came to a halt before descending from the tree; the sky was much lighter as the colours of morning already started creeping over the horizon. He approached their camp and found Naruto still fast asleep. The sudden wind whipping white strands about his face; Jiraiya brushed them away irritably. He sat down by the glowing embers of fire and watched as Naruto's chest rose and fell with even breaths; it seemed that he had worked himself hard enough to allow him to sleep peacefully. He tilted his head towards the last of the flickering stars above him; it was going to be a long day. ~ "Now Naruto this summoning technique requires a lot of chakra. Do you think you will be able to do it?" Jiraiya watched as Naruto bounced in his excitement. Jiraiya sighed at the blonde's antics but nodded as they approached the clearing. The frog he summoned was the keeper of the contract between the toads and the shinobi. "Now; I want you to write you name in blood on the inside of this scroll." Naruto nodded eagerly and stared at the open scroll. He didn't seem to notice the name right before his but instead did as he was told. Excitement building in him; maybe this would become the tool that would help him to be acknowledged by others. Naruto ran forward and gave the Gama Sannin an embrace; he was the third sensei figure that had accepted him wholly. The white haired Sannin seemed to be surprised but quickly returned the affection; knowing that Naruto needed physical affection in order to feel like he was human. It saddened him to think of the pain his godchild had to go through. Jiraiya did a demonstration and asked Naruto to do the same. He watched proudly as a small frog appeared; although it was small and still a tadpole it was a success in itself as it took Minato three days to even summon a tadpole. Jiraiya however encouraged Naruto with an underhanded trick. "Nani!? What is that!? It's not even a frog;" He turned his head away in seeming disgust. Smiling to himself when Naruto took the challenge and tried to do more. "That's the spirit Naruto; keep going." He encouraged softly as he headed over to the bushes; eyes roaming the spring he knew to be on the other side. Sure enough there were a group of girls there and he hummed to himself; he might have been the legendary Sanin of Konoha but he couldn't help the fact that he was a super hentai. Even as his eyes roamed the expanse of skin before him; he found no pleasure there in. Instead he wanted to watch Naruto but stopped himself; this in itself would encourage the young blonde to do more than he usually would and try harder to impress him. It reminded him of the day he had allowed Minato to sign the contract. Blue eyes teamed with courage and burned with a passion many never saw; just as Naruto's was now. He knew that he was limited to time and that he was going to have to play dirty in order for Naruto to extract the amount of chakra he needed on a whim but hopefully that fox wasn't so difficult to reach... "Hey; Ero-sennin look! It has legs and only a small tail." Jiraiya had bite back his laughter; so the blond was more observant than he thought. The sky overhead was becoming overcast and rain threatened to fall; he sighed as he began to set up camp. He was going to have to move fast; there was only a month until the chuunin exams and he wanted to teach Naruto to use Rasengan as well. First he needed some supplies and also Naruto needed to master the summoning technique. "We're going to be working hard Naruto; get some rest. I don't want you to pass out on me tomorrow." Naruto nodded as he finished his grilled fish and home made green tea. The atmosphere became heavy suddenly as Naruto fell into his thoughts; Jiraiya noticed the sudden change in Naruto's mood but waited until the teen started to talk. Blue eyes were hidden behind blond locks. "Ne, Ero-sennin?" He really hated that nickname but nothing seemed to stop Naruto from using it. It was endearing in a way but Jiraiya wished that he would just be 'Jiraiya' or 'Jiraiya-sensei' to Naruto one day. He turned towards Naruto where he noticed Naruto stared into his half finished cup of tea and seemed to curl in on himself. "Hmmm?" Jiraiya hummed to indicate that he was listening. The sudden mood change was strange and yet not unexpected. Minato tended to do that a lot too. "Do you think I will ever become stronger than Sasuke? He's my rival you know and I feel inferior to him even though I don't like to show it." Jiraiya stayed quiet for a while as he pondered the right answer. This was a serious question that Naruto had entrusted to him. "Naruto; with the right guidance and support you could become stronger than Kakashi; no even the Yondaime. In fact I believe that you will be able to become Hokage faster than you think possible." The words were soft spoken but held a beacon of hope for one who was starved for encouragement and affection. The small smile of gratitude and affection that broke across Naruto's face was worth the few simple words. He was still young; he forgave easily but was so easily broken if not already shattered at some point. "Go to sleep Naruto; tomorrow may just be your last but you should get some rest." The words slipped through his mouth. Luckily Naruto didn't seem to notice otherwise his plan to help Naruto learn the summoning technique may just have been blown. ----------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- Thanks for the read I'll see you again soon.
