Ch2: Art Historian
Sasuke stood in front of the painting tapping his foot in frustration. He had been bleeding from a bite on his lip for a while now but the copper fluid that swirled around his tongue had nothing to do with his nausea or his anxiety. The painting was to blame. The blond male hanging in front of him was becoming a demon in his eyes. The red drapery that he reclined on seemed to stir to life the longer he stared at it and the angry folds lashed out at him like fiery tails if he stared too long. The longer his sessions lasted the more life bubbled up from those blue eyes that gazed off at something that the blond seemed to find more interesting then the raven haired voyeur. And at times when Sasuke was passing by, the man’s rib cage would flicker in the corner of his eye as if the blond was laughing at him again. Ok Sasuke was well aware that the painting was not alive, but it was eerie. Like one of those paintings whose eyes followed you in horror films, except this one refused to assure him that he was in fact what it was interested in. Instead the disconnected eye contact spurred Sasuke’s paranoia further. It was like hearing someone snicker and turning around only to see that no one is there, or worse, that there are people and they all looked away quickly in unison. You knew they were talking about you, but you had no actual proof. And to top of it all he wouldn’t look at Sasuke no matter how long he stood there. All Uchiha’s made eye contact; it was part of their power and allowed them to see people’s intentions, kind of like a sixth sense. But this damned man who dared to lay so comfortably in his home refused to show Sasuke his eyes. And it was downright frustrating and alienating. It was during one of these many sessions on the third day of the paintings existence that Sasuke noticed something. He was way too comfortable with standing in the middle of his apartment holding a mug of coffee, and staring at a completely naked stranger for long periods of time. What was he a critic? Or an art historian trying to delve into the artist’s mind? Sasuke snorted at that last one. No way in hell did he ever want to delve into that mind. But no matter how hard he tried to detach himself from his roommate’s disturbing mind, he couldn’t help but feel he was starting to understand why Sai was so resistant in taking this specific piece down. He was never bored looking at the blond. Even though it was a painting of a single moment and there really were no techniques to give it motion like harsh diagonals or a narrative theme. It was just a man sitting in a room set up for him by Sai, but at the same time it wasn’t that simple. Sasuke tilted his head to the side before taking another sip from his coffee. It was the afternoon now and Sai wouldn’t be home until late, meaning that Sasuke could stare at the piece trying to place his interest without the fear of being caught. It was difficult to analyze the work when there was someone always hovering around your shoulder trying to prove that you cared. But now in the calm solitude of his empty apartment he could see the personality that Sai had mentioned. The way he denied Sai his perverted joy, and posed for the only decent picture Sasuke’s child hood friend would ever paint. The way his eyes hollowed with a pain no one around him could understand. A look Sasuke could relate to, and sympathize with. The way he was able to detach himself from his surroundings and make it seem like his viewer had just walked in on him, while in reality he was the stranger; something Sasuke oddly admired. He twisted reality to fit him and reality bent willingly. And he somehow made it seem as if sitting their naked and vulnerable was completely normal. It made Sasuke rethink his hatred for such art and he kind of wanted to…. “Sasuke!” Sasuke nearly jumped out of his skin when the door slammed open. He quickly slid onto the sofa and turned slightly to look over his shoulder as if he had been there the whole time. Luckily for him Sai was too busy unloading a large number of canvases against the doorway to have noticed. “Sasuke! Sasuke! Guess what….” Sai was talking a hundred miles per hour which never happened. He was actually surprised the boy could show that much emotion let alone in a few seconds time. It was a little overwhelming…. Sasuke raised an eyebrow as his version of a “What Sai? Do tell, I am soooo very interested.” But the other raven missed the sarcasm of the later part. “Naruto agreed to model again! Remember the gallery Itachi was arranging, well Naruto agreed to pose for my last piece.” Sasuke was lost. Who on earth was Naruto? And why should he care that he was going to be a repeat victim? “Sai calm down and tell me what the hell it is you are going on about. Who is Naruto? And why do you find it necessary to tell me about all of this?” Sasuke was wrestling the other canvases from Sai’s overstuffed arms while Sai struggled to pick up all his paints that had dropped to the floor. “What do you mean? You know Naruto.” Sasuke frowned as he placed the canvases against the wall. Why on earth did he need so many? “I assure you I don’t.” “And I ‘assure you’ you do. You see him all the time.” He said mocking Sasuke’s stony voice. Ok the cryptic answers were beginning to rub Sasuke the wrong way. “Would you knock it off? I would remember someone with a name like that.” he hissed. “Really Sasuke? He’s been hanging in front of your face pissing you off for three days now.” Sai pointed at the painting that had been absorbing Sasuke’s thoughts and his eyes widened. ‘Hewas coming here? Naruto?’ Sasuke sighed.‘That name is a bit different from what I had imagined.’ “Why do you look so surprised? Don’t worry we won’t bother you, we will be in my studio the whole time.” The dark haired artist carefully carried each of his pearl white canvases into his room pushing aside numerous nude figures that seemed determined to block the way for their creator and the new works that would steal his attention from them. Sasuke was relieved to hear they wouldn’t cross paths, but at the same time he felt a little disappointed. He wasn’t quite sure why though. “Why do you have so many?” the stoic tone of his voice masked all of his curiosity as he nodded his head in the direction of the paintless paintings. “To paint him. He hardly ever lets me do this so I’m going to take advantage of this chance.” He smiled at his paints as he set everything up and Sasuke couldn’t help but feel that he would try to take advantage of more than Naruto’s modeling skills. He wondered if Naruto could manage to elude a contract in porn twice in a row, or eight in this case. “When is he coming?” Sasuke was slightly irritated by the thought of opening his home up to a stranger who was somehow already naked in it. Now that he thought about it how long did it take Sai to do each painting? And the way he talked was as if Naruto would be in the apartment long enough to affect Sasuke, who usually worked late. “Sai… when is he leaving?” he added watching the fumbling man carefully. “Hmmm… well before you kill me can I finish putting my stuff out of harm’s way, or at least far enough where my blood won’t get on it.” To say chills ran down Sai’s spine would be an understatement when a cold and freakishly strong arm grabbed the back of his neck. “I know, I know. Pain then closet.” >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> “You’re staying at Sai’s?! Naruto, who will protect your precious virginity?” Sakura ‘s face contorted into a horrible attempt at shock and fear. She was not as good of an actor as Naruto. “You’re more suited for fashion design. No one has to see your face behind the curtain.” Naruto taunted, recycling their earlier joke. Yeah it sounded funnier in his head and it definitely lost its humor when he got a firm slap to the back of his head. “Here I am concerned for you and this is what I get?” She grabbed her drink and downed it. ‘My face is as beautiful as a cherry blossom in full bloom. Thus the name Naruto!’ Her inner self flamed to life inside her head and chugging her vodka was the best she could do to not murder her dense friend. “Oh come on Sakura-chan it was a joke.” He rubbed her shoulder only letting go when he felt the murderous aura reseed. “And besides, you and I both know that my virginity is long gone.” He smiled large and wide and any bystanders would have thought he just told the funniest joke in the world. But those who knew him, knew how sick of a joke it really was. Sakura’s eyes saddened and she grimaced when she saw a familiar look flash across her friend’s face before he quickly hid it away. Something he had practice doing. “Naruto…” Her voice was worried and her eyes swirled with concern. “Really Sakura I can promise you that Sai is only going to paint me, nothing else.” He quickly guided the subject back to its rightful place and ordered his pink haired partner a new drink, one that matched her fluorescent locks. She took the offered drink with a sigh before joining Naruto’s charade. “So will I need to buy you a taser?” “Maybe. I haven’t met the wifey yet.” Sai would kill him if he heard that. After hearing stories of his roommate’s leash like rules Sakura and Naruto had decided that they were like a married couple rather than friends. Well a very old married couple. “Nor have I but I’m about to, that’s why I’m living it up with you as best as I can before I die.” Naruto looked at her in confusion. “When did you decide to go visit?” “Yesterday, remember? Oh by the way how’s the fatal wound?”She joked buying herself some time before the conversation focused on why she was going. It took him a minute to realize what she meant before he hiked his leg straight up while remaining in his chair, earning a few pleased and admiring stares from other customers around the bar. He chuckled at the gazes and a blushing Sakura desperately tried to pull his leg down to a more reasonable level. He gave her his best fox like grin as he complied, lowering his foot to her eye level. Sakura tried very hard not to laugh. The foot was wrapped horribly in an ace bandage and the torn edges of various gauze popped out between the gaps of the poor wrap job. “Is it really that bad?” She joked reaching out to pull his foot onto her lap. He shook his head blushing at how horrible the wrapping was, he wasn’t experienced with ace bandaging or any bandaging for that matter. Sakura always took care of him and before that he had Iruka. Sakura unwrapped the foot and made a slightly alarming face that she quickly denounced. “It’s not bad, I was just surprised that your first aid actually helped rather than making it worse.” Naruto faked being shot and frowned at her rudeness. “I should at least be somewhat capable of what today’s children can do with unearthly skill.” Sakura smiled and bandaged his foot properly. “You know, Sai might not be too happy to find his beautiful muse damaged.” Naruto drank more of his beer to quench his suddenly dry throat. “He’s an artist, he’ll either force me to remove it, act as if it’s not there, or turn it into symbolism or something. That reminds me. Why are you going to see Sai again? I don’t think I caught your answer earlier.” ‘Shit… dug my own grave.’ Sakura drank the rest of her dragon fruit cocktail and held up a hand to decline the bartender’s offer of another. She would be leaving soon after all. Drunk driving is a no no boys and girls. “Well I kind of want to see it, the painting that is.” She shoved his foot off her lap and turned away from his suspicious look, not wanting to make direct eye contact. “You are a pervert, aren’t you?” Sakura’s face erupted into flame and she swiveled her chair so she could firmly slap a hand over his too loud voice. “Shhhh. First of all I am not a pervert, Sai is. Second there is no way I would go out of my way to see a body I dress and undress repeatedly.” Naruto’s eyes narrowed; something about the way she said that made him feel as if she were implying he wasn’t sexy. “Though I do know there is a difference of circumstances.” She added stopping his complaint in its tracks. “Then why are you going?” He mumbled from behind her hand that tasted oddly like salt and dragon fruit. “Aren’t you at all interested in what he looks like?” She asked removing her hand from his mouth after she noticed a few people whispering about her. Unlike Naruto she wasn’t fond of being the center of attention, which was hard to avoid when you were sitting next to the human equivalent of the sun. “Sakura we see Sai almost everyday. He really doesn’t look that different out of school aside from a few more splatters on his clothes.” “Not him stupid. I meant his roommate. What do we even know about him aside from the fact they have known each other forever and he may be a potential serial killer. Doesn’t that bother you? He has known our best friend longer than we have and is so close yet we have never met him.” Naruto shook his head at her; she was acting as if his lack of appearances was the biggest conspiracy sense area 51, yet she flew right on by the very likely chance of him being a murderer. “Hmm…” he nodded thoughtfully, paused, and then nodded some more before turning to her and saying. “I didn’t know you had a thing for potential murderers, damn I went about this the wrong way.” He snapped his fingers like a man who had lost a bet and honestly he felt like one two. How was he supposed to know that was her thing, she seemed comfortable enough with the idea, enough to go over to a house where Sai was her only source of protection. “Naruto!” She slapped his arm spinning him and his chair with inhuman force. He grinned wickedly at her when his chair slowed to a stop facing her. “What? You want to check out a man we know to be violent. Apparently the nice guy act was a waste of my time.” “I don’t want to date him. He’s probably a creeper being Sai’s childhood friend and all, but I’m still kind of curious. And besides after you hang out over there, for however long Sai is kidnapping you, than I’ll be the only one who doesn’t know what the guy looks like.” She had a point. But didn’t this mean that now he would be the last to meet him? Figures…. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sasuke frowned at the door as something behind it continued to knock, and knock, and knock. At first the knocks were quite and almost shy, but now they were growing obnoxiously persistent and Sasuke feared the door would break under the stranger’s force. He slid his chair under the doorknob in front of him and yelled for the person behind the other door to shut the hell up and that he would be there in a minute. It seemed to work because the pounding stopped. He wrenched the door open and froze in place, shocked by what he was seeing. ‘Is that color real?’ He thought as he looked over the neon sign pink hair. Wow he only knew the girl for two seconds and she was already pissing him off. The girl stared up at him fidgeting under his gaze. Apparently she had gotten more than she expected when Sasuke was the one to open the door. Because she couldn’t quite figure out where to look. Strong shoulders, muscular arms, porcelain skin, striking black hair with an interesting style that she prayed was natural or else she’d have to doubt his appeal, and the darkest obsidian eyes she had ever seen. They put Sai’s emotionless orbs too shame and she was lost the moment they locked onto her green ones, no longer worrying about where to look to avoid being caught drooling. Sasuke smirked. Apparently he still had it no matter how insecure a certain blond made him feel. Though the girl might have mistaken that smirk for something other than his smug victory, because she was now blushing and attempting to talk. It was verging on pathetic so Sasuke decided to give her a hand, nicely. “What do you want?” Ok, not so nicely. Sasuke stood in wait for a while and was about to shut the door on her when she spoke up. “Um, I’m here to see Sai. Is he here?” Sasuke was actually impressed by how quickly she collected herself; at least she wasn’t as mindless as all the other girls who would stand there till he slammed the door in their faces before the erupted into a fit of fan girl screams. It was a daily thing at one point and for weeks after he could still hear their screams in his sleep or when the apartment was too quiet. To say it irritated him would be a gross understatement and to say he filed hundreds of restraining orders would be another. “No. I’m sorry he’s out getting…” He was going to come up with a very clever story about how Sai had spilt paint all over an expensive suit and how now he had to run to the laundry mat, but he was rudely interrupted by some minor muffled screams and banging. ‘Well damn, there goes that plan.’ “Is-is that Sai?” she tried to peer over the taller man’s shoulder but he moved slightly with each attempt, blocking any opening she could find. Finally her well managed temper kicked in, and with normal female strength she gently pushed him aside. He kindly moved for her and she made her way into the foreign apartment to search for her friend. Or at least that’s how she would tell it when Naruto asked. Sasuke glared at the pink haired hulk from a wall that had caught him and prevented a would be painful fall. Yeah he was pretty sure he didn’t like her. “I’m sorry I seem to be out of date on my manners. Is it common to just barge into a man’s apartment?” He sneered following the rampaging woman who had locked onto an oddly barricaded closet door. The pinket ignored him and wrenched the door open releasing a bound Sai who fell to the floor in front of her like a neatly tied present. She helped her friend up and turned to the taller raven with a glare that Sasuke had to admit was slightly intimidating. Not like he would ever admit it out loud though, he was too busy glaring back at her. “Is tying people up part of your manners? If so I’m glad times have changed.” She growled back at the man who was attempting to subdue her anger with his own. She worked under Tsunade for years, there was no way a guy like him was scarier than her. Sasuke grinned at the fuming woman stopping her brave act. Those fangirls were useful for one thing; he got a lot of practice on how to use his looks. “Oh look you found him.” Sasuke looked at Sai and his grin grew wicked and Sakura wondered if she should have listened to Naruto. Being alone with this guy may actually be dangerous, and sure Sai was there but come on a moment ago he was locked in a closet. “It seems your business here is over.” She took a step back and gulped. Her back hit the wall and she looked up when she heard something shift above her. It was the painting. Her head had nudged it and Naruto was now looking straight down at her with a detached look as if saying “I told you so, now look what happened.” But despite the cold eyes the familiar face reassured her and she lit up, turning around to adjust her falling friend, ignoring the menacing aura behind her. “What do you think you’re doing?” Sasuke growled watching her hands as they touched his painting. She ignored the territorial growl and rehung the painting of her best friend. “Sai… he’s beautiful.” She said in a daze. The blond was captivating and stole all of her attention from the others around her. His expression was so raw and real, something he would never show easily no matter how close they all were. It was a look she both loved and hated, but the playful pose soothed her. It made her feel like the sadness in his face was captured in the fleeting moment of hurt from a friendly insult rather than the permanent scar the boy bore. The painting was both heart wrenching and painfully beautiful. And she was close to drooling over a body she had known both bare and clothed for years now. She wanted to stare at it forever. But she was interrupted. Sasuke grabbed her shoulder and twirled her around to face him, startling here from her trance. “Why are you still here?” The man looked like a beast whose castle she had accidently trespassed on and she kind of wanted to look around for a wilting rose beneath a glass case, or perhaps she was already staring at it? “You found who you were looking for now either leave or get out of my part of the apartment.” Sakura held her hands up in defense against the beautiful beast and grabbed her friend, hauling him into his room and locking his door. ‘What the hell was that about?’ she panted heavily behind the solid door, feeling safe with her back pressed against the heavy wooden frame. “Is he always like that?” She asked her equally shocked friend who until then was watching the scene before him in bewilderment. “No… never.” She doubted it, but the look on his face assured her he was telling the truth. “He’s still kind of hot though.” She laughed and Sai stared at her in confusion. Yet another thing about woman he would never understand, or perhaps it was all people and not just her. The fan base his demonic friend had accumulated validated the later. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sasuke breathed a sigh of relief before fixing his painting so it appeared as if it had never been moved. He took a step back with a slight smile reserved only for the blond and “hmmed” peacefully. He stood there in the middle of the room like that for a moment until his eyes widened in panic. What the hell was he doing? He shook his head riding himself of all thoughts dealing with the painting, before storming off to the kitchen for tea. Tea would clear his mind of this nonsense. Tea would bring him back to rationality. But the tea only lasted so long. When his cup was empty he was forced to look at something else. He tried to distract himself with the news, but commercials made that difficult as well. Even when reading a magazine he could feel his eyes gravitating towards his sun. And eventually he gave up, tossing the newspaper aside, and turning off the TV to stare at the dejected male he no longer dared to try to remove from his life. ‘What the hell is wrong with me?’ he groaned, sliding a hand across his face while at the same time making sure it never obstructed his view of his blond. Something was definitely wrong with him. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> AN: So there it is. I promised that I would update if a few people reviewed. But remember my darlings; chapter three requires a bit more encouragement. Especially since I may be nearing serious writer’s block right now. Well I appreciate all who have read this so far and I especially love you all who reviewed. I hope you all are enjoying it so far. Till next time hunnies. Oh by the way if you couldn’t tell, I absolutely love Beauty and the Beast. But no this will not be a parody, I just happen to love allusions. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
