Hi, me again. I am having loads of fun finally getting a story onto paper. I know it’s moving slowly right now, but I promise that will change soon. As a newbie, I have no idea if I am somewhat on the correct path. So… Please review! The suspense is killing me J
Chapter Two: Encounter
Gaara pulled his blood red, late model Eclipse behind Hinata’s truck, after returning from the café following their “talk.”
“Yo?” he asked, questioning the missing letters on her tailgate. The Toyota now greeted any behind it.
“Hmmm? Oh, yeah, the truck,” face flushing with embarrassment over the run down thing she was forced to drive. “My car had a flat and I didn’t want to be late so I borrowed…..” She trailed off. Hinata wasn’t very good at lying and Gaara wasn’t fooled so easily, and she knew it, “Sorry.”
He gave her a look that showed he was upset that she would lie to him, and shook his head.
“Moving on…. I want to make this very clear on what I expect from you. I promised Neji I would look after you, so no more hiding. If you do not call me weekly, and come to see me monthly, then I will be forced into removing you from his home. You will come stay with us and will not have a say in this matter. If this is the only way I will be able to ensure you are safe and protected, then it is something I am willing to do. If your boyfriend has any problems with this arrangement, then I will be happy to discuss it with him. Understood?”
Hinata nodded. She hated being talk to as a child, but she understood the reason on why. She had been MIA for the last year. Living across the boarder, in Yakuza territory, with her boyfriend, put her out of reach. Gaara didn’t even have the intel to know where she lived, nor the ability to go see her.
Gaara was very protective of her and she knew he wouldn’t put up with a vanishing act again. It had taken her an hour of pleading just to get him to agree to let her return home, only conceding after she promised to stay connected and follow his rules.
“And,” he continued, “I need your phone number and address.” Passing her his cell phone he instructed, “Program it in here.”
“What?” she perked up and shot him a look of fear. “What for? You can’t go there. Light doesn’t like people in his house that he didn’t invite.” Realizing that was the wrong excuse to keep him away from the house, she added, “And something could happen if you go to the side. Promise me you won’t?”
“Absolutely not. And you will give me what I ask for. I will not let you leave without the means to retrieve you.” She sent him a look of sheer panic, begging for a compromise, and he obliged, “I promise not to go there if you stay true to your word.”
Deciding this way probably the best deal she was going to get from him, she took the phone. After fiddling with it for a few minutes she hit the
save button. “There, it’s all done.” She reluctantly handed back the phone.
After inspecting the new info, he nodded and slipped the phone into his pocket.
Leaving the engine running, Gaara got out of the car and walked around to her side. Opening the door he took her hand in his and pulled her out. Still holding her hand, he walked her to the “yo” truck, grabbed the handle and jerked it open.
Just as he was ready to let her hand go, she pulled him into a tender good-bye hug. “This was really nice. I missed you.”
“Don’t disappear for so long next time.” He smirked, “Or I will find you.” Pleased with himself knowing that was no longer an empty threat, he released her as she climbed behind the driver’s seat. “You should get going, it’s getting late.”
“Good-bye, Gaara. Take care of yourself.”
He stood and watch as the truck started and pulled away, follow by her ivory hand waiving good bye out the window as she turned the corner.
Assured she was gone, he grabbed his phone and flipped it open. In a split second it was dialed, ringing and to his ear.
“Naruto, it’s me. Do you still have your sight on him?” A twisted smile curled over his lips as he continued, “Good, wait for him to head home. Hinata should be well past that area by then. I don’t want her anywhere near this. Don’t fuck it up, got it? ….. Ok, call me when it’s over.” A satisfied sigh escaped his lips, as he flipped the phone closed and slipped it back into his pocket. Soon, it will begin.
The rain had slow to a sprinkle as Hinata she ran from Hollywood Hills Cleaner to her truck. She barely made it to her boyfriend’s favorite dry cleaners, to retrieve the clothes she had left with them this morning. Her talk with Gaara took longer then she thought and put her behind schedule. Even though Light was out of town on business the next two days, she still had to make sure her chores were done, which included the laundry.
She laid the grey Ralph Lauren suit, and two pairs of True Religion blue jeans, over the passenger seat, careful not to crease them.
Pleased at herself that she’d caught the owner, a sweet older lady that reminded Hinata of her grandmother, as she was locking up. To come all the way back here tomorrow would have been quite the inconvenience. She would have to remember to bring Mrs. Sen some cookies for letting her pick up the order.
It took her a few seconds to find the headlight switch and turn it on. Even though she’d owned this truck for nine months, she had never driven it at night before. It took a second to adjust to the dark world, and gather her bearings. Sliding the shifter into drive, she pulled out onto the street.
The water on the road glistened as her lights hit it. Spilt into an array of colors as they danced on the glossy black top. She stared in amazement. The whole thing seemed some foreign yet beautiful. And she was amazed in herself for getting such joy out of something so simple. Had she really forgotten what water on dark pavement looked like? It was simply marvelous.
She turned onto the road heading into The Canyon. The world became more private there. Overly large homes hid peacefully, set back behind tall evergreens, and deep landscaping. Spaced out far enough from each other, so being intruded upon by neighbors wasn’t a problem. Many successful people that valued their privacy resided here.
Her boyfriend quite enjoyed leaving here. Taking twenty miles of twisting roads to come to Yagami Estates, Light’s family home was one of the deepest one in The Canyon. It was beautiful there, but extremely isolated.
After ten minutes of twisting up the slight hill, something red caught her eye up ahead. A taillight? It was still too far away to clearly make out, but it looked odd. It was on the wrong side of the road. Her heart jumped a beat as realization dawned on her. It was a crash. Someone must have had an accident from the rain. She held her breath in fear of what she might find.
She slowed the truck as she came to a Ferrari slammed into a tree on the left side on the road facing the same direction as her. It had a large branch from the assaulted evergreen imbedded in the hood, and two flat tires. It was pure white except for the long, smeared, strikes of orange paint down the passenger side.
Someone in a an orange car hit him. Her mind raced as she searched around for another car, finding nothing. Where is it?
Hinata stopped the truck and rolled down her window to inspect the situation better. Steam rose from the hood and the radio blared a guitar solo from a heavy metal band.
She knew that music. She had heard it several times while working in the garden, coming from a white blur as it speed their house. She didn’t see many cars pass the house, and they seemed to stick out. Meaning it belongs to one of the few houses that resided deeper then Yagami Estate.
She focused on the driver seat, no one was there.
Where is he? Did the orange car take the driver to the hospital?
That idea made her sigh in relief. It was for the best, she couldn’t bring herself to leave someone out here hurting, but Light wouldn’t like her getting involved.
She slowly pulled away, still peering at the car to make certain no one was around. Satisfied there wasn’t, she left the Ferrari in her rear view and turned the next corner.
Bang! Her foot slammed on the brakes, as the all too familiar sound of a 9mm ran through her. Tires squealed to a stop as her lights beamed over a party of four men, and one orange Nissan.
She froze, unable to think, unable to move. Completely helpless, she watched as a young man with spiky blonde hair, fell to the ground.
