Chapter: Sai

Sai slowly rose from the ground and placed a hand to his pounding head. He couldn’t remember what had happened, the only memory he had was watching the eyes open and then it was blank. He opened his eyes and saw buildings on fire, dead bodies littering the ground, and a woman being raped in the distance. All the noise seemed to be far away, muffled, and he couldn’t understand why.

Closing his eyes again he rose to his feet intending to go help the woman, only when he opened them again she was lifeless, the culprit gone, and he turned away from her spread open abused and wounded body with the hollow eyes. Bile rising in his throat, he swallowed thickly.

He started to run even with his muscles aching, wondering if anyone had survived, was anyone still like he was, normal. His stomach gave an ugly twist inside as he came upon more and more bodies, some in the throws of seizures blood dripping down from their ears and sometimes even their eyes. Thankful for the time being that he couldn’t hear the screams of pain as well as he should have. Sai didn’t have time to help those who seemed lost, he kept his eyes peeled for those who looked fine, and hoped for the best. He didn’t want to be the only one.

****
He skid to a stop when a cry of a young girl rose over the sounds of chaos all around. His heart was pounding as the realization of what was happening to her became very clear. He thought about leaving for a moment, only to shake his head. He could not leave a child to be devoured by a monster, even if said monster had been her father once.

Turning he ran in the direction of the cry and slammed open a door to find a small child no more than ten being spread open by a large man. Pulling his blade from the scabbard he quickly thrust it up into the man’s back at an upward angle so not to have the dead man’s weight fall on the abused girl. Pulling the body away carefully, as not to hurt her more, he let it drop to the floor. Wiping his blade he turned back to the little child taking in the blood that stained the bed from between her legs.

Carefully he pulled a blanket over the sobbing child quietly wrapping it around her. He shook his head when he pushed back blond curls and saw her face brutalized as well. It was never good for a child to witness the darker side of man. She winced when his finger touch a particularly gruesome bruise.

“I’m going to take you to safety. Do you trust me to?” He whispered to her.

Green eyes opened as well as they could to look him over. Sai realized he probably didn’t look much better for wear. He had woken up face first in the dirt with blood on the ground. Slowly she nodded and reached out a shaky hand for him. Gently he picked her up and placed her against his chest her head on his right shoulder. The girl continued to sob into his shoulder and small arms hung on to him desperately.

“Do not worry, I know someone who can heal you.” He told her, though he wasn’t sure if the one he spoke of was still herself.

He rounded a corner, heading for the Hokage tower that burned in the distance, only to skid to a stop as several men turned to stare at him hungrily. He closed his eyes to block the image of them standing around nude with erect penises and women’s body’s strewn across the ground in different states of ripped dress and death. The little girl in his arms started to shake and her crying renewed as fear began to grip her once more.

Slowly he opened his eyes and pulled a scroll from his small pack unfurling it and drawing on it while it was still in mid air. Brining his hands into the familiar seal he spoke the words that were like second nature and a two large dragon cats appeared. The two paper and ink creature ran at the men who charged.

“I need you to stand.” He told the girl.

Once she nodded he placed her behind him and drew more upon his paper. Making the seal again and speaking the words mice appeared by the dozens scampering to over power on man after another. The men, who had become monsters, cried out as hundreds of mice ripped into their flesh. Most people did not realize that Sai could do this with his art, did not realize he was this good.

He glanced at the littler girl who covered her face with the blanket to stop from seeing all the blood and body parts being ripped into. It was a good thing she was smart enough to do that, he didn’t really want her innocence wrecked anymore than it had. Turning back to the scroll of paper he drew his bird and called it forth from the paper as he grabbed the girl and jumped on its back.

The bird faltered unused to the added weight but once he gave it a little more chakra it flew like it normally did. The young girl let out a cry of surprise and clung to him tighter and he wrapped a reassuring arm around her. Directing his papered beast towards the tower he made continued on. As loath as he was to take the air, for there could be more survivors, he could not in good conscience allow the girl to witness anymore of this travesty.

Spotting a familiar shock of pink hair he angled the bird down and towards the woman. As she was busy healing Ino he assumed the woman was normal. Landing a few feet away he was not surprised when Sakura swung a fist at him, which he easily missed, but barely.

“Sakura.” he stated calmly.

The pink haired woman registered that he was as he should be and relaxed minutely. Then she took in the young girls appearance and she frowned. Sai nodded his head to confirm her thoughts he saw flash through her eyes. Her green eyes saddened and she reached out her arms for the young child.

“This is the person I told you about.” Sai explained to the girl who had tightened her hold about his neck.

“Hey sweet heart, can I see you? That way I can heal some of those painful cuts.” Sakura cooed softly.

Reluctantly the girl let go and went to Sakura, to this Sai felt a small amount of relief. He looked back over his shoulder to look out over the burning chaos that had become the village. There could still be others that he could save, it was what Naruto would have done.

“You’re going back out there.” it was a stated fact not a question.

Sai looked over at Ino who slowly rose to her feet and nodded. Sakura placed the little girl on the ground and began to heal her face a concentrated look on her face. He could tell though she did not like the idea of him leaving.

“It’s absolute chaos Sai.” Sakura whispered.

“You want me to leave fellow shunobi and possible innocents to die?”

The pink haired woman winced, and stopped what she was doing momentarily to look up at him. Slowly she stood and walked over to him placing her hands to either side of his face green light emitting from them. Under her chakra he could feel the cut on his head stitch itself back together.

“Just,” she paused dropping her hands. “Just be careful Sai.”

“Yeah ya freak and bring back more friends.” Ino added one hand fisted and placed on her hip.

Sai nodded to them both before turning and jumping off the edge of Hokage Mountain landing on his new bird and flying off back towards the village.

Sai dropped silently to ground and stayed crouched down surveying the area around him bathed in shades of red. Listening carefully for even the slightest sound over the roaring fires he quickly made his way, staying close low to ground, to the next burning building. He was very wiry, as the moment he’d landed the hairs on his neck and arms stood on end. Something, or someone was very close, and highly dangerous.

Sai leapt out of the way as a large mass of insects came crashing down into him like a fist. He quickly looked around while trying to find the source of the insects and spotted Shino’s father. Sai knew to be the honorable man only because he still had the small strap of the coat on his right side. Abarames were hard to distinguish but there was always one small detail different about each individuals dress.

Jumping out of the way again he landed only to side step barely fast enough to miss being hit by another swarm of bugs. If even one damn bug hit him he was done for, he knew from Shino that the bugs were highly toxic once they reached a certain level. Only the best of the best were able to wield the poisonous bugs. It was a shame that the man was now no longer himself.

Once again Sai would have to use a technique that was otherwise a secret. As the bugs came at him again he sent the scroll spinning around him in a twirl of paper as he quickly drew fire seals on the spinning parchment. Easily he went over the seals with his hands his paint brush in his mouth, before he placed his hands in front of him flat. The insects around him were set on fire as small ink balls were set aflame and sent flying from the twirling fire.

The older Abarame easily deflected it sacrificing his insects, but wisely stepped back into the shadows like a wolf in wait. Reaching up above him caught hold of the scroll the paper immediately snapping back into place. Quickly he pushed his equipment back into his satchel before taking off running down the road. He was sure that he’d seen Hinata holding the younger bug nin.

Pulling his blade out he easily jumped the civilian before turning around and slicing her across her throat before continuing on his way. The village people were easily enough dealt with, but judging by the man he had just fought fellow ninja still retained a certain level of intelligence. Beasts with intelligence was never a good thing especially when they were rabid.

Sliding to halt outside the Hyuuga compound his eyes scanned the clearing and there he spotted Hinata sobbing over Shino her shirt ripped and her pants gone. Unsure of what to expect he sheathed his small sword and slowly made his way over to the woman. A movement to his right had him turning quickly and pulling his scroll out only to stop and stare at the large white dog over Kiba’s bloodied body.

Sai relaxed as the scene slowly unfolded in his mind, he crouched down and beckoned the dog to him. Slowly the large animal made his way over head bent and tail between his legs. Sai took in the dried blood on the otherwise white dog and sighed.

“Good dog.” He whispered and gave the scruffy dog a good rough pet.

Standing he turned back to the Hyuuga woman, who had stopped crying, but now sat silently over the man in her arms. Sai approached carefully, if the Hyuuga had turned there would be trouble. She looked up at him as if she had finally noticed someone else was there. Sai relaxed, she was still herself. Walking closer he inspected the bug nin, severe claw marks were dug into his back revealing torn muscle and sinew. Dark eyes took in the amount of blood around the man and staining Hinata. The man could live but only if he got him to Sakura quickly.

“He is not crazy?” Sai asked to be sure.

Hinata shook her head.

“Only Kiba.”

She nodded glancing over at the body of her once friend before another sobbed escaped. Sai sighed, this was going to be difficult. He glanced over at the Hyuuga compound and wondered if anyone in there had gone crazy, were in the process of it, or just simply dead. He hoped that if there was anyone in there that they were dead unless otherwise unaffected by the red eyes on the moon.

“Can you move?”

“Yes.” She whispered.

He looked back over at the dog and signaled him to come closer with his head. The dog came closer and laid down on the ground when Sai started to pull Shino’s body to him. Akamaru was a very good dog, Kiba had trained him well.

“We must hurry, the Abarame are heading this way, either looking for Shino, or looking for you as you are female.” He stated calmly.

Akamaru stood up and looked to him for guidance on what next to do. Sai looked to Hinata who also stood up while looking to him. It was strange to be in charge, but he knew he could handle it. He looked at Hinata and she nodded as she understood what he was asking. Slowly the veins on her temples came up as she looked around the area before she pointed to the left.

“Keep your eyes activated if you can. Its very dangerous.”

“Right.” She answered while she picked up her ripped pants and made a make shift skirt out of them.

He could tell she wasn’t overly comfortable with this but she didn’t have much choice. She tied the knot firmly on her left side and then tied a not on the front of her shirt to keep her breasts hidden. Sai looked to the left where she had indicated scanning the area before looking back over his shoulder as a sound alerted him at the same time Akamaru’s ears perked up.

“We must go.”

Akamaru growled his head lowering threateningly.

“Where are we headed?”

“Hokage mountain. Be aware of even insects.”

She nodded, he knew she didn’t fully understand why she had to keep a look out for even the smallest nat, but Hinata would follow orders. Sai had been amongst the chaos longer than she had, he knew she understood that much and thus would follow him with out question. Again the thought that someone would do so was a little disorienting.

Sai whipped out his scroll and four paintbrushes while turning around. Quickly he drew tigers and sent them pouncing towards the enemy. Thankfully it was just some villagers, but he knew other nin weren’t far behind. If the crazed nin were hunting in packs they would use this opportunity to get at him. The thought was sobering, and his face set into the hard lines of frown.

“Go now, get him to Sakura.”

Hinata nodded and ran off Akamaru following beside her. As expected he watched a swarm on insects rise from the canopy of the dark forest. Quickly he sent scrolls to flying about him painting the fire seal once more. This was going to be a hard fight, and he would be lucky to get out of it alive.
