Chapter 2
They travelled in silence for quite a while. Kakashi didn't bother to take his book out. Sakura knew he wasn't really reading it. Besides, it wouldn't do to be reading a book while on his...he paused.
He still hadn't gotten used to the idea. Their cover was to pose as a newly married couple on their honeymoon. Rumors of some new trouble in the port cities to the east had gotten back to Konoha. He would have thought that stories of their efforts there a few years ago would be enough to discourage anyone, but apparently not.
So, Tsunade had sent them out together to do some snooping. But Kakashi wasn't sure how well he could deal with pretending to be a newlywed with Sakura. Maybe, before he'd overheard her, he could simply shove his recent thoughts regarding her to the back of his mind.
And that was another thing to consider. How the heck was he going to tell her he'd heard? Should he? It didn't seem fair to know what he did. He couldn't un-hear it, of course, but what to do with it?
He glanced sideways at her now. They were moving the ninja way, swiftly through the trees. She seemed lost in her own thoughts and he could only guess at what they were.
Perhaps she wasn't thinking about him? Maybe he was just being a perverted old man. She could change her fantasy man every time she did that. That thought didn't sit well with him, so he shoved it aside.
As he considered these things, something else occurred to him. He had, of course, thought briefly about it, but had put it off. He couldn't any longer.
Why had Tsunade chosen him for this mission? This one? Any number of shinobi could have carried it out much easier than he, but Tsunade had specifically told him she wanted him for it. He didn't think it was because no one else could have handled it. Genma, Tenzou or any number of his fellow jonin could have done just as well.
He didn't think it was Sakura. They worked well together, no doubt, but that probably had more to do with his original position of teacher to her than anything else. No, that wasn't likely it, either. She worked well with any number of shinobi.
No, the more he thought about it, the more he thought that the exact makeup of this team was no mistake or idle assignment. And he found himself suddenly uncomfortable with what he was about to have to do.
He glanced sideways at her again, then went back to looking forward. How would she handle it? He remembered a time when she was young and Sasuke was still with them. They had tried everything they could think of. And, of course, he'd figured it out. He chuckled to himself at the memory.
Then he sighed. "Sakura." He said quietly.
She was listening for him. There was no other way she would have heard him otherwise. She turned her head and raised an eyebrow inquiringly.
He made a motion with his hand. "Let's call it a day." He looked up at the sun that had set.
She nodded and dropped from the trees. She looked around at the area they were in. It wasn't going to work to camp in, as it was too close to the road. Turning, she headed back a ways and found a more secluded spot.
She dropped her pack and went in search of wood. A few moments later, she returned and laid them aside. She arranged the wood, then pulled a collapsible bucket out of her pack and headed to the small stream she'd heard off to her right.
Kakashi dropped his own pack, then got the fire going. He pulled his pack aside, unhooked his bedroll and spread it out to sit on. Then he dug into his pack and pulled out a small container of rations and set it aside.
Sakura came back then, pulled a small pan out and set it on the side of the fire to warm water. She took out two small cups and some tea bags, fixed the tea and handed one cup to Kakashi before settling down. She dug her own rations out and leaned back against one of the trees to consider him.
"So. What did you want to talk about?" She asked him quietly.
He stared at her. "What makes you think I want to talk about anything?"
She smiled, then waved her hand. "It's still light out. You usually go much further."
He glanced down at his tea, took a sip and then met her eyes. He picked up his bowl and opened it, taking one out. Then, very deliberately, he pulled his mask down and popped the little ball into his mouth.
Sakura didn't blink. She couldn't think. Her brain registered on some level that she was now looking Kakashi full in the face. But it wasn't getting through to the conscious part of her. Her eyesight started to go fuzzy and she realized she wasn't breathing.
She sucked in some air and said, "Sensei?"
He smiled - just a small thing, a crook of one side of his mouth, and she wished he hadn't. It should be illegal. "You might want to stop calling me 'Sensei' if you're going to be...erm, 'married' to me."
She blinked again, then remembered to close her mouth. She cleared her throat. "Kakashi? Why are you showing me your face?" She shook her head, flustered. "I mean, it's beautiful, don't get me wrong...erm, handsome, yeah." Her mouth snapped closed.
His smiled widened. "I don't think I've ever been called that before." He chuckled and shook his head. "If we're going to be married, then don't you think you should know what I look like?"
She closed her eyes. It was the only defense she could come up with to battle that face. "I thought we weren't going to start that until we were closer to town?" She kept her eyes closed as she said it.
"Well, yes, but it still wouldn't do for you to be walking around with your eyes closed, would it?" There was a chuckle in his voice and she opened her eyes to glare at him.
Another mistake. She sighed. "Just...give me a minute." She closed her eyes again. In all her dreams, in all her fantasies about the man, she'd never had a clear picture of what she thought he'd look like. But even her vague thoughts didn't come close to how beautiful he was. She took a deep breath and expelled it, then opened her eyes one more time.
She leveled a look at him and stood up to go around the fire. She sat next to him and he turned to look at her fully. "Why?"
"That's a tale I'll get to another time." He said, and she smiled again.
She puzzled over that a second then smiled. "No, silly. I know...erm, um, I mean why did you choose this mission if you'd have to do this? It should have occurred to me, but I never even thought about it." She trailed off.
"That I'm not sure of. Tsunade only said it was imperative I was on this mission, but I suspect it was a way for her to force me to take it off." He shrugged one shoulder. " I really don't mind you seeing me and the rest of them will be strangers. Most people who know about me, remember the mask anyway."
He breathed a very small sigh of relief. He wasn't sure what he suspected, but Sakura's initial shock and then her quiet acceptance wasn't it. And 'beautiful'? That was a new one on him. She was watching his reaction now, and smiled at something she saw. He raised one eyebrow. "What?"
"I still find myself looking more at your one eye. But what about the sharingan?" She motioned toward his other eye. "We're going to have to lose the headbands."
He nodded. "I've got a patch. I thought it would make me look more dashing." He smiled again and she sucked in a breath. She was going to have to get over that.
She stared at him another minute, then reached up and just touched his cheek. She had no idea why she did it, but to touch him that way... she couldn't have stopped for all the medical knowledge in the world.
His reaction surprised her more than her initial touch. His look turned serious and he stared into her eyes. Then, very deliberately he leaned his head into her hand, just the tiniest bit. They sat that way a moment, then he seemed to shake himself mentally.
Whatever spell was on them was broken. "Well. Don't let the beautiful comment go to your head." She snickered at him as she went back to her pack, pulled out her bedroll and stretched out. "Are we taking watches?"
He considered her over the fire for another moment. "No need. I'm a light enough sleeper. Get some rest, Sakura. It's going to be a busy day tomorrow." He stretched out on his bedroll and laid back.
Sakura rolled onto her side and pretended to close her eyes. The mask was back in place for him to sleep, and she understood that it was very likely uncomfortable without it after so many years. Before she knew it, her eyes were drifting closed.
