Gentle Guidance: Chapter 2
The muffled sound of children’s laughter greeted Naruto as
he approached the school’s doors, putting a smile on the young counselor’s face
as he entered the building. After his
resolution to find a way to break through to the young Uchiha, Naruto was in a
much better mood than he had been in for weeks.
Passing through the crowded halls, in what had become a
routine, Naruto was forced to turn and reply to students who would call out a
greeting to him as they raced to get to class before the first bell rang. Every time that Naruto was faced with the
knowledge that his students truly liked him, a warm and fuzzy feeling shot
straight to his heart. The young
professional had love all around him. Maybe
it was greedy of him to want more?
Naruto collected his thoughts as he approached the well-sized
administrative office which housed the secretary’s desk, a smaller office for
the principal, and the faculty’s mailboxes.
Nodding to the other teachers filling the room, the whiskered man moved
toward the mandatory sign-in sheet that logged the employee’s hours.
“Good morning, Mr. Uzumaki,” the friendly secretary, Miss Shizune,
called to him from behind her desk.
“Morning, Ma’am,” he retuned brightly, a sparkle in his eye.
“You seem to be in an extra good mood today,” Shizune observed,
happy to see him looking better than he had appeared in a while. “Any particular reason?”
Before Naruto could answer, the principal hollered from her
office, “Did that brat finally get his act together and ask someone out?”
“Hey!” Naruto shrieked in outrage, sounding more like a
first grader complaining about someone being unfair, rather than the
accomplished adult that he was. Stomping
towards his boss’ office, Naruto poked his head around the open entryway. “I’ve said before that I don’t need anyone! I’m perfectly fine.”
“Right, right, right,” the middle-aged blonde woman dismissed
with a wave of her hand. In a long
suffering voice, she continued, “You just haven’t met anyone you connect
with. You are happy with your work. You, blah blah blah.” Slamming her hands down on her desk, she
barked, “I’ve heard it all before! You
just need to get out more, kid. You’re
too young to be a hermit.”
Seeing a protest forming on the tip of Naruto’s tongue, she
plowed on, “Really! All you do is work
and then go home. You never go out, and
when you do, it’s with Sakura and Lee.
They’re going to be getting married soon. You can’t be hanging around them all the
time.”
“I-“ Naruto started.
Holding up her hand, she forestalled any comments, “Yes, I
know you have other friends, who all work here, by the way, but you need
someone to keep you company on a more regular basis.”
Seeing his chance to finally get a word in, Naruto
exclaimed, “I’m fine! I don’t want some
meaningless-“
Bring! The shrill sound of the morning bell
interrupted.
“Oh, Naruto, you’re late,” she pointed out, eyes wide with
false innocence. “Better hurry on to
your office.” When he didn’t budge, she
went on, “No, no, no. Don’t just stand
there gaping, you need to go, you’ll have kids coming,” she reminded as she
moved from her seated position behind her desk and walked toward the younger
man. “We can talk later, Naruto,” she
smiled. And with that, she shut the door
in her youngest employee’s face, leaving a disbelieving Uzumaki staring at the
wooden barrier and a golden plaque reading “Principal Tsunade Sannin.”
“Ugh,” Naruto grunted with a pout.
“Sorry, Naruto,” Shizune said with an apologetic smile.
“Nah, it’s okay. I’m
not going to let her get me down with all that romance business. I’m perfectly happy with my life right now. I’m single and I can do whatever I want,
whenever I want,” the blond enthused. “Besides, I’m just too hot for anyone. It’s a public service I do, by keeping my
luscious body to myself,” Naruto boldly declared while striking an over-the-top
pose.
“It sure is a service, I don’t want to see any of that,”
Sakura snarked good naturedly as she entered the office and checked her
mailbox.
“Ah, you’re just jealous that I’m not going to be tied down
with some ball and chain,” Naruto shot back with a laugh.
“I’ll have you know that I can’t wait to be tied down by
Lee,” the pink-haired woman responded coyly.
“Ew! Sakura! My ears are going to start bleeding! This is a school, Sakura. What if the kids hear you?” the blond asked
with a horrified grimace plastered on his face.
Chuckling quietly, Sakura walked over to Naruto and lightly
shoved his shoulder with her own. “Grow
up, Mr. Uzumaki. You won’t be objecting
when it’s you in my position,” she noted.
“If it’s all the same to you, I’ll let you keep that, uh,
position with Lee. He’s nice and all,
but he’s not my type,” Naruto stated, disgusted frown still in place.
Seeing a chance at more match-making, the woman’s eyes lit up
as she asked, “So, what is your type, Naruto?”
Naruto’s mouth dropped open, as he became speechless.
Bring! The late bell chimed.
Letting out a breath, Naruto returned, “Well, it’s been nice
chatting and all, Sakura, but as Tsunade was saying, my first group of students
will be waiting for me soon, so I’ve got to go.
Later,” he called as he left the room and scurried toward his
office.
The blond let out a breath he hadn’t realized that he was
holding, as he reached his room. The
morning had started out so well for the guidance counselor, but as soon as he
got to work, he was bombarded by women who seemed to be going crazy. Maybe it was because of the approaching
wedding, or maybe he was just due another round of his friends’ favorite game
of “Let’s Help Naruto Be Happy in A Healthy Homosexual Relationship.” Sakura had been pestering him less than
usual due to her having to juggle work, Lee, and a fast approaching wedding
ceremony, but Tsunade had been entirely too nice lately. She hadn’t butted in about his personal
business since the beginning of term, and it was almost Christmas. With a sigh, the man realized her silence had
been too good to last; after all, she had been fussing over him ever since she
moved back to town ten years ago, and what would cause her to stop now?
The two blonds had been introduced years ago by Naruto’s
adoptive father. Apparently Tsunade had
known his parents while they were still alive, as her, and her husband, a
perverted old man named Jiraiya and
the school’s superintendent, had been mentors and friends to the Uzumakis who
were teachers at Konoha Academy, as well as alumni. When the younger couple died, along with
several other faculty members and students while coming back from a school
field trip, the older pair had resigned from their positions and taken a
sabbatical, travelling around the world.
Fourteen years later, they were ready to face their pasts, returning to
Konoha and eventually to the Academy, where they were welcomed back with open
arms, or so Naruto was told.
Shaking his head clear of such thoughts, the only surviving
Uzumaki unlocked his classroom and stepped inside, turning the light on as he
went. The walls were a bright, cheery
yellow and splashes of orange reflected a bit of Naruto’s personal touch. The floor was mostly an open space with a
warm cream carpet stretching the space.
Beanbag chairs were sporadically situated along the walls, as were a few
more traditional pieces of furniture. Tall
white bookcases held titles, like “Everyone has Feelings” and “It’s Okay to be
Angry.” Pictures of beaming students
standing with a grinning Naruto peppered his wooden desk. The atmosphere was welcoming, happy, and
used, but not cluttered. It had been a
sanctuary for more than one child when things grew difficult.
In preparation for his first group of students, Naruto sat
down at his desk and pulled up Sachio’s records on the computer. The child’s scheduled time was not until
after lunch. Naruto was in for a long
morning.
~~~
After having to console a student grieving over her lost
dog, calm down a pair of students who had been shoving each other during a game
of Red Rover gone terribly wrong, and work with his normal morning groups,
Naruto had all but forgotten to be anxious for the upcoming arrival of
Sachio.
The man had just dismissed his last group of the day and was
about to start his solo sessions. For
the first time since Naruto had initially begun counseling the Uchiha, he would
be working with the boy alone.
Originally, when the child had shown no real interest in Naruto, the
blond decided that he needed to see how the kid acted around other children,
and Naruto had moved him to a group time with some of the more outgoing
students; however, Sachio had remained withdrawn. Naruto
hoped that going back to one-on-one sessions would be better.
A short knock shocked Naruto into action, but before the
blond could open the door for his next appointment, it was already swinging
open as a small boy entered the room.
The child had hair so black that when the light hit it just right, it
seemed to shine violet. The locks hung just
below his chin in jagged waves that stuck out a bit on the child’s right side. Naruto couldn’t help but wonder if the kid
had done it that way in an attempt to be stylish, or if he was just unfortunate
enough that the unusual spiking was natural.
The kid’s eyes were a matching obsidian color, and currently assessing Naruto
calmly from behind a pair of black oval framed glasses.
“Ah, Sachio, how are you today?” Naruto greeted with his
brightest smile in place, pointing Sachio toward a comfy looking chair while
sitting down in the one facing it.
“Fine, Mr. Uzumaki” the child mumbled politely, yet
expressionlessly, as he took the offered seat.
Naruto was used to tears, anger, and sarcasm, but Sachio seemed to be
completely apathetic.
Optimistically, Naruto replied, “Well, it’s good that your
day has been alright so far. Is there anything
you want to talk about?”
“No, sir,” Sachio answered with no inflection.
“How’s your family?” Naruto asked earnestly.
“Good, sir,” the child responded. Naruto wondered how the kid really felt about
his home life. The boy had been used to
living at a boarding school, but Konoha Academy was a day school, so that meant
that someone was picking Sachio up every afternoon.
“You’re from Sound, right?
It must be hard moving to a new place and starting all over,” Naruto
remarked sympathetically. “Your old
school was a boarding school, wasn’t it?”
Eyes turned downward, Sachio answered, “Yes, sir.”
Did Naruto just see the kid react? Was Naruto on to something?
“So, Sachio,” Naruto continued, “you’re staying at home
now. Who picks you up every day?”
“Kakashi,” the eight-year old responded, eyes back on
Naruto.
“Is he a relative?” Naruto queried, interested in how much
he could get the boy to reveal.
“He’s my dad’s friend,” Sachio said matter-of-factly.
Inside, Naruto was jumping for joy. The boy just spoke 4 words, and one of them
was even a contraction! That meant he
had really said five! Things were going
well.
“Do you want to tell me more about him, Sachio?” Naruto asked
leaning forward in his chair.
The boy hesitated, and Naruto became afraid that he had
pushed a bit too far. Just when Naruto
opened his mouth to tell the other that he didn’t have to answer that, the
little one spoke.
“He’s my dad’s friend.
He’s nice,” the boy said quietly.
“He likes me even though I’m a kid.
He’s not like my mom and dad,” he finished, looking down at his hands
now clasped in his lap.
Naruto had to quickly school his features as his eyes had
grown wide and he was pretty sure that his mouth had been hanging open. The blond wasn’t sure why the child had
decided that he wanted to share more today, but Naruto was grateful that he
had.
“Your parents don’t like you?” Naruto asked in an equally
soft voice.
“No. I liked it
better when I was at boarding school. I
was never home, and I didn’t have to watch them pretend to care about me. Mom has her new life now, so I see her even
less, and Dad is always at work. When he’s
home he just asks me questions about my schoolwork and then ignores me,” he
explained, curling his hands into fists.
“What about Kakashi?”
Sachio looked up and smiled, the new expression causing Naruto
to gasp.
“He’s plays with me.
He’s really smart, and he stays in one of our extra rooms. He doesn’t act like he has to be around me
even though I know that’s his job,” the child explained.
“He’s from Sound, too, right?” Naruto queried, hoping to
keep the boy talking.
With a frown, Sachio went on, “Yeah. Ever since I was a baby, Mom wanted to do
other things more than play with me, and Dad never had time, so they bought me
Kakashi. He’s not my nanny, though, because
only babies have those; he’s my private trainer, and he’s teaching me how to be
a ninja. He’s really good at Karate,”
the boy beamed.
“Wow. He sounds
really nice, Sachio. Thank you for
telling me about him,” Naruto smiled. “Kakashi
actually reminds me of someone I know named Iruka. Iruka took care of me when I was close to
your age, and he’s really important to me.
I’m glad you have someone important to you, too. Still, I bet you would like to spend time
with your dad, right?” Naruto wondered aloud.
Sticking his chin up, Sachio answered, “No. Kakashi says Dad’s really important. He doesn’t need to waste his time with me.” The boy’s body language had become closed off
again. Sitting stiffly, the boy focused
his eyes on the wall beside Naruto.
“Well, Sachio, I don’t think you’re a waste of time, Kakashi
obviously doesn’t, and I have a feeling that your father doesn’t either,”
Naruto said sincerely. Not giving the
boy a chance to deny the claim, Naruto continued, “It’s about time for you to
go back to class. I’ll see you in a
couple of days, alright Sachio?”
“Yes, Mr. Uzumaki,” the student answered, getting up and
moving towards the exit.
Naruto opened the door for the boy, but right when the child
started to exit, Naruto clapped him on the shoulder with a, “Later, kid,” and a
wide grin. A small upturn of the lips
was the boy’s reply.
As Naruto shut the door behind the retreating figure, he
couldn’t help but let out a loud “Whoop!”
He had made a breakthrough. Now
it was time to have a little chat with Mr.
Uchiha.
