I am horrified at how long it took

flame me for this oversight. I deserve it. I have no excuse.

Sasuke stared at the boxes piled neatly
in front of his small closet. He'd unpack them later. Right now he
simply wanted to hide beneath his coverlet and think. Naruto was
down the hall, visiting with friends. No doubt that Sakura girl was
with him and when he returned... Sasuke shuddered at the thought of
little friendly get-togethers in this room. Or worse, friendly
relations. But chances were
good the visiting would continue until late in the evening. He could
but hope as his mind was filled with the days activities and, to
Sasuke's mind, atrocities.
He'd met his
brother by the fountain after his little observation earlier that
afternoon. Itachi had listened intently when he'd spoken of his
“concern” over what he'd seen and Sasuke had been sure
his overprotective brother would rush to drag him back home. He'd
been mildly irritated to see his elder sibling simply smile and tell
him not to worry that everything would be fine and even more
irritated when Itachi had scolded him for spying. This from the man
that spied for a living on a number of occasions. And so Naruto had
come down fifteen minutes later with a smile that looked a little
tired around the edges though no less bright and they'd all gone to
lunch.
The deli had been
small and clean, the food simple but wonderful and Sasuke tucked the
name and directions away in the back of his mind while he glared at
his brother and obnoxiously chipper roommate as they talked. The
conversation revolved around family and friends and other interests
that Sasuke tried to tuned out as he took small bites of his tuna
salad sandwich. He did learned that he and Naruto were from the same
home city of Konoha though from different neighborhoods and Naruto's
father and mother still lived in the small house he'd grown up in. He
also caught something about the blonds half-brother and his home in
Oto just on the outskirts of town though he'd been distracted as a
group of students passed and, calling loudly to those they passed,
waved a fraternity banner in their wake. Sasuke wasn't aware he'd
finished not only his sandwich but his chips and water as well until
Itachi, eyes wide, smiled at his empty plate in obvious pleasure.
“Are you
feeling alright?”
Sasuke, pulled from
his musings, grunted in answer and tucked the pillow a little tighter
beneath his head. Obviously the gathering two doors down was over
and now he would be expected to carry on a conversation. He wasn't
in the mood.
“The guys are
having a little get together this evening. So the freshmen and any
new residents can get acquainted.”
And the entire
floor would be watching him. Trying to learn all the little details
of his life under the guise of fostering friendship.
“It's in the
commons. Downstairs. The whole dorm's invited.”
So, everything he
was just thinking multiplied by a few hundred. Sasuke tried and
failed to suppress the shiver running along his spine.
“I told them
we weren't coming.”
The
shiver tripled in intensity and Sasuke rolled to face his roommate in
an effort to hide what now looked less of a shiver and more a
convulsion. Naruto's eyes seemed larger than he remembered only a
few hours ago, a little more sunken. The low light in the room cast
strange shadows on his skin, making it look more yellow than honey
gold. Sasuke settled on his side, pillow once again tucked firmly
beneath his head and fought down the panic at the thought of spending
hours alone in this room with this man. He'd be doing it every night
for the next 16 weeks, tonight would make no difference. Only, he'd
hoped to be asleep before Naruto returned. He had medication ready
and the moment the clock struck ten he had intended to take it and
sleep until Sunday mornings rays shown through the slate in his
window shades, confident his roommate would be visiting down the hall
until much later. He'd seemed friendly with everyone on their return
to the room so it was a logical conclusion there would be late night
visiting on Naruto's part. He firmly refused to recognize the fact
that they could have all congregated here. And now...
The blond rubbed
the back of his head with his hand, a gesture Sasuke was beginning to
recognize as a nervous gesture. “It's been a long day and the
ride in was really exhausting.” Sasuke just watched him. “I
have to run out now. Check on a friend but I'll be back. You know,
for dinner. If you want you can come with me since you don't
know...”
Sasuke listened to
Naruto's odd excuses and explanations and wondered what he was on.
He'd not had a parent in Narcotics for a while but, still, he didn't
act like any drug addict Sasuke had ever seen. There were sure to be
any number of variations on crack and marijuana out there. Must be
something new.
“Gaara's a
little strange but he's a good guy. You'd probably get along great
with him.” Naruto turned his back to lean into the drawer
beneath his bed. “You two seem to have some similar qualities.”
Sasuke's eyes
narrowed as he stared a hole in that orange shirt. He had missed
some of the that sentence but the last comment had sounded very
mocking. Watching the twist of dark shorts over tan legs and the
subtle stiffening of muscles, he was sure the rebuke in the comment
hadn't been his imagination. He shifted to his elbow, propping his
head on his open palm. “Like what?” It was soft and
monotone with just a hint of irritation.
Naruto's back
curved slowly up and a towel flew casually over his shoulder. He
looked over his shoulder and some of Sasuke's irritation turned to
trepidation at the wicked gleam in his one visible, very blue eye.
“Oh, I don't know.” Naruto turned those mischievously
gleaming eyes on him and Sasuke momentarily reconsidered his last
request. But he didn't get a chance as the blond continued. “He's
quiet, pale, and obsessive. He slouches horribly and sneers when he
thinks no one is looking.” Sasuke's eyes widened slightly.
“He's cold bordering on frigid unless he's comfortable with you
and he has serious anxiety issues.”
Sasuke was now
sitting on the edge of his bed, blinking and trying to decide if he
should be angry over the frigid comment or curious how he knew about
the anxiety disorder.. Damn Itachi and his big mouth. “I...”
Naruto held up his
hand and turned the rest of his body toward the Sasuke. “Don't
blame your brother. If you don't want people in this dorm to know
your business, don't leave it laying around.” His eyes cut to
the desk then back to the bed.
Sasuke glanced at
his desk and winced when he saw the Valium in plain site next to his
computer. He looked down and away before this pain in his ass could
read another expression on his face. The idiot read him far too well
but no one in his family had ever riled him so easily. He'd have to
work on that.
“Look, if you
want to come with me, you're welcome to. I'm gonna take a shower.
I'll be out in a few. Just think about it.”
Dark eyes watched
the door long after it had closed. It had been a long time since
anyone other than the occasional, he mentally shuddered at the
imagery, fan-girl had asked him out. Okay, so Naruto wasn't asking
him out exactly but he was asking him to spend time outside of
obligatory dorm mate requirements with him. “Offering the
olive branch.”
Sighing heavily, he
dropped once more into the bed and turned back toward the tall stack
of boxes against the small closet. He thought of his closest friend.
His only friend really. Hours spent in silence at the stables had
cultivated a silent camaraderie that had sustained him through the
turbulent first years of intermediate education and on through high
school. And now that friend was miles away and Sasuke was stuck in a
stale dorm room with a blond drug addict, a pink haired lesbian just
down the hall and being asked to visit his apparent emotional twin.
And to make matters worse...
“Oh hell, I
have to pee.” And there was only one bathroom on the floor.
Groaning him sat up
and swiveled, yet again, to settle his feet on the floor. A cheer
rang out from somewhere down the hall as he opened the door to his
room. Laughter echoed off the tiles and center blocks long after the
original sound had trickled away. Taking a fortifying breath he
closed the door and made his way toward the sound of the running
shower. He only hoped there were stalls in there and prayed to every
deity he could think of the halls bathroom wasn't co-ed as well.

Naruto sat, chin
resting on his fisted knuckles, elbows pressed into his thighs, and
stared at the bottle of tonic water on his desk. For the life of him
he couldn't remember how much his had to drink today. His nose
wrinkled and he tensed as a spasm ran through his left leg. He
watched the muscle twitch while taking deep even breaths and willing
his body to relax even as he gritted his teeth. “Come
oooooon.”
He'd returned from
his shower that afternoon to find the room empty. Taking that as a
“no” from his socially stunted roommate he'd dressed and
headed to the all girls dorm only two buildings away. The visit
hadn't gone well. Mostly because Gaara's permanently PMSing
girlfriend had been standing in the doorway the entire time, no doubt
waiting for a reason to kick him out in the most hostile way
possible. He'd left sooner than he'd intended simply to keep trouble
to a minimum.
The return walk had
seemed so much longer than it should have and by the time he'd made
the cafeteria all he wanted was a glass of water and a chair. He'd
settled for fish instead though he had to ask for some that hadn't
been fried and some green beans. He'd taken his time eating, saying
hello to those who passed, relaxing and enjoying being back among
friends. By the time he'd finished chatting up a pretty brunette
who'd just transferred in from Kumo University he was feeling better
and one phone number plus in his cell phone.
And now he sat on
his bed trying to massage the cramps from his leg and remember how
big the drink he'd had for lunch was. “Shit.”
“Is something
wrong?”
Naruto sat up
abruptly and tried not to wince at the strain it put on his back.
He'd not heard the door open or Sasuke's entrance.
“Nothing.
Just cramps. Did a little more walking than I'm used to this
afternoon.” Naruto watched Sasuke's eyes narrow but the brunet
said nothing.
He'd been in the
shower, Naruto noticed. His hair was still damp and the neck of his
blue shirt was dark with water. A shirt that was just this side of
too tight. The muscles of Sasuke's abdomen weren't defined but there
was no fat. His shoulders were wide and rounded off at the arm to
glide into long, pale arms. Again, the muscle wasn't defined but nor
was the guy fat.
“You find the
cafeteria alright?” Naruto asked only to receive a slight nod
and Sasuke's back.
And so he began his
inspection again, thankful for his ability to easily distract
himself, running his eyes over Sasuke's wide cloth covered back down
to the softly rounded curve of his ass. He wouldn't fill out a pair
of painters but there was just enough for the less discerning to
appreciate. Loose linen draped down his legs and hide any definition
there might be and with his back turned Naruto couldn't inspect his
feet. But he saw enough to know Sasuke was not a small guy. In
fact, if he were to stand straight instead of slouching, he was
almost two inches taller than the blond. So what caused a guy this
well built and attractive, and Naruto wasn't afraid to admit his
roommate was most definitely attractive, fold in on himself so
completely.
“So...”
Naruto piped up. Sasuke didn't turn. “Itachi said you're here
to be a vet.” Still no acknowledgement. “Any specialty
or just feeling it out?” He thought he heard a heavy
exhalation. “I'm in the medical field as well... well, I'll be
working with humans but still.” Nothing. Not even a twitch.
Naruto was silent
for a moment and Sasuke bent to open the drawer beneath his bed. The
beige linen stretched tight over his butt and road up his legs to
reveal thick-boned ankles. Naruto idly wondered what Sakura would
think of the view then remembered her comment this afternoon on the
elder Uchiha's long hair and delicate build. No, Sasuke wouldn't
hold much interest for her. Maybe Gaara's girlfriend would like him.
He wrangled the dark thought immediately. He'd never wish that
bitch on anyone.
“I don't know
what you were thinking about but stop it now.” Naruto blinked
at the soft words.
Sasuke had turned
and was now crossing his arms protectively over his chest. His
knuckles shown white where they gripped his arms and Naruto made a
promise to himself to find out why a man like Sasuke Uchiha, who had
a solid police family background and the scariest overprotective
brother next to Zabuza, was so skittish. He lifted his eyes to that
pale face and the sparkle of near black eyes tinted with a hint of
fear.
“I have no
idea what you're talking about.” Naruto tossed his hands up in
a arch above his head, pleased that the cramps in his legs had
stopped for the moment. “I was just so riveted by our
conversation I couldn't seem to stop staring.”
And just like that,
fear turned to irritation. Naruto smiled. I've got your number
now. It may take a few weeks but he'd crack that shell. It only
took a tiny fissure to topple a dam. He wondered if the dorm would
survive the flood.
“I have a
tour in the morning. I need to sleep.” Those black eyes
narrowed ever so slightly before Sasuke turned his back again.
“I'll try not
to snore to loudly.” Naruto valiantly held in his laughter as
those perfectly rounded shoulders stiffened and a very audible hiss
echoed around the room. Yeap, the flood would be catastrophic but oh
so fun to watch.
