Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto or any of the characters but boy do I wish I did! I do not make money from this. |
A/N: Hey again! Thanks to everyone who reviewed it really made my day and helped boost my confidence. Now I know that people like it so it makes me want to write more. ^.^
Kinai26 - I’m glad you enjoyed it! ^.^ Here’s the next chapter for you then, hope I didn’t keep you waiting.
Emmzy - Thanks for the compliment! The writing was very descriptive for this part, it does dull down I’m afraid but it’s all part of the writing style. It’s more descriptive when it’s a characters monologue or mental perception but more simple when many character get involved. It’s less confusing for me that way 0~0! I hope you like the rest.
Shadow - I’m so sorry for leaving you with a cliffy! Here’s the next instalment for you.
Nejislady - (Love your name btw.) Yes, I’m glad I wrote Itachi like that, it gives Sasuke a more personal side. Naruto is indeed Sasuke’s strong force at the moment and will continue to be throughout the story but Sasuke will most defiantly need Naruto later on. Without him, things would be very bad for our young Uchiha!
For all of you who are wondering about the title of the story, it’s Japanese for ‘responsibility’ or ‘responsibility towards another person’ (roughly translated anyway). I hope that doesn’t give too much away about the storyline!
Here we go!

‘Warm. I’m so warm. It’s not cold anymore.’ the raven thought as his mind slowly awoke.
“Well, he’s waking up at last. There’s nothing physically wrong with him. My guess is after finally getting his revenge, he no longer knew what to do.” The voice sounded familiar to Sasuke but it took him a while to place it. ‘It’s Tsunade-sama,’ he thought, ‘That must mean I’ve been returned to Konoha but this can’t be what Itachi meant. I’ll be killed.’ Confusion clouded his mind along with the strange fog that had yet to shift before he was broken out of his wonderings by a second voice.
“Hm, if you ask me he’s just unhinged. Didn’t Naruto say that he was screaming for his brother in his sleep? He’s just killed the guy and now he’s calling out for him. How messed up is that?” The voice sounded like it belonged to Kiba. ‘Annoying bastard!’ Sasuke thought, ‘but he mentioned Naruto.’ While he wasn’t particularly interested in hearing them discuss his mental state, any news they had about the blond that had haunted him for so long was welcome.
“Oi, oi. Don’t let Naruto hear you saying that. You know he believes that Sasuke is his best friend and how he gets when he’s defending people important to him, troublesome though it is.” Sasuke inwardly smirked as he recognised Nara Shikamaru speaking. He was glad to hear that Naruto still considered him to be his best friend after all that had happened and felt a smile tugging at his face. He had to concentrate so that the smile didn’t appear and alert the others to his listening presence.
“Ah, Naruto will do anything to protect those he loves but why he still loves this bastard is beyond me. I mean, come on! The prick tried to kill him, more than once! And yet that baka still chased after him, trying to get him to come back! Even Sakura’s wary of Uchiha now and she was one of the guys most obsessive fan girls!” the dog trainer exclaimed. A heart-felt sigh was admitted into the room, courtesy of Shikamaru.
“Ah, well Naruto believes in Sasuke. I’m gonna trust his judgement as he hasn’t been wrong yet.”
The sound of the door opening halted their conversation as, what seemed to Sasuke, to be the rest of the Rookie Nine along with Neji’s team entered the room. Their conversation swirled around him but he hardly listened. It was obvious to him from the stunted volume of the crowd that his blond dobe wasn’t among them and that was all he really card about. He caught snippets of the discussions that made him realise that Naruto was the only one left in Konoha who still believed in him but that the blond had enough influence over the others to sway them. It made the young genius wonder how strong his dobe must have gotten to be able to collect such a following, and whether that power and respect was enough to help secure him a future other than a death sentence. Tsunade’s voice rose above the hubbub and what she said was enough to case the raven’s heart to plummet.
“We may all have agreed to trust Naruto’s judgement and to trust the Uchiha as he does but that isn’t enough. His fate is not going to be decided by us or even by Naruto. The council are the ones who will decide.” Sasuke’s heart jumped. ‘Great the council. I’m as good as dead.’ he thought as he mentally sighed. After everything he had learned about their involvement in his past, he couldn’t see how it would be any other way.
It was the council who decided to destroy the Uchiha clan after it emerged that they were plotting against Konoha. They gave the order to Itachi who loyalty to the village was put to the ultimate test when faced with such a task. As the enemy were Uchihas, the only one capable of destroying them was another Uchiha and Itachi had done as he was ordered. His only deviation from those orders was that he left his little brother alive to become the avenger who would one day free him from the guilt that consumed him. And that was exactly what Sasuke had done.
Although it was Konohas councillors who were responsible for the miserable existence Sasuke had suffered, he found that he couldn’t summon any anger against them. His desire for revenge; to seek out someone to blame had died with his aniki and for that he was thankful. He felt almost normal again, as if the life of hell that he had been living ended at the same moment that he had ended Itachi’s. Instead he was left with a sense of peace that he had not felt since his younger days and a burning desire to live. He wanted to live a life that was free of the burdens of an avenger but, most of all, he wanted more time with the one who made him feel alive. He wanted to be with Naruto.
Sasuke tuned back into the conversation around him slowly. He wasn’t really interested in what they had to say but anything was better than listening to his own thoughts clambering around in a panic. All he wanted was to see his dobe, to see those clear, sky-blue eyes looking at him, filling him with a warmth that he truly hadn’t felt since he left him. Just then, the door opened with a resounding crash, emitting a loud, yellow flash into the room.
“Ohayo! I heard that the teme’s waking up.” There was a momentary pause as footfalls sounded, approaching his bedside. “Still looks dead to the world if you ask me, tebayo.”
That voice, that deep, husky voice. Sasuke could feel it warming his very soul and mentally frowned when Tsunade’s voice overrode the pleasant sound.
“He’s defiantly waking up, Naruto but it may be a while so until then you should go and get some rest. You were up all night watching him.” Sasuke felt a momentary panic. He didn’t want the blond angel to leave so soon; he wanted to see him, hear his voice, feel his warmth on his cold skin for just a bit longer. After all, who knew how much time he had left to live? His heart nearly melted when he heard the blond chuckle,
“Nah, I’m alright, tebayo. Anyway, I should be here when the teme wakes up ‘cos I want to be the first one to yell at him.” The raven could almost imagine the mischievous look on Naruto’s face and decided it really wasn’t worth pretending to be asleep anymore. It was time for him to wake up and face his angry dobe.
As soon as he opened his eyes, he came face to face with bright blond hair, azure eyes and white teeth bared in a grin. His breath caught sharply and he could have sworn his heart actually skipped a beat before speeding up quickly as that angelic face drew closer.
“Ohayo, Sasuke-chann,” the heavenly figure whined in a husky voice that immediately sent blood rushing to the raven’s groin, “I knew you were awake tebayo so why were you pretending?” The dark-haired boy narrowed his eyes menacingly at the blond whose smile only got wider when faced with the familiar glare. “You were awake when I entered the room hee hee!” Sasuke narrowed his eyes even more as fought to control the desire to jump the blond there and then. Instead, he pushed the blond away from him slowly; having Naruto so near was asking for trouble. The blue-eyed boys scent was invading his senses and making him light-headed. To cover his discomfort, he simply said ‘Hn’ before remarking scathingly,
“Well, of course. It’s a bit hard to sleep when someone’s being so loud, Usuratonkachi.” The effect of that one, simple word was instantaneous. The blond’s lips tightened as his eyes narrowed dangerously in anger. A growl rumbled deep within a tanned throat as a hand fisted a t-shirt to draw two heated bodies back towards one another.
“What the hell did you just call me, teme?! Mataku, you’ve only been back a few hours and awake for only a few seconds and you’re already insulting me and managing to piss me off!!” He continued to yell in the young Uchiha’s face but all the raven was concentrating on was how sexy Naruto looked when he was angry and how sweet the breath was that was ghosting in his face.
“Hn,” he smirked, “it’s not like it’s hard to enrage you, dobe. It always was easy to wind you up but it’s nice to see that you haven’t changed much.” He looked straight into those blue eyes and felt in his heart the truth of those words as he smiled. The look on the blonds face was almost comical as it changed from extremely pissed to open-mouthed shock in under two seconds. He knew that the reason for Naruto’s shock was that the smile he had given was genuine as was the happiness shinning in his dark eyes. Naruto’s shoulders slumped as he let a small sigh escape him before opening his eyes to smile back.
“Right back at you, teme,” he chuckled, “though I suppose this is a bit of a change coming from you, tebayo. You haven’t tried to kill me yet or are you about to? ‘Cos I’d like some warning if you don’t mind.” The raven winced at the forced cheerfulness in his dobe’s voice. H e knew he had hurt Naruto with those attempts on his life, not so much physically, but emotionally. The first time they had battled in the Valley of the End, the blond had openly cried such was the pain and betrayal he had felt due to Sasuke’s actions. However, he had still tried his hardest to save the young Uchiha from himself and although he had failed, his actions had induced feelings that had engraved themselves on Sasuke’s heart so that he would be unable to forget the young kitsune. Only years later would the proud, stoic young man be able to admit that, at that moment, he had fallen in love with him. Due to his quest for power, he had squashed those feelings, trampled them down beneath the desire for revenge and allowed darkness to settle upon his heart and soul. Only once released from this self-inflicted hell by his big brother did he allow himself to feel once again and realise the depths of his feelings.
But even if he now knew the lengths to which he would go for his dobe, Naruto was unaware of it. The dark-haired boy could see the tension in blond’s shoulders and it hurt to think that he had caused Naruto to have such a reaction to him. He let his dark eyes fill with all the emotions that still overwhelmed him and say the apology that he couldn’t seem to utter.
To his relief, Naruto seemed to understand as his expression softened. The young Uchiha offered a tentative smile and received an amazing, full-blown one in response. Genuine happiness filled him at the realisation that Naruto had truly forgiven him as the warmth he was feeling threatened to fall from his eyes as tears; he had been given a second chance that even he felt he did not deserve.
“Come on, teme. Where’s your usual smirk? Don’t go all misty eyed on me now, tebayo!” the blond exclaimed while punching the raven, none too lightly, on the arm. Sasuke growled as he punched him back until they were having a minor tussle on the bed while laughing hysterically.
The others in the room looked on in astonishment as the two of them rolled around in mirth. It was as if the years apart hadn’t happened. The only difference was in Sasuke’s attitude which, while before it had been cold and aloof, was now open and happy as he wrestled with the young kitsune. The change was incredible to witness and all of them there recognised that Naruto had done it again; he had changed someone’s outlook on life and changed them as a person.
Tsunade was the first to regain her composure (although she had to surreptitiously wipe her nose to get rid of the blood; those two looked so sexy rolling around together) and cleared her throat to get their attention. As if a spell had been spoken, the world that the two of them had occupied was shattered and they were once again faced with a reality that was far from forgiving.
“As much as I hate to break up this enthusiastic reunion, Uchiha, you are still considered a missing nin of Konoha and the punishment for that is severe. I don’t want to get your hopes up; the sentence that the council passes is usually death.”
