Chapter Two: In the Devil's Hands
Many people claim that they have a guardian angel; someone who will watch over them as they go about their daily life. But not many would claim that they were watched over by a demon. In most peoples mind, they can separate good from evil, but when they are faced with it in reality, distinguishing between them is harder than previously thought. Our minds give us a twisted sense of good and evil, and those thoughts are shaped by our family and society. It is only when we start to question what has been taught to us that we find it harder and harder to distinguish between the two sides of life. How can we say what is right and what is wrong, and in that moment of weakness, we are truly lost.
In the days that Sasuke first noticed the blond in the church, he simply disregarded him as the usual sinner who was trying to earn favor in God’s eyes and never paid much attention to him. It was only after he watched him come in week after week and pray continuously that his thoughts began to change. A sinner wasn’t the type to truly look peaceful within the holy walls while praying.
It wasn’t until one Sunday that the sunlight streamed through a small stained glass window, hitting the blond just right that Sasuke realized his mistake. The blond hair seemed to glow like a halo and his heart skipped a beat as the tan eyelids opened to reveal a dazzling blue that rivaled the summer sky. It was then that Sasuke concluded that the blond wasn’t a sinner, but instead, the opposite.
He had to be an angel.
Sasuke continued to watch him as the days passed, trying to find ways to talk to the blond angel. Just to hear that sweet voice that escaped his mouth and see those eyes dance with joy. But he found that he couldn’t bring himself to sit next to the blond and had to settle watching from a far.
He had always pictured his meeting with the blond, seeing it as something that couldn’t go wrong. They would start with something simple, like a cup of coffee from the bookstore down the road, and they would talk over their drinks. He would find out things about the blond that would more than likely draw him in even more and he would let the blond know something’s about himself as well. Just to spend one day with the blond would be enough to satisfy him.
One day.
Now seeing those clear blue eyes harden into ice, he was worried this would be his one day.
In his mind, he knew that he should have lied, done something to protect himself. Anything that would stop the vicious cycle of baiting and killing. But his subconscious seemed to override his mind, telling him that the young raven in front of him wouldn’t buy it. It screamed in his mind to kill the male and push aside all morals that he had set aside.
Morals don’t protect you from the police.
He felt his mind switch over and the fog and confusion that were swimming in his head cleared. He could see the answer clearly in front of him and he knew what he needed to do. His mentality would have to wait until night, when it finally realized that he took the life of some unplanned person.
And then his subconscious would take over, soothing him and telling him that it was a necessity. He would move on, and the memories would only be a faint nagging memory in the very back of his mind.
Naruto stood up and the pale male took a step back, his sneaker smudging the blood further onto the floors surface. Naruto’s eyes widened when he realized that the raven was going to run; not only to the cops but he would leave evidence that he was here. He couldn’t allow that.
Faster than the raven eyes could move, he was over the desk, avoiding the pool of blood and slammed the males’ body into the wall. He struggled against his grip and the frantic pleas to let him go reached his ears.
“Begging for your life won’t help you.” He huffed into his ear. “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you go.”
He felt the body tense for a moment before it went slack and Naruto had to check to make sure his victim hadn’t passed out. Instead, he was met with black eyes that showed only the faintest hints of fear, but were otherwise unreadable. His eyebrows furrowed in thought as he brought his hand up to wrap around the pale neck.
Why wasn’t he struggling?
There was no thrill if he didn’t plead and beg for his life.
Sasuke felt the dull fear ebb away as he resigned himself to his fate. He had always known that death would come to him. It was a fact that Sasuke had always been comfortable with. Being murdered wasn’t his first choice as means of death, yet some how losing his life to this man seemed alright.
Maybe Sasuke hadn’t been wrong, the blond really was an angel. He was an angel of death; beautiful and dangerous. The connection Sasuke felt towards the other man pulsed at the thought. The idea of being over powered by someone so forbidden and deadly made Sasuke thrum with desire. It was an odd feeling to have ones body aroused during the last moments of their life. He knew his death would be painful and horrid, yet it did nothing to douse the passion that had welled up within him. Since when had Sasuke been so masochistic?
Or maybe that wasn’t the reason at all. Perhaps his soon to be murder was to blame. All those times that Sasuke had worshiped him from afar had made the raven inexplicably obsessed with the blond.
Sasuke closed his eyes, waiting for the painful torture that was sure to come. A dark part of himself didn’t even bother to wish for this to be quick. Somehow, he wished for pain.
Naruto’s gripped faltered as the man before him became lax. His eyes began to loose some of their crazed tint. Never had he encountered a victim whom had given up so quickly. It killed his high, and brought him crashing back to earth. His mind cleared and for the first time he really looked at the man before him.
He was the image of darkness, yet he held a light, which Naruto lacked. This man was content, he was ready to die. It shocked Naruto that someone could accept something so final without so much as a struggle. Who was this man to give into his death so easily?
Naruto feared death; it was one aspect of his life that he could not control. Not matter how many lives he had taken and end of his own volition, his own life was intangible and out of his reach. It scared him to think that his life was in the hands of a stranger. Naruto hated the fear that welled up within him. Oh how he wished he could steal this unwavering conviction, courage, from this man.
Sasuke watched as the emotions danced across clear blue pools. He felt a sense of awe over come him as such purity reflected within his angels eyes. It amazed him how quickly they could shift. Once they had been dangerously cold, tinted red with blood lust. Now they were a cerulean blue, pure and untainted.
“You’re not afraid to die.” It wasn’t a question, just a statement made from observation. The words though pulled Sasuke’s attention full onto his captor. He felt a strong urge to answer the question. It wasn’t need, yet something compelled him to confirm it.
“No.” His voice sounded odd, like someone else was speaking for him. It was hushed and strained; maybe it was the hand that still clenched his throat that caused his off tone.
“You want to die?” Naruto’s voice became quiet, mirroring Sasuke’s own.
“No.”
The blond looked at Sasuke, amazement written purely on his face. Naruto could not bring himself to understand this man. He had only known him for a short while, yet he felt intrigued by this enigma of a human. Killing him no longer proved to excite him. This man would prove to be a much better use alive. Yes, he would keep this man.
A grim smile spread itself across a fox like face. The crazed look returned to Naruto’s face. Before Sasuke had time to realize the change in atmosphere, he was knocked harshly with some unknown object.
His last thoughts as he fell to the cold tile floor were of how harmonious the choir sounded as they sung some familiar hymn to the Lord, our God.
Brown eyes glanced at the clock nervously while his hands continued to grip others hands offered to him. He was waiting for a scream, a yell, a hoarse cry; something. Something that would tell him that the horrific deed in the back had been found. The plans were already laid down and he knew his part should that scream echo throughout the church, but so far, the only thing that sounded in the large church was the gentle murmuring of exiting people.
Still, he refused to breathe easier until everyone was out. His eyes skimmed over the church one last time, taking in the empty pews with the exception of one gray haired man. Besides him, the church was empty and it wasn’t until he was locking the doors behind him that he realized there was one person he hadn't seen leaving the church.
If there was one person he knew, it was the young raven haired Uchiha. The male dutifully came to every morning mass and would sit in the shadows of the church, minding his own business. Often times, it was easy to forget that he was there, but with the upcoming preparations, he had been keeping a close watch on everyone, from their sitting habits to when they left. The Uchiha never left until mass was over and he would have remembered someone slipping out early.
His feet moved him away from the door and to the back of the church were the smaller rooms were located. God help them if he had gone back there to pray; the blond would give him no mercy.
The faint light from the room illuminated the floor outside the door and he felt his feet quicken as it neared. There were no sounds coming from inside the room but he wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not. He could only pray that the Uchiha had gone to the bathroom or left early for an emergency.
He threw open the door and his eyes quickly settled on the blond male who was holding the raven by his neck. The pale youth seemed to be knocked out and he started forward as Naruto raised his hand, “You can’t kill him Naruto!”
Cold blue eyes swung up to met his and they flashed with something he couldn’t quite place, “God Naruto, don’t kill him.”
“I wasn’t planning on it, but now I wish to know your reasoning behind it, Father.”
The priest shuffled in the doorway, “He’s due to be married in a few weeks and he’s part of the Uchiha family. If he dies or vanishes, his parents will turn the city inside out in order to find him or his killer.”
Naruto’s eyes flickered down to the unconscious form in his arms, “He saw; I can’t just sit and do nothing with him.”
It was only then that the priest looked around the room and he felt bile rising to his throat. He turned his head and emptied his stomach into the hallway as the smell of metallic blood filled his nose. Despite all the years of doing this, he had never once seen a result this bloody and he started to dry heave while his mind tried to block out the images in the room.
“He deserved it Father; it had to be done.”
Naruto’s voice was far away and he placed his hands on the wall to steady himself while he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. His eyes cautiously flickered back into the room and they took in the massive amounts of blood that were painted on the furniture and walls. A large puddle of the red liquid was growing slowly larger and his sight traveled up to the body that lay mangled on the alter and he found he had to look away.
“What, what are you going to do with him?” He finally asked.
The blond shrugged, “I’m not sure; he intrigues me. But I bet he would be wonderful to play with; he has an interesting spirit that begs to be broken.”
A sigh came from the doorway, “Geez, you sure do like theatrics’. It’ll take a while to get this place back to normal.”
Naruto smirked, “That’s why you’re here Kakashi.”
The police officer grunted and then glanced at the raven-haired male in Naruto’s arms. “What are you going to do with him Naruto?”
Cold blue eyes glanced down to regard the figure that he held in his arms, and they narrowed slightly as they remembered the indifference in those dead eyes. He wondered what it would be like to watch those deep pits come to life with fear; everyone had something they feared losing, it was just a mater of finding it. At the thought, a small grin slipped across his face and the sudden realization of what he was going to do hit him.
“I’m just going to take him home and make sure he doesn’t say anything.”
He stepped over the large pool of blood, being careful to avoid any smaller spots that might leave imprints. Even though Kakashi would take care of the mess, he didn’t want to leave any unnecessary marks in case something was overlooked. His gaze shifted back to the priest who was trying his hardest not to look at the room again and even the police officer seemed to have a small tint of green on his cheeks at the bloody sight inside the room.
Once he was outside the room, he sucked in a deep breath, enjoying the clean air that circulated throughout the church and he glanced down at the raven in his arms. He would be waking up soon and if he didn’t hurry, he could wake en route to his apartment and try to run. His grip tightened; he couldn’t allow that.
With the thought in mind, he turned on his heal and vanished into the shadows of the church, fully accepting them compared to others who disregarded them. The shadows didn’t judge him and it was only with them that he felt at peace.
Falling. Sasuke was falling, the formless tangles of darkness embracing him. Their feather light touches caressed his heated skin. His decent slowed, or had he just lost track of the moving of time.
How long had he been falling? Seconds, hours, he couldn’t tell. Nor could he find it within himself to care. In this limitless void, Sasuke felt calm and safe. Nothing could touch him, yet he felt a yearning to reach out and grasp at the reality that he knew lingered right out of eyesight.
An urge called him forward, and he felt gravity claim him once again. He could not see the ground but he knew it to be there. Somewhere beneath him is this blackness, hiding away like a skillful predator. It would take his life if he gave it the chance.
Wings, he needed to fly. To be swept away into the heavens and bask it the suns fruitful glow. No longer did the darkness feel warm and inviting. The murky world around him seemed to mock him, swallowing him into it’s gullet.
Sasuke wanted to scream, to shout, but nothing could be forced from his parched throat. Only a hoarse whine escaped, but it faded on the tip of his tongue.
The bright flash of light that followed poured warm brightness into this oblivion. Sasuke was sure to take notice of the darkness that lurked out of reach. The dark would always live, for dark can crush light, but light can only hope to pacify the darkness. It was a fact that hit Sasuke hard. Couldn’t the same concept be used when looking at good and evil? One could turn their back on good, but never could they turn away evil. Temptation is always present and with it came sin.
Still, the light was Sasuke’s salvation, as a faceless angel came to him, arms out stretched.
The warmth that bubbled up within Sasuke’s heart was consuming. This heavenly being was here for him, granting him final judgment perhaps? Had he final been able to leave the cruel world of humans behind. Could he turn his cheek to the pains of the people?
With his hand out, Sasuke went to grab for the angels hand. There finger tips brushed, and he couldn’t help to blink. The offered hand closed off to him, letting his lead body fall to its death.
He had been denied. Left to fall into the pits of hell. Sasuke couldn’t say he was surprised, what use would heaven have for him? This corrupted mess of a man. God did not have eyes for him, nor had he ever. Sasuke had been kissed by the devil at birth. He was a demon wishing for an angels wings.
A small smile played upon his lips, as he relaxed his body for the impact that was to come.
With a start, Sasuke sat up right. Itchy blankets fell to his lap in a puddle. The material rubbed him the wrong way as he shifted his legs. It was then that he realized that he was only in his boxers. Such a thing should have bothered him, yet he couldn’t find it in him to care.
The room around him was too reminiscent of his dream for Sasuke’s liking. The limitless darkness hid the rooms’ inner belongings and residents. Tiny hairs stood up on the back of his neck. Someone was watching him, or so he felt.
Light flickered in from the TV that played out white noise. Sasuke’s eyes were drawn in, staring at the flickering snow. Once or twice he thought he had caught a glimpse of white wings, or striking blue eyes. His angel was haunting him.
Finally he looked away when a flash of blood caught his vision and grim pictures reeled through his mind like an old movie show.
The images frames were tattered and flecked with grim, making it hard for his minds eye to process them fully.
Sasuke jumped as the TV clipped and popped, before it shut off cloaking the room in a sheet of black. The only sound was the soft thudding of shoes on carpet. They seemed to be in tuned to his heart, and the beats came simultaneously.
Thump, thump, thump, and then it was only his heart in it’s solo hymn. It raced, and thudded as anticipation flooded him. Sasuke waited for anything, his ears trained in on all directions.
The suspense was killing him, and he knew that he was beginning to falling into himself in panic. Something was wrong, and he couldn’t bring himself to force out his bravado. Something about this situation was soaked in uncertainty and there was nothing familiar about it. He couldn’t bring himself to think clearly, not with the dark consuming him. Nowhere was safe, it was everywhere. All around him, in him, eating away at his mind.
And it was then that the darkness reached out and with hard hands grabbing at his silken locks, pulling his head back. Onyx eyes looked up into the face of darkness, and it was then that Sasuke realized that this consuming blackness had the face of an angel.
“Angel.” The word slipped out of his mouth and he watched as the emotions flickered across the tan face.
Naruto’s mouth drew into a tight line as he looked down at the raven. Throughout his life, he had often been called that word; a word that was reserved for those already dead. And he was not dead. His grip tightened and he was pleased to see pain dance across the pale features, but still no fear. Did he wish to die by his hands and was only waiting for the fatal blow?
“What did you call me?” He asked.
“You’re an Angel.” The male breathed out and reached up to touch him, “Please…let me touch you.”
Hands cupped his face and Naruto’s body stiffened before he quickly backhanded the male across the face. The raven cried out at the sudden blow and Naruto let him fall to onto the floor with a loud thud. Silence settled over them while the male stayed still; obviously scared to move again, and with that thought in mind, Naruto moved closer to him.
“If I am what you call me, how dare you think you can casually touch me, filthy human.” He snarled and yanked Sasuke up by his wrist until they were face to face.
“I’m sorry.” He answered, “I wasn’t thinking.”
Naruto snorted, “No, you weren’t; but I wouldn’t expect anything special out of you. You who aren’t scared to die, but I bet that’s what you want; to die by my hands. It would be an honor, wouldn’t it.” He saw the male shake his head yes and noticed the same sense of calm in his dark eyes. His hand darted forward to catch his chin, “You disgust me.”
Dark eyes widened at the three words and he frantically shook his head. A tan hand slipped up his chest and wound its way around his neck while a finger rested on his quickly beating pulse. “Tell me why you didn’t scream and run. Answer truthfully or I’ll destroy all that is near and dear to you while you watch helplessly from a far.”
“Because it was you... because...” Sasuke faltered, unsure of the reasons behind his actions. “I don’t know.” And it was the truth, the sickening reality. He didn’t know why he had not screamed, letting this man who’s hands were stained with blood pay for his crimes. Was it really all because this man was an angel to Sasuke?
An angel? Yes, the blond was an angel. In this ugly and corrupt world, why couldn’t the heavenly angels be just as cruel? Religion had painted them as chubby cherubs, but Sasuke knew the truth. In God’s holy kingdom, there was no justice, nothing divine. Only the cold hard reality in the shape of an angels wicked smile.
There was no salvation for Sasuke, he knew that now. All that was left for him was his death that he had willingly given to this beautiful man. He had nothing waiting for him in this world any longer, if life had already begun it’s downward climb. What was there for him to do?
“You don’t know?” The answer seemed to enrage Naruto more that pacify him. He didn’t want to hear pitiful responses, he wanted fucking answers. His thumbnail bit dangerously into Sasuke’s tender neck. The jagged nail cut into the flesh, earning a hiss from the raven’s parted lips.
The sound alone was enough to calm Naruto down a fraction. Such a sweet noise. This man could make lovely sounds when in pain, Naruto was sure of it.
“You knew your life belonged to me. All those times you watched me in that joke of a church, you knew. You could feel me call to you.” The dark voice was smooth and sweet; a warm breath ghosting over cold skin. “That’s why you didn’t scream. You knew your life belonged to me.”
Sasuke wanted to deny those words, block them out of his consciousness. There was something so direct and tempting about them, as if they held nothing but the truth. He hadn’t even realized that his mind had molded them into being until it was too late. The seed had been planted and he was falling into an ominous spell that was being woven.
No matter how hard he willed them to dissipate, those words held strong. They bended his knowledge and his reality. Everything he thought he knew about himself was melting away.
“No...no...” His words were nothing but a whispered chant. “No...no...no...” Maybe if he denied it enough, all of this word go away. He could regain some of his sanity and make it out of this nightmare in one piece.
“No, you say? Can’t you taste the lie on your own tongue?” His angel laughed harshly, a mocking sound.
There's always a certain amount of fear that you must face when dealing with the truth; and truth is often a cold mistress. Tempting you to find out the things you want to know, but in the end that truth has turned into a darkened road that you can't escape from.
A cry escaped his lips as the angel dropped him back to the floor and he watched as the blond seemed to try to calm himself done. It was with morbid fascination that he watched the many emotions flicker through the seemingly glowing eyes and Sasuke found himself drawn into them; that if he stared long enough he would drown in them.
“I'm not going to kill you, if that's what you're thinking.” The voice said lowly. “But I'm not going to let you go free either.”
Fear gripped at Sasuke's heart. If he wasn’t going to die by this man's hands, what more could he want?
“I don't have much to give.” Sasuke said slowly, “What is it that you want from me?”
Naruto snorted, “Who said I would want anything from you? Who said that I even like you? Maybe I don't want to kill you because I feel it wouldn't be worth my time.” A feral grin spread across his lips as hurt slipped across the mans' face. “You're worthless, my little raven.”
Those few words sent shivers down his spine but it didn't stop his mouth from blurting out his name, “Sasuke.”
“Hmm?”
Sasuke sucked in a deep breath, “My name is Sasuke.”
“Like I care what your name is.” A hand threaded through his hair again and brought him closer to the tanned body, “But so you know; I already knew your name...Sasuke Uchiha. You have an older brother named Itachi, don't you. It would be a pity if something happened to him.”
“What are you going to do to him?”
“Nothing...yet.” A soft hand stroked his face and he felt himself leaning into the touch before he caught himself. He jerked back but the damage was done and he could see the faintest traces of triumph in the angels eyes, “I'm going to let you go my little raven bird, but if you go to the cops and tattle on me; you'll find yourself wishing you were dead as I hunt down and destroy all those around you. Starting with your brother. I'll strap you to a chair and make you watch as I violate him in so many ways, you'll wish I had killed you now.”
The hand dropped to his neck again and tightened so he gagged on the pressure. He struggled against the grip until black started to impede on his vision before the vice like grip loosened and Sasuke quickly gasped for air. Sasuke struggled to focus on his angel and once his eyes came into focus, the man leaned in again, allowing his warm breath to ghost over his face.
“Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
“Good; now get out of my sight for the rest of the day.” He paused and seemed to think for a moment, “But I want you back before midnight.”
Clothes were thrown at his face and they dropped into his lap. Sasuke's hands clenched at the materials and his head jerked up as his angel moved away, “Wait. What...what's your name?”
The blond sneered, “Idiot child, if I didn't care to know your name, why should I let you know mine? What makes you think you're any better than everyone else who wishes to know my name?”
Sasuke's eyes dropped to his clothes and he jumped when a rough hand grabbed his chin, forcing his face up. Harsh lips slammed against his own and he cried out in pain, but that only allowed for the angel's tongue to slip into his mouth and thoroughly violate it. His hands sought to grasp at anything to keep him anchored and they soon grabbed onto the blonds' shoulder.
The kiss; if it could be called that, broke abruptly and Sasuke was pushed onto the ground. He gasped for breath as the blond stood up, “Midnight.” He reminded him and turned to leave, “Now get out before I change my mind.”
Sasuke quickly scrambled out of the room while he clutched his clothes to his chest and his feet pounded against the carpeted floor. It didn't cross his mind that he was only in his boxers as he ran down the hallway, but he refused to stop until he felt he had put enough distance between himself and the blond angel. He pressed his body against the wall and tried to calm his racing heart.
His hands were too shaky as he tried to dress himself and his thoughts raced around in his mind. In the span of one night, he had seen both heaven and hell.
