A/N: I don’t want anyone
to think I’m being insensitive where mental illness is concerned. I dated a schizophrenic for a little over a
year, and this is what he was like when he was off his meds. So, I’m basing Gaara on something. As far as whatever else illnesses pop up, I
grew up in a town with a mental hospital…and a few of my friends ended up
there. If you’re thinking you can’t be
put in a mental institution for repeated attempts at running away, you’re
wrong. One of my friends was. It might be a while before we get to any actual
smut. This is going to be a very plot
intensive story.
Review Responses:
Ero Sennin: I don’t like Sasuke in the anime either, but
somehow I keep writing about him. *shrug* I guess my muse likes him or
something…although she can be mean to him, so maybe it’s subconscious
torture? As far as the story, as I said
in my note, I have a lot of friends with mental illnesses. I even did a dance recital in our state
mental institution when I was a little girl.
It’s going to be intense for a while.
ItaNaruLover: I’m glad you think this is interesting. This is a story I’m actually really proud of
so far. I think (hopefully) that it will
be very emotional. I’m glad you think it
has the potential of being one of the best stories around. Despite not holding my stories ransom for
reviews, I crave them. Hearing extremely
nice ones like this just make me smile.
Nejislady: My inspiration for Gaara trying to kill himself
while thinking no one cared, even though he caused the inability to get to him
comes from real life. My ex did that to
me and his family one time. We
(literally) had to break down his bedroom door to get to him. He’d barricaded
it with his guitar amps, and we couldn’t push it open. His dad finally grabbed one of his own amps
and smashed it into the door. When he
took his meds, you couldn’t even tell there was anything wrong with him, but
when he stopped it was really scary. I
hope you like plot, because as I said above it might be awhile before there’s
smut.
Chapter 2
Gaara sighed as he sat alone in his little room. The “doctor,” if you could call him that,
that had come to explain the rules of the Institution to him, was a joke. His white hair was bushy. He seemed like he was stuck in the fucking
80s for Christ’s sake. It looked like he’d
tried to make it ‘manageable’ and pulled it back into something that was
supposed to be a ponytail. He said
something about not being able to make unsupervised phone calls, and he was
certain there was something about not getting any meds until his system cleaned
out, which meant nothing in his room but his bed. His blankets would be taken away during the
day so he wouldn’t be able to strangle himself.
Gaara snorted. He
turned to stare out his barred window.
There was a wind today. It was
blowing pretty hard from what he could see.
The trees surrounding the building were bent almost sideways. He saw some visitors approaching the building
and had to hold in his snort as a little girl lost a card she’d been
carrying. He sighed. It would be at least a week before he could
see Naruto, but Naruto had promised to show up.
Gaara blew his bangs out of his face. He really needed a haircut. It wasn’t likely he’d be getting one anytime
soon. Scissors anywhere near his
location seemed to be against the rules.
He groaned as the door opened. He
turned to see the white haired guy from before.
“Gaara, I just wanted to come and let you know that we’re taking a floor
walk in 15 minutes. I want you to come
to lobby and wait with the rest of your floor.”
Gaara shrugged and slid his shoes back on. He was glad he had slip on Converses because
they would have taken shoe laces away.
He followed the nurse down the hall.
She had short brown hair and her eyes seemed to be soft and caring. “This way, Gaara. I’ll be your nurse. On high-risk floors, like this one, you all
have individual nurses. It’s the only
way we can get you guys outside for excise.”
Gaara nodded. “So,
you’re my nurse then?”
She nodded. “I’m
Shizune. If you need anything, you just
call me okay?”
Gaara nodded and frowned toward the lobby where three other
people were sitting. He didn’t see the
dark haired boy and figured the guy must not be high risk. The boy that had been being admitted at the same
time as him had captured his attention.
He wasn’t sure why. He wasn’t
attracted to him. He wasn’t attracted to
anyone. He didn’t deserve to be loved,
so why should he bother falling for anyone.
Gaara sat down in the chair and looked at the others surrounding him. He saw another red head that didn’t look much
older than himself. The boy was rocking
back and forth as if he couldn’t control it.
Gaara nearly snorted when he thought that he might be sane compared to
this one. The blonde girl next to him
seemed to be completely zoned out until she suddenly looked up and winked at
Gaara. Wait, was that facial hair? Okay, so the boy with the blue eyes and
blonde hair turned to the red head next to him and grinned at him almost
lecherously. Across from the blond was a
girl with dark brown hair and eyes that seemed to have no pupil at all. Even Gaara had to admit that creepy. She sat there pushing her fingers together
almost like she was nervous, or at least he would have thought nerves if he
hadn’t seen the maniacal glint to her eyes.
Shizune smiled. “Hello
everyone. This is Gaara.” Gaara raised his head just a bit. His internal voice was snickering at the
riff-raff that he was stuck sharing his floor with. “Gaara, this is Sasori,” she indicated the
red-head. “Next to him is Deidara, and
across from him is Hinata.” She turned
as she saw another nurse walking down the hall.
“And our last floor resident, Kiba.”
Gaara smirked at the boy with triangle tattoos on his
face. His features were wild, but it
seemed as if he was medicated, since his eyes seemed dull and glazed over. Shizune smiled as she introduced Kiba to
Gaara. Gaara snorted. You’re
not even special here. You’re still a
waste of space. I think you should kill
one of these guys. At least then you’ll
be able to prove you’re actually dangerous.
I don’t think anyone believes that right now.
Gaara almost grabbed his head, but he really wanted to go
outside and breathe the fresh air. It may
have only been a day that he was here in the institute, but he felt like it had
been forever since he was allowed to be outside. He managed to keep his normal reaction to the
voice down, and just frowned at the people around him.
The white haired doctor was back. “All right, gang. What do you say we head outside for some
exploration of our environment?”
Gaara watched as all the crazies You’re
crazy too, dumbfuck lined up next to their nurses. Shizune smiled beside Gaara, while Gaara
managed to remain impassive. He didn’t
want to acknowledge the fucking voice anymore, and certainly not in the
presence of the people who could make his life hell. He sighed as they filed out down the
stairwell. The doctor was singing some
fucking song Gaara vaguely recognized, but his subconscious refused to recall.
Gaara sighed as they reached the bottom floor, and looked
around as they headed out toward the courtyard, surrounded by a fence, where
the ‘inmates’ were allowed to walk. Of
course, since his was the “high-risk” floor, they didn’t get to do the walking
by themselves. He looked up at the sky
and sighed. He wondered, not for the
first time, what it would be like to be weightless and just leave everything
the earth brought with it, pain, suffering, and torment, and instead have no
worries and just drift along the breeze in the sky. If he had wings and could fly away from
everything, he thought maybe things would be better.
As Gaara dropped his gaze back in front of him, he noticed
that a few of the other ‘inmates’ were out relaxing. He saw the black haired boy from yesterday
lounging under a tree, reading a book.
He looked bored and impassive, but Gaara recognized the look for what it
was, a mask. Who better to see through
someone else’s mask than a person who wore one every day? Gaara averted his gaze before the other might
suspect something. Loser. He wouldn’t want you anyway. He’s probably mocking you behind that
book. Slit his throat before he can plan
something to make you look like a fool.
Gaara scrunched his eyes closed and tried to block out the
voice, but it just seemed to become louder and louder. Finally he couldn’t take it anymore. He grabbed his head and pulled his hair hard
before dropping to his knees. “Shut
up! Shut up!” He fell forward with the intent to smash his
head against the ground repeatedly when Shizune and that white-haired doctor
grabbed both his arms. “Just let me
die. Just let me smash that fucker out
of my head. I don’t want to live like
this anymore. I can’t live like this
anymore!” Gaara was hysterical and
oblivious to the looks he was receiving from just about everyone. Even his fellow high-risk patients were a
little shocked.
Hinata smirked. He
wasn’t as normal as he seemed. She’d
wondered why he was even on the floor at first.
He seemed like one of those pansy boys who just thought they had it
rough. She had been abused as a child,
beaten and what-have-you, and it had manifested in her turning into a complete
sociopath. At least that’s what they
told her. She’d held her older cousin
under water to the point he almost drowned before someone had pulled her off
him. He was fine after some medical
care. It hadn’t even dulled his brain
function, but apparently since she didn’t see anything wrong with that and had
felt no remorse, she was sick. Her
parents had quickly had her locked up in this Institution. Apparently at age 13 she was supposed to have
recognized the action as wrong, but she just saw the only way she could get rid
of the cousin who was stealing her parents’ attention.
She watched as Gaara was pulled back to the building by his
nurse while her own nurse turned toward her.
“What’s wrong with him, Iruka?”
Iruka shook his head slightly. “You know that I can’t tell you that. If he feels like revealing it to you later,
he can tell you.” He smiled at her. “You want to finish our walk once Jiraiya
gets back?”
Hinata nodded. “It’s
been almost a week since we got outside.”
Her brown hair whipped around her face.
She turned her face into the wind and sighed. When she heard the familiar laughter of
Jiraiya she turned toward Iruka. “I’m
getting hungry; can we move lunch up today?”
Iruka smiled and shook his head. “No, I’m
sorry. You know the schedule is set.” She smiled and shrugged as they resumed their
rounds.
~~~~*~~~~*~~~~*~~~*~~~~
Sasuke sighed as he was woken up by the loud bell that rang
in his room. He could hear the bell
going off all over the floor. “Fuck,” he
groaned as he cracked an eye and saw that the sun was just barely above the
horizon. He tossed a pillow over his eyes
and willed the sound away. After five
minutes, the bell finally stopped ringing and he closed his eyes. It was dark enough with the pillow over his
face to keep sleeping.
His day had been fairly unproductive yesterday. He’d crawled into his bed with his headphones
and stared at the ceiling. He was told
he’d be allowed to have all of his personal belongings until 8 at night. Then he would be required to turn them
in. The only exception was his cell
phone. That had to be turned over
immediately. They were allowed two hours
after lunch to use their phones; otherwise they would be forced to use the
lobby phones, which was to discourage them from making phone calls that would
disrupt their progress or some other bullshit.
The door to his room opened and a voice called out for him
to get up. “Fuck off! It’s too fucking early.” He heard a chuckle. “What?” He growled out as he pulled the
pillow from his face. He saw a man in a
lab coat lounging against the door frame with his arms crossed over his
chest. His grey hair seemed to defy
gravity as it stood on end, and he had a patch over one eye, the scar over the
eye still just visible over the top and bottom of the patch. He almost looked like a pirate.
The man at the door rolled his visible eye. “That was the morning wake up bell, Mr.
Uchiha. You will follow our rules while
you are here. If you wanted to sleep in,
you should have followed the rules at home.”
Sasuke glared at the man and was slightly surprised when he didn’t recoil at
all. The only people who ever had been
immune to the glare before were his family.
He growled. “Fuck off,” he leaned
back down and put the pillow over his face again.
“Mr. Uchiha,” the voice was much closer this time. “I will not tell you again. Get up.
This is your final warning.”
Sasuke sighed and groaned as he forced himself up. It wasn’t like he could sleep anymore after
all this anyway. He pushed himself off
the bed and stood up, glaring at the doctor.
He glanced at the name tag. “Happy
Hatake?”
The doctor smiled at him.
“Absolutely. Be showered in 15
minutes. Breakfast will be served soon.
You don’t want to be late or you’ll miss it.
If you miss it, that’s just too bad.”
Sasuke growled as the man vacated his room. He sighed before hitting the showers. He really hadn’t eaten much yesterday and didn’t
want to miss breakfast. After a quick,
and cold, shower, Sasuke headed out of his room toward the little kitchen
area. He groaned when he saw there was
all ready a long line for breakfast. He
joined the queue and frowned as the pink-haired girl in front of him turned
around. “What are you in for?” She
questioned happily.
Sasuke glared at her. “Killing a man.”
She laughed. “Yeah
right. If you did that, they’d put you
up in high-risk.” She looked around
quickly. “They’re really bad. There’s only like 4 of them up there, but I
heard they got a new one yesterday, so I guess like 5.”
Sasuke sighed and puffed his bangs out of his face. He hadn’t bothered styling his hair. It wasn’t like there was anyone to impress in
here. Not that he’d had anyone in
particular to impress out there either.
Mostly he just fucked around if he did feel the urge to be with
someone. He never picked anyone that he
knew personally. It would have been too
big of a pain in the ass to deal with someone whining about his not wanting a
relationship. Usually he’d just hit a
club and pick an attractive stranger. He
wasn’t stupid. He’d use a condom every
time. He wasn’t picky either, man or
woman, so long as they were attractive. He
hated morning people. He looked around,
ignoring the girl until she went back to talking to the blond girl in front of
her.
“Troublesome,” was muttered from behind him.
Sasuke turned around to see a boy that looked to be his age
yawning behind him. His hair was thrown
up in a messy ponytail, and he seemed to be asleep on his feet. Sasuke smirked. Thank
God there is someone else in here that isn’t a morning person. Sasuke focused his attention on the
breakfast line as he finally neared the trays.
He grabbed a tray and some silverware.
He waited for the pinkette in front of him to finish gabbing with the
lady behind the counter. Her silver hair
gave away her age, even if the rest of her body seemed younger. He growled as she smiled at him. “Some of the eggs and bacon and toast.”
She smiled. “Sure
thing, cutie. You’re new, huh? Don’t worry; this floor is mostly like a walk
in the park. If you start learning to
follow some rules, you’ll be out in no time.”
Sasuke shrugged. “Hn.” He walked away as
soon as the food was on his plate. He
headed toward the end of the food counter where the beverages were located. He sighed as he grabbed a glass of orange
juice and set it on his tray. He looked
around the room and sighed again. Every
table had someone sitting at it.
The guy behind him whispered, “If you want solitude here,
you’re fucked.”
Sasuke’s shoulders slumped a little as he grunted out a ‘hn.’ The kid behind him chuckled. “What?”
The tired looking boy shook his head. “Come
with me.” Sasuke followed as the boy led
him to a table that had a few more spaces open than some of the ones. “These are the least troublesome people.”
Sasuke looked at the table and saw an older guy with an
almost shark-like appearance. There was
a guy that looked like he was in his mid-twenties covered in piercings, and a
girl with blue hair sitting awfully close to one another. On the other side of the table there was a
kid with the biggest eyebrows he’d ever seen, sporting a bowl cut and green
jumpsuit. Sasuke forgot he wasn’t going
to make friends here as he leaned over to the boy who had led him over, “Are
you sure these are the least annoying?”
The boy smirked. “Unfortunately, yes.”
Sasuke groaned as he sat down. The piercing kid laughed at him. “What did
you find, Shikamaru?”
Shikamaru shrugged before starting in on his food. Sasuke was appreciative of the lazy kid. He turned toward his own plate. The rest of the table decided to ignore
Sasuke for now. Finally Sasuke looked up
and noticed that the piercing kid was still looking at him. “What?”
Piercing guy smiled. “I’m
Pein.” He motioned to the girl next to
him. “This is my girlfriend, Konan.”
Sasuke smirked wickedly.
“A pleasure, I’m sure.” His voice
was dripping with sarcasm.
Pein rolled his eyes.
“Stop being a bitch. We’re all in
here for basically the same reason.
Rich, privileged kids who can’t seem to stop whining about how bad our
life is until our parents freak out and think we’ve got some kind of mental
disorder, which lands us in the loony bin.”
“Not me! I’m in here
because the power of youth is not enough to overcome the oppressive nature of
the majority!” Sasuke raised an eyebrow
at the bushy eyebrow green thing. “I’m
Lee. It is with the happiness of youth
that I make your acquaintance.”
The sleepy kid next to Sasuke smirked. “Shikamaru.”
Sasuke sighed. “Sasuke.”
Sasuke finished eating and dumped his tray before heading
back to his room. Since he was
considered low-risk, he only needed to be buzzed through the locked door to the
hallway that led to his room. There were
no escorts. Every entrance to the
building had a locked door. The only way
in or out with a staff member. The
interior doors were all locked, but since it wasn’t like he could actually
escape, he made his way to his room without interruption. The doors to the individual rooms weren’t
capable of being locked. There was some
rule about no socialization in the rooms, though. All socialization had to take place in the
recreation room or courtyard.
Sasuke sighed as he grabbed his book and started
reading. He looked outside and noticed
the wind, but decided it would be a nice thing to sit outside anyway. He headed back to the lunchroom, where he
would be able to enter the courtyard. He
ignored the pink-haired girl as she kept trying to talk to him while he made
his way to some shade. “I’m going to
read.” He told her in dismissal.
There were quite a few people out here, reading or just
hanging out and talking. Whatever they
felt like doing really. What the fuck
kind of mental institution was this? It
was like a fucking spa. He looked up as
the doors opened and a long line of nurses and patients walked out the
door. They were led by the doctor that
had checked him in yesterday. They
walked around the courtyard in a line. “They
are the high-riskers,” Shikamaru said from behind him. “They always have to be escorted because they
might either escape or hurt someone.”
Sasuke went back to reading his book. At least he tried to. He heard someone shouting “shut up” and
looked up from his book. He saw the
familiar red head that had been checked in around the same time he had
been. He was on the ground screaming and
grabbing his head. As he went to bash
his head into the ground he was pulled up by his nurse and the doctor. They drug him back inside and Sasuke turned
to Shikamaru. “So high-risk equals actually crazy?”
Shikamaru smirked. “We’re
all a little crazy, or we wouldn’t keep trying to run from our life of
privilege. Those ones are just the ones
who are dangerous.” Shikamaru pointed to
an almost timid looking girl. “She’s a
sociopath. She tried to drown her cousin
when she was 13, and didn’t feel bad or anything.”
Sasuke shrugged. “Sounds
like my brother.” He sighed and went
back to reading his book. He wasn’t sure
why he was so comfortable with Shikamaru, but he seemed to have some kind of
connection with the boy. Maybe it was
because he was perfectly content to leave Sasuke alone while they were
together, but Sasuke felt like he could really get along with this guy. It would be the first person other the cousin
his brother had killed. He sighed. He wasn’t going to get anymore reading done
while thinking about Itachi. “Going back
in. Can I sit with you again at lunch?”
Shikamaru nodded. “Yep. They ring a bell for lunch, too. Just a warning.”
Sasuke nodded and walked back into the building. He wouldn’t focus on Itachi. He had to find something more distracting
than reading to do. As the door buzzed
for him to go back to his room, he thought about the boy he’d seen being pulled
out of the courtyard. Despite being
crazy, he was attractive with that bright red hair and piercing green
eyes. If they’d met on the outside,
Sasuke was sure he’d have fucked the guy.
