every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird
please be save me I CRY

Chapter II There Is No Life Without Care
“I enjoyed fighting you.” Neji stopped drinking and put his flask on the ground then smiled slightly, his now loose hair falling around his body and with reddened cheeks from the fight, completely unaware of what the small action caused. Next his hand was grabbed and he landed on Itachi.
“Wha-“ Before he could even voice his question, he felt lips covering his mouth. His eyes widened and his body froze as he tried to process what was going on. Was he dreaming or was he really kissing Itachi? Hands, hardened from work, were placed on his cheeks and the gesture was just too kind for him to ignore, inviting and caring, something he was so unused to but felt wonderful. He shyly moved his lips against Itachi’s, the motions alien to him but he quickly found it not at all bad.
Itachi finally let go, not wanting to scare Neji away by moving too fast but he had to rely on his iron will as he looked at him half in his lap, eyes dazed and lips swollen. Apparently he hadn’t been wrong by kissing him.
“W-why did you kiss me?” Neji finally managed to form words.
“Because you’re the most beautiful and worthwhile person I have ever met. I would like to pursue a relationship with you,” Itachi said in his customary voice but knew he would get the hidden layers in his tone.
Neji gasped as he heard what he said but then remembered his fate, his duty towards the Sōke.
“I know what the seal on your forehead means. But what do you, Hyūga Neji want? If nothing else, you still have two more years before you will be forced into a marriage,” Itachi pointedly said, placing his hand under Neji’s chin and letting their eyes meet. And in those two years, I will make you mine in every possible way and never let you go.
Neji slumped down, torn between the choice he had to make. If he did choose to pursue a relationship with Itachi – an idea that seemed more attractive with each passing second, judging by the way he felt sitting here so close to him and how he had felt the past two months, he would indeed have two years but it would only make his forced marriage harder to accept. If he didn’t, he already knew he would probably live to regret not taking this offered chance of a taste of freedom.
He suddenly felt a feather-light kiss against his temple and his eyes fluttered close.
“Why would you put yourself in a relationship that you know will have to end eventually?” Neji voiced his doubts, his head still close to the other’s.
Itachi calculated if it would be a good idea to confess his full intentions but judging by Neji’s question, he had already decided in his favour. “Because I have no intention to let you get married off.”
Neji jerked his head up and vehemently shook it. “You can’t, you can’t do this to me. Don’t make a promise you can’t keep. Naruto promised he would help me but I already know he won’t be able to change my clan.” He wanted to stand up but Itachi wrapped arms around his waist and pulled him close. At the moment, he didn’t care that he sounded like a woman, he just couldn’t bear to hear a lie of someone that gave him his first kiss, someone that had made a crack into the walls that surrounded his heart so quickly.
“That’s why I won’t make a promise. I can only promise you the next two years but I will go to great lengths to keep you by my side.”
Neji looked at Itachi with his onyx eyes that were a contrast against his own pearlescent ones and as he saw the determination shining in those black orbs, he surrendered, willing to have at least these two years with him, with this handsome man that soothed him with just his presence alone and made him feel like never before, even the short time they had known each other.
Hesitantly, he leaned forward but was met half-way and soon their lips were touching again.
[-]
Neji ran to his clan’s compound, his hair still unbound and his heart beating against his ribs. It was still so hard to believe everything that had transpired this afternoon. In just six hours, he had made a decision that will at least change the two years to come, a decision he had made from his own desire. His mind went back to the many kisses that had been shared and he couldn’t prevent a small smile from creeping up. Itachi was a remarkable person for someone who was claimed to be cold and distant and Neji felt an unknown feeling run through his body. He would fight to keep these two years to himself.
He entered the main house and hurried to the dining-room. Sliding open the door, he was faced with the entire table staring back at him, most having a disapproving look in their eyes at Neji’s tardiness. Hiashi made a curt nod, indicating that he should sit down which he quickly did.
A plate was set in front of him and soon, all resumed eating.
“You look so rumpled, Neji-kun. Haven’t we taught you manners?” Hiashi lightly commented. He stared at his nephew, who didn’t meet his eyes but stared at his plate.
“Sumimasen, Hiashi-sama. I’ve just come from an intense training.”
“Is that so? Who did you train with? It can’t have been your former team-mates since I passed them just this afternoon.” Damn you, Hiashi-sama. Neji wondered whether he should be honest or not, knowing that lying could become a predicament since he wasn’t sure how much Hiashi knew or what Hinata told him. And judging by his persistence, he knew more than he should. His heart froze briefly, as he was left worrying if Hiashi had seen him and Itachi. It would explain why he asked who he trained with since he hadn’t before.
“I trained with Uchiha Itachi this afternoon, Hiashi-sama.” Now their conversation had the attention of the entire table. Hinata dropped her food on her plate as she stared at him from across the table. Neji gave her a warning glance to keep quiet, although he guessed she would in any case.
“And why would a prodigy, a talented shinobi like Uchiha Itachi train with you?” Even though it was a blatant insult, Hiashi still managed to make it look like an intrigued question. Neji couldn’t believe that no one looked at Hiashi strangely for what he had just said. No matter the tone, it still held the same derogatory meaning. All he could be glad for was that Hiashi apparently didn’t know everything as he saw the calm expression in his uncle’s eyes.
“I wouldn’t know.” Neji kept it at that and continued eating, glad to see everyone following his example.
As was customary, all waited until the last person had finished eating before leaving the table. Neji already wanted to walk to his room but was held by his wrist. He turned and wasn’t surprised to see Hiashi glaring at him. “Meet me in the office in half an hour.”
Neji wrung free and walked straight to his room, determined not to let this bring him down. He wouldn’t let this day be spoiled, this day that in his eye, was already as important as the day Hiashi let him know the truth about his father’s death.
He slid the door closed behind him and brushed his hair, gathering it in the typical low ponytail and put on a clean gi and trousers. Someone knocked on his door hesitantly and he immediately knew who.
“Come in, Hinata-sama.” The girl entered and she was already blushing madly and tapping her index-fingers together as she always did when she was nervous.
“Neji-niisan, I w-was wondering…if you and Itachi….” She let out a deep sigh as she finally got the sentence out.
Neji shook his head, an incredulous expression on his face. Of all the people he had at least thought Hinata would believe his lie about sleeping on the training-grounds. “Why don’t you believe me?” He was careful to keep his voice calm, knowing that otherwise, he would never get an answer out of the girl.
“It’s just th-that Sasuke is so convinced and… Everyone is wondering about it.”
Neji slipped in his sandals. “Sasuke is an insolent lying brat. Now, if you’ll excuse me. I have a meeting with Hiashi-sama.” He left his room, leaving Hinata behind and fought the urge to go over to the Uchiha-compound and strangle Sasuke with his bare hands. Such as it was, he arrived at Hiashi’s office with clenched fists and gritted teeth. Hiashi apparently sensed his presence because he heard permission to enter before even knocking.
“Close the door.” He obediently did so and went to kneel on the pillow across Hiashi. A hand came up and slapped him hard on his cheek. He made no move to avoid it and let his head roll with the movement.
“What do you think you’re doing with that Uchiha? He surpasses you in every aspect and he is still a member of a rivalling clan. Why do you insist on going against my wishes and our clan’s plans for you?” Hiashi hissed.
“Sumimasen, Hiashi-sama. I was foolish to believe that I could provide Uchiha Itachi a challenge by training with me.” There it was again, that voice inside his head that agreed wholeheartedly with Hiashi’s words. He hung his head, the glorious feeling from before slowly disappearing and making way for something much more familiar.
“Don’t think you’ll still be able to train with him because I will know and I will punish you for it. Now get out.” Hiashi made a waving motion with his hand as if darting off an annoying bug. Neji bowed and left the room.
Why did it always have to end like this? He straightened his shoulders. No, he would change the end himself, the end of these two years. He would indulge and he would choose.
Itachi narrowed his eyes as he saw Hiashi with a content smirk on his lips, staring at his nephew leaving the room. It all became clear now; the marks on Neji’s cheeks and wrist, the defeated tone with which he spoke of his family. He was going to get Neji out of his cage, even if he had to single-handedly break each bar.
[-]
“I know what your uncle does to you,” Itachi stated. He had found Neji practicing his kicks on a tree trunk at the training-grounds and had led him deeper into the forest and into a tree for coverage where they could talk privately.
Neji looked up at him with carefully shielded eyes but it was clear that he was frightened that someone knew and Itachi felt a surge of anger towards Hiashi. Neji shouldn’t be scared, not with his talent and intelligence. He guessed that the abuse must have been going on a long time for Neji, a normally proud creature to have this reaction.
“It’s nothing,” Neji tried to wave it off, trying to shield his eyes from Itachi’s penetrating stare but he felt a hand on his cheek and a kiss on the top of his head.
“It’s not nothing, Neji. He’s the reason you nearly drowned yourself in the river. What has he been telling you?”
Neji looked at his feet but in a way, he was grateful that someone he already considered close to him had been the one to find out after so many years. For a brief moment, he was once again marvelled at the speed things were progressing between him and Itachi, both naturally distant and with a personality that was difficult to decipher. He had always thought this, a relationship would be impossible on both sides but Itachi’s presence was too kind to ignore.
“I’m a disgrace to my clan, he says.”
There was a moment of silence before Itachi responded. “And do you believe him?”
Neji shrugged. “Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.” His head was lifted and a kiss was placed on his lips.
“Don’t let him control your fate too much. He has a power over you but you still have your own.” Itachi gazed at him and Neji felt the same unusual feeling from yesterday starting to stream through his veins and then, for the first time in a long time, he actually fully believed in his own strength again. The last time he had was during the invasion of Konoha by Orochimaru and Suna, when he was fighting against Kidōmaru, one of the Sound-nin and nearly died. And Itachi didn’t lie to him by saying he was completely free to do as he wished, as many other people did.
Purely acting on instinct and feeling, he reached up slightly, grabbed Itachi’s face and kissed him. He felt compliant lips moving against his and then a tongue asking for entrance. Neji tentatively felt a slick muscle entering his mouth a bit and he brushed his own against it. The initial moments weren’t very pleasant but then, as he gained confidence, the hairs on his arms stood up because it was so overpowering to surrender to another person in such an intimate and heartfelt way.
Itachi wrapped an arm around his waist, closing the distance between them and Neji gasped as he felt a hard chest pressing against his, Itachi immediately taking advantage by intensifying the kiss. Neji was so lost that he was glad for the support around his waist, fearing that otherwise he might fall on his knees. Itachi raked his free hand through Neji’s long hair, pulling out the band that held it together and revelled in the touch of pure silk running through his fingers. Oh, how lucky he was to have Neji respond to him so quickly after their first meeting.
Then, finally Itachi pulled away, showing that same small smile again but it grew larger as he saw Neji staring back at him, eyes glistening with exhilaration.
“Beautiful,” he whispered. He gave another deep kiss, pulling Neji as close as humanly possible. He feared briefly that Neji would try and escape his tight grip but he just melted against him.
“I have to leave on a mission soon. Normally I should be back in two days. If you’re not on a mission, meet me at the river at ten o’clock.” Itachi let Neji go and jumped down to the forest-floor. Neji looked after him and slid down against the tree-trunk to sit on the branch. Yes, I would like that.
Someone landed next to him and he didn’t even turn around, already recognizing Shikamaru.
“Two prodigies, I guess it makes sense,” he heard being muttered.
Neji now turned towards him. “How much did you hear?”
Brown and calculating eyes looked at him. “Everything. But I won’t tell. It would be too troublesome.” And it’s not mine to tell.
Neji nodded. “Thank you.”
“Sasuke keeps yelling that you slept with his brother.” Shikamaru snorted. “Nearly everyone believes him though so you’re going to have to be more careful if you want to keep this a secret.”
Neji stood up and looked for a hair band, since Itachi seemed to have taken his with him. Shikamaru retrieved one from his vest and handed it to him.
“Why is Sasuke so upset over it?” he asked while tying his hair.
Shikamaru leaned against the tree and lit a cigarette. “Because it means he’ll have to share Itachi’s attention with you. He’s just being his typical egotistical self. Troublesome.”
Neji huffed. “He’s fifteen. He needs to grow up.”
“But then you did sleep in Itachi’s bedroom.” A blush formed on Neji’s pale cheeks, although his facial expression didn’t betray anything.
Shikamaru laughed and shook his had. “If anyone ever finds this out, you have the entire female population of Fire Country chasing you with burning sticks.”
“That’s why you need to keep quiet.”
“I won’t say a word. Just be careful of Kiba. If you met him now, he would immediately smell Itachi all over you. Well, I’m off, going to go cloud-watching. Don’t forget our mission in three days. But you can still meet your boyfriend first.” He childishly stuck out his tongue and for the first time when teasing him, Neji laughed and smacked his arm.
“Go, you pest.”
As Shikamaru hopped from tree to tree, he mulled over the conversation he had accidentally heard and seeing Neji look more relaxed. It was a small miracle what Itachi had accomplished in two months and Shikamaru was honestly glad for them. They both deserved a break from the high expectations everyone was counting on for them to fulfil. But it would become very troublesome if anyone else found out and decided to let their respective families know. He could only hope they would be prepared if, when that time comes. Luckily, Neji knew him well enough to know that he and Itachi could count on him should they need help.
[-]
Itachi waited for Neji, resting a bit after his two-day mission, which went smoothly but his team had had to travel a long way, barely stopping for rest. He looked in the direction of the Hyūga-compound. The reason he had pushed his team so much was so he could be back in time to meet Neji.
Then he saw someone nearing and immediately recognized the chakra-signature. Soon, someone sat on the floor next to him.
“How was your mission?” Neji asked, his face partially hidden behind his long hair. Knowing that Itachi would probably take off the tie, he hadn’t bothered to put one in. And as he sat here next to the man, he realized how much he wanted Itachi’s hand raking through his hair again.
“It went smoothly. How have you been?” He picked Neji up by the waist and easily placed him in his lap, effectively making any discomfort between them disappear.
“I’m good.” By using a present tense, he hinted that it was because he was here with Itachi.
Itachi softly grabbed Neji’s face and kissed him deeply, glad to feel those warm lips on his again. “I take it your friend Shikamaru knows about us?” He had sensed the other’s presence easily but he knew Neji was relatively close to him.
“Yes. He won’t tell.” Neji secretly was glad that at least one person knew about them.
“In one week, I’m leaving on a mission again, A-rank. I requested you to come along, since you’ll be back from yours by then. It will be a two-man team and it will take about four days.”
Neji opened his mouth slightly in surprise. “But won’t Tsunade-sama notice anything then?”
“I constantly request people for my missions. As long as I don’t ask you every time I have a Jounin-mission, she won’t suspect anything.”
“You request team-mates constantly?” Neji lifted an eyebrow and Itachi smirked back at him.
“Just wait a few years. They’ll ask me to become Hokage.” It had a sarcastic tone to it and Neji let out a laugh.
“You’re sounding like Naruto,” he snickered. Itachi looked pleased at the beautiful boy in his lap, happy with himself to have invoked such a reaction from him.
“Don’t compare me to that kid. He’s annoying.” He turned Neji in his lap so he was lying with his back against his chest.
“He means well,” Neji murmured as he looked out onto the river. And he honestly meant what he said but he also knew that the promise Naruto had made to him had been said more in a boisterous exclamation than it being an truthful statement. Yet, part of him still wanted to believe. “He’s just…loud.”
“He’s a ninja and he wears an orange jumpsuit. So much for stealth,” Itachi grumbled. Neji twisted his head so he could see him better. Now he could see how tired Itachi looked, the skin under his eyes having a blue shade, accentuating the peculiar lines near his nose.
“Have you slept at all?” he wondered.
Itachi shook his head and kissed him again, thereby abruptly interrupting Neji’s thoughts as he willingly moved his lips along. They soon were facing each other again as they continued kissing but Neji’s movements halted and he scrambled off of Itachi’s lap with burning cheeks.
Itachi already guessed what was going on and dragged the protesting and embarrassed boy back in his lap. “Neji, calm down.” Neji was still twisting, desperately avoiding his crotch touching Itachi. Resorting to the short pain, he forcefully pulled Neji’s hips down, making Neji let out a whimper at the friction his growing erection received.
He had to bite his lip since his own hardening cock clearly appreciated the move. He kissed Neji and made him stop trying to escape. They both let the touch give them a momentary reprieve, their hips unconsciously beginning to grind against each other. It only added to the wonderful sensations now coursing through their bodies but before anything more could happen, Itachi stopped his movements, giving Neji kisses all over his face. Seeing Neji slightly out of breath and his eyes half-closed and glazed over, made him regret stopping and he attacked his mouth again, much more aggressively and Neji only moaned in their interlinked mouths, his body feeling incredible, all embarrassment from before forgotten.
Their hips ground together faster and tremors occasionally coursed through them. Itachi let his hands slip under Neji’s gi and stroked the soft but strong expanse of skin and moved his mouth to his neck, getting a strangled moan out of Neji. The pace became more frantic and erratic as Neji searched for something he didn’t even know and Itachi for that rare moment in which his mind drew a complete blank.
Itachi removed his lips and stared at a trembling Neji who had wrapped his arms tightly around his neck, holding him close as he came closer and closer to completion. His hands, still buried under Neji’s yukata, grabbed the boy’s slender hips and guided his movements, eyes never wavering from his face. Neji clenched his eyes shut as he sensed tingles in his toes that were starting to move upwards and his mouth fell open, back arched as his whole body shook and his brain seemed to explode. Unbelievable, Itachi thought as he saw Neji orgasm. Just unbelievable… That was the last coherent thing his mind could formulate as it was his turn to climax, his jaws clenched and his hold on Neji’s hips tightening.
He felt a body slumping against his chest and he wrapped his arms tightly around it, allowing himself just a few more moments.
[-]
“So, how are you doing?” Shikamaru asked as he poked the rabbit hanging over the fire with a stick. He yawned and looked over at Neji. While he wasn’t one to usually ask these things, he had to admit that he was slightly curious. Itachi had always been someone to look up to but was always out of reach, placed on a pedestal. To now see him romantically involved with Neji of all people would interest anyone.
Neji smirked. “I am fine. How are you?” He heard Shikamaru mutter.
“I would be a lot better if I could be sleeping in my bed right now. But I heard you two are going on a mission together.”
Now Neji had to blush and Shikamaru snickered. “I see. So, how are the sleeping arrangements going to be?” he asked laughing. Neji slapped him on the arm.
“Shut it, Nara.” Shikamaru slowly sobered up as he grabbed the rabbit and cut it evenly into four pieces, handing one to Neji and laying two near the fire to stay warm; the other two team-mates were still placing traps around their camping-site.
“I heard what Sasuke said to you the other day.” Shikamaru said it idly, biting in the roasted meat.
Neji shrugged. “Better not to give it any attention. It will only make people more suspicious. And it’s just how Sasuke is.”
“Troublesome.” He glanced over at Neji and noticed that he had stopped eating. Shaking his head, he nudged him. Neji got the message and continued eating, although for the rest of the night, his mind was elsewhere.
[-]
“Aniki, do you want to go training?” Sasuke peered inside his brother’s room to find him whetting his kunai.
“I don’t have the time to train with you.” Itachi looked up, his Sharingan meeting Sasuke.
Sasuke stomped closer to him. “You never have time for me anymore! You’re always on a mission and if you aren’t, you disappear.”
Itachi laid down the kunai and the whetting stone – he always did prefer to sharpen his weapons himself – and gave his brother a cold stare. “Grow up, otouto. You no longer need me to hold your hand every step of the way, do you?”
Sasuke’s shoulders sagged. “It’s because of that Hyūga, isn’t it?”
“If you don’t have a sensible thing to say, leave.”
“I know what I saw, and that Hyūga was sleeping here in your room!” Sasuke shouted. He was becoming furious with his brother’s remote attitude.
“Leave, Sasuke.”
Sasuke burst out of the room and sprinted out of the house and towards Naruto’s apartment. At least he believed him.
As Naruto saw a fuming Sasuke, he quickly let him in. Before he even had to ask something, Sasuke started yelling. Naruto could faintly discern Neji’s and Itachi’s name and he knew enough. He suppressed a sigh and dropped down next to him on the couch. “There’s nothing wrong with Neji, you know? He’s a good guy,” he tried.
Sasuke gave him a glare that made Naruto reconsider his sentence. “I mean, you know…”
“No Naruto, I don’t know.”
Naruto scratched the back of his head but he blinked as he thought how stupid he was acting, regaining his confidence that some liked to call idiocy. “Why are you so pissed? Do you really think two of the coldest people in Konoha are going out? Kakashi-sensei no longer reading Icha Icha seems more believable. ”
Sasuke’s mouth fell open slightly. “So you don’t believe me?”
“I believe what you said about seeing Neji in your brother’s room, it’s just-“ Before he could finish his sentence, Sasuke stood up.
“I’ve heard enough.” He briskly left the apartment but Naruto ran after him.
“Oi, teme. Come on, come back here! Don’t make me drag you!”
“Shut it, dobe. That asshole of a Neji slept in my brother’s room and now he’s stealing my brother away from me,” Sasuke shouted from atop the roof across the street.
Naruto watched Sasuke jump over the roofs and shook his head.
[-]
“So, ready for the mission tomorrow?” Itachi asked. Neji was sitting across from him, both cross-legged and their knees touching.
He nodded. “It’s just retrieval, right?” A hand touched his cheek and he looked in front of him to see that small smile again. Neji went to lean against Itachi, slightly hesitant in his movement but reassured as he felt an arm being wrapped around his shoulder. “It’s going to be good to get away from here.”
The arm tightened minutely. “What happened?”
“My wrist again.” He didn’t need to explain any further. Itachi immediately knew what he was talking about; Hiashi hurt him again. As much as he wanted to kill the man for hurting what was his, for damaging someone so utterly and painfully beautiful, the risks involved with doing so would be too great and could jeopardize everything. Even for a skilled assassin as himself. However, if he needed to kill him in two years to keep Neji by him, he wouldn’t even have to think twice. Looking at the boy in his arms, he clenched his jaws and breathed in deeply through his nose. I will get you away from there. I’ll crawl to the end of the world if I have to, but I will. The only thing he could be glad for was that Neji trusted him enough to say what was troubling him. At least he could provide a momentary relief.
“You okay?” Neji bent his head and smiled a bit.
“I’m better now. Looking forward to tomorrow.”
Itachi gave him a kiss, trying to put as much reassurance and care in it, although he was new to this himself. He wasn’t a virgin anymore, hadn’t been for a couple of years already but this was the first time that it went beyond physical pleasure.
“If we hurry, we might have some time to ourselves. Now go home and get some rest. The Hokage is expecting us at six to give the briefing.” he easily lifted Neji as he stood up and gave him a last kiss.
“Sleep well, Itachi,” Neji softly said. Itachi loved how his name sounded on those lips and stole another kiss.
[-]
Itachi entered his house and noticed the lights were still on even though it was nearing midnight. He carefully stepped to the back of the house and as he neared the kitchen, he could see his parents and Sasuke apparently waiting for him. Sasuke didn’t meet his gaze and was stubbornly staring at his feet.
His father motioned him to sit down with a stern face. He kneeled near the table and fixed him with a cold stare, satisfied at seeing his father flinch slightly. After all these years of urging their son to become stronger, his parents now were scared of him, scared of what he could do, of his silence, his eyes.
“I was walking down the street and heard Sasuke talking to that demon-vessel.” He spat out the last word, hating Sasuke’s friendship with Naruto. Itachi had been the one to support Sasuke in doing what he wanted when the then twelve-year old got a scolding from their father for befriending the demon-carrier.
“What is this nonsense of a Hyūga sleeping in our house?” Fugaku didn’t raise his voice, as he would had he been speaking to Sasuke but anger still seeped through. If there was one thing the man was passionate about, it was the honour and strength of his clan. Itachi hated him for it.
“I wouldn’t know,” Itachi finally responded. His mother gave him a smile and he reminisced for a split second that if his father and the clan hadn’t been in the picture, he could have felt love for the subdued woman. But she was still frightened of him, he could see it in her hesitant movements whenever she was around him or how she would freeze as he brushed passed her.
“Don’t ever let me hear a rumour like that again, understood?” Itachi nodded and stood up, walking to his room. He soon heard footsteps behind him.
“What, Sasuke?”
The sound died down. “I’m sorry, aniki. He was never meant to hear it.” The distress was clear in his voice. Itachi turned around and flicked his brother’s forehead before walking away. Sasuke was left behind, a hand on his head. He smiled relieved, knowing that Itachi wasn’t mad.
As Itachi lay in bed, he picked at the hair tie he held around his wrist and thought about the coming mission. They, he and Neji would both be glad to get away from here.

His cheeks were blazing but he at length muttered an answer. “I’m not ready for that.”
“I’ll never force you to do anything you don’t want to, Neji.” Itachi said it so sincerely that Neji couldn’t help but believe him wholly.
