Chapter One: Officially Broken Up
Shikamaru stayed in the warm embrace of his best friend for a long time. He couldn’t bring himself to speak about what had happened. The thoughts were racing through his head too fast for him to fully contemplate them anyway. He was a genius, but he couldn’t figure out where this had all gone wrong. He groaned and dropped his head to that of his friend’s below his. “Why does it hurt so much?” was all he could whisper out.
Neji sighed. He pulled Shikamaru tighter against his body. He knew his friend was hurting a lot. He’d put almost a year of his life into an almost one sided relationship. The worst part was that Shikamaru didn’t see what his friends had seen: Sasuke had been using him. Neji was privy to more information about Sasuke and his home life than most people. He had understood wanting to keep the information from the guy’s parents. Maybe Sasuke hadn’t been ready to come out yet, and Shikamaru had respected that-so he could. Still, no one who loved another person would let them get the reputation as a rapist. He squeezed Shikamaru once before tugging him to his feet. “Let’s go home, huh? Your parents are probably worried about you.”
Shikamaru allowed Neji to tug him to his feet and nodded. He turned dark, pained, chocolate eyes to his friend. “Thanks, for everything, always.” Neji nodded. They had been best friends since he could remember. There was no need for the thanks; Shikamaru would have done the same if the situation were reversed. Shikamaru raised his head slightly when he felt a familiar chakra. Tears stung his eyes, blurring the shape before them, but still he would have known that presence anywhere.
Neji grabbed Shikamaru harder, helping the guy stay on his feet. He turned toward Sasuke. “You’ve done enough to him. Just let him be.”
Sasuke scowled at Neji. “What would you know about it, Hyuuga?” He turned toward Shikamaru. The scowl didn’t change, but the tone of voice was softer. It spoke more to Shikamaru than words which were uttered, “If this is your decision, I can’t change it. I wish you’d reconsider.” The soft tone it was spoken in told Shikamaru he was hurting Sasuke a lot. Sasuke wanted nothing more right now than to be held. He’d been with the guy long enough to know. Shikamaru also knew Sasuke would never say it aloud.
Shikamaru shook his head. “I’m sorry. I need to be with someone who isn’t ashamed of me. If you had said something, anything to Naruto, your best friend, when the opportunity arose, we wouldn’t even be in this situation. You said nothing. You let him accuse me of raping you. You were the one who needed that time and those touches. You were the one who convinced me to be intimate with you in public, and you were the one who let them call me a rapist.” The tears were threatening, but the more he said it out loud the more the emotion of sorrow was replaced with anger.
Sasuke’s scowl never left his face, but he nodded slowly. “Then I’ll be by for my things from your place tonight at 7. You can leave them at the door if you want.” With that he turned and walked away. There were tears in his eyes, but he would not let them fall, not yet. He needed to go somewhere private before that could happen. He couldn’t let anyone see him break. The only person who had ever seen that was the guy he had pushed too far. He knew he should have told Naruto that it was consensual, but for some reason he couldn’t find the words. While being his best friend, Naruto was also his biggest rival. He had been, unreasonably it later turned out, afraid that he would not be accepted if it were known he was gay.
Neji waited until Sasuke was out of hearing range before he whispered, “You are doing the right thing, Shika.” He sighed as his friend choked back a sob. He knew things were going to be worse before they were better. He yearned to hold his friend as more than friends. His feelings for Shikamaru had surfaced long ago. He never said anything, for fear of wrecking their friendship, and he still planned on say nothing. He knew if Shikamaru had had the same feelings, he would have found a way to let him know. Shikamaru could come up with thousands of ideas and the outcomes of those ideas within minutes. Though he didn’t care about his school work, it was because he was more or less too smart for the material they covered.
Shikamaru nodded beside him and smiled, sadly at Neji. “I know.” He pulled from Neji’s embrace and smiled slightly larger and happier. “Want to come over for supper. I might need your support later.” His mind was lingering on how painful it would be to gather Sasuke’s belongings and then to have to see Sasuke once more to return them. Later his parents would ask him to tell them what was going on, but he wouldn’t be able, at least not yet. They would understand and not push him, or at least his father would, and his father would also keep his mother from pestering him too much.
They were at Shikamaru’s house before he realized it. He smirked at Neji. No words were exchanged, but the look said everything. ‘Here goes nothing’ was written plain as day on Shikamaru’s face. He pushed the door open and hollered toward the kitchen, “Neji’s here for dinner.”
Yoshino stuck her head out from the kitchen with a large smile on her face. “Shikamaru, you should tell me these things before you bring your guest over. Will Uchiha-san be joining us as well?” Shikamaru only shook his head and ran upstairs.
Neji looked over at Yoshino and bowed slightly. “Thank you, Mrs. Nara for allowing me to dine with you.”
She nodded, but frowned. “Is Shikamaru all right?”
Neji shrugged. “He’ll tell you about it when he’s ready.” He bowed once more before ascending the stairs as well. He paused as he heard soft crying from Shikamaru’s door. Pushing the door open, he saw Shikamaru sitting on his bed with one of Sasuke’s shirts balled up in his hands, pressed to his face. Neji knew Shikamaru’s heart was breaking hard. He may not care about many things, but those he did care about he put his entire being into. He didn’t take betrayal lightly, and what Sasuke had done had felt like betrayal to the ponytailed ninja, well soon to be ninja. He was going to graduate this year, thanks to his sensei, Asuma. He’d seen that there was more than poor grades to Shikamaru’s academic abilities. Once he was graduated, then he could be a ninja.
Shikamaru looked up as Neji opened the door. Seeing Neji gave him the needed strength to let go of Sasuke’s shirt and find the other belongings the Sharingan user had left behind. He put them all together in a box, but would not just leave them outside the door. He wanted to tell Sasuke why this had to be. He’d explained it all before, twice, but still he couldn’t help but feel guilty. He knew it was because he was leaving someone he really loved, but that still didn’t change his mind. This break up had to happen, for his good and for Sasuke’s.
Neji smiled as reassuringly as he could whenever Shikamaru would pick up an item of particular significance. Tears actually fell from his eyes as he saw Shikamaru break down when he took the shirt that Sasuke wore when he slept over from on top of the pillow next to Shikamaru’s. He knew that no one else was allowed to touch that shirt, and he also knew that its presence brought Shikamaru peace. It was part of his boyfriend, even when his boyfriend couldn’t be near. It always smelled of Sasuke, and Neji knew it was going to be hard for Shikamaru to sleep without it.
Finally the box was packed. Shikamaru brought it to the door just as his father came home. He saw how drawn and worn his son looked, saw the box of Sasuke’s things, and put two and two together. He nodded at his son and Neji. “I’ll keep your mother off your back for a few days.”
Shikamaru nodded his appreciation. Shikaku sighed. He had known that Shikamaru was going to be hurt by the emotionally stunted man he’d been dating. Though he had seen Sasuke smile once or twice, he usually had an air of indifference or disgust. Shikamaru, on the other hand, had been completely invested in making the relationship work; in helping Sasuke be comfortable enough to be open about their relationship.
Then the day came that Shikaku had heard a rumor that his son had raped one of the other students. He’d come home furious; not at Shikamaru because he knew his son better than that, but at Sasuke who could let such a rumor go on. He’d told Shikamaru that if his boyfriend could let a rumor like that go, he was only going to be hurt. A person like that couldn’t be capable of a real, loving, two sided relationship. He’d expressed all his feelings and still Shikamaru wanted Sasuke. He would not treat his son’s boyfriend the way he felt like treating him after that. He would, for Shikamaru’s sake, still treat him as they had before that.
Neji and Shikamaru sat down to watch TV. They knew Sasuke would be by in the next half hour or so. Neji waited. He would be strong for Shikamaru. He would be the shoulder to cry on after Sasuke showed up and before dinner was ready. The Naras usually didn’t have dinner until 8 or later. Mostly it was due to the fact that Shikaku often didn’t get home until nearly that time every day. The fact that he was home early today was an oddity, but appreciated none-the-less.
There was a knock at the door. Shikamaru took a deep breath, swallowed his nerves, and stood up. He opened the door to see a frazzled, though no one else probably would have noticed, Sasuke standing at his door. Sasuke’s eyes narrowed a fraction when Neji came to stand behind Shikamaru, placing his hand on Shikamaru’s shoulder for support. “Hyuuga,” he spat out icily. Neji’s eyes narrowed even more than Sasuke’s before he nodded curtly. Sasuke’s eyes softened just a miniscule amount. “I’ll take my things now.”
Shikamaru nodded and before he knew what he was doing, grabbed Sasuke and pulled him into a hug. The tears flowed freely as he whispered, “Good bye, Sasuke. Good bye.” He let go of a confused, but determined Sasuke. Shikamaru turned to the warm embrace of Neji and let it all go. He let go of the months of confusion and pain and anguish and all the good things, too. He let go of Sasuke.
