Disclaimer:
I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Broken Promises
A/N: We are going to pretend like Naruto does not wear that stupid orange jumpsuit thingy. He wears an orange t-shirt with the Leaf Village symbol on the front and... I don't know... black shorts?
Now: I will continue posting up to chapter 3. I do belive that it will be a good chapter. After that, I need someone to tell me if it's a good story before I continue. If people continue to read it, but not comment, then I will stop. I was serious when I said this chapter will be kind of strange. It skips from one scene to another, in order, but I only did that to get the point across. The third chapter is where the action really begins.
solitar1: Thank you for giving my my first review for my first story ever! And it was a good one! Although I don't think Chapter 2 is all that great, but that's really up to you.
Chapter Two: Promises Broken
1984. Sasuke 12, Naruto 12
Konoha, first meeting of Team 7
(After introductions)
Naruto stared at Sasuke. More specifically, Sasuke's right wrist. No matter how many fights they got in, Naruto and Sasuke kept those bracelets on. That was the only thing that kept Naruto's hope up. Sasuke wouldn't wear it if he didn't want to be friends, right?
"Sakura, you look like you have a question," Kakashi said calmly, keeping an eye on the two boys. Iruka had told him that they don't get along.
"Will you go out with me, Sasuke-kun?"
"No."
"How about dinner tomorrow?"
"No."
"What about-"
"No."
Naruto cut in before Sasuke did something un-Sasuke like. "I'll go out with you, Sakura-chan!"
"NO!" With that, she hit Naruto on the head.
"Sakura-chaaaan, that hurt." It's a good thing I don't really like you.
"Good!"
Kakashi looked at Sasuke's bracelet, then Naruto's. "Sasuke, where did you get that bracelet?"
"A...person." Sasuke didn't want to say 'friend'. He's not supposed to have one.
Naruto glared at the back of Sasuke's head. Person? We were best friends, damit! And we promised that we'd be together forever.
This did not go unnoticed by Kakashi, who looks undereth the underneth. "Naruto, what about yours?"
"I got mine from a friend!" He gave Kakashi a bright smile. I'm going to prove that I'm your best friend, and you're going to like it.
Sakura thought more about the bracelet than who it's owner was, and grabbed Naruto's hand. "Wow. This is beautiful!" She reached out as if to touch it, but Naruto jerked his hand away by reflex. He has never let anybody touch it, and never will.

Wave Country; after fight with Haku
When Sakura calmed down enough to notice that Sasuke wasn't dead, she got off of him. Looking at his hands, she realized that she had never got a good look at his bracelet. She was two inches from his wrist when...
"Don't touch it." Like Naruto, he had never let anybody touch it.
"Sasuke-kun! You're okay!" Sakura tried to hug him.
"Get off me."
Naruto looked behind him. He's okay. And as protective of his bracelet as I am of mine. He smiled. Maybe they really could become friends again. He did promise that we'd be together forever.

Chunin Exams; Forest of Death
"What the hell?! Nobody told me that there would be giant snakes in this place!" Naruto started yelling from his spot in a snake's stomach. "If you're so hungry, have a rice ball." He got one out of his bag and tossed it a few feet in front of him. It dissolved withing seconds. "Oh yeah, this will look good. Uzumaki Naruto: Eaten by Snake. No, that won't happen. I have to get out of here. I can't help Sasuke if I become snake food. We haven't finished our rivalry. I haven't had a chance to prove that I'm strong. I can't help Sasuke kill Itachi if I'm dead!"
Naruto had been glancing at his wrist every five seconds. "Now how do I get out of this thing?" "Naruto, if you eat 10 bowls of ramen per meal, you're stomach's going to explode." The blonde kitsune gave a sadistic smile. "Let's test that theroy. Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!"
There were too many Narutos for the snake to stomach. He made a mental note to clean his bracelet as soon as he got back to his teammates.

Sasuke stabbed himself, using the pain to overcome the fear. After distancing himself and Sakura from Orochimaru, a part of that fear lingered. He had the sudden urge to cuddle with Mightyena, but pushed that thought aside. Thinking of Naruto, the dobe was no where to be found.
He better be okay. We're not finished yet.

Hospital roof; Sasuke vs. Naruto
Even as the oversized chidori headed straight for Naruto, the dark gems of the bracelet contrasted against pale skin, lit by surrounding blue chakra.
The Eye of the Fire Fox still shone, now reflecting the look in Naruto's eyes.
Neither boy thought about removing them. They were childhood presents. Sasuke, who had to grow up too fast, needed something to cling on to, something to prove that he was happy once. And Naruto wasn't about to let go of the best thing that had ever happened to him.
No matter how much they fought, the boys still cared for each other.

Valley of the End
Naruto was fighting to stay consious, at least a little longer. He could barely move, and the rain was getting in his mouth.
"Sasuke...." His voice was barely above a whisper, but the raven heard it. "You promised that we'd be together forever."
"You also made a promise. A promise to die if it helped to kill Itachi."
Naruto paused, then shakily held out a kunai. "You're right, I did promise. And I never go back on my word."
"....No, I won't kill you. But I won't come back, either." He almost walked away, but remembered his bracelet. After taking it off, he dropped it on Naruto's chest. "I have no reason to kill somebody that's not my best friend."
Our little kitsune heard 'I won't kill you', and let the darkness take over. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, Naruto felt the soft thud on his chest. Kakashi arrived a few minutes later to see an unconsious Naruto holding something. Upon closer inspection, it wasn't just any something, but Sasuke's friendship bracelet.
Naruto woke up on Kakashi's back. "Kakashi-sensei, where's Sasuke?" When nobody answered, he opened his hand. "He really is gone." We pinky swore that we'd be together forever.

Orochimaru's current lair, Sasuke's new room
After closing the door and making sure nobody was around, Sasuke took an object out of his bag. Undoing the genjutsu, Mightyena sat proudly in the middle of his bed.

A/N: The 'point' that I was trying to get across is how important the friendship bracelets are. Like a little kid and his security blanket. As long as he has the blanket, than nothing can hurt him. As long as the boys have their bracelets, they'll be friends.
This was to show why that one simple action affected Naruto so much. At least, that was what I was aiming for, weather it worked or not is your opinion.
Now, on to the third chapter. It has the setting of the last few pages of Manga Chapter 307, but different words.
