Chap. 1

[[Chapter 1, enjoy.]]

Even in sleep he couldn't find peace. The faces that haunted him made sleep impossible. Even over the four years he'd been gone they had never left. Sakura, Itachi, Orochimaru and even the annoying blonde. They cursed him, killed him endlessly, tortured him and even laughed at his pitiful weakness, or that's what the snake and his brother did. They called him weak, unstable and a child. Never any peace, never any silence. He knew that's what he'd deserved but he would never admit it, not even to himself.

It was strange though...he should be dead. The dead don't have nightmares do they? All to suddenly his eyes opened a fraction and be became fully aware. Taking a gander at his surroundings, Sasuke was surprised to find that he had an audience. There was of course the blonde woman, whom assumed the position of Hokage in Konoha after the third was assassinated, then there was that familiar orange book with the tips of gray hair protruding from it and last but certainly not least, a pink haired girl he would never forget.

"Well it's about time brat." There was a heavy glomp to his head and he growled under his breath. "Watch it or I will put you out for good." Her tone was annoyed, slightly happy and evidently, curiously angry. "You have a lot of questions to answer Uchiha Sasuke but for now we will start with a welcome home and you're under arrest. Treason, assault and battery on a fellow ninja and murder are just starters." There was a sickening smile on the Hokage's face as she announced all of this and he suddenly wanted to just go back to the nightmares.

Of course he wouldn't get out of it but he sure as hell wasn't about to explain his situation and about the- wait...where were they? As quickly as he could Sasuke sat up and looked around frantically trying to find them. His face looked impassive but his eyes showed the franticness of his thoughts. Where were they? When he tried to move out of the bed he found himself bound to it. He tested them and found there was no use. They were chakra enlaced.

"Where are they?" His voice was calm and he closed his eyes trying to calm his inner turmoil.

"Who?" A glare was sent at the blonde who played at cautiously curious face.

"Stop playing games with me woman and tell me where they are." His voice turned deadly, full of the acid his mind was trying to calm from his system. Opening his eyes so they were slits, Sasuke glared at the Fifth waiting for an answer.

"I have no idea who you are talking about Uchiha brat so if you would so kindly-"

"Don't lie to me!" He lashed out as much as he could, which being bound as he was, wasn't much at all and when he did, Sakura and Kakashi were at his sides, hands ready to make seals if they had to. "Give. Me. My. Babies." He bit out each word slowly, carefully and laced with as much malice as he could. Sakura gasped, Kakashi did a double take, obviously not believing what he'd just said, not that Sasuke cared much and the Hokage just stared at him.

"SHIZUNE!" There was a scuffling and the assistant appeared in no time. "Bring them here."

"But Hokage-sama I don't think that-"

"I didn't ask for your opinion, bring them here!" Shizune flinched but nodded. "Hai."

Sasuke mentally breathed a sigh of relief and in moments, two screaming, white haired, black-eyed babies were brought into the room. "Unbind me." Sasuke looked at the Hokage and tugged his wrists.

"I can't do that."

"They won't stop crying if you don't." It seemed as Sasuke said that, said anything at all, the screaming got louder.

"How do I know you won't try to kill everyone in this room including these infants?" Tsunade's gaze was serious, her arms moving to fold over her chest and her stance tilted just slightly.

"Hokage-sama, I'm not stupid." Simple words and he meant every bit of them. There were two jounin level ninja in the room, one of which seemed ready to put him out of his misery, Sakura who would help him, and the Hokage herself. No, he wasn't an idiot. "Unbind me."

Tsunade moved a hand to rub her forehead and sighed. "Shizune, place the children on the bed and leave. Kakashi, Sakura, you are both dismissed. Don't wander." Shizune and Sakura both had the immediate reaction of babbling but Kakashi simply nodded and poofed out.

"NOW!" Sakura visibly cringed and nodded, poofing out as well and Shizune didn't argue further but placed the screaming infants on the bed and used the door. The Hokage walked over and waved a hand over the binds on Sasuke's arms. When he was free, Sasuke picked up both infants, holding them close to his chest and he sighed. They were safe. That was all that mattered.

"You have some explaining to do kid." Sasuke just sent a glare her way. "You can do it now or when your wounds are better, you can do it with Ibiki. It is your choice but if you want my opinion-" Sasuke grunted, "I would do it now and get it out of the way."

Sasuke looked to the two, now silent and half asleep babies in his arms and then to the bed in front of him. "It doesn't leave this room."

"I will be the judge of that." Tsunade glared daggers at the injured Uchiha and he glared right back.

"Fine." Moving to cross his legs, wincing only slightly at the pain in his abdomen, Sasuke started talking. His voice was smooth, monotone and utterly emotionless as he explained why, of all things, he was back.

Three hours later, Tsunade stepped from the room and summoned Kakashi and Sakura back. "Sakura, find me Naruto. Kakashi, get me Hyuuga Neji and Nara Shikamaru and then I want the both of you back here immediately. You are to be silent of what's happened here and under no circumstances are you to announce that our famous Uchiha prodigy is back." They nodded and poofed out of her office. "Shizune!" Tsunade sat down at her desk, hands rubbing her temples.

"Hai Hokage-sama?"

"Get some infant formula, pure water, bottles and some clean diapers. When you're done with that I need you to summon the council members for an emergency meeting." Shizune nodded and stepped out. Looking to the right side of her desk, Tsunade pulled open the bottom drawer and picked up the bottle of sake she kept stashed. Instead of drinking it from a cup, she just drank out of the bottle, not pausing to take a breath. It was going to be a very, very long night.

"It is decided then. He stays. There can be no argument. He has returned for good and taken back his misdeeds."

"You are an idiot! He left the village! He cannot stay and he should be put to death!"

"Shut your trap old goat. Right now he is a valuable asset; his brother is rouge and will not be returning at all so as the last of his clan, he must be allowed to stay, procreate and bring the Sharingan back to Konoha."

"Second."

"Third."

"Fourth." There was a cursing as the councilwoman was out argued and out voted. "Fine. Unanimous."

"This meeting is done. Thank you all for your time." Tsunade stood, cracked her back and walked out of the room to her waiting shinobi. "Nara, Hyuuga, you are both on guard duty of that room. The only one to go in or out is me. I do not care what you hear- ignore it, rationalize it or do whatever it is you do but you are not to look in that room do you understand?"

"Hai." The two shinobi moved to either side of the door. Shikamaru sat down and pulled a cinnamon stick out from his pack. He stuck it in his mouth and pulled out another, offering it to Neji, "Want one?" Neji regarded the stick of spice for a moment then nodded, taking it and sticking it in his mouth.

Tsunade sat down abruptly in her chair, hands rubbing her temples. She was out of sake; her mind was moving miles a minute and she still had yet to see neither height nor hair of Naruto. Where was that boy anyway? Just as she thought it, Sakura came in, dragging a very much unconscious Naruto behind her. There was a large lump on his head. "What did you do Sakura?" She had the curtsey to blush but as she moved her hands to scratch her head and shrug, she dropped Naruto.

"OW! Sakura-chan...why are you so mean Sakura-chan?" He sat up and rubbed the bump on his head. She glared down at him and he winced. "I said I was sorry!"

"Well you should be you-you...HENTAI!" She slapped him again for good measure, crossed her arms over her chest and glared.

"Where were you two?" Tsunade's voice had taken on an agitated tone.

"Well, I started by looking all over town for him and what did I find? No Naruto. Then, I took to looking again and you know where I found him Hokage-sama? In the ladies bath...pretending to be a woman!!" The Blonde broke her desk, Neji and Shikamaru winced and Naruto covered his head.

"UZUMAKI NARUTO! I should-" She walked over and slapped him hard enough to send him sailing into the door behind him. "Rank D missions for a year!!" In her anger, it took the Hokage a moment to register the crying from behind the closed door. It was getting closer. She frowned.

Pulling himself up off the floor and cursing his horrid luck, Naruto looked to see Shikamaru and Neji in an offensive stance, the door they were standing next to opening slowly. The Hokage was glaring at the door, almost looking like she willed it to close itself but it kept opening. "Neji, Shikamaru, stand down. I guess now is as good a time as any." Mumbling curses to herself, the Hokage called for Shizune to get her a new desk and a few more bottles of sake. She was rethinking her plan every moment. First, she didn't want Sasuke to be revealed until it was absolutely necessary but he seemed to have another idea. She would get him for that, just how, she wasn't quite sure.

The sound of something hitting the floor brought her attention back to the door. She noticed two cinnamon sticks on the floor and held back a slight chuckle. Sakura was looking away from the door, trying to guard her face and when the Hokage finally looked Naruto, he was standing, hands balled into fists. The conflicting emotions on his face were a dead give away as to what he was thinking. A small cough brought her attention back to the door. In each of his arms lay a crying baby and there stood Sasuke. He said nothing and his gaze was directed to the deep blue eyes looking dead at him.

In seconds, Sasuke was cursing, Sakura held both infants, Shikamaru was holding Naruto at bay with his Shadow jutsu and Neji was holding Sasuke back. "That's enough you two." Naruto didn't look at Tsunade but growled, and tried with all of his might to break away from Shikamaru's jutsu. The predominate emotion that covered his face was anger. Unadulterated anger. She looked to Sasuke and he was wiping his mouth and slowly walking out of Neji's restraining grasp.

"Your annoying voice woke them up." He gestured to the crying infants. Naruto blinked and looked over to Sakura who was humming and swaying side to side. His gaze dropped to who she was humming too. The crying had stopped and he noticed slightly pouty faces. White hair, black eyes and pale skin. Babies. Tilting his head he looked closer. They were oddly familiar faces...he just couldn't place it. His attention was grabbed by the Hokage, who cleared her throat.

"As much as this is a surprise to all of you, get over it. Shikamaru, let him go." Shikamaru gave a wry glance back to Naruto and sighed, releasing his jutsu and went to stand back at his place by the door. A frown marred his features as he remembered his lost cinnamon stick. Pulling out another, he popped it in his mouth and leaned, hands in pockets, against the doorframe. Neji stood up straight and went back to his post, arms crossing over his chest, mind obviously working hard to figure out what was going on. Sakura let out a sigh and walked over to Sasuke, handing the babies over to him and walking to stand next to the Hokage.

"Well, I guess there is no need for formal introductions as you all know each other." There were two grunts, a nod and nothing else. Naruto was staring at Sasuke and Sakura was staring at the floor. "It seems that our missing prodigy has returned. The circumstances are his to explain when and if he wants to." She looked at Sasuke who nodded to her once. "As for the two babies in his arms, well, I guess those are his to explain as well but moving on." She sat in her chair, looking around for something to lean on and gave up, looking back to the shinobi in her office. "This is top secret. Beyond top secret. The reason you know about his return is because you are all on guard duty." A truly evil smile curved her face. "Uzumaki Naruto, since you have seriously tried my patience with your latest stunt, you are going to be the twenty-four hour guard posted with Sasuke. Between the two of you, I think you can figure out where you are going to be living for the next few...well...anyway." She looked to Neji and Shikamaru. "You two are on rotating watch duty for the next five weeks. You will have no other missions and I will find your teams fill ins. I don't care how you work out the schedule but you will be watching out for Sasuke. No one is to find out he is back and he is not to leave his place of residence for any reason. Sakura, you will be coming and going to keep an eye on the twins’ health and make sure that Sasuke is healing correctly. There will be no arguments on your assignments, no questions and no complaining." She looked to Shikamaru, "I don't care if you think it's troublesome." Shikamaru looked away, arms moving from his pockets to cross in front of his chest.

"Listen here Baa-chan, I am not staying with-with him!"

Tsunade glared at Naruto. "I said no complaining brat and I meant it. You will do as you are told or I will have you put in the dungeon for all of Sasuke's probation."

"How long is that?" Naruto just slumped down, defeated and started his incessant whining.

"I haven't decided yet." Naruto groaned and Sasuke just scoffed at him. "Still the same as always."

"What did you say teme?!" The blonde perked right up staring at Sasuke with one fist ready to hit something.

"I don't like repeating myself dobe." Sasuke stared at Naruto, his eyes and face betraying nothing. He was already cursing himself mentally for all of the talking and lack of self-control he'd had since he'd been back even though it wasn't entirely his fault.

"Just wait until you aren't holding little whiny things teme." Naruto looked away and crossed his arms over his chest.

"What are you going to do about it dobe? Nothing like always?" Naruto looked at Sasuke and was starting to move towards him when Tsunade yelled, scaring the babies and making them cry again.

"UZUMAKI NARUTO AND UCHIHA SASUKE! STOP ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF CHILDREN AND START ACTING LIKE THE SHINOBI YOU WERE TRAINED TO BE DAMN IT!" She moved to slap them both in the head but Naruto dodged and she moved to punt him like a kick ball and he went flying out of the office door that time. One gray haired jounin, nose in his orange book, leaned inside the doorframe and gave a thumbs up. "I believe that was a home run Hokage-sama." Something small and circular flew at the jounin's head and narrowly missed. Kakashi went back to his post mumbling something about hormones and blonde women, eyes reading over the book he'd read a thousand -and one- times. Tsunade growled at Kakashi but looked back to the occupants still in her office.

"Your mission starts tomorrow. You have until dawn to prepare. The rules have been set you are dismissed." Shikamaru and Neji used the broken door, Kakashi peeked in and waved his goodbye and poofed away, Sakura said goodnight to the Hokage, took one last peek at the infants and then walked away giving Naruto a glare that could stop a bull in it's tracks and Naruto just rubbed his head with one hand while he held his stomach with the other. "When did you get so mean Baa-chan?" He whined and stood, looked at Sasuke and then away. "I can't say I hate you teme because I don't, but I can't say I like you much either. When I can give you a proper welcome home be ready because it isn't going to be easy." With that, Naruto left a shocked Tsunade and a glaring Sasuke behind.

"I think I should thank that perverted old bastard...." Tsunade shook her head and yelled at Shizune to get a new door on her office. Sasuke stared after Naruto wondering why he sounded so...smart? Grown up? Shaking his head he looked at the Hokage who looked at the two quiet bundles in his arms.

"Have you named them yet?" She ushered him into the room quickly and shut the door. When it was shut and she was sure there was no one coming inside the office she turned around and leaned against it in a very Shikamaru-like pose. Sasuke gently crawled onto the bed and sat crossed legged with the twins still in his arms. He would have liked to lay them down because they were starting to get heavy but he couldn't bring himself to let them go just yet.

"One and Two." Tsunade choked and patted her chest. "You can't be serious Sasuke."

"I am."

"Oh come on. One and Two? Don't they mean anything to you? They are your children, your babies and they mean so little to you?"

Sasuke just looked at them both, one face then to the other. He could tell them apart but Tsunade couldn't even after the physical examinations, tests and everything else she'd run on them. One and Two fit. It was appropriate...okay maybe not but it worked. Sighing inwardly Sasuke closed his eyes and thought. They meant something to him...yes and then again no, they didn't. He wanted them dead in the worst way but he couldn't do it. He couldn't sacrifice these innocent lives...his innocent lives. He was attached. They were his through and through.

"Aito and Hikime. One and Two."

"I think Aito could go but, I guess it fits for a girl." Tsunade frowned. "One thing Sasuke, who was the father? Well, other father?"

"I don't know Hokage-sama." It hurt his pride to admit but then again the snake wasn't very telling in his tales or experiments.

"Get some sleep Sasuke, we have a very big day tomorrow and you need to be well enough to move out of sight." With a nod just to herself, Tsunade stepped out, into the still empty office and shut the door behind her.

Grunting in mild relief, Sasuke leaned back and carefully scooted down on the bed, wincing once or twice but he ignored the pain and got comfortable. With Aito on one side of his chest and Hikime on the other, he patted their bottoms and his eyes fell closed.

Blessfully, his dreams were blank.

It was the first time in four years.
