The street lamps flickered continuously in sync with the fireflies that loomed around them.
The sky glowed purple from the fresh rain.
On and off—on and off. A continuous cycle that would never end.
His shoes splashed a mud puddle.
He followed his instincts. Every twist, every turn felt like it was predetermined.
But that’s no surprise—fate has already decided.
His knuckles rapped gently on the eroded door and then turned the knob.
The bells chimed.
“Welcome,” a rather deep voice greeted.
“Hello,” Naruto greeted in his informal attire. He was carrying a worn-out blue backpack. The zippers did not function anymore. One could see the contents in the bag if it had not been covered by an orange cloth.
“Here, come in, have a seat,” the one with crimson eyes, offered warmheartedly. From the bottom of the staircase, he could see another pair, as if he was concealing himself in the darkness but Naruto could see—he sees it all.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Itachi politely said in a rather rehearsed way, “I’m Uchiha Itachi.”
“I’m Uzumaki Naruto.”
Itachi stared at him pensively analytically. He had once known the cause of Naruto’s arrival but the truth has long since buried over time. He poured a bit of tea into the teacup that sat elegantly in front of Naruto’s torso and did the same with his own. He had spotted Kakashi as he made his way here. Contently, he directed the conversation towards the blonde teenager. Naruto’s information was at the tip of his tongue but he could not identify it but Itachi knew. He knew that today was the day.
“You are probably wondering why you are here,” Itachi began his usual explanation but paused for an affirmative answer.
To his surprise, though not shown on his countenance, Naruto had replied the opposite, “I was sent here.” His callous tan fingers played with the rim of the teacup as he grasped it and took a greedy sip. Droplets of tea slid down his chin as he drank but he wiped it off with the back of his sleeve.
“My grandfather,” Naruto said solemnly, “he had just passed away a month ago.”
“I am sorry to hear that,” Itachi said sympathetically. If he was lying, he was doing a good job faking empathy, that is which Kakashi had noted as he enthroned himself on the shelf that overlooked the two. Kakashi sat stiffly, his front paws perched his spine to a curve. His black and red eyes stared onto the scene before him, mocking Sasuke who was not allowed to experience this customer’s visit.
“I have returned home one day to do some packing for a journey, if you could call it one. One to become stronger. Anyway, I had found a letter under the box of my bed. Then it all made sense to me on how he nags me to clean my room. He never cared much about anything else.”
Itachi’s teacup cracked.
“To ordinary people, it may as well have been a letter of gibberish. It was only jargon that the three of us have used. It ordered me to come here.”
That was it. Itachi’s memory was fully refreshed.
“Never mind that,” a more cheerful voice than his prior attitude, “have you heard of time travel?”
“Indeed I have.”
“Is it… possible” Naruto asked hesitantly, “to travel back in time?”
“It is too costly to even attempt. I would not like to sound offending but never if your life or anybody’s life is equivalent to the travel through the passage of time. The future could be predicted, perhaps even a glimpse of it. It is against one of the seven laws to allow someone to transcend backwards into time. There is only tomorrow and beyond.”
“I have not intended for it to sound like I would want to travel throughout time,” Naruto assured.
“You do know what this is a place of, am I correct?”
“Yes. Yes, I do.”
“Are you familiar with the saying, an eye for an eye?”
“It depends on what you are implying.”
“This is a shop that is based on the bartering system.”
“So, you scratch my back, I scratch yours?”
“Precisely.”
Naruto paused and focused his gaze not on Itachi’s eyes but on the teacup in front of him seemingly, an inner battle.
“What do you desire most?”
The sky was waning into a deep shade of darkness. A gust of wind blew in through the window, knocked on the top window plane as well. The branches quivered in fear from the night sky, shrinking as if to take shelter.
The bells chimed.
No two snowflakes are alike.
His pair of crimson eyes bored into the scene of his brother’s and Naruto. His ears desperately walked into the sitting room or they may have well have with his acute senses.
Sasuke had concluded that Naruto was a bad omen. He was a walking, alive one in fact.
They called it a natural disaster. There was no him, Naruto was an it—‘It has arrived,’ rather than ‘he has arrived.’ A natural disaster is avoided at all costs, hence the animals scurrying away.
It was speaking, a faint voice—“I want to know the truth and not just any truth. I want to know the absolute truth on why my family had died. The police closed the case and said that they were freak accidents but I know they weren’t. I was there. I need to know more information by whatever means necessary.” His voice contained a hint of misery in it. It was a miserable soul.
“How did he die?” Itachi asked blatantly.
“I’m sure you already know,” Naruto said hotly, “he said you would.”
“Whatever means necessary… those three words could cost you your life. The wish can be granted but at a price.”
“As long as you can make it happen, I’ll do whatever you tell me to do,” Naruto pleaded rather than bargained.
A paper crane appeared in Itachi’s palm. With his palm, faced down, he ushered the paper craned across the table and placed it in front of him.
“By taking this, you have officially entered into a contract with Uchiha Itachi. If you have no objections, than please unfold the figure.”
The naive boy unfolded the paper and pocketed it.
He had no idea what he had just got himself into.
The bells chimed.
Naruto shifted under his covers uncomfortably. He fidgeted, trying to get into a relaxing, comfortable position but failed every time. It felt foreign to sleep in another bed; the environmental difference was too great. Frustrated, he kicked the covers off—it was noon anyway.
He smoothed the wrinkles off his clothes and wandered around his new room. It was different, that was all he could say.
Almost everything was wooden—it gave him a sense to connect with nature. He slid the balcony door open and looked at the village that he had left. He scowled at the excess sunlight that hit his eyes and shut it quickly.
He went over to the desk and picked up a mirror. He was amazed at how dark his eyes have become.
“Good morning,” Naruto had almost dropped the mirror due to surprise. It was a light and mature voice. He put the mirror down and turned around.
Nobody was there—well except for the cat but that couldn’t be possible.
“Good morning, Neko-san,” Naruto said very lightly as he crouched down to pet the cat. He found this unusual.
The little grey cat purred but snapped itself of out pleasure, “breakfast is ready and I have a name—it’s Hatake Kakashi.”
Naruto would’ve dropped the cat out of shock if he wasn’t so sleep deprived. He wished he had a change of clothes as he tiptoed lightly down the creaky stairs. Making noise in a foreign environment can be a death sentence.
There was a nice aura in the kitchen. It wasn’t cozy or homey but it felt soothing as everything was laid out in perfect portions, equilibrium.
Itachi and Sasuke had already begun eating, in silence. It was strange.
By this time, Kakashi had already settled down on to the chair, in his human form. Naruto raised an eyebrow.
“You don’t expect me to eat cat food, do you?”
“I suppose not.”
Everything continued on in silence.
Silence is golden.
Naruto sat there, and waited until everyone was finished eating and cleared the dishes.
It was ordinary. The sponge in his hand went in an up and down motion—it was orderly.
Sasuke watched him as he sipped his tea. It was unsweetened. He disliked sweets. It was too addicting.
The task was easy yet Naruto had inspected the dishes and claimed it to be completely clean. The lad held one up with his left hand and smiled at his own shadow of a reflection. He rinsed his hands clear of the detergent suds and sat back down.
There was a serene silence—the sounds of nature. Naruto decided since nobody was speaking anyway, he closed his eyes… just for awhile. His arms were made into a makeshift pillow as he slumbered away.
Seconds had turned into minutes and minutes had turned into hours.
He was running endlessly in the deep black sea, trying not to fall in. His arms and legs propelled him further than ever had before.
The sky was stained black, as if a permanent night had emerged and ate up the whole world. He could not see, he could not hear nor could he speak. He was just running.
The impact that his shoes made ripples on the water—he was running on water.
Naruto had stopped. He couldn’t see a thing and didn’t understand why he was running. It was as if something compelled him to.
His sudden stillness caused the water around him to cave in on him, to push him down further.
Suddenly, he heard a faint humming sound. It was coming from underwater. The cold substance embraced him as he fell.
Naruto held onto his breath and frantically tried to swim back up. What was up or down, he did not know anymore.
There was light again.
Naruto could see. He let out a gasp, his lungs were about to explode from the lack of oxygen. He breathed in sharply. Sweet oxygen filled his lungs and he was bewildered. He was underwater.
The light had illuminated from the bottom of the sea. The hum was getting painfully louder as he approached. He sunk down, slowly. The sound was deafening. He covered his ears. It became more of an annoying ring than a hum.
The lower he got to the glow, the more details he saw. It was a city unlike any other.
There were outlines of palaces and houses scattered all about.
When he had landed a small, red crane was floating in midair. There were no people around, nobody whom he could ask for directions.
The crane zoomed past the streets as Naruto ran with it. That thing had a mind of its own.
The houses were made of brick and stone with arched shingles upon the roof. They were not uniform.
He had recognized the character for happiness. It was written in bright red paper and was on every door that he had run passed. The character was hung upside down—“to arrive” it means.
Naruto stopped in front of a giant gate. It was a giant arch. The words on the top read Ocean City.
The red crane unfolded. Naruto grabbed it hastily and pocketed the paper.
He saw shadows.
Naruto opened his eyes. It was nightfall.
He was staring directly into Sasuke’s red ones.
In the darkness, it emitted an eerie glow.
Sasuke was sitting where he had sat before, still holding onto the cup that he was drinking tea out of earlier, before Naruto had fallen asleep.
Neither of them broke away, they continued to stare.
Sasuke scowled and got up. He swiped the cloak that was on top of Naruto’s body.
“Bastard,” Naruto wondered what got into him but ignored it. His lack of sleep had caught up to him earlier and his back hurt like hell.
The bells chimed.
Both on alert, they went into the den. That was where Itachi was conducting his business.
Naruto had remembered the words Itachi had spoken yesterday, “From today on, you will abide to my rules and your wish will be fulfilled at the end of servitude.” He wondered how long would that be.
Itachi was sitting in the same chair that he had sat in two days ago, conversing with another customer. He wondered when it all would end.
The customer was a young blonde woman with similar blue eyes. She was wearing a purple dress and sported a high ponytail with long bangs. She seemed demanding yet there was something missing.
“Is he the one?” she asked as she pointed towards Naruto. He stood out from everyone.
“Yes, he is,” Itachi turned his head to face Naruto and beckoned him to come forward with two fingers.
“Naruto-san, I would like it if you were to help Ino-san out.” It was more of an order rather than a request.
“Sure, what is it?”
“It’s nothing special,” Itachi said as Sasuke had pulled out a highly decorated full length mirror, “Take her hand and lead her through this.”
Ino stood up in her high heals and walked towards Naruto. Naruto took her hand and dipped his other hand into the mirror. To his surprise, it disappeared. It looked like it melted right through the mirror. He pulled it back out and examined his hand.
“Alright, here goes nothing,” Naruto took in a deep breath and walked through.
Naruto and Ino had melted right into the mirror until it was reflective once more.
“Are you sure this isn’t too soon for the boy?” Kakashi asked.
“No, he will be fine. I see potential in him,” Itachi answered and watched the mirror.
“Where are we?” Ino had asked.
The setting was familiar with Naruto; he darted towards the gate from the path.
The golden arch gate that read Ocean City.
