“Ruka! Rukarukaruka!”
Iruka barely had time to turn and catch the energetic blond that flew at him with a grin, tails flailing behind him. “What is it, Naruto?”The boy opened his mouth but then closed it when he noticed a young man sitting across from Iruka, black hair framing dark eyes and a deceivingly nice smile. He bowed his head in acknowledgement to the stranger and turned back to Iruka. “They said I’m to be a Guardian.” There was a moment pause, and then, “What does that mean?”“Well, for one, everyone here is a Guardian. Guardians have certain people that they watch over in the mortal world and stay at their side to protect them and sometimes they have entire cities to watch over. Some of us, like Kotetsu here,” he nodded to the man across from them, “Are waiting for their Masters to be done with tasks.”“Tasks? What tasks?”“My Master works with the police and I can’t be at his side at this time,” Kotetsu answered.“What about you?”“I know who my person is, but he hasn’t had enough energy to call upon me yet, so I wait for him.”The background noise in the room quieted faintly and Naruto looked up to see a strange expression on a redhead’s face, as if he was listening to something in the distance. He then disappeared in a flurry of sand, leaving behind a bemused blonde teen and a dark haired young man.“Gaara’s person has apparently just awakened their powers. They must be fairly young too…”“Why does everyone else know their Master?”“Because most of us have been Guardians for many centuries, kit,” Kotetsu answered. “You’ll have to go through training before you can go find yours, but it shouldn’t take long with Iruka helping. You’ll have to learn how to hide most of your true form and how to use your powers properly. When done correctly, even other Guardians couldn’t tell what you are.”“What are you then?”Kotetsu gave another smile. “Guess.”Iruka rolled his eyes. “Kotetsu here is a Dragon Guardian. Me… I’m going to let you guess what I am.”Naruto pouted. “No fair.”He was about to say something else when Kotetsu got the same faraway look on his face as the redhead had. “I need to leave now. It was nice talking with you, Iruka. And nice meeting you, Naruto.” Kotetsu ruffled Naruto’s hair before turning and walking away, disappearing in a swirl of wind.“Were you told anything else, Naruto?” Iruka asked, trying to hide his grin that appeared at the young boy’s scowl.“Yea. Tsunade-baa-chan said to stay with you until she can talk to you.” Sapphire blue eyes got wide as they gazed up at Iruka. “Can I really stay with you?”“I see no reason why not.”“Yatta!” Naruto jumped off of Iruka, cheering, and ran to the exit of the room. Iruka was hard pressed to catch up with the young boy, hoping to stop him before he went somewhere that he wasn’t supposed to.oOo
Iruka yawned and stretched his shoulders, feeling them pop slightly and sighing in relief as the ache began to go away. While it was true that he was happy to let Naruto stay with him, the kid was pure energy and didn’t stop until a few minutes ago when he merely sat down on the couch in Iruka’s public area and was asleep within moments.A soft knock on his door to the outside changed his course to his room and he blinked in surprise when he saw Tsunade standing outside. After glancing to the open door to Naruto’s room, he stepped outside to stand with the powerful Guardian, one hand keeping the door open.“When Naruto mentioned that you wanted to speak with me, I wasn’t expecting it so quickly.”“That boy is strange. Why did you bring him here?”“There was no one else around. There wasn’t a Guide around the area, and I was afraid that the pain that can be found at a hospital could have pulled him over to become a Dark spirit. While I was surprised at his appearance, it would make sense.” Iruka shook his head slightly, getting back to the question. “Since I was the only one around, I brought him here since this is the only area of the Spirit realm that I have access to. I figured that either way, you would be able to get him to where he needed to be.”“How did the boy die? No matter what happened, there should have been a Guide there…”“I couldn’t tell what happened. He wasn’t injured, and he’s told me that he rarely got sick, if ever. He was a healthy, normal, eight year old until today.”“How many lifetimes have you gone through before you were able to become a full-time Guardian?”“About four, I think… You don’t mean to say…”“While it’s uncommon for a person to go through one lifetime before having enough power to become a Guardian, for it to happen while so young is unheard of.”“Do you know why he died so early?”Tsunade grimaced. “While I do have some theories, one is most prominent. The moment a Master’s powers activate, a Guardian is pulled to their side. Something must have happened for Naruto’s Master to pull on his power and call him. And while Naruto was apparently powerful enough to be a Guardian, he was still mortal at the time. The pull on the spirit did enough damage to the body to kill him, but the call must have ceased since the boy was still near his body when you found him.”“Poor boy…”They both fell silent for a moment, the area around them quiet enough for them to hear a soft whimper coming from Iruka’s living area. Iruka turned to go to the young Guardian but stopped when Tsunade placed a hand on his arm.“I was hoping that you would raise him and teach him, Iruka. I know that you haven’t taught anyone since your last lifetime, but the boy seems to be attached to you now.”Iruka smiled and nodded. “I would be honored to teach him, Tsunade-sama. Thank you and good night.”oOo
Naruto cried out, kicking against the sheets of the bed and was immediately enveloped in warm, strong arms. A hiccupping cry left him and he collapsed against Iruka, clutching the other’s shirt in his small hands. One hand rubbed his back while Iruka hummed softly and Naruto began to calm down, only an occasional sniff escaping now.“Would you like to talk about it?”Naruto was quiet for a few minutes before he quietly said, “There was blood everywhere. It hurt me and I didn’t see anything else.” He looked up to Iruka for a moment and the brunet could see fear battling with embarrassment in the blue eyes. After a few moments, Naruto asked quietly, “Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?”“I’ll stay with you until you wake up if you want.”Blue eyes lit up. “Really?”“Really.” Iruka slipped into the bed beside Naruto and the young boy curled up next to him. The nightmare was still fresh, so Iruka tried to distract the boy’s thoughts from what he saw. “What did you do when you had a nightmare when you were alive?”“Mama would come in and ask me about it while papa stood by the door. I would act tough so mama wouldn’t be scared. But when she went to sleep again, I’d go to the TV room and papa would be sitting in his chair with a blanket.” The boy snuggled closer to Iruka, smiling softly. “Mama would find us in the chair every time and she’d just complain about the TV staying on all night. Mama told me that papa would have nightmares before I came and he would always be in that chair in the morning.”“Well, if you ever wake up from a nightmare, you can come find me any time. The other Guardians around here will help you too, if you need it.”Naruto yawned, and smiled sleepily. “Okay. Night, Ruka.”“Goodnight Naruto.”oOo
The next morning in a little used area of a park, after eating breakfast, Iruka was slightly surprised to see Naruto sitting in front of him, pay attention to every word and gesture. With his experiences with the younger Guardians, they wouldn’t care about learning anything. But then again, they had memories of dying older when they weren’t so attached to a person. To the eight year old, Iruka was the only thing familiar in the strange place.“What all do you know of Guardians?”Bright blue eyes looked up to him with eagerness. “Nothing!”“That… is a good thing. That way, we have nothing to correct and you can learn things the right way. What about different languages?”“I know Japanese, and mama and papa were teaching me some English. They said they were gaikokujin.”“We’ll continue with those languages.”“Why?”“You’re fluent in Japanese for your age, and we’ll continue with your English since you have learned some it from your parents. You can understand people here, but that’s because we’re in the Spirit realm. Once you leave the Spirit realm, that ability doesn’t stay. If you actually listen to other Guardians carefully, you can tell that they’re using different languages. But along with the languages, you’re going to learn how to fight, hand to hand combat, and the molding of your chakra. One of the first things you’ll learn is how to conceal your form so that you appear normal.”Naruto’s expression turned sad and trouble. “I’m not normal?”“No, no, no! It’s nothing like that. Other Guardians won’t think anything strange by seeing you walking around with your ears and tails. But if you were to be noticed like that in the mortal world, you would attract a lot of unwanted attention. You do not need to be visible the entire time in the mortal world, but there will be people who can see you no matter what.”The look he got at that was slightly confused and Iruka decided to wave it off, planning on explaining it in better detail later. For now, he would teach Naruto to hide his form.oOo
Iruka smiled slightly as he soothed the blond hair out of Naruto’s face, paying more attention to the book in his hand than anything else. The blond managed to last most of the morning, four hours or so, being concealed in a henge under his own power before he merely sat down by Iruka and fell asleep, his powers exhausted. It didn’t surprise the older man that Naruto lasted that long. What did surprise him was the fact that Naruto learned to do it within a few tries. He took to Iruka’s teachings like fire to dry wood, which in the end will probably cause mayhem and destruction. And Iruka wouldn’t have it any other way.The henge was near perfect. Naruto could easily hide his ears and tails with it, but the one feature the stubbornly stayed was the three whisker-like scars on each cheek. Iruka didn’t get a good look at Naruto’s mortal body before leaving to tell if the marks were there before Naruto died, but the blond didn’t think anything of them either way.A soft noise attracted Iruka’s attention and he looked up to see Kiba and his puppy edging closer to them. The canine Guardian looked young, but only because he went through his entire last lifetime before dying and being reborn directly as a Guardian.“He won’t bite, you know.”Kiba looked up, slightly surprised, and straightened from hunched over sneaking pose, walking over to them. “He might. He’s a fox after all.”“Right now, he’s merely lost and confused. He only arrived here yesterday.”“His and mine don’t get along well, either way,” Kiba muttered, looking down at the puppy at his feet.“Just give it a try, Kiba-kun.” Iruka reached over and gently shook Naruto’s shoulder. “Wake up, kit.”Blue eyes blink slowly and Naruto sat up, rubbing his eyes before yawning. “Time to go home?”“Hardly kit. Would you like to play with Kiba and his puppy while I go make lunch?”“Sure…” Naruto looked to them with an uncertain expression before a smile lit his face up. “I’m Uzumaki Naruto!”“Inuzuka Kiba. The is Akamaru.”“Will you really play with me?”“…Sure.”“Wai!” Naruto bounced up from his seat and grabbed Kiba’s hand, dragging the other Guardian to the area near the woods, Akamaru calmly following behind.“Practice your henge, Naruto!” Iruka yelled at him before he got out of hearing range and the odd pop noise that spoke of an activated henge answered him. Standing up and stretching, Iruka left to go find them something to eat. And with the amount of energy that Naruto used, he was going to need a lot.oOo
Iruka silently shut the door behind him, letting Naruto take another nap before he made supper for the both of them. All afternoon, he had a feeling that something was off but he couldn’t place what it was. Iruka continued about his place, putting things away and generally organizing everything that was left out when grief and sorrow hit him tenfold, forcing him to sit down.He could feel the pull on his powers and while he has been waiting for his Master to call upon him, Iruka’s only thought was Not now!The pull immediately lessened and Iruka sighed softly. While the call took some of his strength, he gave it willingly. His Master wasn’t calling on him, but was still experiencing a massive emotional shock. Iruka closed his eyes, shuddering slightly as the sorrow clung to him.Small hands cupped his cheeks and Iruka looked up, surprised, to see Naruto standing in front of him with a sad expression. The small boy took a step back, wiping away the tears that ran down his cheeks.“Why are you crying, Ruka?”“Did I wake you?”The blond shook his head. “Something felt weird and you were crying when I came out. What happened?”Iruka opened his mouth to answer but the anguish came again, nearly as strong before and all that Iruka could do was hide his face in his hands as his shoulders shook with barely contained sobs. He hoped that Naruto wouldn’t be so worried about his mentor breaking down in front of him, so he was shocked when short arms hugged him close and a soft voice whispered soothingly to him.It took a while for Iruka to calm down again, and when he did, he smiled tiredly at Naruto who was beside him on his knees on the couch. “You didn’t have to do that, kit.”“Mama and papa would do it for me. It’s unfair that you didn’t have anyone, so I wanted to do it.”Iruka gave a watery chuckle as he wiped the wet tracks down his cheeks and Naruto’s cheeks. “What a pair we make, ne? Are you okay?”“Yea. What happened?”The older Guardian shrugged. “My Master just experienced something that hurts, I think. He must have been really sad for me to feel it, and I must have projected it too. I’m sorry you had to experience that.”“Do you have to leave?”“No. I lent him my strength, but he didn’t call on me. You’re still stuck with me.”Naruto sat back slightly on his heels and studied Iruka for a few moments before asking, “Do you want some ramen?”That got a startled laugh out of Iruka. “What?”“Ramen. Papa always made me ramen after I cried. He said it helps him and mama would make it for him.”Iruka pulled the small boy close, hugging him tightly and getting a soft yelp in protest. “Thank you, Naruto. But I think I should make it. You couldn’t reach the stuff for it without a footstool anyway.” He ruffled the blond’s hair before getting up and moving to the kitchen, smiling as he heard the soft footsteps behind him. The sorrow was still clinging around him, but with Naruto close by, he could bear it easily.oOo
Chapter two! I hope it’s okay and not too confusing. If there are parts that are a bit confusing, comment on it, and I shall either put it in the authors note of the next chapter or include more detailed explanation later on in the story.I'm not sure how an eight year old would talk. I have a seven year old sister, but I haven't seen her for three months, so I don't know.Gaijin is Japanese for foreigner, while gaikokujin is a politer way of saying foreigner… I think. That’s how I was taught it, either way.I pretty much know who are on the Guardian side of things, but I might need help on figuring out what their animal spirit form is. Some are easy to figure out, like Naruto’s, but others I’m very vague on figuring out one. I know exactly what Iruka’s is, though, and virtual cookies for the person who guesses it exactly. Don’t worry, there will be more clues further along in the story.
