Several Months Ago
“I hear you need a
partner.” Shikamaru did not look up. He slid another
piece into place, and kept his eyes low. He tensed a little when he heard the
offer, but other than that, he kept up his movements as if no one were there.
Kakashi had no
problem with waiting. It had been a slow month with menial work. He was just
looking for a challenge, something to bend his brain around. While 3pm Icha Icha had been, and still
was, a favorite pastime, Kakashi was only looking to broaden his horizons.
“I haven’t found
anyone who would do well enough against me.” Another piece clicked down on the
board.
“Well enough to
get beat every time?”
Shikamaru brought
his head up to face the man standing before him. With his eyes narrowed, the
dark irises looked larger. He glared as he took in a slight quirk in Kakashi’s
eyebrow. “What does he have to be amused
about? He was close to Asuma as well. I suppose he must have an interesting
sort of humor to tease a dead man.”
Instead of
apologizing, Kakashi released the tension and his stance with a sigh. A plain
expression covered his face, and alas, no more quirked eyebrow. Click. Shikamaru turned back to the
board. “Asuma was a good man. I’ve heard some of your friends tried to fill his
shoes out of kindness to you.” Click.
Kakashi walked over to Shikamaru, still placing pieces onto the board. Click. The playing pieces were worn and
smooth. The game had been used many times over the years. Click.
“Yes. They tried.
Most got sick of playing after a week or two. They were here to just play the
game…”
“And Asuma usually
played with something more, I suppose.”
Silence met
Kakashi’s ears before a brief, “Yes.” Click.
“What do you say I
try to play?” Click. Click.
Shikamaru looked
up after placing the last two pieces onto the shogi board.
“You can sit if
you’d like.” Kakashi nodded and took his place across from Shikamaru. He had
seen his friend sit here many times before. He had even witnessed Naruto’s attempt to sit here. The poor
kid. Squinting at the board and hasty in his movements, he lost quickly
to Shikamaru the first day and even quicker the next time. Yet, he kept coming
back. It was no shock to watch Naruto lose, amusing
even, but Kakashi noticed something about Shikamaru during those matches.
Irritation? Surprisingly, no. It
was happiness. While he seemed pleased with anyone who wanted to play him, he
seemed especially content when instead of just concentrating on the game, Naruto would strike up a
conversation. They shared details about the week, and Naruto
sputtered some gossip he heard at the ramen stand. And sometimes, they would
share a serious moment. For as wide as Naruto’s
heart was, Shikamaru’s was quiet and hidden beneath his words. Naruto was too dense to notice, but his heart came out in
those moments. Shikamaru was lonely, yet strong.
When
Shikamaru opened up, Kakashi took notice. The courtyard where he played was
quite visible from one of Kakashi’s favorite rooftops; a west facing, brown
thatched roof. Large and circular, it was one of the taller buildings in
Konoha.
Kakashi had long
ago taken up the hobby of “checking in” on his friends. Jumping rooftops,
waiting in courtyards, or even stopping at their apartment complexes, he knew
where most of them could be found and he always had a copy of his favorite book
to hide his true motive. He never let those close to him notice, lest he be
accused of attempting a more live-action perversion or nosey hobby. Even
Kakashi had to admit to himself one day that perhaps he was concerned a little
too much, knowing most all of the gossip that could be told, and having
memorized at least 25 peoples’ daily lives (and routes).
At that point, he
took up sitting on a west facing, brown thatched roof around 3pm which just so happened to still spy on at least one
individual. Perhaps his self imposed restriction on nosing in on others
business is why he became so intrigued with watching and then the idea of
playing shogi with Shikamaru. After finding that his Icha Icha
book drifted from its coveted place directly in front of his face to his lap
for several days in a row while noticing these games, he decided to confront
Shikamaru and ask him for a match.
Kakashi looked up
at Shikamaru who was intently watching him.
“You drifted off
there for a moment, Kakashi. I thought you were supposed to be a tactical
genius, but if you need more time to prepare your strategy…” Shikamaru brought
his hand up to his face, and let his index finger frame a cocky smirk.
Admittedly, Shikamaru could not think of a more worthy opponent in Konoha, and
he had often wondered what it would be like to play this genius.
“Your
move Kakashi.”
Languidly, as
Kakashi picked up his hand, a feather slipped down and fell between the two men
and onto the board. Instead of reaching for a game piece, the man reached out
and picked up the item. They both looked up when they heard wings flap before
two small birds came and landed next to both men. One preened itself, picking
at its back as the other poked its nose into the ground.
“Looks like my
move will have to wait.”
And with that,
Kakashi disappeared with a transportation jutsu. Shikamaru stood, and stretched
his back. He had been sitting for awhile, and experienced a loud crack from his
back. He slipped on his sandals and grabbed his vest before he ran out of the
gates. A mission was ahead, and he best not let Kakashi beat him to the
headquarters. He too found this month to be a drag with one dull mission after
another. He would rather be a night guard on the wall than keep up the mundane
missions. But the birds had a bit of orange in them, signifying the mission was
of some importance. He was more than a little curious to find out what it was,
and he rushed off following Kakashi. He would have to play this game later.
Shikamaru smirked, tingling with a little bit of excitement over the future
match up.
