I'm Just a Girl

A/N: i had a little time, so i thought i'd write chapter 2 real quick.

Allys: i'm glad you like it. i've always wanted to do this too, and i was listening to bohemian rhapsody yesterday and just decided what the hell.

burr: i'm glad you're interested. and since people are going to be sooooo OOC, i might just do some backstage stuff where everyone acts like they should.

animehead: bohemian rhapsody is for everyone! hell, even my high school choir sang it for concerts. made us a big hit with the younger and older crowds.

meemei: thank you!

Act I, Scene II: I'm Just a Girl
___________________________________

[The stage lights come up to reveal a stately receiving room, trimmed in fine furniture and delicate antiques. On a small couch sits a young woman, her dress prim and proper, her pink hair framing her delicate face. Her eyes stare rather blankly across the stage at an older man leaning on the mantle of a fireplace. Behind the young woman stands a young man dressed in a green suit, and on his face is a look of simultaneous pain and joy.]

“Sakura, your mother and I have arranged for you to marry Rock Lee before the year is over.”

[Sakura says nothing as an older woman enters with a tray and sets it down on the low table before the couch.]

“Sakura, dear, your father and I know that you are… more interested in the Uchiha heir, but-”

“But that family has not been well off since their eldest murdered Uchiha-san. It’s even said that Sasuke has fallen in with the wrong crowd.”

[Sakura’s hands clench in her lap.]

“Fear not, Haruno-san, I will take good care of your daughter.”

“Sakura, what’s wrong? You look pale.”

“I’m not feeling so well, Mother. Lee, could you please escort me to my room?”

“Of course, Sakura-san.”

[Lee comes around the couch to offer his arm to Sakura. She stands, and they exit stage left. Her parents look on worriedly, and the lights dim. Offstage, the audience hears a whispered conversation.]

“Lee, I need a favor from you.”

“I would do anything for you, Sakura-san.”

“When is Gai-san’s next shipment of goods being sent to the west coast?”

“Father’s next shipment to LA is in a week or so. Why, Sakura-san?”

“Follow me.”

[The lights come back up, and Sakura and Lee enter. It is a girl’s room, presumably Sakura’s, done in pinks, whites, and yellows. A four-poster bed is stage right, and a pink canopy hides whatever is inside, though the audience can see the form of a person.]

“Sakura-san, do not be afraid! There is someone in your bed!”

[Lee moves to throw open the canopy, but Sakura runs to intercept him.]

“I know, Lee. This is what I want to talk to you about. It’s Sasuke. He’s in trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“What I’m about to tell you cannot leave this room. [Lee nods his head, and Sakura takes a deep breath.] We all know that Itachi killed Uchiha-san four years ago, but what a lot of people don’t know is that Sasuke has been trying to find him.”

“Find Itachi?”

“Yes, and to do so, he joined a crime syndicate. I don’t know what he’s done as a part of this syndicate, but last night he… he… [Sakura sniffles.] He killed someone, and now they’re after him. Lee, we’ve got to get him as far away from New York as we can!”

[Lee looks into her teary eyes and grabs her shoulders, giving them a squeeze. He then guides her offstage and returns to stand by the bed.]

“Are you awake, Sasuke-san?”

[The figure sits up and throws back the canopy. Sasuke’s dark scowl lands on Lee.]

“Sakura told you too much.”

“On the contrary, Sakura-san has not told me enough. I will not smuggle a fugitive from the law.”

“The law should be thanking me!”

“What are you saying?”

[Sasuke stands from the bed.]

“I didn’t tell Sakura that it was Orochimaru that I killed last night.”

“Orochi… So you are running from those that would take revenge for that crime boss?”

“Yes. Sakura said you can help, though I’m more than willing do it on my own.”

“That will not be necessary. I told Sakura-san that I would do anything to make her happy, and this would most certainly do so. She can think of it as a wedding gift.”

“You and Sakura are getting married?”

“Her parents no longer consider you an option.”

[Sasuke snorts. The two boys then hear something breaking offstage. Sakura storms in.]

“I can’t believe them! Who do they think they are? I never agreed to marry anyone!”

“But Sakura-san, I will be the best husband any man can be. You deserve someone who can take care of you, provide for you so you can live like a lady should.”

“A lady, or a girl, Lee?”

“What?”

“Sakura…”

“You think of me as a pathetic girl who can’t do anything for herself, don’t you?”

“No, I-”

“Here we go…”

[Music starts as Sakura moves to her closet while she strips from her dress. Lee turns his head, blushing, but Sasuke stares unabashedly. She dresses in jeans and a t-shirt as she sings.]

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes. I’m exposed, and it’s no big surprise. Don’t you think I know exactly where I stand? This world is forcing me to hold your hand. ‘Cause I’m just a girl, little ol’ me. Well, don’t let me out of your sight. Oh, I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite, so don’t let me have any rights. Oh, I’ve had it up to here.

[Sakura turns to face the audience and the boys, and she walks to a dresser near the front of the stage to grab a hair tie and begins to pull back her hair.]

The moment that I step outside, so many reasons for me to run and hide. I can’t do the little things I hold so dear. It’s all those little things that I fear. ‘Cause I’m just a girl I’d rather not be, ‘cause they won’t let me drive late at night. Oh, I’m just a girl, guess I’m some kind of freak, ‘cause they all sit and stare with their eyes.

[She looks at herself in the mirror.]

I’m just a girl. Take a good look at me, just your typical prototype. Oh, I’ve had it up to here.

[Sakura picks up a vase on her dresser and whirls to throw it at the backdrop. It shatters. She then sweeps everything off the dresser top and runs to her closet to throw around her pretty dresses. She whirls and grabs a hold of the bed canopy and tears it down, throwing it in the air. It floats slowly down to the floor.]

Oh, am I making myself clear? I’m just a girl. I’m just a girl in the world. That’s all that you’ll let me be.

[She runs to the bed and begins tearing it apart. The boys rush to restrain her.]

Oh, I’m just a girl living in captivity. Your rule of thumb makes me worry some. I’m just a girl. What’s my destiny? What I’ve succumbed to is making me numb. Oh, I’m just a girl. My apologies, what I’ve become is so burdensome. Oh, I’m just a girl, lucky me. Tweedle-dum, there’s no comparison.

[She starts to fight them off, elbowing her way free. She runs for the window by the bed.]

Oh, I’ve had it up to… Oh, I’ve had it up to… Oh~, I’ve had it up to here.

[Sakura leaves through the window. The boys stare at it for a moment then turn to face each other.]

“Should we go after her, Sasuke-san?”

“No, she needs to cool off before her parents see her. Let her be. Let’s clean up here.”

“Indeed, and then you and I will go to my father’s warehouse to figure out a way to get you out of New York.”

“Where are you sending me?”

“Sakura says Los Angeles would be a good place.”

[Sasuke stands there for a moment then nods. The boys begin to clean Sakura’s room.]
