Downward Spiral
Chapter 01: Split paths
When the messenger informed him of his promotion, Sasuke cheered inwardly, pleased that he can finally make sure Naruto stop gloating over what ‘little hold’ he had over him. Because it's officially over, now that they were both captains of Anbu.
What kind of lovely expression would Naruto show him when he tells him the news? Or even better, as his reward, what sort of things could he do to Naruto? Almost immediately, a flock of naughty thoughts whizzed through his mind and he itched to get back home. Fast.
Sasuke entered Homura’s office, eager and expectant. The elder beckoned him to sit and handed over the captain armband adorned with a crested eagle’s head.
“On behalf of the council, I would like to personally congratulate you on your promotion. You have proved to be a wonderful Anbu member and your accomplishments in the past year had been nothing but impressive. Keep up the good work.”
Sasuke bowed and prepared to leave but to his annoyance, the old man had more to say.
“Uchiha-san, do you have a few minutes to spare? I have a few words for you.”
Sasuke nodded and settled back on the chair impatiently, wondering what else the elder wanted. When he lifted his gaze, he froze at the sudden change in the old man’s demeanor. The elder had lost his friendly smile and his initial warm eyes had turned icy and shrewd. For several seconds, Homura regarded him across the top of the desk with a relentless gaze that seemed to pierce right through him, before he finally spoke.
“From what I have noticed, you have been rather friendly with Uzumaki, haven’t you, Uchiha-san?”
Sasuke stiffened at his words but did not reply. His gaze continued to meet the old man’s eyes squarely.
“I have no qualms about it but most villagers are not as receptive. They are not open to many things – things unconventional like the relationship between Uzumaki and you.”
Homura bent forward over the table and continued. “In this village, gossips spread as swift as wild fire. Of course as an Uchiha, such idle talks will not hurt you. Instead, they will only raise your fame among the villagers. But to someone seeking respect and acknowledgment by becoming Hokage, such gossips will be disastrous. And to Uzumaki, who is already a special case, his situation is made even more perilous, don’t you think?”
Raw rage surged through Sasuke as his hands clenched and shook under the table. Drawing his body tautly, he tried to keep his tone calm as he spoke, “I don’t understand a word you are saying.”
“You’re a smart guy, Uchiha Sasuke. You’ll eventually know what I’m driving at. The council knows what you desire. We will do everything to aid your revenge against Itachi and we can even help you in the selection of your prospective bride, one that matches your status and worthy enough to revive the Uchiha clan.”
Sasuke’s clenched fists shook even further and it took all his will power not to strike the infuriating man in front but Homura refused to stop his foul mouth.
“The task of reviving your clan cannot be delayed any longer and you should choose your bride soon. Producing an heir is ultimately your responsibility, one that comes first before you seek revenge. Bear that in mind. And besides, Naruto isn’t the one you can rely on to rebuild your clan so please reconsider your relationship with him.”
His face that was already contorted with fury distorted further as a pair of sharingans flashed to life, glinting with hatred. Sasuke’s anger took over.
“It’s none of your business! You have no right to tell me what to do,” he shouted, bringing his fist fiercely down in front of Homura’s face onto the table with a resounding bang.
“I’m happy with my life as it is. Stay out of it!” He hissed, and before Homura could say another word, he had stormed out of the room.

Sasuke had been trembling since he left the headquarters.
Leaning against the trunk of a mammoth oak tree, his knees buckled beneath him and he sank to the ground. With his head threw back against the bark of the tree, he drew a deep, shuddering breath in a desperate struggle to control his raging senses. His eyes stared up ahead at the scattered patches of sky peeping through the tree’s branches and as he stared longer, his focus started to blur.
He closed his eyes against the ripples of disturbance through his consciousness. Two years had passed in the blink of an eye. The funny thing was he had never thought of staying this long.
After Orochimaru was killed, all that was in his mind was how to kill Itachi and where to find him. Solitary and without allegiance to any hidden village, finding Itachi’s hideout would be as good as searching a needle in the haystack and so he decided to follow Naruto back to Konoha. His intention was to work as an Anbu for a few weeks, just long enough to gain their trust and when he obtained the information of Itachi’s whereabouts, he would simply leave Konoha once more.
Perhaps this time, he stayed a tad too long. His conscience irked him, but not very much. In truth, he had become stronger in the two years in Konoha. The regular sparring with Naruto and Kakashi helped and heck, even the Anbu missions weren’t too bad.
There were new team-mates, good missions, training and by the time he had all the information he needed for his journey, he was enslaved by the boy he constantly called ‘dobe’. Strange, he must be broken. Recently, he had been feeling too many excess emotions. Happiness, pain ...and sadness. His brother would laugh at his weakness if he ever sees him now.
A branch nearby snapped. Sasuke’s eyes flew open and he looked around warily. It was Neji. Of all people, it just had to be him. This afternoon turned out to be just great. Quickly, he wiped his eyes on the sleeves before turning to face Neji.
“Oi, Uchiha! Have you seen Naruto?”
Sasuke shook his head irritably as he glared at Neji. He was definitely not dumb but he had taken far too long to figure out that Neji’s concern for Naruto extended well beyond a normal friendship's.
That fact pissed him off.
“I have been looking all over Konoha for him. I have knocked his door but nobody answered and he is not at his favourite ramen store. Do you know where else he might go?” Neji blabbered, totally different from his usual stoic self.
‘So?’ Sasuke almost spat out as he crossed his arms and turned away from Neji, replying nonchalantly, “What do you want with him?”
There was a rustling of leaves beside him and just as he was about to turn around, he was slammed against the tree hard and coming face to face with Neji who was red with fury. Sasuke cursed himself at the show of carelessness.
“I had no time to waste with you, tell me where Naruto might be!” The anxiety and something akin to fear in Neji’s voice had finally penetrated Sasuke’s thick skull. Gazing at Neji, he was momentarily stunned. Neji was pale and his face streaked with dust and dirt underneath his unkempt black hair and a uniform reeked of blood.
Sasuke’s eyes narrowed. He remembered Naruto telling him that he would be away for an escort mission with Neji.
Blood. Neji. Mission. Naruto missing. Oh god!
At once, an alarm bell went off in his head and fear jolted his heart. Wrenching himself out of Neji’s grasp, he grabbed him by his shoulders and shouted, “Weren’t you supposed to be having a mission with Naruto?! What happened to him?”
Neji’s shoulders slumped visibly as he brushed Sasuke’s hands away.
“Everything went wrong in our mission. We were escorting a client to Wind Country and en route, we were ambushed by a team of missing-nins. Our squad was separated and Naruto was left protecting the client alone. When we finally found him, he was knelt over the client who was dead. The bodies of the attackers strewed around them, all brutally killed.’
Neji hesitated as his lips pressed into a thin line and eyes grew haunted.
“Naruto’s eyes were red and there was blood all over him. But his eyes... I have never seen his eyes so cold and so hopeless before. He didn’t say a word during the whole way back and he refused to let anyone treat him. He didn’t even stay for the report.”
Neji threw his fist at the trunk of the tree, cursing himself. “I shouldn’t have let him off my sight.”
Sasuke stared as his face took on a pained expression.
“I’ll look for him myself.” With that, he gave a pat on Neji’s shoulder and ran. All the way, his hands were shaking and his blood was pounding in his ears.
'Please, let Naruto be okay.'

“Tadaima.” Sasuke said as he stepped into the house. “Naruto! Where are you? Naruto?”
“Here.” A plaintive voice came from his bedroom.
“How’s your mission?”
“Nothing much, the usual boring stuff.”
“What’s that?” Sasuke swept his fingers over Naruto’s damp hair to reveal a gash on the forehead.
“It’s just a scratch from the mission. Nothing to worry about.” Naruto flashed a large grin as he moved away.
“This type of wound should have normally healed by now.”
Sasuke watched his face intently for signs of lying as Naruto shifted his feet and shrugged.
“My healing rate seemed to have dropped but it should be fine by tomorrow.”
“Dammit! It’s not fine.” His hand shot out and grabbed Naruto’s chin, and suddenly Naruto found his face inches from Sasuke’s. “Dobe, look at me. What happened?”
Naruto cowered away and looked down from his burning gaze.
“Please don’t ask, Sasuke. I’m not saying it.”
Sasuke’s stomach gave a weird clench. No words were exchanged as he brought Naruto close and rested his cheek against the top of the blonde head. Blissful moments of silence settled over them.
“I got promoted to captain today.”
Naruto tugged away from the hug to face him. He smiled his adorable smile and Sasuke felt his insides flutter as if they were filled with bubbles. “Congratulation! What present do you want?”
“I don’t care for your present, baka.”
Naruto glared, “Then you are not getting one. Bastard!”
He smirked, watching the smouldering blue depths. “Not caring for your present doesn’t mean not wanting one.”
Sasuke crept up behind Naruto, and whispered into his ear, “How about you, for my present?”
He tossed his mask behind him, yanked Naruto to him and kissed him hard, one arm wrapped around his waist, pulling Naruto closer till their chests were pressed together while his fingers slid through Naruto’s hair and tugging his head back for better access.
Naruto moaned, first in fury, then in helpless surrender as Sasuke’s tongue delved repeatedly into his mouth. Tongue met tongue, swirled, collided, intertwined and mated as their kisses deepened and his world devoured by a brilliant splash of colours.
The next thing he knew, they had both tumbled onto the bed with Naruto sprawled on top of Sasuke, grinning.
“Payback time, bastard!”
Pining him down with his limbs, Naruto stuck his tongue out at a struggling Sasuke while a free hand unbuckled Sasuke’s belt and was about to reach down to unzip Sasuke’s pants before Sasuke’s arms came free and flipped him over.
Naruto gasped. Taking advantage of his shock, Sasuke swiftly ripped off Naruto’s shirt and captured one nipple between his lips, sucking and nibbling until Naruto writhed underneath him, moaning and crying his name.
Not breaking contact, he stripped what was left on Naruto a hair at a time, in an incredibly slow and delicious torture as he administered teasing kisses all over Naruto’s body and mildly repelling the hands which were trying to undress him. On the other hand, Sasuke had no trouble taking off his clothes which he stripped off in a heartbeat.
In ragged pants, Sasuke licked his way up from Naruto’s leg to his thigh, his tongue swirling in circles as he marked a trail. Then they kissed again and again, melting in a sea of intoxicating heat. He never wanted Naruto this badly.
Naruto’s breath was laboured as he arched against him, panting, “Sasuke, please …now.”
The last bit of his self-control slipped. Without another word, he lubed himself and spread Naruto’s legs apart, settling himself heavily between his thighs. In one long, slow plunge, he imbedded himself between the stretching walls of Naruto’s body and started to move. Stroking Naruto in time with his thrusts, he delved deeper into Naruto at each rhythmic push.
Amidst the sound of harsh breathings, their glistering bodies slid back and forth against each other and hands stroking up their backs as they shared yet another ravenous kiss.
With a final thrust, they cried out as one as they soared over the edge, clinging to each other tight as a rush of sensual waves of intense sensations seized them.
They lay tangled in the rumpled, damp sheets, their sweating bodies cooling in the soft breeze. Naruto was curled against him, his head resting on his shoulder as he sighed contentedly. Sasuke was the first to move.
He propped himself on one elbow and gaze down at him, hooked his finger around Naruto’s necklace.
“Why do you always wear this for?”
“Because they are my most treasured possessions,” Naruto declared as he twirled his finger around the necklace, playing with the pendant and ring hanging from it. Tugging the silver ring embedded with sapphire crystals towards Sasuke, a sly smile broke out on his face.
“Don’t you remember? You gave this to me!”
Sasuke tried to maintain his impassive face as he suppressed a blush creeping up his face and when he failed, he rolled to the opposite side, away from Naruto’s maddeningly cute pouting face. Of course, he remembered.
“Che… It’s just a thank-you gift from the Fire Lord and I didn’t even give it to you. You snatched it away when you found it.”
He knew his answer was far from the truth, what gift? The ring was custom-made with gems chosen to match his lover’s eyes but he was not about to admit that to Naruto.
“What about that pendant?”
“Ah, this one was given by Tsunade. The first Hokage used to wear it and this mean one day, I’ll become Hokage!”
At that, Sasuke’s heart clenched painfully. Naruto couldn’t see Sasuke’s face at this moment but if he could, he would see the pain in Sasuke’s eyes and the smile that was present vanishing to be replaced by a frown.
He rolled back and gently mussed Naruto’s hair. “Will you ever give up on becoming a Hokage?”
“No way! I won’t go back on my words and that’s my Nindo!”
An amused and soft chuckle came from Sasuke. “Really? That’s just too bad cos’ it’s pretty much impossible with your calibre.” Any protest that followed was quickly silenced by Sasuke’s strategically well-placed kiss.
“Now go to sleep.” Naruto obeyed promptly, snuggled close to him and shut his eyes.
Pale fingers fluttered along Naruto’s jaw line and cheeks, stopping at the ear to tuck a stray wisp of hair and then at the forehead, touching the spot where the gash lay hours ago. Sasuke breathed a sigh of relief when he noticed that the wound had vanished.
After Naruto fell into a deep sleep, he lifted his arms away and slid out of the bed. His bare feet took care to land on the floor as lightly as they made their way to the door, pausing only to scoop up his clothes. But as he neared the door, Sasuke hesitated and he looked back.
Shafting moonlight painted the floor, the bed, his Naruto. Sasuke stared down at the glowing figure, looking absolutely delicious with tousled hair gleaming gold, long fluttering lashes and slightly parted cherry lips. Still topless, he crouched beside Naruto and brought his hand up to his cheek. Cold undulated dread coiled in his gut.
“We both have big dreams but we can’t achieve these dreams together. Why must you dream to become a Hokage?” He whispered. “And why …why must I be an Uchiha?”
He chose to leave Naruto in darkness. Yes, he was a despicable coward but he was also an Uchiha. Commitments were always there and he had dawdled around long enough. Games with Naruto had to stop.
“Past time somebody did the worryin’ for you, dobe,” he whispered. “I won’t allow anyone to hurt you. I will protect you even if it means hurting you.”
'Forgive me, Naruto.'
He leaned over the bed and pressed a kiss to the blonde’s lips. Naruto mired in his sleep and stirred beneath his blanket. Sasuke had to go. Tearing himself away from the room, he slipped out of the house. Somehow along the way, his eyes had gotten unusually blurry …and wet.
