Red
sky in the evening
“Remember, if I use either jutsu,
you only have a few minutes before it bursts out of the confines of my body. It
must be quick.”
“Naruto-”
“It will be your duty, for you are
my personal bodyguard and your Jyuuken guarantees instant death. As your
hokage, I can only say this now. Uzumaki Naruto no longer exists the moment the
Kyuubi takes over.”
He
could sense the concealed resentment, the helplessness… the loathing that was
hidden behind Neji’s impassive visage. At this moment, responsibility was more
important than a comrade’s feelings. There was too much at stake.
“Hyuuga Neji, promise that you will
kill me when the time comes, even if it costs you your life.”
Looking at that somber profile, the
other man dropped to one knee, hand pressed to the leaf insignia pinned on his
left shoulder.
“I swear, on the life and honour of
my clan… Hokage-sama.”
Turning away so he would not reveal
any sign that betrayed this determined front, Naruto gestured to the ANBU
captain to leave.
Once he was alone again, he looked
up at the mountainside that kept the likeness of all previous hokages. His rock
face was half finished. He doubted he would ever see its completion.
In three days’ time, he and some of
the most skilled Leaf-nins would leave Konoha to find Akatsuki. Their current
hideout had been ascertained, and the rokudaime hokage had decided to act
before the deadline of their demands. Together with the aid of a few Sand-nins,
this source of evil would be thoroughly destroyed… no matter what it took.
He did not want any more innocent
victims like Iruka-sensei.
And if he had to summon the Death
God, or use his other life-sacrificial jutsu that boosted combat attributes to
inhuman heights for a while, before eventually losing his own soul no matter
which method he used, he definitely did not want history to repeat
itself, whereby a destructive Kyuubi could roam freely.
A strong gust of wind whipped the
black cloak fiercely about its wearer, but he did not feel the cold. He had not
succeeded in deterring Sakura from coming along, but at least Sasuke would be
safe.
The council of elders (which
involved Ero-sennin) had been most displeased with that decision. Naruto had worn
them down by arguing that Konoha still needed strong defences, and that
currently the youngest Uchiha needed the absolute guidance of his father. All
taking part in this S-ranked mission had been sworn to secrecy.
Sakura had been much harder to persuade,
until he used the same logic while appealing to her protective instincts to
keep Sasuke in the dark. He had become so much better at handling people than
when he had been an impulsive twelve-year-old.
Suddenly feeling weary, Naruto
leaned back against the stone balcony and sighed. All this responsibility… his
duties burdened him more than he had anticipated. Taking their toll emotionally
and mentally, and he didn’t know how Sandaime Hokage had handled it so well. Even now,
he could still see his ex-teammate’s response to his ‘cajoling’.
You’ve become so accomplished…
that I can’t help but admire and dislike you at the same time. Damn you for
using my own weaknesses against me, Naruto…Damn you for making me lie to the
one I cherish… And damn me for caring…
He didn’t quite understand the last line. And
he didn’t have time to think any further as he dodged to one side, a bolt of
lightning taking out one huge chunk of worn rock where he had been earlier.
Readying himself to take down his
attacker, the Hokage found himself facing an ANBU member who’d just ripped off
his mask and was looking incredibly handsome… while filled with seething
energy.
“I’m going to thrash you until you
can’t walk, Naruto… then I’ll have calmed down enough without wanting to chop
off your tongue!”
He’d never seen Sasuke this enraged,
or unpredictable. And he wasn’t going to hang around to find out why, not after
such a savage promise. Rapidly vanishing and with the other man in hot pursuit
as they manoeuvred over rooftops, Naruto quickly considered his other options.
Looks like he’ll have to be
forcibly restrained until this entire mission is over. Right, I’ll trap him in
the underground labyrinth of stone in my house, and then have him detained for
his own good.
A blurry figure suddenly loomed before him,
inducing him to slow down.
“Neji? W-”
A lightning-fast sharp punch to the
gut was his answer.
The merciless chakra-concentrated
blow sent him staggering backwards. The bastard… did he have to hit so hard-
There was a sharp prick at the back of his neck… A dull click, followed by
the cooling sensation of metal enclosing his wrists and further strengthened
with the warm aura of a binding jutsu…
Then nothing.
~*~*~*~
Watching, as the mellow glow cast by candlelight framed the lean figure slumped on his couch, an unblinking gaze slid from unconscious head to
toe.
The idiot would work himself into an
early grave at this rate. There were mild shadows under closed eyelids and if
he got any thinner, Sakura was going to have to intervene more than she already
had. That is, if Sasuke didn’t kill him. It would depend on his kitsune’s
answers.
Thankfully, Hyuuga Hiashi had agreed
to take care of his grandson for tonight.
Pale yellow lashes seemed to flicker
like wind-blown flames, as the other man groggily opened his eyes. They took in
the somewhat familiar main house furnishings of the Uchiha living room, until
those half-lidded eyes saw the other person glaring at him. Realising that his
wrists were still handcuffed, Naruto was gauging the distance between the
nearest exit and himself when Sasuke captured his attention again. His words
sounded almost dreamy.
“Get
off the couch without my permission, and I’ll break your arms and legs. That,
I’ll happily promise you.”
There
was such a look of inhuman calm on the ANBU captain’s face that it was
terrifying. The deliberate slowness with which that one cracked his knuckles
was not assuring in the least. He was stuck with an amicable madman. Neji was
going to be severely chastised for this.
“Naruto, let’s have a honest chat.”
~*~*~*~
“Is that it?”
Taking a sip of water from the tumbler, Sasuke was very sure this
stubborn bastard was hiding something vital from him. Comfortably seated in a
cross-legged position on top of his ex-teammate, a well-sharpened kunai
touching the other’s throat ensured there were no more escape attempts.
“Yes. Now stop wasting my time and let me up.”
The glaring match was not over.
“And whatever happens, you. Are. Not. Coming. Along.”
“Then give me a justifiable reason, apart from all the lousy crap you’ve tossed my way for the last half hour.”
Bogged down with frustration, increasing anger and another emotion slowly rising to the fore, Naruto was having a hard time maintaining that front
he’d always kept. Sakura was really going to be challenged to a duel after
this.
“Konoha has other capable shinobi that can aid in its protection. For this mission, at the very least you will need the most adept jounins, if you’re
going to ensure success and as many fellow survivors as possible. You know damn
well I’m one of the best around. Tsunade-sama will be staying behind, isn’t
she? What stunt are you trying to pull? Answer me!”
He didn’t want to. He couldn’t. Not without letting go of that secret.
I can’t let history repeat itself. I can’t lose
someone like that again…
“Sasuke, stop forcing this. There’s
nothing more I can say.”
Listening to those words, hearing
what sounded like… sadness? It couldn’t be. But for Naruto to finally say his
name, and the loss of fake calm on that tanned face… it was. Sasuke had seen
that look before. It was indescribable anguish that he saw in the mirror, every
time he thought of... the time he’d punched a hole through his best friend’s
chest. Remembering only heightened angry impatience and irritation.
“Alright. Excluding all the idiotic
excuses you’ve given, let’s try another avenue. Is it Iruka-sensei? Are you
afraid I’ll end up like him? That’s baseless worrying.”
There was no answer.
About to give slumped shoulders a
good shaking, he saw it. Eyes closing, as if refusing to look at him, and the
slight trickle of blood from a bitten lip… signifying the effort of clamping
down on what wouldn’t be verbalised. Face contorting in a grimace, body stiff
as a log… All signs of being irrevocably shut out.
The Uchiha had never seen him this
defensive in such a long time. Loud, brash arguments were preferable to quiet
despair. After turning away from Orochimaru’s pathway and returning to Konoha,
their friendship had been taken to greater connective levels in more ways than
one. Yet he was constantly aware that there was always one barrier Naruto
wouldn’t relinquish. At first, he’d though it was his own fault, but the likes
of Kakashi-sensei, Sakura and Neji dispelled the theory. Nobody seemed to be
able to get through that walled-off portion. Then he realised…
Was
it terribly lonely, Naruto? I had a family, but you preserved that shield and
remained apart from others. But why? What makes you do it? What is this
motivation, so strong that you want to protect it at all costs?
That did it. He was tired of
second-guessing; of being understanding and behaving like a testy asshole.
There was only one last resort.
“Naruto. I give up. Every time you
do this… you couldn’t trust me in the end, could you? Or maybe I was a fool,
hoping ‘we’ had meant something deep. Never a day in my marriage went past…
without thinking of you. Hearing and presuming about Kankuro nearly killed me;
even though I now know it isn’t true. I only wish-”
Everything was slightly blurry.
“That you had told me in a
straightforward manner earlier. So I’d stop hoping for an impossible
reconciliation… of wanting futility that lived in the past…”
It was hard to tell which man was
feeling the greater emotional effect of having a blade twisted within his chest.
“Of wishing for the only true
happiness that I can’t forget… You asshole!”
Snarled venom was halted by a soft,
monotonous answer. Gentle, like withered leaves slowly spiralling towards the
dusty earth.
“Hate me if it makes you feel
better. Knowing that you’ve stopped caring is comforting, for I won’t change my
mind. But I’ve always trusted you, Sasuke. Just like I’ll trust you to continue
poking fun at the sculpture they’re making of my face, to point out all the
irregularities I’ll never see-”
Widened black pupils looked into
blue eyes that were glassy with unshed tears. A small smile had appeared,
marred slightly by a little blood.
“But at least I’ve laughed at half
of the finished monstrosity. And friends like Gaara will live on after-”
Further revelation was stopped by a
mouth on his, abrupt contact making his bitten lip tingle mildly. Twisting away
from the kiss, Naruto gasped out, “Stop.”
A seething jounin was trying hard
not to give in to the urge to punch sense into this hokage. His kitsune was a moron who
was too noble for his own good, and from what he’d just revealed… Uzumaki
Naruto needed Uchiha Sasuke. And vice versa. Or the chances of an unacceptable
outcome would be much more likely to happen.
“Why?”
Because it’s too good. “Because
you’ll regret this fleeting stupidity.”
Both were not moving. The supine man
could feel warm breath against his ear, along with reassuring firmness of lean
muscle and a fist bunching up fabric around the front of his shirt.
Straddling his prisoner, the ANBU captain hissed, “Shut. Up. Just. Shut up. Naruto…”
One deft flick of his wrist, and
cotton was severed from waist to neck. Nevermind niggling thoughts of jealousy as to whether the Kazekage and Hokage had ever been lovers. Cupping a wan cheek and reclaiming those
pale lips possessively, Sasuke sought a long-neglected bond that was only
theirs to relive, to re-establish, and to recover…
Tongues meeting, hesitation melted
into eagerness, as stimulated desire diffused to overwhelm the rest of their
bodies. Thorough exploration was enjoyed; their kiss by twists and turns
becoming tender like leaves brushing each other in a breeze, then as demanding
as two hawks circling and tumbling through the sky, into heady recklessness and
lucid sweetness.
All this while, both had begun
pressing their hips into each other, bluntly hinting of tension that required
relief. Heat generated by blatantly acknowledged lust made throats dry with
anticipation, as restrained erections in continuous contact gradually rubbed
away all inhibitions.
Burying his lips in the crook of a tanned neck, Sasuke began nibbling. Licking. Staking his territory hard enough to leave behind evidence of
merciless intentions, even as long fingers headed downwards to steal beneath
two layers of cloth. Caressing each line and curve of thin skin until his goal
was reached. Handcuffed fists pressed against his stomach as that blond head
fell back further, blue eyes closed and bare chest heaving just a bit more
visibly to underline rapid but shallow breathing.
Fingers closing around the
semi-aroused penis, he began stroking it from end to base, thumb continuously
circling the tip with varying force.
“Sa… Sasuke… N-no…”
Protest faded into a drawn-out moan,
as that tortuous mouth latched onto one of his nipples and sucked on it. Naruto
was torn between giving in and the distance he had sworn to maintain.
“No?”
Fuck him! No, not like that…I…
“No… Don’t stop…”
This familiar seduction was unfair arousal; a cruel mouth searing
invisible liquid fire everywhere it teasingly touched, infecting him with a
feverish craving that greedily cried out for fulfillment. His knees parted
further, as he pushed into the other’s touch. Then he felt unmistakably damp
torment glide over his belly, past his navel, a pause and then the rasp of
cloth being ripped away from his legs.
Jet-black eyes and a feral whisper had him spellbound.
“Let me hear you. Tell me how much you’ve missed me…”
The light kiss over his jutting erection didn’t help.
“Show me…”
Then the naked man was enveloped in electrifying warmth.
Gulping audibly, it morphed into a gasp as Sasuke demonstrated exactly what he meant to elicit. Gloved fingers becoming entangled within mussed dark
hair, fine yellow lashes fluttered erratically as Naruto twisted beneath
devastating skill and humbling weakness. Concentrated pressure at the groin was
ambrosia that hooked and consumed the rest of a willing body, building up to a
peak that spoke of taking an irreversible plunge…
Glancing upwards, thick-fringed dark eyes noted (with somewhat satisfied amusement) the faint sheen of sweat coating tense limbs he had caressed many
times over. Ignoring the stiff ache of his own arousal, Sasuke could hear shaky
groans becoming louder, and appreciate capitulation with each pleading action
from his kitsune, who moved so enticingly under him. Head tilted to the side,
blond strands golden beneath the candlelight, throat blemished with the marks
of unleashed passion and so vulnerably arched… he wanted to see those parted lips
invoking his name immobilized again. And he knew just how to do that. First
though, he wanted to savour the musky bitterness of sweet surrender…
Back suspended above the couch as he arched one final time, Naruto couldn’t hold back any longer. Shuddering as he climaxed into welcome lethargy,
the world came to a temporary halt as all the senses meant nothing and
everything in that moment. The thought of what might possibly happen next made him
sick… sick to the stomach with desire and fear. If this continued, he would
lose what he’d promised himself. Sasuke wouldn’t be safe.
The click of metal being undone distracted the worried hokage. And the sight of the other man stripping off his uniform was mesmerizing. Staring at
the taut interplay of toned muscle and lean flesh, unblemished paleness
reminding one of numerous times ecstasy had been shared with salt-tinged
coolness… seeing his tongue licking a white spot off those sensually shaped
lips paralysed further thoughts.
Uchiha Sasuke was a damnable bastard. Plying all the charms he had was a temptation that even a god would be hard pressed to resist. A slightly angular,
slim jaw hinted of ruthless obstinacy, neatness of aquiline features elevating
his handsomeness beyond mere admiration, plus those unique eyes that were
seductively tipped and bold… and the current expression on his face was one
that declared no opposition would be tolerated.
Then blue eyes looked down at gloved
hands, and all pleasantness ended.
Before he could move though, a
long-fingered hand caught his unbound wrist and was about to remove black cloth
when Naruto croaked out, “Don’t…”
Seeing the wariness and hearing that
odd tone, the other man stopped to ask why.
Being replied with a look of
frustrated helplessness wasn’t any deterrence, so Sasuke shucked it off. And
was rewarded with the view of normal hands, except for glassy opaqueness to
short and slightly more bulged-out nails, the ivory sheen reminding one more of
animal claws than human nails. Judging from the blunt, filed appearance, Naruto
must have gone to painstaking attempts to keep it so.
Catching sight of a tanned countenance was heart-rending. The way his best friend’s shoulders became hunched, fingers bunching into fists to
hide, increasing tug for freedom within his grip- He couldn’t stand it.
Inserting his own fingers beneath the curve of those curling ones, Sasuke
grasped that hand. Straddling the other man once more, one arm pulled the
person he valued most, closer. Then he asked why.
“One of the villager’s children saw
this and was frightened. Just imagine what the adults would think again…”
It must have worsened further
sometime during the marriage. Despite knowing this was somewhat irrational,
Sasuke couldn’t keep the anger back. What did these ignoramuses know? Did they
ever think about what Naruto had done for them? Countless sacrifices for
learning more dangerous jutsus to preserve their safety and combat powerful
enemies, which had doubtless led to greater merging with the other entity
inside him… The innocent orphan who had been scarred by scornful calls of
‘demon’ had never left. He had improved his disguises but the old wounds were
still there. And he had been persevering alone…
“I’m going to fight
Akatsuki as well. You’re coming back to argue with me for being a stubborn
dickhead, or I’ll never forgive you.”
Tracing a whisker mark with a
forefinger, stopping as he saw blue irises enlarge, lips going slack with
astonishment and facial muscles pinching to add a dimension of bleakness to that
muddled mixture of bemusement and sorrow… Sasuke wanted to weep. There was no
promise in the future, let alone hope. And the thought of never seeing such a
response ever again, was-
“You’ve changed, ne, Sasuke?
Hinata’s been good for you… and Sakura will be too. Things will work out just
fine, although I’m a fool-”
Staring but not seeing the fist now
aimed at his face, what was whispered next plummeted like a boulder into the
silent abyss between them.
“For I shouldn’t have fallen in love
with you…”
Resting his
forehead against the other, the dark-haired shinobi whispered back.
“That makes
two of us. But I won’t settle for anything else, so I’m a prime idiot. What
about you, dobe? Going to be smarter than me for once?”
There was
no reply, except for a slight shift from the other man, their foreheads still
touching… as a mouth was gently slanted over his. And Sasuke reciprocated the
sentiment, that sole gesture saying and cementing everything else that had no
place in words.
Tanned hands kneaded cool flesh, as
they both fell back against the couch once more. All unnecessary space was
closed off, as both individuals sought a solace that was best for expelling
years of cumulative waiting, denial and finally acknowledged sanity…
Jerking away to retrieve the kunai,
one quick flick slit the fleshy pad of a thumb. Before Naruto could protest at
the action, he saw the other chuckle.
“Relax. I’m not going to summon
anything out of your ass.”
Wry humour elicited welcome
laughter, the sound resembling melting fat globules of wax pooling and settling
contentedly under the hazy glow of hushed illumination.
He should have been used to it.
Even then, expected discomfort was somewhat hurtful. Experiencing slick,
probing fingers inside that area made him wriggle beneath his ‘rival’, as
Naruto attempted to improve the situation. It was starting to feel… better. He
wanted to touch the other in the same way that he had been initially aroused.
But first, he bit his thumb.
Warm moisture was massaged around a
not-so-limp penis, even as Sasuke knelt between his legs and imitated his
gesture. Stroke for stroke, repeating it up and down the underside of
stiffening desire, both refused to break the gaze they had maintained ever
since this started. Breathing had lapsed into shallow panting, as narrowed
pupils betrayed more primal earthiness that demanded ultimate closure.
Deliberately
prolonged pressure of slim hips against invasive fingers was enough.
Pushing
both legs further apart and stopping to convey a tender kiss to the navel
surrounded with two seals, sending up a silent prayer to the gods… Sasuke began
to close the final distance between them.
A short,
sharp inhalation was heard as both bodies were firmly pressed against each
other, neither moving as the seconds ticked by. Until calloused fingers pulled
at the small of a pale back, along with a small plea being uttered.
At last.
Guiding
both legs loosely about his waist, Sasuke had to confess.
“Finally…”
Night-black
wisps of hair tickling his throat and chest as his head was tipped further
back, Naruto could feel the careful pressure of teeth over his throat. A cool
hand supported the nape of his neck, the other clutching the curve of one hip
possessively.
And he could let go.
Tight, hot
and wonderfully sensitive… the Uchiha began to move very slowly, deliberately
drawing out the enjoyable sensation as curling fingers dug into his back.
Feeling the faint vibration of a quickening pulse between his teeth, he
relished the elusively fragile trust his kitsune was finally exchanging as that
throat was arched against his mouth. The urgent manner in which Naruto was
responding, a not-so-subtle demand with each aggressive bucking of hips against
his… No more holding back.
It was
pain. It was pleasure. It was death with each fleeting separation, and life
with each brief consummation.
Volatile
wantonness was a cause and effect that resulted in this battle for dominance
and surrender. Taking while giving, every motion was a question that demanded
answers; sweat and blood and tears could not mask unforgiving hardness and
loving softness.
And in the moment that two souls truly mated
and became irreversibly intertwined, two bodies found their welcome release in
a whitewash of sticky bliss.
Wrapped in the mellowness of fading
light, clasping a fulfilled dream in his arms, both looked at each other. There
was sudden fierceness on two faces that were different, yet so similar. Then it was about eyes closing, nose-to-nose, and sensing while cherishing the steady beat of each other’s
heart. Their lazy aftermath emphasized peaceful intimacy that did not lessen
savage obstinacy of an unspoken vow.
By the terms of a deadly rivalry
that had morphed into unshakable strength, they would fight. And win. And live
free... or die.
Together.
FIN.
A/N: This is
the 2nd & last chapter for ‘Interlude of the Red Dawn’. Rather challenging
criteria indeed, and I hoped that attempting to rise to the occasion turned out
well enough for enjoyment. Thank you to those who reviewed.
