“Kit, are you alright?” Kyuubi was poking him into wakefulness.
Naruto
groaned, his throat feeling like he hadn’t used it in ages. His skin
felt hot and tight, like he had horrible sunburn. He scrunched his eyes
as he rubbed them, yawning loudly. A nurse chose that time to enter.
“Naruto-kun! You’re finally awake!” she was clearly surprised.
He tried to
sit up but found that he was too stiff. “How the hell did I get here?
Last thing I remember was that I had one of Sakaguchi-san’s children in
my arms and brought her outside, then I was here,” he put his face in
his hands. “Did I get a lot of them out? Is everyone okay?” his voice
came out hoarse and muffled. The nurse was checking his skin and
vitals.
She smiled
gently. “Hai, everyone is fine, thanks to you. You saved some of my
relatives,” she leaned over and kissed his forehead, like
Tsunade-baachan.
He blushed.
“I-I did?” his cerulean eyes shined as she ruffled his hair in an
affectionate way. He closed his eyes as his lips curved into a gentle
smile, evidently pleased and happy that he had saved precious lives. A
knock at the door startled them.
A gray tuft
of hair came into view, followed by brown, then pink, then black.
“Naruto,” Kakashi greeted; he no longer wore that blasted mask that
covered the lower part of his face. He pulled Iruka into the room, who
immediately jumped over the nurse and glomped his adoptive son.
“Oh Kami, you’re okay!” he sobbed and squeezed Naruto harder.
Naruto
gasped. “Ano-sa… tou-san, you’re hurting me!” he squeaked out,
squirming. He still couldn’t get used to having Iruka as a father, but
he loved it all the same. He felt the grip on him relax so he could
breathe.
“You baka!” he sobbed into Naruto’s shoulder. “Why did you do that, in a fire no less?!” Iruka sounded hysterical.
Naruto
sighed and hugged his father, trying to quiet the sobs. “Tou-san, I did
it because I wanted to,” he looked at the other three. “The tenants
needed my help and I gave it to them without reserve,” he finished in a
matter-of-fact tone.
Naruto… Sasuke’s eyes softened as he let his bangs fall into his face, obscuring them from view. I’ve never seen this side of you before, he leaned against the wall as he folded his arms with a sigh. I rather like this new side of you, he hid his small smile, but I enjoy the loud, smiling, annoying side of you also. He looked out the window, a breeze ruffling the stark white curtains. I’m glad you’re all right, dobe,
he began to get lost in the abyss of his mind. He was just beginning to
enjoy his thoughts when he realized something. A blush crept onto his
pale cheeks. I know I care about him, but what the hell is this other feeling! Jealousy? Love? He groaned inwardly.
Kakashi covertly glanced at the dark boy. He’s hiding something more so than usual, he thought as he wheedled his lover off of the blonde shinobi.
“Iruka, lets go grab some dinner and finish that paperwork for Hokage-sama, ne?” he gently tugged on the chuunin’s vest.
“Aiyaaa!
I completely forgot! Gomen, Naruto-kun. I’ll come back tomorrow, okay?”
he hugged his jounin son once more and left with Sakura, who claimed
she had to complete some work as well for her sensei.
There was
an uncomfortable silence; only the breeze and their breathing were all
they heard. The bed creaked and moaned as Naruto shifted around. A
curtain lifted on a warm plume of air; children were laughing outside
as they played a ninja game.
Naruto could hear the blood rush in his ears as his heart skipped a beat and accelerated. Why does Sasuke have to be to heartbreakingly cute? He whined in his mind, fidgeting. Why’d I have to fall in love with the most sought-after shinobi, knowing I’ll never have a chance in hell with him? He held the tears of frustration at bay. No! I won’t give up on this one! He thought with conviction, steeling himself as he put on a smile and turned slowly to his teammate.
“Ne,
Sasuke-teme,” the name ‘teme’ no longer held the same venom it once
had, “Do you know any details of what happened? I’m kinda lost,” he
scratched the back of his head nervously.
The stoic
boy looked up. “The investigators said that lightning shorted out some
wet circuits throughout the old complex and that caused the blaze,” he
paused for breath, “and since there was a strong wind that night, it
fanned the flames oh-so-nicely,” the last part was dripping with
sarcasm.
“So then how’d I get here?” he stretched gingerly so as to avoid aggravating his sore skin.
Sasuke
pushed himself away from the wall and snagged a chair next to the
shinobi’s bed. “After you brought out the last daughter of
Sakaguchi-san, you ran back inside,” he lifted his eyes to the
blonde’s, their eyes locking briefly, “a beam fell on top of you and
knocked you out, but you were being kept alive by Kyuubi; I ran inside
and searched everywhere until I found you on the third floor hallway. I
used Chidori to bust out of the building, carrying you,” he trailed
off.
Naruto
cocked his head to the side, his blonde hair obscuring one azure orb.
“You… were worried about me?” his cheeks colored slightly as he twisted
some of his bed sheet in his hands, visibly betraying his nervousness.
Sasuke sulked as he blushed a tad.
“Course
I was! You’re my rival!” he shot back indignantly. “Rivals don’t grown
on trees, dobe,” he had meant it as a joke, but it came out in an
implication that meant so much more. If only you knew how worried I was, dobe-koi, he smiled to himself, but managed to hide it behind his wide collar.
Naruto just stared, as if fascinated, at the sheets in his hands. He was worried about me, and saved my life... Hold on here! Teme has a heart?! He shook his head. I can’t believe my ears! His blush deepened.
“Sasuke,” he started, the dark-haired shinobi looked at him, brows knitted in confusion at the lack of insult.
“Hn?” came the characteristic grunt.
“Why’d
you risk your life for mine? You’re needed in the village, unlike me
who is just an annoying burden,” he looked at the ceiling as he fell
back, then turned his back to his rival, anxiety twisting in his gut as
he waited for an answer. He heard the scrape of a chair and footsteps,
thinking Sasuke left him to wallow in his self-pity. He closed his
eyes, heaving a sigh as he pulled his blankets up to the middle of his
side. He felt a cool hand lay gently along his forehead, and then it
migrated to softly run through his hair. His eyes fluttered open to see
a pair of onyx eyes peering into his blue ones.
“Why would
you say that about yourself, idiot?” to Sasuke’s surprise, Naruto
hadn’t pulled back from his hand. “You have people who care about you,
even love you. Iruka loves you, Sakura loves you, I…” Love you,
he kept that to himself as the ocean blue eyes clouded over in thought.
“I care for you because you’ve become my best friend, and have stuck by
me, even after all the shit I’ve said and done to you,” he sighed.
Well, he just divulged part of his secret love for the boy…
The blonde
lifted his hand and encircled Sasuke’s wrist, removing his hand from
his head. “Sasuke, I think I understand, at least a little,” he sat
upright and moved back, pointing to the spot he had just occupied.
“Sit, those hospital chairs are nasty and give you backaches,” he
grinned as the Uchiha moved slowly and took the proffered place. “I
know people care for me, but the villagers—“ the raven-haired shinobi
cut him off.
“No buts,
Uzumaki Naruto!” he growled, stilling any other objections that may
have been coming. “I don’t want to hear anymore of your reasons, and I
don’t give a fuck if you have the Kyuubi no Kitsune inside of you or
not, you’re still Naruto to me,” there was nothing but sincerity in his
voice.
Naruto looked like someone smacked him in the head with a 2x4, complete with hanging jaw and wide eyes. He… doesn’t care if I have Kyuubi? Not at all?
He swallowed the lump in his throat, sorely wishing he could look away
from the deep, dark eyes that were staring into his own. Oh man, those eyes of his! It feels like they’re peering into my heart and soul. He tried to look away but he just couldn’t.
“Naruto,
why are you staring at me like that?” Sasuke shifted, his leg brushing
up against his rival’s. It felt delightfully warm against his cool
skin. I’ve not felt this kind of warmth since my father said I was truly his son and could wear the clan symbol on my back, he smiled as the blonde blushed. I admit it now! I love the little annoying ball of light and happiness! He chose not to hide the curve of his lips as he smiled.

Naruto gawked at the dark-haired boy… no, man, opposite of him. Sugoi! I never knew he could smile so nicely… it’s giving me the shivers! He chuckled, surprising the Uchiha.
“What the hell is so funny, dobe?” the smile faltered slightly.
“You
don’t…” he stifled his giggling behind his hands, “smile that often,
but don’t stop,” he flashed one of his trademark grins, leaning closer.
“It made your eyes appear to be more than just black, hard, shiny
marbles,” that made the stoic Uchiha color prettily and smile shyly.
Naruto felt like pushing his luck; perhaps it was the gambling habit
that Tsunade had that was rubbing off on him, he didn’t recall why he
wanted to move and lean forward toward Sasuke, but he was dead certain
that it felt right. Sasuke, please, he pleaded silently, I need to know…
¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥
Sasuke, the
Uchiha Sasuke, was blushing; to some it was bright enough to light his
own home for a few hours. He felt as if his heart was going to explode,
his blood beginning to pool and color his cheeks a deeper shade of
pink. His mouth felt as dry as cotton, his lips were sandpaper as he
flickered his tongue out and licked them. Please don’t let this be a dream! He prayed to a god he never believed in at that moment, cursing him if it were a dream.
¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥
Naruto licked his lips as he looked into Sasuke’s eyes. “You’re blushing, Sasuke-kun,” he mocked.
“So
are you, dobe,” he whispered, their lips a scant few centimeters apart.
He willed the fox-boy to move, being afraid that if he made the first
move that he’d scare him off.
Naruto
inched closer, closing the gap between their lips. The kiss in itself
was nothing special, just a chaste brush of warmth to warmth. They
parted, flushing and gazing at one another. The blonde saw the
raven-haired look as if he wanted to say something, but he shook his
head. He brought up a bandaged hand and let his fingers ghost across
the fevered skin of his rival’s cheek. The blonde shinobi’s heart
fluttered as he saw Sasuke smile gently. He simply laid his hand along
Sasuke’s jaw line, willing him to come closer.
The door creaked open as Sakura ran in, glomping Sasuke.
“Sasuke-kuuuuuun!”
she crowed, pulling on his arm. “You promised to come to a luncheon
with Hokage-sama when she meets with Kazekage-sama,” she pulled until
he rose from his place on Naruto’s bed.
Damnit, stupid girl… stupid, stupid, fangirls! He growled as he left the room. “Ja ne, baka,” he waved back to the slightly frowning ball of sunshine, his sunshine, he corrected mentally, and left.
Naruto sighed longingly for his teammate. He grumbled, sulking against the headboard of his bed. How unfair! I finally get Sasuke alone and Sakura drags him out for that old hag! He seethed, but then deflated. Guess it can’t be helped, he went to the window and slid it open, sitting on the sill, Tsunade-baachan is the Hokage after all. He yawned, stretching. A nap sounded good right about now…
¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥
Sasuke grumbled the whole way as the pink-haired medic jounin dragged him to Hokage Tower. I can’t believe I forgot about this, he mentally kicked himself as they entered her office.
“Ah
and here they are,” Tsunade motioned for the pair of jounin to sit
behind her. She started pulling out papers and speaking to the
Kazekage, who nodded intermittently.
The Kazekage removed the cloth covering his face. “Pardon me, Hokage-sama, but how can you stand this humidity?” he fanned himself with a paper fan he always carried.
Sasuke’s eyes widened. Gaara’s the Kage now?! He carefully guarded his expression. Wait ‘til Naruto hears about this, he was told to go find a cold drink for their guest.
“Yes,
we need to up our shinobi forces and call up ally reserves for this war
that is imminent,” Kazekage nodded in agreement to Tsunade’s idea; both
were idly eating the fruits of their luncheon. Sasuke reentered with
glasses of ice water for the four of them. And I thought where Gaara-sama came from was hot! Sheesh! Tsunade fanned herself as well. I pity the jounin and ANBU in their dark clothing. She made a mental note to discuss new uniform materials at a later date.
“Arigato
gozaimasu, Uchiha-san. You and Sakura may go,” she motioned them out,
seeing the looks of relief grace their faces. “The rest of the day is
your own time, except for Sakura,” she added as the kunoichi turned
back to her mentor. “They need you down in the wards for the ones
injured in that fire.”
“Hai,
Tsunade-sensei!” she ducked out with the Uchiha. She sighed as she
detoured to the right for the hospital wards. “Ne, Sasuke-kun, why not
go visit Naruto? Today’s his last day here,” she yawned and took a
patient chart into a room with her.
Sasuke
gently rapped on Naruto’s door. “Naru—“ he stopped. He had accidentally
caught his friend in mid-bend with the open side of the hospital gown
toward him. Aiyaaa! He blushed and turned around, heart pounding. Shimatta! I did not just see his buck-naked ass!
His hands shook and became sweaty. He relaxed a little when he heard no
scream or growl; he sighed. A pair of warm arms snaked around his waist
and chest; a chin dropped to his shoulder. The dark-haired shinobi
tensed, his midnight eyes wide as the hue along his cheeks deepened.
“Sasuke,
please,” the blonde youth breathed into his ear, causing shivers to
cascade down his spine. “Stay here with me,” the hand splayed against
his chest traveled northward and turned his chin slightly with a gentle
brush of fingertips.
“Nande?”
Sasuke asked, his hands trembling as he placed one over the hand that
was clutching his shirt. He looked into those bottomless blue eyes
searchingly.
“Because I
no longer want to be alone. I came to realize that I have no more
feelings for Sakura,” he leaned in closer, “and now I know that they
have been for you all this time,” his voice had dropped to a whisper.
He brushed his lips softly against the Sharingan wielder’s, hoping he
wouldn’t be turned away for bearing his soul.
¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥
Sasuke
felt his breath hitch in his chest as he felt those heavenly soft lips
against his own. Hesitantly he responded, his eyes drifting closed,
releasing the lungful of air he held through his nose. He relaxed more
and almost laughed at the tongue poking at his mouth, demanding entry.
He granted entry and let his own slick tongue dance gleefully with
Naruto’s. He lifted his unoccupied hand and gently threaded his fingers
into the soft blonde spikes on the back of Naruto’s head, the hand over
his rival’s tightened as the blonde youth nipped at his lower lip. The
arms around him drew him closer, moving backward. They played tonsil
hockey until Naruto sat in the only chair in the room, pulling Sasuke
into his lap.
“Will you
stay now?” Naruto cupped the pale ninja’s face softly, the pads of his
thumbs absently stroking against the skin. He felt it heat up slightly.
“Hn…” he
swallowed, leaning against him in a warm embrace. The raven-haired
youth nestled his head under the bandaged blonde’s chin as Naruto
softly wove his fingers through the silky midnight hair. He purred; he
had always loved being petted.
After a few moments of blissful silence, the blonde youth sighed. “Sasuke-teme?” he never paused in his petting.
“Mmh?” Sasuke glanced up at him, his dark eyes hooded in lazy contentment.
“Would
you…” he paused uneasily, “hate me if I said I have to leave in the
morning?” he closed his eyes, waiting for the emotional explosion.
¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥
“Would you…” he heard Naruto pause uneasily, “hate me if I said I have to leave in the morning?”
Sasuke
jerked away so violently that he fell to the cold linoleum of the
hospital floor. “N-nande?! What the hell?! You just woke up! What the
fuck’s wrong with you, usuratonkachi?!” he felt as if the happy little
world he had been in a split-second ago had just come crashing down. He… he can’t leave me now!
Naruto
winced. “I’ll be back, ya know!” his tone was sharp, “I’m going because
I want to, Mr.-High-n-Mighty Uchiha Sasuke,” his bright blue eyes
darkened in annoyance, the words spliced with plenty of sarcasm.
“Tsunade-baachan says it’s needed if I’m to become Hokage, which by the
way she announced to the council earlier today that I’m to be her
successor,” he let his teammate chew on that.
Sasuke’s face hardened. “Then I’m going with you.”
“The hell you are! What about your clan, huh? Or have you conveniently forgotten that tiny detail!”
The
dark shinobi’s mouth was agape, but grew into a scowl. “Then I’ll
follow you and f.y.i., I don’t give a shit about my clan right now! I
have my entire life to produce heirs!” his voice rose to a scream to
match the blonde’s.
“Uchiha! Uzumaki!” they both jumped. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, screaming at this time of night!” Jiraiya ground out; he was outside the window.
“Jiraiya-sama…”
“Ero-sannin…”
“Get your stuff, gaki. We’re going now,” then left.
The
two youths stared at each other; Naruto’s mind reeled at the pushed-up
mission; Sasuke stood, trembling in frustration as he stared out the
window at the retreating back of the sannin. A doctor entered, having
heard the commotion.
“Uzumaki-kun,
you’re free to go,” he easily removed the I.V. fluids and went to
unwrap his hands, but Sasuke grabbed the doctor’s wrist.
“I’ll do
it, sir,” he gave him a look that said “Try otherwise and I hurt you."
The man nodded, handed Naruto the signed discharge papers, and exited.
“Naruto,” he started, his pale hand covering the bandaged one of his
best friend.
Naruto held
out his hands and sighed. “Sasuke, face it. I can’t stay.
Tsunade-baachan ordered me to do Hokage training with Ero-sannin,” his
voice grew soft as he felt the shivers run down his spine while the
Uchiha slowly and delicately unwrapped his hands.
“I know…”
the pale shinobi heaved a sigh as he neared his sunshine to unwrap the
coverings around his neck. “I won’t stop you, but please promise me you won’t die under that pervert’s tutelage,” and that you’ll come back to me,
he added to himself. He ventured a gaze up into the azure eyes of his
secret love. “Would you mind if I saw you out of the village…” he let
the question hang in the cooling air, pulling the last bandage off and
gently stretching as he rose from his chair.
The saffron-haired ninja sighed as he pressed his fingertips into his temples. “Kami-sama, bastard, don’t you ever give up?”
Sasuke
snorted. “Not a chance, baka. I fight for what I want, even if it’s
against that very person,” he folded his arms over his chest.
“Kuso…”
Naruto yawned and snagged his pack from the closet, kicking it closed
with his foot. “If you insist on seeing me off, then get a move on,” he
climbed out onto the balcony of his hospital room. I’m sorry, Sasuke, but I must do
this. I may have gotten your acknowledgment, but I haven’t gotten it
from the village, which I want more than anything, ‘cept perhaps to
feel loved, he thought as he chewed on the inside of his cheek. The raven-haired youth joined him a moment later.
“Ne, Naruto?” Sasuke started softly.
“Na?”
“Don’t stay away for too long. I want a match when you get back, dobe,” he smirked at the angry twitch he got from his friend.
“Are you ever going to stop calling me dead-last?” he whined.
A smirk and a ‘hmph’ was the reply.
“You’re
impossible!” he snarled at Sasuke as they reached the gate where the
village walls met the outside world. Naruto set his pack down and
folded his hands behind his head, gazing into the star-speckled sky.
His companion cleared his throat to vie for his attention.
“Naruto,” he began, “I know neither of us are ones for goodbyes—“
The blonde heaved a sigh. “Damn straight we’re not!” that got a chuckle from both of them. “But I know what you mean.”
Sasuke
reached behind his neck and undid the knot that held his necklace
together. “Here,” he took the blonde shinobi’s hand and lightly dropped
the jewelry into it. “It belonged to my parents, so make sure you bring
it back to me, dobe,” he watched a slightly stunned Naruto slip it
around his own neck. “It’s to ensure your return,” a smile seeped out
onto his face.
“I… have no
idea what to say…” he strode over closer and hugged his friend.
“Sasuke,” he paused as he gazed up into the dark eyes that he had come
to love. “Arigato gozaimasu…” he shook his head, then reached into his
pocket, fishing out a small silver bracelet. “Since I have a part of
you with me, it’s only fair that you have something of me with you,
ne?” he grinned as he took a pale hand and deposited the bracelet into
it. Both were blushing profusely as Sasuke managed to slip it on
relatively easily.
Oh to hell with it!
Sasuke leapt at Naruto and threw his arms around the tanned, strong
neck in a tight embrace. “You better come back, damnit!” he said
fiercely.
Blue eyes
softened as the blonde hugged the dark teen tightly. “Don’t worry,” he
wanted to sound levelheaded, but instead his voice shook with
suppressed emotions. “I’ll come back and give you that match,” he ran
his fingers gently through the dark tresses for a moment, just to savor
the contact as he sighed. Believe me, I don’t want to leave as much as you think, but I want to be Hokage like my real father.
He softly traced the outer shell of the teen’s ear as he brought his
hand around and cupped Sasuke’s cheek, tilting his head up. Leaning
closer, “I’m going to miss you, so here’s something to look forward
to,” he whispered against the stoic jounin’s lips, sealing his promise
with a soul-shaking deep kiss, holding him closer. He felt an immediate
response and tentatively brushed his tongue along the soft lips of his
friend, then dipped it inside, relishing the taste that was uniquely
Sasuke.
“Oi, Naruto, break it up! We gotta go!” Jiraiya called from just up the road from where the lip locked pair stood.
Sasuke sighed. “Duty calls, I guess,” he pulled Naruto into one last hug.
“Hn,” was the reply as he was squeezed tight enough to hear his bones crack. “I’ll see you in a year or two.”
“Definitely,”
he handed the pack over to his teammate. “Have a safe trip, dobe,” he
stuck his tongue out at the blonde, suddenly feeling childish.
Naruto
laughed. “Hai!” he waved as he left. “Ja ne, Sasuke-teme!” he grinned
as he ran off to catch up with the Perverted Hermit he had for a
sensei.
