Chapter Two: Confusion
Sasuke lay on his bed pissed off, confused, and frustrated as all hell. He didn't know what to do with himself. Left alone with his thoughts, he became even angrier. He wanted to break something, or rather, someone.
Fuckin' Naruto and his bullshit. Sasuke couldn't believe he'd let it happen. How stupid could one person get? How was he supposed to act around Naruto now? Just the thought of the encounter in the shower was enough to make his face flush.
Why did he agree to take a shower with the moron? If he hadn't had a clue before, today's incident made it glaringly obvious of his physical attraction to the blond. But why? Why HIM of all people? Naruto was stupid, loud, obnoxious...nothing but a nuisance. The last thing Sasuke needed was a
pointless physical attraction to fuck his life up.
It's not like he was gay. He'd never made a habit of checking out other men. In fact, he never made the effort to check out chicks either--much to the disappointment of all his fan girls. His most persistent stalker, Haruno Sakura, still latched on to Sasuke every chance she got. But fortunately for Sasuke (and unfortunately for Sakura) Team Seven had disbanded two years ago. Now with each member of age and busy with their own missions, Sasuke rarely saw the pink-haired girl. But that also meant he saw less of Naruto.
The first year after the disbandment, Sasuke immersed himself with missions. His only thoughts consisted of getting stronger and defeating Itachi. Gaining power through Orochimaru no longer an option, Sasuke was determined to find power on his own. He wouldn't let anyone else's goals and ambitions lead his life. He was an Uchiha afterall. He had a standard to live up to. So he had trained and trained. He took every mission handed his way. It was all just one more step leading him to accomplish his goals. Every mission, every opponent he faced off with, Sasuke could feel the power growing within. It coursed through his body like the blood pounding through his veins. He was so close...so very close to getting what he wanted. He couldn't lose it all now. He couldn't afford to let an attraction to some guy ruin everything he had worked so hard to achieve.
But the truth of the matter was that it wasn't just some guy--Naruto was his best friend. And Sasuke had spent the majority of his time with Team Seven denying he cared for the idiot. But time and time again, no matter how much his brain might claim he didn't care, his heart knew better. Every time Nartuo's life was put in danger on a mission, Sasuke was there, ready to take his place. His actions were unconscious demands his body commanded of him--he never questioned his motives. It was his job, afterall, to look out for his teammates. He never thought twice about why he did the things he did.
But looking back on everything that had happened since the forming of Team Seven, realization had dawned on Sasuke like a drop kick to the head. Everything he had ever done for the blond, once thought to be his body's instinctive reaction to help his team, was out of concern for HIM, Naruto. Someone precious to him...his best friend. His only friend.
However, an attraction to his best friend was unacceptable!
Sasuke closed his eyes and tried to calm his racing thoughts. Worrying over what had happened would do nothing to help the situation. But no matter how hard he tried to push his erratic thoughts to the back of his mind, one thought clearly depressed him--the thought of losing his best friend.
What if Naruto knew of his attraction? How would he react? Would he be grossed out, repulsed by the fact another man liked him? Would it even matter? Sasuke knew Naruto was over his childhood crush on Sakura, but still...
Could it be possible for Naruto to have feelings for another man? Was it possible they could feel the same way?
Not satisfied with his train of thought and feeling restless, Sasuke began to pace his room. He wouldn't have this problem if Naruto hadn't dragged him out of his house on his only day off to spar. He should have just told the blond to fuck off and leave him alone. But no. Some stupid, idiotic part of his brain had missed spending time with him.
So when Naruto came running up to his door wanting to go to the training grounds to spar, Sasuke had relented.
And so they fought. They fought with everything they had. Never slowing down, never giving the other a chance to rest. They had pushed their bodies to the limit, and later, as they had laid on the hard ground panting, they had felt an odd sense of fulfillment. It may not have been quite so obvious to the average on-looker, but those closest to the two men knew of the affect one had on the other. It was strange, and neither Sasuke nor Naruto understood it. But after trying to deny it for years, both men finally just accepted the fact that they shared a strange connection. They were connected to each other, and always would be.
And it was that connection that Sasuke was afraid of losing the most. After all the tragedy that he had suffered through in his short life, he refused to give up the one thing that kept him sane. He needed Naruto. But did Naruto need him?
* * * * *
After an hour of contemplation and having not come up with a solution to his problem, Sasuke gave up. Flicking his light off, he collasped back on his bed, readying his body for sleep. He'd be leaving tomorrow on another mission. Two weeks away from Konoha. Two weeks away from Naruto. Turning to get more comfortable, Sasuke slowed his breathing down. Feeling sleep slowly creeping in on him, Sasuke prayed that he could find the answer he was searching for. Maybe then he could face Naruto.
