The Next
Hokage
His head was
about to explode. He could only hear the voices of people talking to him, but he
was far away. His mind was. They were just a murmur.
Everything had
gone crazy since Tsunade had told him, and then the rest of the village. Sakura
was teasing him the whole time, Shikamaru, Chouji and Kiba wouldn’t stop bugging
him, playing the “last pranks” on him.
But what
worried him weren’t the pranks. It was the fact that he was going to be the
next Hokage. It was a simple letter he got five years ago and Sakura’s
sudden giggles every time they were close. Why? She was – surprisingly – dating
the Kazekage, Gaara, and she didn’t mention Sasuke again. Why? What was that
about?
He was also
mad at himself. How the hell could he lose that letter? It was the only proof he
had to believe Sasuke was coming back. Sasuke’s word. A confession, maybe? Of
what? He hated himself for that loss. The blond boy had been keeping it as a
sacred treasure, a little boy’s favorite toy. Something that could bring
Sasuke’s fragrance and touches back to him. Where was it now? He despised
himself for having been unable to find it.
Something
brought him down to Earth. Again, Sakura’s giggles. When had she arrived? He was
locked in Tsunade’s office.
“Ohayou,
Naruto-kun,” she smiled.
“Hmmm… ohayou…”
Naruto said frowning at her giggles.
“I’ve been
cleaning Sasuke’s room,” she started looking through the window.
Naruto opened
his eyes wide. Sakura was wearing a summer kimono, white with purple flowers.
Her again long hair was collected in a braid, but some stripes were dancing in
the breeze. The blond guy didn’t know what to say. Why, all of a sudden,? Why
had she done that? Cleaning Sasuke’s room?
“Just in
case,” she said smiling, as if she had just read his thought. “One never knows,”
Sakura sighed and slowly faced Naruto. “How are you?”
“Me?” he
doubted. “Nervous…”
“Why?”
“W… what? I’m
gonna be the next Hokage in less than 24 hours!”
“Is that the
reason?”
Naruto
glowered. His heart was beating fast. What did she know? Why was she asking
that? He could see Sakura’s lips drawing a kindhearted beam.
“Everybody
knows you’re about to be the next Hokage,” she said turning around again. “I
mean, out of Konoha. Everybody…” she added, spreading her arms out of the
window. “Maybe he knows it too… Saa, who knows?”
Naruto was
shocked. No, shocked wasn’t the right word. Really, what did she know?
Sakura was very clever, intuitive and all that, but… that much? The girl turned
around, kissed Naruto’s forehead and left.
“Come home
before the ceremony, will you?” she had said. “I’d like to give you a present.”
He forgot
about it as soon as she closed the door behind her. Would Sasuke know he was ten
hours away from becoming the Sixth? Would he remember those words he wrote?
Would he come back… to him?

Sakura went
for a walk. Her fine steps led her to the old training zone were they had been
Team 7. Their beginning. She sat under a tree and closed her big eyes, feeling
the breeze embrace her stunning face.
Something fell
from above and Sakura opened her bluish eyes: it was a cherry-blossom flower.
She looked up to the tree and grinned happily.

Naruto was
leaning against the now closed window. Time was passing slowly and he didn’t
know what to do. He knew everybody was working hard to make that day his best
day ever, the day in which Uzumaki Naruto’s dream will come true. But he didn’t
care. In fact, he was unmotivated, shiftless; he lacked energy, strength,
spirit… He kept on hanging around the room, absent-minded.
Every now and
then his mind decided to go back to the five years that had passed since… that.
What had he done? Train, train, train and train. Lay in bed, trying to remember
that night, trying to rescue that night from his blurry memories, his moves, his
touches, his skin… everything that porcelain doll did to him, taking his
innocence away.
Yeah, Sasuke
had taken that with his hands. With his body. With those captivating ebony eyes.
But…
Did he know?
Did Sasuke know what was happening to Naruto? Did he know he had taken away more
than he thought, that Naruto was just one step away from insanity, that he
cursed himself for the loss of an apparently trivial note?
Did Sasuke
ever think of him?
Did Sasuke
know every little thing Naruto do was because of him, that he became a jounin
just because of him? Everything Naruto did was Sasuke. Everything he
breathed was Sasuke. Everything he dreamt was Sasuke. Everything
was him.
Sasuke…
He shook his
head and blushed. Naruto felt as if he was the masculine version of Sakura. Why
the hell was he like that, acting like a schoolgirl? Wasn’t he supposed to be a
man? Wasn’t he gonna be the next Hokage in a few hours? What would Sasuke think?
“NOOOOOO!!!”
Naruto thought. “Stop thinking about him…”
He left the
room, determined to have a walk to have his mind distracted from the thought of
Sasuke coming back.
“ARGH!!”
The air was
playing smoothly with the trees. Naruto saw Kiba, Neji and Shikamaru talking. He
was far from them and they were murmuring, so he couldn’t hear a word of what
they were saying.
“You’ve seen
him too?” said Kiba shaking his head.
“It was enough
with the note,” added Shikamaru. “Looks like he wants to do things right.”
“I’m glad he’s
done this,” Neji intervened. “He had his conscience dirty, which proves…”
Neji looked at
him and stopped talking. Shikamaru looked back and grinned.
“Oi, Naruto!”
he called. “Five hours to go! We’re still planning the last prank.
“So you can’t
come close,” added Kiba.
“You’re the
victim,” said Neji smiling slightly. “Ja, bye bye.”
He saw them
walking away in a very accomplice-like way. He felt as if they were actors and
he was the dramatic victim of the play. They didn’t seem to be planning any
joke, but Naruto didn’t care. His mind was far away from Konoha, and he wasn’t
planning of rescuing it.
“What would
people think of… it?”
It wasn’t a
weird thing after all. Lee, Chouji, even some jounin… No, it wasn’t odd at all.
Maybe it wasn’t eerie because now he stopped and took the time to think about
it, now that he… felt the same?
“Uhhh… I’m
thinking too much…”
Sakura.
“That’s it!
She told me to go to her place… I’ll go now…”
His mind
wasn’t working while he was heading there. He knew that Sakura would most likely
start sniggering and asking strange stuff like before, that noticing his
bewildered look she’d go on and torture him till he decided to come clean.
That’s why his
mind wasn’t working. He preferred to ignore those facts and just go visit his
best friend, who had been away for a long time.
Sakura opened
the door with a big grin and hugged him whispering “only four hours!” He
didn’t know what she meant. Four hours to be the Sixth or four hors to see him
again? No no no… Sakura didn’t know anything about Sasuke’s stuff… how could
she…? Could she?
She led him to
her old room. She said she missed it, but he had a better one there in Suna with
Gaara. “He can even get some sleep now that I’m there,” she commented smiling.
Sakura made him sit down and opened a drawer. She took something out, carefully
enough not to let Naruto see what it was. The girl told him to close his eyes
and stood in front of him.
“I know I
shouldn’t have done this,” she began with a kind of cheerless tone. “But I just
had too. I found it on the floor, you were gonna lose it… Probably you’ve been
looking for it like crazy and… and I’ve been keeping it all this time…”
“What? Hang
on hang on” he wanted to say, but his voice betrayed him. What was she
trying to say? That she… It couldn’t be…
“Here, take
it,” she said handing him a piece of paper.
Naruto took it
from Sakura’s hands, opening his eyes slowly, as if he had just woke up. He knew
his expression was changing relentlessly. From confussion to bliss, from
irritation to calmness, from exasperation to warmth. He pressed the letter
against his chest after touching it as if wanting to make sure it was real,
after contemplating Sasuke’s writing. He avoided Sakura’s eye contact.
“Naze?” he
asked gloomily.
“I… I’m not
sure…” she answered kneeling in front of him. “I just… before leaving, I went to
your place, but you weren’t there…”
“Before
leaving when?”
“The time
Hinata and I went to that old hospital… You weren’t in your room and the letter
was on the floor. You left the window open…”
Sakura didn’t
deny she had read the letter then. Like he would have believed her. But she
admitted it. She didn’t contradict she had loathed him wordlessly for “having
been keeping it from me… It sure would have hurt, it really did… but…” But there
could have been someone to go to. Someone to talk to. Someone. Just someone
there for him. But how on earth would he have dared? Things had gone like that
and there was no way back. There was no place for the “what if.” He had
been suffering alone and Sakura had been an indiscernible hand.
“Nee, Sakura-chan…”
whispered Naruto childishly.
“Uh?”
“Say he’s
coming back… I need to hear someone saying it… I need to believe it…”
“He’s coming
back,” the girl affirmed full of determination, looking straight into Naruto’s
blue eyes.
What did she
know?

The ceremony
passed unpredictably fast. Everybody was there, all eyes on him. All?
Gaara had a
unique seat close to him and Tsunade. Shikamaru, Kiba, Neji, Sakura, Ino, Hinata…
all of them were first row, smiling. Accomplice smirks. Kakashi-sensei was
leaning on a tree along with Jiraiya. Both of them had a proud air on their
faces.
Naruto
scrutinized the crowd, every single face down there. Sometimes he lost track of
the ceremony, but he knew he had to do it; he had to give his best. It had to be
perfect. That didn’t mean his subconscious was going to stop looking for Sasuke.
No way.
Sometimes he
had the vague impression of a shade watching him. He stared at the multitude:
their faces didn’t change. So no one else apart from him could feel the shadow.
He smiled and the ceremony went on with no mishaps.

The party had
started. Naruto didn’t want any, but Sakura and the girls had been working hard
on it. So he couldn’t refuse. Even though Naruto wanted to change clothes so
bad… He wanted to be comfortable, just in case Shikamaru and the others decided
it was time for another hoax.
Well, it
wasn’t the only reason. He had the feeling that Sasuke wasn’t going to appear in
public so soon. His look searched for Sakura. He noticed Gaara was grabbing the
girl’s hand. Sakura gazed at him and grinned.
“You’re
right,” her look seemed to say, encouraging him.
He headed to
his now Hokage office. He had left some clothes there. Naruto rushed
unconsciously, instinctively. He entered the room leaving the door opened, but
it closed behind him.
A smooth hand
covered his eyes, while other hand made him turn around. Naruto took that first
hand off his eyes, but he couldn’t see anything. He could only feel something in
his stomach, the same sensation he had felt long ago… he didn’t even tried to
open his eyes. Not now that fleshy and luscious lips were tasting his mouth.
“Sasuke…” he
sighed.
