----------The Middle of the Night----------
Sasuke slipped stealthily through the veil of night and all of its shadows. His forehead was bare, the hitai-ate he had worked so hard to acquire a seemingly worthless weight in one of the pockets of his backpack. The gates were in sight and there didn't appear to be any more guards than usual. He stepped from the cover of the bushes and started towards them. He would be free of all of his self locked shackles once he passed through those gates. Why didn’t he feel more optimistic and less confused?
“And just what do you think you're doing?” a quiet, hard voice asked from a shadow to his side.
The curse was absolutely silent in his mind but his suddenly stiff back spoke it in volumes. “Leaving.” he said emotionlessly. :: Don't get baited into telling him anything. He can't stop me this time... I won't be this weak willed again! Never!::
“Like hell you are.” Naruto came out of the shadows to stand in front of Sasuke, arms crossed. He had spent the last few hours in his apartment thinking about a great many things. Especially Sakura's words. Upon thorough examination of himself Naruto had realized what it was that made him go after Sasuke time and time again. It was more than camaraderie. It was more than friendship. It was something that he wasn't even truly sure about yet, but he was determined to make himself sure. “You're going home, and I'll drag you if I have to.”
“Do not make me kick your ass, dobe,” Sasuke snorted, sounding so much like the very first Sasuke Naruto had ever met. Cocky, brazen, chill and deadly quiet unless something needed to be said. The one that Naruto had accidentally kissed in front of his whole senior class at the Ninja Academy. “I'm leaving,” he added firmly, coldly. Black eyes narrowed to slits.
“You couldn't kick Konohamaru's ass at the moment, much less mine,” Naruto scoffed with a roll of his eyes, not at all intimidated. He'd been glared at by Sasuke too often for that to have much effect on him anymore. “I saw how stiffly you were moving this morning. You're going home, and you're going home now.”
There was one moment of stillness before Sasuke lunged, feinting an attack but ending up just getting by Naruto. Injured though he might be he pushed himself. Nothing would stand in his way... he needed more power! He needed it more than he needed anything else in his miserable, pathetic life. He'd hated and he'd despised and he'd lived each day swearing revenge and with all the opportunities he'd been given... he was just, simply put, pathetic and that had to change.
Whipping around Naruto grabbed Sasuke's pack and yanked, effectively pulling the pack off the other boy. Not done he then threw the bag onto a roof three buildings away. “Now what are you going to do?” he asked with a smirk. He knew he was acting childish but he didn't care.
Sasuke was breathing hard even with so little effort expended, but he refused to be stopped. He regained his balance and was about to move forward when he fell to his knee holding his previously abused stomach. ::Should have left sooner… Damn it!!:: He gritted his teeth his back still to Naruto. “Why won't you let me leave?” he ground out through the fatigue and the pain.
“Because Sakura-chan, for some strange reason, still cares what happens to you and keeps asking me to save you. and I told you before,” Naruto bent down and grabbed Sasuke's forearm, pulling him to his feet. “Teammates are supposed to look out for each other. If you want to go to your death, you're going to have to go through me.”
The realization of how desperate he must seem to them hit him suddenly. They could never understand what exactly he had gone through, what he went through ever night and every day. They could never know the fear, the pain and how often he'd relived that day – that one single horrible day - by choice or by force. He felt so close to the breaking point that he could have exploded. Instead he wrenched his arm away from the blond in a surprising show of strength. “Teammates look out for each other...” he repeated. His mind finally coming to one indeed desperate, but very necessary conclusion. He couldn't kill these people. He was weak first and second he did not match them in power. He didn't want to "see what he was capable of". Not if it meant the innocent blood of his ... his friends on his hands. Naruto’s blood on his hands. “Don't worry about me any more then Naruto... I’m no longer your teammate.”
Somehow he'd managed to grab his hitai-ate from the side-pocket of his pack intending to find some way to use it to blind Naruto if that had become an option with the lantern light that glowed warmly despite the chill of the scene the lit along the wall not too far away, but now it served another and more profound purpose. Unless Naruto managed to see deeper beyond his walls than Sasuke was aware of this was his ticket out. The clank of the hitai-ate landing at Naruto’s feet seemed to echo off the wall of the village. It was an almost wounded sound. Oddly enough... or was it really so odd?
Naruto didn't look at the piece of cloth and metal at his feet. His eyes never left Sasuke's face. His ears rang with the echo of the hitai-ate hitting the ground, and behind that... was the sound of his heart breaking into a million pieces. “You said once,” he began, his voice thick with the anger and sadness he was trying to hold back, “That you considered me your closest friend. And I believed you. I was stupid enough to believe you.” He laughed, but there was no humor in the sound. “Well, looks like you were right. I am the... moron of morons.” His voice began to waver, but he didn't care, nor did he care that his mask was breaking along with his heart, revealing the pain he had never shown to anyone. “I dared to think that we were more than teammates. But I guess you were lying. You never saw me as a friend. You're just a cold, sadistic bastard that cares only about himself. And I was stupid enough to believe that there was an actual human being hiding somewhere in you. Guess I was wrong. Thank you, Uchiha Sauske, for taking away one of the precious-few happinesses I have. I hope your death is long and painful.”
There were tears running down his face now but he didn't notice.
Silence. And then... “I told you. You still don't understand me.” He was quiet, seemingly mesmerized by the tears streaming down Naruto's face. So mesmerized that he moved forward as though not of his own will. “There is more to this than what you've heard or seen or known... Naruto...” Fatigue was really getting the better of him. He had to leave. Now. But he couldn't just let it go like this. He slowly lifted one hand to Naruto's cheek his fingertips brushing the tear streaks there. Fatigue was really getting the better of him, clouding his judgment and impairing his reason, he thought vaguely as his mouth brushed Naruto's once. Some small warmth filled his chest then and he brushed those wet and slightly salty lips again with his own trembling mouth. And he waited for the slap or the punch as he made to do it a third time.
This time the kiss was returned, hard and hungry, as Naruto grabbed Sasuke's shoulders to pull him close. Then someone's foot kicked the discarded hitai-ate, the sound of metal hitting pavement again ringing around them. And just as fast as it had started, it ended. Naruto shoved Sasuke away furiously, his eyes burning with anger... and the beginnings of hatred. “Get the hell away from me, you sick lowlife,” he growled.
Black eyes tinted very faintly red stared out of the darker, purer shadows around them and then Sasuke nodded once and was gone. Maybe forever. He didn't take his pack. He just left, but he'd gotten something he would never forget in return for being willingly exiled from the village with just the clothes on his back. A taste of something he wished he could have had all his life. It was better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all, right? Sasuke hardly thought so.
----------A Year Later, Far From Konoha----------
Makoto looked up from his glass as someone new walked into his usual bar. It was a young boy with midnight hair, no older than seventeen though the look in his onyx eyes was much older. Makoto tossed a lock of auburn hair out of his eyes to get a better look at the newcomer. The boy was so pale Makoto almost mistook him for one of his own kind, but on closer inspection the boy was just one shade too dark to be such. He caught the boy's dark eyes and nodded marginally to the empty stool next to him, offering him company. If Makoto was right - and he usually was - this was the boy everyone was talking about.
The bar was dark as bars usually were, but the Sharingan aided him nicely in viewing every door, window, exit and patron crammed into the almost too small building. It was filled, but wasn’t that a good sign? Sasuke decided it would be here that he would take his meal, but that thought stopped when he made eye-contact with someone outstanding as he scanned the crowd. The man was absolutely gorgeous beyond argument. Sasuke shook his head. He had not just thought about another man that way. There was something different about Naruto and he was lured to it, sadistically maybe, but he was NOT going to have ludicrous thoughts about other men, he thought sullenly. Warily he returned the nod and headed towards the empty seat. His name had gotten around to a few places and it was hard to miss the Uchiha symbol he still bore so proudly. Perhaps this man was a Ninja that would challenge him to fight so that Sasuke could learn whatever Jutsus he knew and move on to the next challenge. He still knew he didn't have a big enough arsenal to defeat his brother. But he also knew that he had to practice the Jutsu he had already copied.
Makoto gave Sasuke a nod of greeting before looking for the bartender. “Oi, Kenji! Another Bloody Mary Special for me and a rum and coke for my friend here!” he called and downed the last of the liquid in his glass before turning back to Sasuke. “You the kid looking for a teacher?” he asked point blank, seeing no point in dancing around the subject.
“A water,” the Uchiha corrected the Keep and met the stranger's eyes warily. “I'm not old enough to drink.” he stated and then answered the man's question equally blunt. “I am looking... if you have what I need to be taught....” ::I cannot believe that I have stooped to the level of accepting this kind of help. I'll need to know everything up front... payment, everything.::
“Depends on what you're looking for. What do you want to be taught?” the red-haired man nodded his thanks as he got another glass full of red liquid thick with ice.
“There is someone that I have to kill,” he said it bluntly, simply, as though it was the simplest thing in the world. “and to kill him,” he continued. “I must gain all the strength and power that I can.” ::I'm answering him... but it is foolish to hope that he can point me in the right direction. The power I seek is not so easily had.::
“Why do you want to kill him?” It had been a long time since Makoto had last taken on an "apprentice". ::Too long...:: he thought wryly. Everyone said it was because he was too picky. He thought of it as keeping those who would abuse his people's power out of their circle. But maybe, just maybe, this boy next to him was going to be his next pupil.
Sasuke glanced over from the water that had been set down before him and answered softly, “You've heard of the massacre in Konohagakure... A whole Bloodline Limit Clan slaughtered... The most powerful family in the most powerful village...” Sasuke looked back to his water. “That was him... doing the killing.... my older brother...” Freezing, Sasuke clenched the glass of ice and water. How was it that he was suddenly speaking so freely about his intentions?! So suddenly...
“Ah... So you want to kill him to avenge your clan...” Makoto took a deep swig of his drink, thinking. After a long moment he said softly, “I can help you, but you will need to make some sacrifices... and there is absolutely no going back. It's all or nothing.”
“I have already made sacrifices of the only things that mattered to me. All that matters now is that he die by my hands.” Those words hurt, but Sasuke hid it as well as he could. That last moment with Naruto, before he'd been pushed away and banished, echoed in his memory like the sad chime of lovely silver bells. He'd never ever forget the moment when the blond had returned the first real feelings Sasuke had had in a very long time.
“Hmm...” This kid was desperate. To have already sacrificed everything... Makoto finished his drink. Yes, he would help him. He reminded Makoto of what he had been like when he was young, centuries ago. “Well, it's about time I made my rounds anyway. How about you come along and see for yourself what it is I do before you commit? I'm assuming you know how to make yourself unnoticeable and hide in shadows?”
Sasuke nodded once. There was no reason to explain anything more. If it wasn't already painfully obvious that Sasuke was a ninja he wasn't going to point it out. Together they stood and headed out of the bar. It wasn't like Sasuke to be this... curious, but something about this strange figure had his attention. Something about him exuded power and prowess and those were things that Sasuke needed more than anything. ::Almost anything... There is more that I need, but I will have nothing of my desires until Itachi's head lays at my feet separated from his body...::
