Kakashi was still asleep, Shino was unconscious, and Sakura hadn’t slept at all when Kiba, Ino, and Akamaru came in with Pak-un alongside.
“Babe, you look like hell.” The sound of the dog keeper’s voice woke Kakashi.
“Boss, now that the cavalry has arrived, the wife’s been waiting up on me.” Kakashi waved good-bye and the ninja hounds poofed away.
“It’s good to see you guys.” Sakura stood. She was low on chakra. She’d been up all night tending to Shino, who desperately needed the hospital and two or three more surgeries. She was wearing his jacket, using a trickle of chakra to keep his prize insects going. And she liked that it had his smell which she now found strangely comforting.
Ino had jumped into full medical ninja mode and was evaluating Sakura with a careful eye, “What’s the situation?”
“Kakashi can’t walk on his right foot. I’m fine, just tired. Shino… Shino has lost a pint or two of blood. His kidney was sliced in two, additional major abdominal injuries – spleen, bladder, lower intestines. And of course, lots of muscle damage. He’s pieced together for now, but he really needs the hospital and 2, maybe 3 more surgeries.”
“Sakura, your chakra is very low. Here, have a ration pack. Will have everything ready to move in 10 minutes.” Ino knew trying to convince her to rest was pointless with Shino’s condition being critical. And the way she kept sniffing at his jacket. Something big had happened. The sooner they were home, the better all of this would be.
By the time they reached the hospital, Sakura was completely spent. Shino was rushed to critical care as she and Ino conferred with Shizune. Shizune issued orders, “I want a full scan on Shino Aburame. Blood work too, full panel. Priority. Prep the surgery team. Get Kakashi in a room and give his case to Ino. Sakura get in a bed. 3 days inpatient rest for exhaustion.”
Sakura protested, “Shizune, I just need a meal and a nap. I’ll be fine, really. It’s not – “Shizune gave her a shot that knocked her out. Kiba caught her.
“Room 14” Shizune turned to Ino, “She gets an IV and a catheter. Stubborn medics.”

Shino woke up in a hospital bed, which was certainly understandable. Kakashi was sitting in a chair next to him, his foot propped up and bandaged as he read his book. He looked over, “Ah! Shino! so good of you to return to us.”
Shino looked around the room, his eyes focusing and adjusting to the light. “Hello Kakashi. Where’s Sakura? Did she step out for a moment?” She had promised to be here.
Kakashi shook his head, “No, she’s in a room down the hall under sedation.”
Shino’s eyes widened, “What happened?!?”
“Oh, she just drove herself to absolute exhaustion. Used her hundred healings chakra to save your kidney and wouldn’t leave your side until Shizune had to sedate her and throw her in a hospital bed. She can be stubborn that way… Women.” Kakashi put his head in his hand.
“Seriously?” Shino tried to sit up, but a wave of pain hit him hard.
“Yeah, you might want to hold off on that. Between Sakura’s field surgery and the two Shizune did on you yesterday, I suspect you will be here for some time, my friend. Oh, and just FYI, Sakura has two more days of ‘supervised rest’, meaning Shizune is going to keep her sedated if she tries to leave, which we all know she will, so…”
Shino smiled, “Yes. Sakura does not like to slow down.”

Shino was able to sit up the next day when Kiba came to visit. “Hey, buddy! It’s good to see you in the land of the living.” The two teammates greeted each other warmly.
“How are Kakashi and Sakura doing?” Shino asked, having heard very little.
“Well Kakashi went home on crutches with Anko yesterday. She …ah… has him sort of tied up for a bit.”
Shino shook his head, “Kiba, it’s Anko we are talking about. There is no sort of. She has him tied to the bed for certain.”
Kiba shrugged his shoulders, “Eh? They seem pretty happy, so whatever… Oh and Sakura was asleep when I stopped by. She looks like she’s doing okay though. Probably still sedated. The goddess does not like to be told to rest.”
“Indeed… Say Kiba, could you do me a favor?”
“Sure pal. Whatcha need?” The dog trainer asked.
“’Could you help me into Sakura’s room? I would feel better seeing her myself. However, I can barely move.”
“No problem, dude. Piggy back ride?” And a minute later they were in Sakura’s room. Kiba sat Shino in the chair next to his bed and went to get one for himself. There were 3 bouquets on her windowsill. One from Naruto and Sasuke, one from Tsunade, and a single yellow rose in a vase from Ibiki. The two shinobi looked at each other in surprise. “Ibiki brought her a get-well flower? That’s just weird.”
Sakura spoke. “That is interesting. What did Ibiki bring?”
Kiba jumped at the sound of her voice, “Sakura, you’re awake!”
She still didn’t open her eyes or move other than to speak, “Be quiet Kiba or they’ll sedate me again and ruin my escape. But I am curious what Ibibki sent. I appreciate the ones from Shishou, Naruto and Sasuke, naturally. But the other one is… unusual.”
“I should think so… and it’s just a single yellow rose.” Came Kiba’s confused voice. “Why the hell would he do that?”
Sakura smiled but kept still, “It’s a message Kiba.”
Shino finally spoke “A single yellow rose says, ‘let’s be friends’, I believe.”
Sakura smiled brightly and sat up, “Shino! Oh my goodness! I haven’t been able to get to you since we arrived. Damn Shizune forcing me on bed-rest. Let me see you.” She swept a chakra covered hand over him briefly. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up. It was not by my choice. … and you are doing very well, all things considered.” She sat back down, relieved that her friend was recovering well. She looked at him with caring eyes, “You scared me.”
They heard the medic down the hall, “Yeah, it’s probably about time for another sedative.”
Kiba shot up, “I’ll go stall him.” And he was out the door.
Shino just shrugged, “I had confidence in you, Sakura. You are a goddess after all” a small smile crossed his face.
Sakura gasped, “You are teasing me Shino Aburame. I may just have to send you back to your own room.” She feigned offense.
Shino blushed, “Ummmm Sakura?”
“You can’t walk there on your own, can you?”
“No. and…”
“That chair is probably killing your back about now.” She finished for him. Sakura helped him into her bed and slid in next to him. “It’s a bit crowded this way, but I rather enjoy your company.”
“Me too.” Shino wrapped an arm around her shoulders and they both fell asleep.

Shino and Sakura were still resting like that when Kakashi and Anko came in. Anko had a lovely bunch of white chrysanthemums. “Hey, princess, Shino, how’s it going kids?” She set the flowers on the windowsill and kissed them each on the forehead. Shino turned beet red and Sakura just giggled lightly.
Kakashi waved a crutch and plopped down in the chair. Sakura giggled again, “Kakashi, maybe it’s you who needs to be on bed-rest instead of me?”
“Oh, no thank you, Sakura. I’ve just spent enough time in bed for a bit.”
Anko beamed, “well, you know, making ninja babies does take some effort, dear.”
Sakura laughed, “well, obviously not too much effort. You two work fast, that’s for sure.”
Kakashi’s eyes widened and Anko looked confused. “Excuse me, but that’s a strange thing to say, princess.” She was a bit sensitive about the whole childbearing at 34 thing.
Sakura back pedaled. “I’m sorry. I thought you knew already. It’s just… the chakra signature was so obvious when you came in, I just assumed you knew you’re pregnant.”
Anko was surprised and gasped audibly, “I’m pregnant! Really! There’s going to be a little Kakashi or a little Anko soon?” She squealed with delight and angled up to the bed next to Sakura. “Princess please tell me more.”
Sakura examined Anko’s belly. “Well they are about 3 or 4 weeks along. Probably from before we left on that mission. 2 boys. You are carrying twins.”
Anko leapt with joy. “Kakashi, we’re having twin boys!” Fortunately, Kakashi was in the chair when he fainted.

Since Sakura rested voluntarily next to Shino, the hospital staff left them together. Shizune just threw up her hands. Who could predict Sakura’s moods? Well, it seemed the quiet insect user had a major influence on her. And his healing was going faster just by being near her chakra field. If it works, just go with it. She even managed to keep Sakura resting an entire extra day without her figuring it out until discharge time.
Shizune found Sakura arguing with the discharge nurse. “What do you mean have a nice weekend? It’s only Thursday.”
“Ma’am, it’s Friday. Please sign the paperwork”
“It can’t possibly be Friday. I was supposed to be in 3 days. That means, it’s Thursday.” Sakura’s face was getting red as she was worked into a tizzy.
Shizune stepped in, “It is Friday. Kept you an extra day because you were resting well and your chakra field accelerated Shino’s healing.”
Sakura searched for words. She finally found something. “You mean my staying and laying next to Shino helped him heal faster?”
“Yes.”
“Oh. Well… I suppose… BUT YOU OWE ME SHIZUNE!” Sakura yelled defiantly.
Shizune would not hear it, “DO YOU WANT ME TO SEDATE YOU AGAIN? Don’t push me, Sakura!”
Sakura grumbled under her breath and signed the discharge papers. Shino was already done and ready to leave the hospital. “Shall I walk you home, Sakura?” The tall shinobi offered her his arm.
“Thank you, Shino.” Sakura stuck her tongue out at Shizune. It was childish, but it made her feel better somehow. So did the quiet man standing next to her, though for the life of her, she didn’t know why that was either. Or why her mere presence would accelerate his healing. She would have to ask Tsunade about it. It was certainly curious.
Once they reached her apartment, Shino took Sakura by the hands and looked her in the eye. “Sakura, are you okay?”
She knew exactly what he meant. It was exactly one month ago today. “I think so Shino. I hope so.”
Shino reached up to her hair, his fingers lightly brushing the pink strands and greeting the little pink beetle he’d given her. “If you need back up, I’m here for you. I’d do anything for you, Sakura.”
“Thank you, Shino.” She hugged him closely, her face against his chest and his slightly earthy smell filling her senses. “Thank you.” She went inside and closed the door.
