Chapter 19
The chuunin woke when he felt a series of slight pings on the edge of his consciousness. The past 48 hours had really taken a lot out of him and he was starting to feel the results of the modified echolocation jutsus he’d set now that his chakra was replenished. It was one of the few clan jutsu his father was able to teach him. The Third had shown him how to integrate it with barriers and seal arrays as well as how to use chunks of chakra lodestone and chakra paper to go beyond the limits of his natural range. His random wanderings were finally paying off. He’d hidden little bundles in most of the forest and “dynamically marked” most of the lakes and streams he’d come across using the natural flow of the water to carry the chakra he had emitted. He’d have to thank Inuzuka Kegawa for the unorthodox method and have a discussion about the uses of this new discovery with her mother and Tsume when he returned to the village. He checked the ancient clock hanging from the wall. Three hours had passed since they had lain down so he prepared another small meal for the two of them and doctored more tea for Kakashi. After they had finished eating and Kakashi had fallen back asleep Iruka went outside. Iruka had to use more wood to keep the cabin warm enough for Kakashi and he’d had to gather more snow for the pot he kept over the fire to keep the air from getting too dry. He would most likely add a smaller pot for mint and eucalyptus to further assist the man’s breathing. He replenished the stock of snow in the holding tanks on the screened in back porch, the bathroom tub and in three of the cauldrons he’d salvaged. He then replaced the water in the kitchen sink with fresh melted snow so the fish wouldn’t run out of oxygen. He checked on Kakashi; the other man was still sleeping so he went back outdoors. Iruka was chopping the wood he’d gathered when Manzô’s team approached him. The older man questioned Iruka’s movements over the past days. He then relayed the message it still was not safe to resume his normal activities and to report anything unusual or suspicious. “Rui-san I heard you had a pretty lady with you, but I don’t see anyone.” Iruka turned. Arisa’s voice was coming from inside the house. He’d grown comfortable with the girl over the past few weeks. What she told his summons was correct. She did remind of a combination of Ino and Naruto but with more curiosity and less discipline. He would have loved to have her in his classroom but now she was an enemy and her impetuousness had just placed all of their lives in danger. “Arisa. Get back here. Don’t just go walking into other people’s houses!” Iruka yelled conveniently letting the ax slip from his hands and catch Manzô in the sternum as he ran towards the cabin. His footsteps were deep and clumsy as barreled through the snow and up the stairs.Kakashi felt the enemy outside. He wrapped the blanket around himself and went to the bathroom hoping Iruka would be able to get rid of them. Missions usually went straight to hell the moment you thought you were safe and got comfortable. He forced his body to bend when heard Iruka yelling. He hugged the wall for support as well as stealth as he eased his way down the hall, air freshener in one hand and one of the longer sticks from the fire pit in the other.
Kakashi wasn’t in the main room or kitchen so Iruka deduced he was in the bathroom. Iruka quickly catalogued what a chakra-less and injured jounin fearing for his life would most likely use first. He dropped to the floor and slid across it, kicking the Arisa’s legs from beneath her just in time for the fireball to blow over her head. He head butted Shinsuke in the stomach on the way to Kakashi. He rose slowly and stood in front of Kakashi arms outstretched palms facing forward to show they were empty. “It’s okay.” Kakashi’s face tilted in his direction, but his eyes were vacant and looked straight through him. Iruka wasn’t sure how much of it could be blamed on the medicine. He’d been following the recommended civilian adult guidelines and dosing Kakashi every four to six hours. The jounin’s expression did not change as he calmly ordered, “Move.” “You’re safe,” Iruka didn’t trust using the pseudonym. Kakashi was too close to the edge and Iruka couldn’t risk him turning on him, “Give me the wood and the can.” Kakashi’s eye flashed in his direction, “No, they’ll kill you as soon as I put it down. I’m not going back with them. Why don’t you have a weapon?” “They’re not going to kill me. No one is going to take you back,” Iruka tried to reason. He’d been in the mission room when others had broken. It was best to talk slowly and reason with them but Kakashi was too far gone for that to work. He had to get the man’s attention and make him look beneath the surface of the situation. “Dammit look at me you stubborn ass! Don’t you think if they wanted to kill me and take you back I’d already be dead? There are three of them. My back is turned and I don’t have a weapon. If they wanted me dead I’d be gone. They wouldn’t stand by while we had this ridiculous conversation!” Kakashi’s head snapped forward and he looked at Iruka as if seeing him for the first time. His gaze wandered from Iruka to the ninja behind him. “Don’t look at them. I won’t let anything happen to you. Just trust me okay. I won’t let them hurt you,” Iruka lowered his volume but kept the authoritative tone. “You can’t protect me, no one can.” Kakashi’s voice was soft as he offered the burning wood and the aerosol can. “They’ll make me watch when they kill you.” As soon as Iruka had the items he turned to face the trio of Snow nin. He stepped back pressing Kakashi against the wall and shielding him, “This is my lover, Shishi. He’s been through unspeakable horrors since we were separated and is still traumatized. Arisa, when you broke in you frightened him - apologize.” “Wha-,” the girl began but stopped when Manzô rapped her on the head. “You were careless. If he would have been a second slower you’d be burned beyond recognition. If that were our target you’d be dead. Now apologize for your foolishness,” even though the man’s ire was directed at the girl, Iruka could tell he was also angry at himself for being bested by a civilian. Iruka could feel Kakashi slowly relaxing behind him when the all three of the Snow ninja bowed and apologized. He let the can fall to the floor, and put the wood back into the pit below the tub. He lowered himself in front of Kakashi and helped the man onto his back. He sat on the bed with Kakashi still draped over him. The other three were still watching both of them. The intoxicated jounin hadn’t quite blown their cover but Iruka knew he had to do something before they asked why “Shishi” referred to the ninja as the enemy and was so sure they’d kill “Rui” and kidnap him.
