When he woke the next morning, he was starting to finally feel closer to normal. It wouldn't last, not until he was back home and off the mission. The heightened awareness, the possible need to shut things off was still too close to the surface. But at least he wasn't quite as dead as he'd been the last couple of days.
He knew part of it was the quiet understanding he'd gotten from the other two. There had been no censure, no judgment in their eyes when he'd told his story. They'd both understood and simply accepted him.
During the long night, he'd also come to the conclusion that Raido may or may not have loved him, but the reality was that it was entirely possible he didn't. It did seem very damned convenient that the man fucks him once and suddenly he's willing to admit something that he hadn't for months. It was just as, or more, likely that he wanted someone as much as Iruka did and he'd been handy. Maybe there was a little more to it than that, but he suspected it wasn't necessarily the kind of love Raido was trying to say it was.
Either way, it was over. It should have stayed over before. They shouldn't have slept together again, but that couldn't be changed now.
He realized, too, that his feelings for the two laying next to him were too strong to ignore completely. It was true, he was never likely to have them for his own. They loved each other and Raido was right about that much. They weren't going to open their relationship to him. Couples -- partners didn't do that.
But so be it. If he had to love them from a distance, he would. He'd find a way to deal with it, find a way to handle it. He wasn't going to come between them and he wasn't going to hurt someone else because he couldn't let go of them.
He'd take what he could get. Time on this mission with them. Card games, movies, the occasional dinner together. He could be good friends with them and enjoy that. And he'd go home at night and sleep with his fantasies. He'd make it work, somehow.
Because he wasn't going to put himself or anyone else through what he had this past weekend. He hated the shut down he went through, hated the feelings it brought back, the nightmares. He'd left ANBU for a reason. He'd left the nightmares behind and he refused to go back to it. That was his past. Period.
He sighed quietly and looked to his right. Yamato was sprawled on his stomach, his blanket over him, his face turned toward Iruka. He was so adorable in sleep and Iruka savored the ability to see it. His mouth was hanging open and the younger man realized he really was gone over if he thought the way he looked right then, even with the line of drool coming out of his mouth, was cute.
He was very close. Iruka could reach out and touch the hair he'd thought about so much very easily. It was right there. It looked so soft, like it was made for fingers to thread through. He could imagine that, holding his head as they kissed. His eyes went to the mouth, those lips and wondered what they'd feel like on his. Were they soft? Were his kisses tentative? Rough?
He closed his eyes briefly, then looked back up through the trees. He was going to have major problems if he didn't shift his thinking. He watched the light filter through the leaves above him, the dappled early morning sunshine as it hit the branches and trunks.
When he had himself a little more under control, he looked the other direction. The copy nin was laying on his back. His visible eye was closed, the mask and headband in the same place they always were. He had his hands on top of his chest and Iruka's eyes went to them.
The Man of a Thousand Jutsus. He'd seen for himself just how swiftly he could form hand signs. How did those hands feel when they were running over his lover's body? Were they soft and gentle? Hard and demanding? Did they coax responses from the skin? Or pull them from them, taking them no matter how hard his lover fought?
Iruka sighed. He wouldn't know, it wasn't for him to know. He swallowed the lump in his throat and tried, again, to shift his thinking.
"Such a heavy sigh." The voice that came from the other side was soft. Iruka rolled to face Yamato.
"Morning," Iruka said.
Yamato smiled and the younger man swallowed hard at the sight. God, he was gorgeous. "Morning. Did you sleep?" Yamato asked.
Iruka shrugged a shoulder. "As much as any of us can."
Yamato nodded. "Yeah." His lips twitched. "You're much more pleasant to sleep next to than Naruto."
Iruka raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"Yes. The kid can summon shadow clones and start rasengans in his sleep. I usually have to sleep under a wooden wall." He laughed. "And you're a much better sight to wake up to."
That comment flustered Iruka and he blushed. "Um, thanks."
"He's got a better morning disposition than Sakura does, too." Kakashi said from his other side. "Though the back of his vest isn't much to look at."
Iruka laughed and sat up. "You two are crazy." He rubbed his face hard, trying to wake up a little more and get rid of the blush. "Sakura's grumpy?"
"Very. She's addicted to caffeine. Can't get moving without a cup of tea." Yamato sat up, too. "We poke fun at her, telling her she spends too much time at home at the hospital instead of on missions."
"You can tell her it's even worse. I almost never go on missions and I'm not even addicted." Iruka chuckled. "That's not to say I don't enjoy it when I'm home." He stretched his neck, groaning when it popped. "Bah. Been too long since I've been out."
Kakashi sat up, then, rubbing his own face. Iruka couldn't resist watching and grinned when he caught a glimpse of the straight nose. "Careful, I might see your face," he said and laughed at the eye roll.
Then Kakashi did something that shocked the hell out of the teacher. He pulled his mask down. It lasted for all of about ten seconds, but it was enough to stun Iruka completely. Holy God, the man was incredibly handsome.
"You'll catch a fly that way. Though, I'll be fair and say that I reacted the same way the first time I saw it," Yamato said in his ear as he got up.
Iruka shook his head, trying to clear it. He'd just seen under Kakashi's mask. And anything his imagination had conjured hadn't even come close. Belatedly, he closed his mouth. "Um… why did you just show me your face? Not that I'm complaining, mind you…" Iruka hurried to add.
Kakashi's eye crinkled. "For the reaction."
Iruka scowled. "Ha. ha." He turned away and stood up, folding and rolling his blanket when he did. He couldn't stop the twitch of his lips, though. "Well, at least now I know why you wear it."
"Oh? What's that?" He asked.
"It's an extra attack. A stun. You just pull the mask down and your target stops moving altogether. It's not that you're really all that good, see. You can just stop them in their tracks." Iruka nodded, convinced his logic was sound, fighting his laughter.
Yamato didn't bother and nearly doubled over at it. "He's got you figured out."
Kakashi threw his blanket at his lover. "Right." He shook his head. "It's not that bad. Really."
"Bad?" Iruka asked.
"Yeah, bad. I know I'm not going to win Mr. Konoha, but really," Kakashi said with an eye roll.
Iruka looked at Yamato with raised eyebrows. "He always says stuff like that," Yamato said, shaking his head. "He knows better."
"I'd hope so." Iruka said, pulling his hairbrush out and pulling it through his hair. "That kind of face should be illegal."
"It is. The mask, remember?" Yamato said, laughing.
"Right." Iruka said, his own chuckle escaping.
This was greeted with a groan from the copy nin. "You guys are full of it. Come on, I want to get to Suna today yet."
"Did you get any idea how many were there?" Gaara asked.
"Not really." Iruka shook his head. "We couldn't stay long enough to count, but it looks like the entire attack force is holed up there. The thing that I don't understand is how the Tsuchikage doesn't miss that many of his nin."
"Oh, he does," Gaara replied, "He's just not willing to admit to it." He sighed. "He was leaving a lot out during our last meeting."
Iruka frowned and glanced at Kakashi. The copy nin considered Gaara carefully. "We still need to take the missing nin out and possibly try for the commander running the coup. If the current Tsuchikage isn't willing to admit this is going on, there's only so much we can do. But we have to do something because while the last thing we want to do is get in the middle of their damned political struggles, the ripples from it would affect the rest of the shinobi nations in long and terrible ways."
"How do we get in, though?" Kankuro asked.
"Patience." Kakashi said, sighing. "We're simply going to have to watch for the base to empty, and go in when they're on the attack."
Iruka and Yamato glanced at each other. That, basically, meant them. With Sai out of the picture, Sakura needed for medical duties and Naruto's total lack of stealth, it would be up to them. The blond was needed to help in the villages, anyway.
"What do you need from us?" Gaara asked.
"Supplies and to possibly keep the nins who are attacking the villages busy as long as possible. Don't let them strike and retreat." Kakashi said.
Gaara nodded. "We can do that. Not for too long, but with the shinobi from the Leaf who are already in the villages in Fire Country, it's possible. We'll get messages to them. When do you want to go?"
Kakashi glanced at the other two. "Iruka, Yamato and I will leave in the morning. We need a decent night's sleep first."
"I've only got the one room left." Gaara frowned.
"That's fine, we can make it work." Kakashi said and he and Yamato exchanged looks.
There was only one bed. That was the only thing Iruka could think. There's only one bed.
He looked around the rest of the room. There was space to roll out a mat next to it. He just hoped to hell that they didn't decide to try to have sex while he was sleeping on the floor. He didn't think they'd do something like that, but he was well aware of what it was like to have someone you lust after right in bed next to you.
He dropped his pack next to the table and turned to the other two. "Well, I need to get cleaned up. Um, you guys mind if I take the first shower? The sand here kills me. I think I'll have it in my hair for a month."
The other two chuckled and shook their heads. "Go ahead. Take your time. They're sending some food up, so we don't have to go out to eat." Kakashi waved toward the bathroom.
"Thanks. I…shouldn't take too long." He escaped into the bathroom.
When he got in there, he leaned back against the closed door and resisted the urge to bang his head against it. His mind had conjured all sorts of things when he'd seen that bed. It was huge, easily able to accommodate all of them. For more than just sleeping.
He stripped quickly and turned on the water. After debating with himself over the temperature, he decided cleanliness should win out since cold showers seemed to be a myth, anyway.
" 'We can make it work'?" Yamato raised an eyebrow at his lover when Iruka had disappeared into the bathroom.
"Did you want to give them an excuse to put him in another room?" Kakashi asked.
Yamato shook his head. "No, but how, exactly, are we going to convince him to sleep with us?" He paused and frowned. "Should we? He's been through hell the last few days."
Kakashi turned to the window. There was a sandstorm brewing and he watched the whirlwinds start to blow. "I know. We were there for some of it." He sighed. "I figure if nothing else, we can convince him that the three of us can handle actually, you know, sleeping for the sake of the mission. Needing rest, that sort of thing."
Yamato dug fresh clothes out of his pack. "Yeah, right. Um the thing is, can we keep our hands off of him?"
Kakashi chuckled. "That's the question, isn't it?" The smile faded. "You know, we're not even sure how he feels about us, really."
Yamato shrugged. "I've seen him look at you. I'm pretty sure I know how he feels about you."
Kakashi considered his lover. "And I'm fairly certain he's got feelings for you." He paused to think it over. "I have a feeling we were at least two of the things he was confused about. Part, at least, of what he fought with Raido over."
"I'd hate to be the cause of that for him." He sighed. "Well, let's just take it a step at a time and see what happens, hm? Showers first, food next, then we can worry about sleeping arrangements." Yamato said.
"Yeah. Let it happen if it will, right?" Kakashi asked and the younger man nodded.
Iruka stared at the tiles, willing himself to calm down. He'd stepped into the shower, and despite his best intentions, his mind was still firmly on the bed in the other room. Then it went to the touch with Yamato at the party, the one in the mission office with him and the one with Kakashi the night before when he'd inspected the place his tattoo had been. Before he knew it, he was hard as a rock. Again. He sighed.
The heightened awareness that he had to deal with on missions didn't distinguish between danger and sexual tension. He was simply more aware. Of them, things around him, everything. So even slightly brushing against them made things worse.
He realized that if he didn't do something about it, he was going to be jumpy and in bad shape. At least for the night, maybe longer and they were right about one thing -- he'd need rest before the next day. They could be on watch for days before the base emptied. Closing his eyes, he wrapped his hand around his cock and started stroking it.
"Okay, I know we told him to take his time, but I'm starting to itch. I don't like the sand any more than he does," Yamato grumbled, then frowned. "I forget he doesn't go on missions much. I hope he's okay."
"Me, too." Kakashi hesitated, then walked over to the bathroom, intending to knock when he heard some very unmistakable sounds. His eyes widened and he looked over at Yamato, motioning for him to come to the door.
"Oh god…" Iruka bit his lip to hold the sound in, but he couldn't manage it completely. He pictured his hand being replaced by the ones he'd been looking at that morning. Kakashi's hands stroking him, instead of his own. He imagined his mouth on Yamato, sucking on him, like the fantasy he'd had when he'd been at home.
"Yamato… fuck, Kakashi…" he kept the moans low as he worked his cock over, knowing the water would mask the sound. He moved his hand a little faster. So close…oh God, so close. The Yamato in his fantasy came, filling his mouth, that voice he couldn't forget, calling his name. Iruka!
"Yes. Oh God, yes. I'm coming Yamato, now! Kakashi…" He grit his teeth to keep from actually shouting as he let go and his orgasm hit him hard.
That could not be misunderstood. Kakashi and Yamato stared at each other when they heard the last few words. They slowly stepped away from the door and adjusted themselves as they took seats. "Can't mistake that," Yamato said.
"Nope." Kakashi said. "Definitely not."
He slumped against the tile, breathing hard, heart pounding. He closed his eyes and gave himself a moment to calm down. He hurried to wash himself off and shut the water off so there was something left for the other two.
He cursed when he realized he'd left his clean clothes out in the other room. He sighed, wrapped the towel around himself and opened the door. He may lust after them, but they were adult men, for God's sake. He could handle getting his clothes.
"Sorry, forgot my clothes. Almost done," he said, blushing. He snatched his pack off of the floor and hurried back into the bathroom. Very mature, he scolded himself. He dressed quickly, resisted the urge once more to bang his head against the wall and went back out. "I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to take that long."
"That's quite alright," Kakashi said smoothly. "Yamato?"
"Yeah. I… won't be long." He said and was grateful that Iruka wasn't looking at him. He was still very obviously aroused from overhearing the younger man masturbate.
"God, that feels better." Iruka said, pulling his hairbrush out and starting to pull it through his hair. "I don't know how they can stand it here."
Kakashi's mind was firmly on the view of a wet Iruka without a shirt and the sounds he'd heard in the shower. It took a supreme effort for him to shift his thinking. "I'm with you. It's not my favorite place, either." He frowned at the storm. "That storm is looking ugly. If it doesn't clear tonight, we'll be stuck for a while."
"Well, I suppose being stuck is better than getting caught in it." The younger man said, as he joined Kakashi at the window. "It does look pretty nasty. Is there anything we can do to help them while we're here?"
Kakashi shrugged. "I don't know. They seem to have most of it under control, except for the medical services and Sakura's already helping out with that. I'm sure they're used to that sort of thing. We may just have to hunt up some cards and sit it out."
"Ugh. Not that I don't want to play cards or anything, but I'd just as soon get moving." Iruka sighed and turned back to the room.
"I know. We're tuned for the mission, not sitting around playing cards." He heard the water shut off and he walked over to the table and started pulling his things off. Headband, gloves, and vest dropped into a pile. He felt Iruka's eyes on him and tried not to squirm. He pulled his mask down, tugged his shirt over his head and managed to keep a straight face when he heard the sharp intake of breath.
"Shower's yours. Sorry, I didn't leave a lot of water," Yamato said, as he came out, still in his towel. "I'm guessing they don't usually expect three people to share it."
"Probably not," Kakashi said and glanced at Iruka. He caught the blush around his scar before he turned away quickly to look back out the window. "I'll be out shortly," he said taking his own moment to escape. Seeing both of them wet and nearly naked was making things very, very difficult on him.
Iruka was grateful for the knock on the door. Yamato was on the other side of the room, dressing and it took every ounce of willpower he had to keep from ogling the man. He'd already glimpsed enough to fill in his fantasies for a very, very long time.
When he opened it, a Sand-nin he didn't recognize was on the other side. "Kazekage-sama requested we bring these up for you." He handed a big bag to Iruka that looked like takeout food and a tray with three large cups. "If there's anything you need, please feel free to ask Matsuri-san."
"Thank… you," Iruka said as the other man bowed and took off at top speed down the hall. He stared at him a moment, a little at a loss, but shook his head and turned back into the room. Sand-nin were weird.
He brought the bag into the room and was actually grateful to see that Yamato was dressed and Kakashi was out of the shower. He was only in a pair of pants, so it took a lot of work to keep from staring. He swallowed the drool and held up the bag. "Dinner."
"Oh good, I'm starving." Yamato said. He took the tray of cups and Iruka opened the bag up. Inside were bento boxes. He handed one to each of the others and sat on the edge of the bed with his. Yamato handed him a cup, which turned out to be tea and he drank some of it down.
They all ate in silence for a while, hunger for food breaking the tension in the room. "That storm looks ugly." Yamato said, around his rice.
"Yeah, I have a nasty suspicion that we're going to be delayed." Kakashi said, frowning into his box.
"I could see to fight in it, but I can't travel in that stuff. Too many things could go wrong," Iruka said, looking out the window again.
"You can fight in it?" Yamato asked.
Iruka nodded. "I can, if I have to, depend entirely on my hearing. Even ANBU make some noise when they move. I can separate the sounds of the wind and sand from people, so I could, conceivably, fight in it. Obviously, though, it's not my choice."
Yamato raised an eyebrow. "ANBU make noise?"
Iruka grinned. "You can't suppress your heartbeat or breathing."
Yamato's eyes widened. "You're scary."
Iruka laughed. "It takes a lot of concentration to do it. I couldn't maintain it for long."
They finished their food then and the tension started to creep back up. Iruka glanced at the other two and pulled his blanket out. "Well, um, I think I'll stretch out, just in case that does clear. I'm still not that used to being out."
It was total bullshit, but he could feel the tension in the room. They undoubtedly wanted to go to bed and he figured if he just took the floor, they wouldn't have to feel bad about sleeping together. He didn't see the other two glance at each other. "Iruka, it's a little early, even for that. Why don't we see if we can dig up some cards or something?" Kakashi asked. "I'll be back in just a few." And, without giving him a chance to answer, the copy nin grabbed his vest and sandals and left.
