Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: This story just
won’t stop writing itself right now.
That’s a good thing, as far as I’m concerned. Let me know what you think. I’m not going to tell you what’s coming up
next, but it’ll be surprising, and hopefully everyone will like it.
Review Responses:
SEXY SESSHY: I hope this is a quick enough update. They aren’t always this quick, but right now
this story is just flowing through my veins!
Get ready for more Sasuke and Gaara.
They are going to be kind of heavy in the next couple of chapters.
Nejislady: I’m glad you liked the way I altered the
exam. I was a little nervous about
playing with them, but I just had to get them in and still fit with my
story. I think you read my mind on my
plans for Sasuke and Gaara. Sasuke makes
the big move and breaks things off with Deidara in this chapter. It’s not nearly as painful for him as his
earlier breakup with Shikamaru, seeing as this one is his choice.
Ero Sennin: Hehe… I’m glad you still like my stories. If I ever become a one trick pony, you’ll
tell me right? And Gaara is adorably naïve
about most of the ways of the world in my story. He was the evil murdering kind of Gaara you
see when he’s introduced in the anime, but I just didn’t go into that part of
him. Someway, somehow, Naruto wormed his
way in and won Gaara over.
Chapter Eighteen –
Breakups and Celebrations
Sasuke trudged into his apartment. He heard something coming from the spare
bedroom and grew suspicious. Itachi
wasn’t back yet; he knew that. He felt
Deidara’s chakra in there. Wondering
what his boyfriend would be doing in the room that unofficially become Genma
and Itachi’s, since the freeloaders still hadn’t found a place of their own,
Sasuke walked down the hall. He stopped
in front of the door, opting to knock instead of just walk in. Where Deidara was involved you never knew if
you were truly safe or not. “Dei, is it
safe to come in?”
Deidara laughed. “Yeah, the door is
rigged to Itachi’s chakra signature.”
Sasuke did not want to know what that meant, but trusted Deidara enough
to walk through the door. Sasuke sighed
as he saw the elaborate set up in Itachi’s room. Deidara smiled as he saw Sasuke. His heart always pounded just a little harder
when Sasuke was in the room. He pulled
the pale boy to his body and kissed his hair.
“I missed you, Sas. How’d you
do?”
Sasuke shrugged. “I
left before they announced the promotions.”
Deidara chuckled as he let his hands roam Sasuke’s
body. He didn’t notice the way Sasuke
didn’t respond like usual. He pulled Sasuke
in for a kiss, finally noticing the hesitation.
“What’s wrong, Sas? You want to
talk about it?”
Sasuke took a deep breath and nodded. “Let’s go to my room though, okay?”
Deidara nodded. He
was nervous now. Sasuke had left the
tests early, and now Sasuke wasn’t even enjoying his touches. When the door shut behind him in Sasuke’s
room, he sighed. He wrapped his arms
around Sasuke. “Did I do something
wrong?”
Sasuke shrugged, but his face was the face of someone who
had been hurt. “I thought you might show
up at the test. You knew it was
important to me and that I had less than minimal support from people who
weren’t actually taking the test with me.”
Deidara nodded. “I
know, but I hate the exam. I told you
that before.”
Sasuke couldn’t keep the tears from his eyes. “I needed you there.”
Deidara frowned and pulled Sasuke into his lap. “You never said that.”
Sasuke sniffled. “I
shouldn’t have to. You should just have
known.”
Deidara growled. “How
can I know anything when you keep me shut out from everything?” He paused and took a deep breath. “Do you love me, Sasuke?”
Sasuke closed his eyes and thought hard. He was hurting Deidara. He’d known he was only fooling himself
thinking that Deidara would welcome the chance to go back to his fuck-buddy
lifestyle. He didn’t want to hurt
Deidara. He really liked the guy, but
after having sex a few times, he was positive that he didn’t love him. Sasuke shook his head.
Deidara’s eyes narrowed, but he managed to keep his voice
calm. “I love you. I’ve never felt this way about someone,
yeah. I’ve never put my heart on the
line before. The night you made me
promise to wait for you to be ready, I had planned on just getting into your
head and then fucking you and leaving you.
Somehow you managed to throw that out the window for me. I fell for you.” The calm left Deidara’s voice. “Why?”
Sasuke sniffled at the choked voice. He didn’t want to be the cause of this pain,
but he knew inevitably it would be worse if he put this off. “I don’t get excited when you’re around. I have no problem getting sexually
excited. You’re a very attractive
man. It’s just that you don’t stimulate
me intellectually.”
Deidara grabbed the dog tags that were still on Sasuke’s
night stand and stood up. “Fuck you
then, Sasuke. I hope you find someone
who is just as much of an asshole as you.
If you weren’t interested in me you could have fucking told me before I
put my fucking heart on the line.”
Deidara ran from the room and the house before he could completely lose
it. He didn’t want anyone to see him.
Sasuke sighed and wandered into the kitchen. He found a pail of ice cream that hadn’t been
opened yet and grabbed it and a spoon and plopped down in front of his TV. He sighed when the front door opened and
Naruto and Shino came in followed by Gaara.
Sasuke froze with the spoon half way to his mouth. His pulse was racing and he blushed as he saw
Gaara turn away. “Nar, I need to talk to
you,” Sasuke said as he put the ice cream on the coffee table and grabbed the
blonde, pulling him to the balcony.
“What the hell? How could you
bring him here?”
Naruto sighed. “Sas,
he’s my friend. I’m borrowing him some
stuff for the festival tonight.” Naruto
took pity on Sasuke though. “You and Dei
broke up, huh?”
Sasuke nodded. “I
think it was coming a while ago. I just
couldn’t bear the thought of being alone while Shikamaru moved on. I mean, he broke up with me, but still, I
wanted to prove that I could move on as well as he could.”
Naruto sighed. “Sas,
I know how you feel about Gaara, but I would say you two need to take it really
slow. Be friends first, and see if
anything progresses from there.”
Sasuke nodded. “I’m
going to listen to you this time.”
Naruto snorted.
“That’s a first. Are you coming to
the celebration tonight?”
Sasuke shrugged. “I
don’t know if I’m up for it. Did I make
chuunin?”
Naruto nodded.
“Everyone did but Neji and me.
Apparently the way we pushed ourselves didn’t show any restraint or
something. I don’t know. I wasn’t really listening. You know me.”
Sasuke smiled before putting Naruto into a headlock. “Yeah, I do.
You guys will make it next time.
I have faith.”
Naruto laughed. “That’s
what everyone said.” He shrugged. “Let’s go back in and be hospitable,
huh? Maybe Gaara’d like some of that ice
cream you’re hoarding.”
Sasuke smiled.
“Yeah.” He walked back inside and
smiled at Gaara. He picked up the pail
of ice cream. “Want some?”
Gaara eyed the ice cream suspiciously. “What is it?”
Sasuke laughed, and Gaara could have sworn his heart had
actually left his chest. “Vanilla ice
cream.” He pulled a spoonful out and
walked over to where Gaara was sitting.
“Have a taste. I swear I don’t
have cooties.”
Gaara cocked a brow, not knowing what these ‘cooties’ were, but he trusted
Sasuke for some reason. He leaned over
and took the offered bite of ice cream.
He swallowed quickly. His mouth
was freezing and now he had a head ache.
“Are you trying to kill me?”
Sasuke held back his laughter, but his eyes sparkled in a
way that warmed Gaara’s soul. “No, I
swear. You’re supposed to eat it more
slowly.”
Gaara sighed. “Tell
me that next time. Let me have another
bite.”
Naruto watched the scene unfolding between his two friends
and wrapped his hand over Shino’s. “You
two have fun. We’re going to get cleaned
up for the party.”
Shino smirked and trotted along behind as Naruto drug him
toward his bedroom. Sasuke turned back
to Gaara and laughed. “I give exactly 10
seconds before they’re going at it. 3 –
2 – 1.” Gaara blushed as almost exactly
on cue they heard Naruto moaning out Shino’s name.
Gaara sighed. “How
does one go about getting a boyfriend?”
Sasuke smiled. “Well,
with Shikamaru, I just asked him out. He
said yes. I don’t know. I liked him so we kept hanging out.”
Gaara seemed interested.
“You dated Hyuuga Shikamaru?”
Sasuke nodded. “We
were so unalike, but so perfect for each other.
It was my own stupidity that broke up that relationship. I’ll bore you with the story some other
time.” Sasuke held up another spoonful
of ice cream to Gaara. “This time, just
take it slow. Start with a small nibble
and just let it melt in your mouth before you swallow, okay?”
Gaara nodded and did as he was told. The taste was incredible. He moaned softly. The sound would have gone straight to
Sasuke’s groin if he hadn’t had incredible self control. “That’s delicious.” He looked into Sasuke’s eyes and was confused
by the tenderness and something else he saw in them. Blushing softly he turned away. “Are you going to the festival tonight? I think that Kankuro and Temari are going
with people from around here. I don’t
want to be what Kankuro called a ‘third wheel’ to anyone tonight.”
Sasuke smiled. Gaara
must have led an incredibly sheltered life to be this naïve. It was something Sasuke was okay with. “I think I’m going, though I’ll be alone, if
you want to join me.”
Gaara nodded emphatically. “I would like
that a lot.” He blushed as he took
another bite of the ice cream. “So, you
dated the shadow user?” Sasuke
nodded. Gaara laughed a little. “My sister thought he was the Hyuuga’s
brother, not husband, and tried to pick him up after you left.”
Sasuke giggled. “That
must have been entertaining.” Sasuke
sighed suddenly. He realized he had just
dumped Deidara and he shouldn’t be enjoying himself this much. He supposed it was a testament to just how
little he truly enjoyed their relationship.
“Neji doesn’t take lightly to people making moves on Shikamaru.”
Gaara nodded. “There
were some words exchanged, but I think Shikamaru managed to calm them both
down. He seems to diffuse situations
rather well.”
Sasuke nodded. He
made the mental note in his ‘why I like Gaara column’ and added ‘intelligence’
to the list. In their conversation so
far, Gaara had used words Deidara hadn’t even known. Sasuke sighed again. “This day has been such a pain in the ass so
far. You want to just skip the
celebration and stay here with me?”
Gaara blushed as Naruto and Shino yelled out as they reached
completion. Sasuke shook his head. “Sorry.
I’ve gotten used to that. I think
they’re going to get married one of these days.” He looked at the still blushing Gaara. “What do you say? We could just watch movies or something.”
Gaara nodded. “I’ve
never been one for much public attention.
I’m a private person.” Sasuke
smiled and put another item in the like column.
He would listen to Naruto and just make friends with the sand nin, but
it didn’t mean he couldn’t tally up the things he liked about the blushing
boy. Come to think of it, that blush
could go into the like column as well.
***************************
“You guys are no fun!” Naruto squealed as Sasuke and Gaara
settled down with a tub of ice cream between them. They’d changed into their pajamas and had a
stack of movies lined up to watch.
They’d decided to be anti-social instead of going to the party.
Sasuke shrugged. “I
don’t feel like celebrating tonight, Nar.
Just deal with it.”
Gaara watched the scene unfold quietly. When Naruto turned questioning eyes his
direction he just smirked. “Something
about a third-wheel that Kankuro said to me.
I think I will like this ‘movie night’ thing that Sasuke and I are going
to do, though.”
Naruto couldn’t help but smile. It was obvious that they would end up
together in the end. He sighed. “Fine!”
He stuck his tongue out at them.
“I’m leaving for Shino’s then.”
He smiled. “I’m not going to be
home tonight. So don’t worry about
waiting up for me.”
Sasuke rolled his eyes and waved Naruto out the door as he
stood up to put in the first movie.
“What do you want to watch, Gaara?
Something funny or something scary?”
Gaara shrugged. “I’ve
never watched a movie before. Pick
whichever one you think is best.”
Sasuke smiled and picked one of his personal favorites, The Princess Bride, from the pile. He sat down next to the tub of ice-cream
between them. “You’ve never seen a
movie. You’ve never had friends to hang
out with. What did you do for
entertainment?”
Gaara’s eyes darkened with sorrow. “I wasn’t allowed to have fun. My village, my father, saw me as a weapon and
nothing more.” His eyes brightened a little. “I was allowed to read.”
Sasuke smiled.
Instead of skipping previews, as he would normally do, he decided to use
the time to talk to Gaara. “What kind of
books do you like?”
Gaara smiled back. “All
of them, really. I like fiction more than
non-fiction though. I guess I like the
escape.”
Sasuke shrugged. “I
can relate. I don’t think reality is all
it’s cracked up to be. You know?”
Gaara nodded. He knew
far too well how much reality sucked.
Although, he had to admit that reality had been a lot better since
meeting and befriending Naruto. The
movie menu had popped up. Sasuke grabbed
the remote and started the movie. “You
don’t mind if I put on the captions, do you?”
Gaara shook his head, though he wasn’t sure what captions
were. Sasuke clicked a button on the
remote and the dialogue appeared on the screen.
Gaara smiled. “That’s wonderful.”
Sasuke nodded. “Sometimes
you just don’t know what the characters are saying. I know it’s the way the directors want it,
but it drives me nuts if I don’t know the exact wording of the line.”
Gaara smiled and grabbed his spoon to dig into the
ice-cream. He had a feeling this was
going to be a night that he would cherish for years to come.
*****************************
Naruto whistled as he headed over to Shino’s. He sighed when he saw a distressed looking
Deidara coming his way. Naruto sighed
and waited until Deidara was next to him.
“Walk with me,” he said.
Deidara nodded and tagged along beside Naruto. “Did anyone bother to threaten Sasuke about
hurting me?” He couldn’t help the
bitterness and the hurt in his voice.
Naruto sighed and pulled the obviously distraught man into
an embrace. He let Deidara cry on his
shoulder. “Actually, Dei, I did. So did Shikamaru.”
He sighed and pulled back, wiping his eyes. “I don’t know what to do. I’ve never loved anyone before. I’ve never been the one who had my heart
broken.”
Naruto smiled sadly. “I
know, Dei-dei-chan.” Deidara managed a
half-glare at the nickname. “You’ll do
one of two things after a mourning a period.
You’ll go back to being the playboy you were before you met Sasuke or
you’ll find someone else you want to have a relationship with. You might get hurt again, but that’s just
part of being in a relationship.”
Deidara sighed and nodded.
“As long as someone warned Sasuke about not hurting me, I guess I’ll be
all right.” He turned and headed back
toward his apartment. Naruto shook his
head before continuing to Shino’s apartment.
Shino smiled when he answered the door. “Took you long enough.”
Naruto smirked. “I
had to help Deidara nurse his broken heart.”
Shino snorted. The idea of
Deidara’s heart being broken seemed ridiculous to him, but at the look on
Naruto’s face he knew it was true.
Shino shrugged. “You
want to head to the festival then?”
Naruto nodded. They
walked hand in hand down the street. This
was the night they stopped making any effort to keep their relationship
secret. This had become something that
could withstand any scrutiny. Naruto
smiled as Shino handed him a small box. “It’s
not much. I just wanted to get something
so you know how much I care.”
Naruto laughed. “I
know you care without a present.” He
stopped on the street and pulled the lid off the box. It really wasn’t anything much all things
considered, but he smiled anyway. He
pulled the leather cuff from the box. “Does
this have a sexier purpose than protecting my wrist?”
Shino laughed and shook his head. “I’m afraid not.”
Shikamaru and Neji saw their friends and smiled. “Hey, you coming or not?” Neji hollered
out. Shikamaru smirked and kissed his
husband softly before tugging on his arm.
Neji shrugged. “You’re a bad
influence on me.”
Shikamaru sighed. “Shut
it. You know I’m not.” Shikamaru leaned in and whispered in Neji’s
ear. “I thought I’d just proved that to
you.”
Neji giggled. “I don’t
think so.” He grabbed Shikamaru’s hand
and took off sprinting to the spot they’d promised to meet Chouji.
Naruto and Shino caught up with Neji and Shikamaru just as
they reached their appointed meeting place.
Chouji had said he was bringing a date with. Everyone was curious who it could be. They almost all stopped dead in their
tracks. Chouji was currently handing the
last of his cotton candy to Temari.
Chouji had to have it bad for the girl to give over the last of any kind
of food. Shikamaru smirked at his
friend. “Temari, you must have magic
powers, getting the last of Chouji’s food.”
Chouji glared at Shikamaru. “No.”
Shikamaru smiled and held his hands up in apology. “Where are your brothers?”
Temari shrugged. “Gaara
decided to have movie night in with Sasuke instead of coming because Kankuro
made him feel like an ass by telling him he’d be a third wheel. And the ass that is Kankuro is busy with some
blondie he met at the tournament.”
Temari licked her fingers clean of the sticky sugar that clung to her
after she finished the cotton candy.
Chouji stared at the tongue that he had all ready found out
was devilishly good at other things.
They’d been making out almost nonstop since the end of the tournament,
after the little Neji/Shikamaru skirmish.
He reached out to grab her hand and finished cleaning her fingers for
her. She blushed at the intensity of
that stare, but wanted more. She leaned
forward and kissed Chouji feverishly.
Shino started to laugh.
He couldn’t help himself. Even
around Naruto his laughs were generally quiet and reserved: a little chuckle at
the most. Now though, he was
roaring. His eyes were watering. It wasn’t the thought of Chouji being with a
girl. He knew his friend would make a
remarkable boyfriend to some lucky girl.
It was the thought that shy Chouji was now passionately kissing a girl
in front of them. Shikamaru nudged
Neji. “We’re going to take off. You can find us when it’s time for the
fireworks.”
Naruto grabbed the still hysterical Shino and waved. “Us too.”
He slapped Shino’s shoulder lightly.
“Knock it off. I’m surprised you
didn’t make him run away from her.”
Shino quit laughing. “Sorry,”
he mumbled as they too ran off in a different direction than Shikamaru and
Neji.
Chouji broke the kiss and smiled at Temari. “I hate that you’ll be leaving.”
Temari nodded. “I
know. I’m glad that I got this time with
you though. I have something to bring me
back to Konoha quite frequently.”
Chouji blushed. “You’re
mean, you teasing little minx.”
Temari nodded. “You
have no idea yet, little man.” Chouji
laughed at the comment. He knew he was a
husky boy, but that was part of being in the Akamichi clan. As soon as he’d explained to Temari about his
clan, she had given him the name little man.
He wanted to be insulted, but he couldn’t find it in him.
***************************
Shikaku sighed as he sat at the bar with his friends. “I can’t believe all our kids are grown up.”
Yamanaka Inoichi sighed and took a gulp of his sake. “I can’t believe your kid landed a Hyuuga.”
Shikaku chuckled. “It
is weird to realize we’ll be on the ‘family’ list for Hyuuga events these days.” He smiled softly. “He seems too young to be married. I know I was just as young, but that doesn’t
change things. 17 is just too young for
that kind of thing.”
Hiashi and Akamichi Chouza walked into the bar. Chouza spoke first. “Figured we’d find you bums here sulking.”
Shikaku laughed. “We’re
not sulking.” He smiled at his new
relative by marriage. “I was just
bemoaning the sorrow that is the loss of my only son.”
Hiashi chuckled. “It’s
lonely without Neji in the manor, too.”
He sighed and stole a sip of Shikaku’s sake. “I came to ask if you wanted to watch the
fireworks with me and some of my friends.”
Shikaku shrugged as he looked at Inoichi. “What about it? Ino’s not coming looking for you tonight,
right?”
Inoichi smirked. “Last
I saw she’d gotten her claws into the puppet master from Sand.”
Chouza laughed. “Chouji’s
got the girl.”
Hiashi smiled. “You’ll
all be welcome at the Hyuuga tent. And
if your children and their friends care to join us, we’d be honored.”
Hiashi left the former teammates to themselves. He figured they would most likely make their
way to the tent after some time talking about the past. He hoped his nephew and his husband would
show up. He had something he wanted to
give them now that the wedding and everything was settled and they’d properly
moved into their home and the exams were done.
He wanted to wait until they could fully enjoy his gift.
