Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Chapter 18 is a really long one ( about 3200 words).
Maybe its not as satisfying for you guys as I hoped it would be. But I did my best... After this writer's block I felt Really insecure about continuing. But what hurts me most as passionate fanfiction reader is when a story just ends without a proper ending, when the author just stops to continue.
So it might not be the best fanfiction you ever read, but I will finish it, although I find it really hard to do so.
Here comes Chapter 18 <3
_____________________________________
Hinata could feel her heart breaking apart as she held Gaara's limb body in her arms, pressing him against her chest, crying uncontrollably.
He didn't move, he didn't breathe.
Screaming in pain she hoped someone would come to help her, to help Gaara. Her heart stopped, tears were streaming down her pale face. The screams escaping her lungs sent shivers down the spines of the Suna nins who watched them.
Temari was on her knees, burying her face in her hands as she tried to understand what had happened. Right in front of her, her brother had died. Her little brother who finally had found someone who truly loved and cared for him except her and Kankuro.
"AAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!" she yelled and screamed in pain, though her pain slowly turned into an uncontrollable rage, she felt rising inside of her like a hot ball of lava. Her shaking hands still hold onto Gaara's dead body, she gently rocked back and forth, trying to comfort him, trying to tell him she was there. Although she knew, he would never know…
"G-Gaara…" she sobbed, stroking his cheek softly, her tears falling down onto his cold face.
"Gaara, wake up" she whispered.
"Please, wake up. I need you. Do you hear me? I need you! I love you! Come back to me!" she pleaded, leaning down to kiss his cold lips, covering her owns in his blood.
The moment she tasted the iron of his blood,
The rage she felt inside increased dramatically. She heard her heart beat like a giant drum, blood rushed through her veins, adrenalin kicked in. Sand swirls started to build next to them. Her blood was boiling, her heart was pounding so hard, she thought it would jump out of her chest at anytime. A weird, though familiar feeling spread through her body.
Temari watched Hinata as a strange formation took place on her body.
Her long black hair got short and lighter, it took a light brown color. Her body, who was now flying a few feet above the ground, was covered in sand, like Gaara's sand armor. Temari gasped.
"That's not possible" she whispered and watched as Hinata turned into an exact replica of her mother, Karura.
Karura rose her hands, sand dripping down her limbs, and balled them into tight fists.
Sandstorms build around her, even more powerful ones that Gaara had. They stood about two times higher than the Kazekage tower.
The noise was so loud that Temari had to cover her ears with her hands.
The earth was quaking, the sky was turning black, thunder mixed with the sound of the storms Karura had build.
"Mother" Temari whispered unbelieving. She wasn't sure if she could trust her eyes. Her mother flew in the air about 6 feet off the ground, her arms raised in front of her, her hands still turned into fists, her eyes were narrowed and wore the same yellow star sign in them like Shukaku had.
Her mother was a mixture of Sand, human and demon who demonstrated all of her remaining power, that she had sealed within the tiny Hyuga.
She looked frightening and Temari could see the shocked and surprised faces from the Suna villagers and ninjas. They all looked terrified and scared, though some also filled with pain due to the loss of their beloved Gaara and the look at their former Kazekage's wife. They had loved her. All of them. She had been a wonderful person. Strong, caring, loving, decent. The complete opposite of her tyrant of a husband.
After almost 20 years there she was, showing her village what powers she had to offer when someone had the nerve to attack her children.
And as Karura moved her hands in swift and trained movements a massive cloud of sand started crashing down onto Gaara's body.
Temari screamed in shock as she watched how the dead body of her little brother got buried by her sand.
Why would she do that?? The blond girl thought. She had been 10000% positive that Karura would help him or destroy the whole village. But she hadn't expected her to attack her own son.
She jumped off of the wall, down to Gaara, trying to protect him from coming pain and suffer.
But the huge Karura demon slowly sank to the ground, her hair getting longer and longer, turning black again. By the time the unconscious body reached the bottom, Karura had turned back into Hinata.
"Hinata!" Temari heard Kankuro screaming from afar. She turned her head to see him jumping down the wall next to her, to see if she was alright.
Matsuri POV
Matsuri stood on top of the wall, looking down at the three sand siblings, the most powerful ninjas Suna had. Two of them held onto limb bodies while they tried to find a pulse, to get them awake. Both of them softly crying from shock, anger, pain and fear that they might have lost not only one beloved person… But two…
She swallowed heavily as she watched the scene in front of the Suna gates with tears in her eyes. The moment she heard Kankuro sobbing silently, she raised her voice.
"People of Suna. I know, we are stubborn and leery people. For 20 years now Suna had always been scared of the Jinchuuriki the old Kazekage had created." she saw how many villagers and even ninjas raised their heads to look at her.
"But Gaara is not a monster. He grew past his aggressive, deadly demon. He learned to control him and then he lost him. But our Kazekage never stopped torturing his own son for being the monster he himself had created. Gaara does not deserve this hate. He deserves our respect and our support. For he would have been the successor of the tyrant we had called Kazekage." gasps of shock rang to her ears, as well as her lovers silent cries for his brother and friend.
"Rasa was cruel, he let people suffer, he let people starve, he tortured them to death. Old people who wouldn't be able to work anymore, children who started stealing because they didn't have food. Is this a Kazekage you loved to follow? Is this a Kazekage we should look up to?" murmurs were heard, they became louder with every word that left Matsuris lips.
"Gaara and Hinata did us a favor by killing him! We would have all died, sooner or later."
Agreement became louder and louder, but also some few people who started raging due to her words.
"Maybe it's time for e new Era in Suna. Maybe it's time for a change" she screamed and people followed her.
"Maybe it's time for a RIOT!!!!!" the moment those words left her mouth she saw how ninja started to attack ninja, villager attacked villager, villager attacked ninja. She knew from various occasions in her hospital that most of the people in Suna had been against their Kazekage but had been afraid to say it nor to start a Riot on their own.
In the first 5 years of her job in the hospital most of the people she had treated were ones who had been close to death due to the lack off food or water while the Kazekage had eaten like a king. He… And his companions, his closest advisers and nins.
After those 5 years one of his advisers had come to her to tell her that the Kazekage had stopped funding the hospital for those "paltry and useless" homeless. A lot of people died, although Matsuri secretly tried to help those people by visiting them at home. For many people her help had been to late while the Kazekage hid in his tower, ate for five people and tried to kill his own son.
Suna needs a change. And I needed a distraction to get Gaara and Hinata out of the battle zone.
When everyone's eyes were occupied with someone who was not their opinion (Kazekage follower against Riot) she jumped down the wall, first next to Kankuro and Hinata, then next to Gaara and Temari.
"Carry him to the hospital. Kankuro is on his way with Hinata. We're gonna meet there!" Matsuri yelled over the battle noises in Suna.
Temari nodded and put Gaara's arm over her shoulder. A few seconds later she had already disappeared behind the gates of Suna.
Hinata's POV
It was chilly inside the room when Hinata opened her eyes again. The last thing she remembered was how she had held Gaara in her arms, crying and telling him that she loved him. And Karura telling her to let go, to trust her for she would rescue Gaara.
When she snapped out of her dreamless state, she sat up immediately, looking around for Gaara.
"Gaara?!" she screamed hysterically when she didn't see him anywhere near.
"Shh… Calm down, Hina. Temari and Matsuri are taking care of him.. You need to stay quiet.. We are in the hospital and you need to rest!" Kankuro sat next to her bed, his eyes red, his purple make up smudged and ruined.
Without a word Hinata stood up, realizing that it was the sky was dark, still the streets were light as day.
When she looked out of the window her eyes grew wide.
Suna was burning. Almost the whole city was lit up, the houses, the small stores, even the Kazekage’s tower stood in proud flames.
"What happened…" Hinata whispered as she let herself fall down to bed again, her head turned into Kankuro's direction.
"Matsuri started a riot. The whole city was fighting. Thank God, there were more people who hated my father than the ones who tried to fight for him, even after his death.
The remaining Suna villagers and nins are trying to control the fire." he answered clamly, though his voice was drenched with sorrow.
"What about the Kazekages companions?" she asked, getting stiff at the thought of how many people must had died during this fight.
"We locked them in the cells. The ones who tried to lay a hand in you, are now all on your old cell." he answered dryly.
"But that barely fits two person when the gates are closed" she stated.
Kankuro chuckled deeply.
"Yeah… Temari and I thought that they needed some special treatment. And since they tried to hurt our sister in law…"
He didn't need to finish his sentence. Hinata already knew that they had to be in a very bad condition. Broken bones at least and now locked in a tiny cell with four.
Finally Hinata could spell out the words that had laid on her heart heavy.
"What happened to Gaara?" she whispered, afraid of Kankuro's answer.
"We don't know yet. We didn't find a pulse when he brought him here.. But Matsuri is trying her best" his face turned downwards, he buried it in his hands, his body shivering.
Hinata knew he was crying.
Swallowing hard, she stood up and took one of his hands in hers, pulling him up to embrace him in a tight and comforting hug. She knew, even if she loved Gaara with all her heart, Kankuro was his brother and he needed comfort as well. If not even more than she needed it.
"We should be there for him, Kankuro. Let's go" she whispered in his ear and felt him nod slightly.
"Gaara" a voice he had almost forgotten called his name. Everything around him was white. Except him and the woman in front of him who reached out her hand for him.
"Mother?" he asked confused and let her help him stand up.
"Gaara, my dear. It is so nice to see you" her soothing, calm voice comforted his senses. There she was, finally. His mother Karura. He actually hold her hand, he actually heard her voice, he saw her loving smile, her beautiful eyes and her tousled, sandy hair.
Without another word he pressed forward into her arms, lying his head on her chest while she chuckled softly and ran her hands through his crimson hair.
Tears streamed down his face while he sobbed into her shoulder.
"My little Gaara. I missed you so much"
"I missed you, too!" he answered, sobbing heavily. His voice sounded strange and he pulled away for a second just to see that he wasn't the grown up Gaara but the little kid of 7 who had always dreamed of meeting his mom again. Soon he hugged her again, not minding his change as long as she was there.
After some time she pulled away gently.
"Gaara, there is a reason, why I am here." she rested her hands on his shoulder and kneeled to be at his height.
"You're beautiful wife needs you. It's not the time for you to die."
"But how am I supposed to get back?" little Gaara asked curious, wiping his tears of joy away.
"When you were born I sealed not only the racoon demon inside of you. I also put some of my chakra into your body with Chiyo's help. This way I had the possibility to protect you, to be there with you, to watch you grow. When you met Hinata and you were in danger I put my chakra into her body, because if I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to protect you anymore. Hinata was worried that she couldn't help you the same way as I would. So she held my chakra inside until this ninja pierced you with a spear…" she lowered her head shortly, then again locked eyes with him.
"To protect you, Hinata allowed to set me free again. It's really hard to explain… But… we sealed my chakra back into your body, to help you recover from the injury. Hinata agreed although she knew that she could risk her life" Gaara gasped in shock.
"Hinata needs you now. And I have plans for you and your beautiful wife. Go back to her, live a wonderful life. And become the Kazekage, like I had planned and organized before you were born. Your fathers and my Testament is hidden in the old library of Suna. He never bothered to look at the content…"
Gaara just nodded. So much information. So much feelings. He didn't know what to do right now.
Just like Karura had heard his thoughts, she kissed his forehead and cheeks softly.
"Just close your eyes and concentrate on your body. Feel the blood, feel your chakra combining with mine, let my chakra heal you. It will be the last remaining chakra of me. To save your life…"
"It means, I will never see you again after today?" Gaara asked silently.
"Unfortunately not… But I'm always here" she laid her hand on his chest right above his heart.
"Close your eyes now, my dear. Start the life you deserve with Hinata and your siblings by your side.
I love you, Gaara. I always have and I always will."
Before Gaara closed his eyes, he hugged her again and whispered:
"I love you, too, Mom"
Days went by. Still Gaara didn't wake up. Hinata was awake for the fourth day in a row, waiting for her beloved to finally open his eyes again. Softly she laid her hand on his cheek, gently brushing it with the backside. She watched his flawless features, his black-rimmed eyes, his messy, crimson hair. She waited for Karura to do her work. She had told his siblings about it. They didn't believe it at first. Still they kept on waiting, just like she did.
"I brought something to eat" Temari whispered as she closed the door behind her and placed the food in front of Hinata.
A deep sigh followed from the blond kunoichi.
"Hina… Maybe… we should start preparing the ceremony… I'm about to lose hope… and letting his dead body lying here is disrespectful for him. He needs to keep some of his dignity…"
For days they had been telling Hinata, thinking she might have fallen in some state of madness after holding Gaara's dead body in her arms.
She nodded slowly. And Temari eyes opened wide. It hurt her to see that even Hinata seemed to have lost hope. Still she was also relieved that the former leaf village woman still noticed what was happening around her.
Her eyes were cloudy, she wore big, dark circles, her skin was fallow. She looked like a living dead.
"Just this night, Temari, okay? If he is not awake until tomorrow morning, I will help you organize his funeral…" her strained and husky voice was weak and silent.
"Alright…" Temari nodded and sat next to her.
"Here. Eat something. You don't have to finish it, alright?" Hinata nodded again, slowly as if she was too weak to do it in a normal speed.
For four days Hinata hadn't Really slept, nor had she eaten, or anything. She just sat there, holding Gaara's hand, wishing and praying and hoping for him to finally come back to her. Just as Karura had told her.
Hours passed, the sun started to set. Hinata sat at Gaara's side, looking at him with tears burning in her tired eyes.
She remembered the moment her father had told her, she had to move to Suna, how shocked and pained she had felt and how scared she had been. She had started crying and hadn't stopped for two days straight.
Now, she couldn't imagine to ever leave again. And she had only been here for a really short time though she had fallen in love with Suna, its villagers, Temari and Kankuro and most importantly…
She had fallen in love with Gaara.
She had fallen for him completely. And she knew there was nothing that would ever change that. They understood each other on a deeper level than Hinata had ever experienced. They didn't need much words nor actions. They shared a really deep bond, on which Hinata couldn't quite lay a hand on.
With a shaking hand she laid hers on his cold one, gently squeezing it, her breath hitched as she tried to stop herself from crying, from losing her hope completely.
"Please Gaara, come back to me." she whispered, running her hand through his hair. Tears fell down her face. She felt so weak, so empty, so helpless. He just had to come back. She couldn't imagine living without him.
But she got no response.
Five hours later it was midnight. Still no sign of life in Gaara's body.
"Hina" Kankuro whispered and laid a hand on her shoulder.
"Try to sleep a little, okay?"
Weakly she nodded and sighed.
"Do you think he is going to wake up?" she asked, looking at him with red, swollen eyes.
Kankuro swallowed.
"I don't know…" he murmured, took her hand in his and stroke it softly.
"I'm gonna go to bed, Hina. It's the room next to you. If you need something, just wake me up."
She nodded again and put her hand on Gaara's bed, next to his hand. For the first time in four days, Hinata allowed herself to fall asleep. And she fell fast, within seconds.
Hot Blood started boiling in the veins of the dead body. It started rushing through them like a giant river, warming up his cold, limb arms, hands, legs and feet. When it reached the heart, the blood ran with full speed, full power, like a blood cpr, mixing with the cold one that still lingered in his veins. The huge wound of the spear that had pierced the pale skin started to heal, slowly, though permanent. Electricity started to build.
Like a light bolt, energy shot in the dead body, making the heart beat again, the organs work, the lungs breathe.
And he opened his eyes, heavily gasping for air.
