Kakashi and his team left the next morning on the return escort and by the time they reached the lord’s home (safely returning him, his family, and the attendants as expected), there was a scroll from the Hokage waiting for them. They had orders to find Suigetsu and take him out if possible. He sighed wistfully, more time away from Anko.
With Kakashi’s ninja hounds and Shino’s insects doing recon, Sakura was left as a tagalong. She did what she could to busy herself gathering medicinal herbs and fishing for nicer dinners than rations, but there wasn’t much she could do to contribute at this point. She hoped her abilities wouldn’t be needed, but she knew Suigetsu’s skills with a sword and he reportedly had 3 of the seven swordsmen’s blades collected.
They located his camp in a cave on the bank of a river. Of course, he would stay near the water. And he was alone. Evidently his proclivity for dismembering his own companions had left him unable to persuade anyone to apprentice with him. Thank god he had at least that as a weakness.
They designed a simple push-pull strategy to get him away from the water and on open ground. Since Sakura was the weakest of them at ranged attacks, she would be the bait, try to get him into a genjutsu, and get out of the way for Kakashi and Shino if the genjutsu was broken. They moved into position, waiting in stealth until Suigetsu came into the target zone. When he did, Sakura’s genjutsu was fast, but he overcame it in an instant. “Oh look, Samehada. Three ninjas for your breakfast.” He ran straight for Sakura. At least that part of the plan was working. She pulled him back from the river, firing off a handful of poisoned needles as Kakashi and Shino closed the gap on him.
Sakura dodged a deflected a flurry of water bullets with a kunai in each hand. Kakashi hit him from the side with a lightning bolt, which drew the water bullet fire to him, giving Sakura time to leap out of range. They had him in an open field now, well away from the water he loved to use. A swarm of wasps came at the sword wield from the other side; he managed to drown all but two in a wave of water. He smiled, “I see what you’ve done here. She’s the medic.” And he went straight for Sakura. She deflected another series of water bullets and managed to dodge a wave as she threw two more groups of needles that were promptly deflected. Unfortunately, that dodge meant she landed in the range of Samehada. Sakura was dodging and deflecting furiously with her kunai, trying unsuccessfully to get distance. Kakashi was throwing lightning bolts and Shino put a clone in. The clone was promptly demolished. Shino jumped in front of Sakura, taking a deep wound to his torso but allowing her to jump away. At the same moment, Kakashi hit the water swordsman from behind with a perfectly placed shidori, turning their opponent into an unconscious pile of goo. Sakura stepped in and injected the goo with poison to be sure he was dead.
She turned to Shino who was on the ground, bleeding profusely. She glanced at Kakashi who’d taken a water bullet to the ankle but appeared otherwise unharmed. That could wait. Shino would be dead in less than an hour. Of course, she’d be dead if he hadn’t done something, but this was bad. Time for her medical hat. Show no alarm. “Okay Shino, let’s take care of this.” She threw an ice pack and a bandage at Kakashi, “Use those, you’re going to need to walk in about 2 minutes.” Kakashi tried not to look at Shino’s face. They were all doing their best to stay calm and they all knew it was a dangerous wound. She used her chakra to seal off most of the bleeding and wrapped him in a quick bandage. She used a scroll from her med kit and produced a stretcher. She gently rolled Shino on to it and motioned to the limping Kakashi, “Let’s get him back to camp. I’ll do surgery there. We’re going to need an evac assist.” Shino spoke up, “I can do it.” He made some hand signs and sent a messenger beetle off.
Sakura was on. The moment Shino was situated in the tent, she handed a bowl of herbs to Kakashi, “Please make tea.” Kakashi smiled, “my specialty.”
She hung up Shino’s jacket, knowing it’s valuable six-legged contents, and cut off his shirt. His left kidney was in two pieces, spleen severely damaged, bladder sliced open and his lower intestine was a mess. “Say goodnight Shino.” Sakura was poised to administer the anesthesia when his hand suddenly stayed hers.
“Sakura, promise me I’ll see you when I wake up.”
What an odd request. Still, she wanted her patient reassured, “Of course, Shino.” She kissed his forehead and put the needle into his IV.
Kakashi was confused, “but… what about his tea?”
“That’s for me Kakashi. Need you to lift it up for me. My hands are full.”
2 hours later, she closed the surgery, gulped a food pill and another cup of tea, and turned her attention to Kakashi’s leg. “I’m sorry for the wait Kakashi.”
He shrugged, “I understand. Thanks for taking such good care of Shino.”
“Of course.” Sakura removed Kakashi’s boot, carefully pried the sock and temporary bandage away from the wound, and cut his pants’ leg at the knee. “The only good thing about water bullets is you don’t have to find shrapnel.” She examined the wound carefully. The exit was a bit of a mess and likely to scar, but he’d be up walking in a few days. “This is going to hurt a lot. If I give you anesthesia, we are basically defenseless. Even if I don’t, you could pass out. Which option do you think is best?”
Kakashi summoned 3 ninja hounds and spoke with Pak-un. “Sakura needs to heal me, Shino just had emergency surgery. We need a perimeter kept although we are expecting an evacuation unit from Konoha.”
“You got it, Kakashi.” And the hounds set to their task.
Kakashi turned to the medic, “If I pass out or fall asleep naturally, they will stay here. Anesthesia would probably send them back. Please proceed.”
Sakura handed him a vial. “Drink this, it’s all I can give you for pain now, but it will help some.”
He poured the liquid down his throat as she set to her work on his ankle. An hour later, she had him pieced back together and bandaged up. “I swear Kakashi, if you try to walk on this, I will pound you into the ground myself.” Then she handed him a food pill, a cup of tea, and an empty jug. He looked at her quizzically with the last item. “In case you need to pee, Kakashi.”
She sat for a moment, popping another food pill herself and chugging another cup of tea for the long night ahead. Shino had better pull through.
