One by one the clone started investigating each place on the list hoping to find Naruto’s real home …

The members of team 8 and Naruto finally stopped to camp before it got too dark out. “We managed to travel a great distance. Only a few hours now. If we start early then maybe we can get there tomorrow right before the exam starts.” Kurenai mumbled, getting a little nervous about the bet. “Hey, Naruto. Could you fill up the canteens while we finish setting up camp?”
Naruto nodded as he finished putting his tent up and casually left a crystal inside it, “Sure. I’ll grab some fish while I’m at the stream.” Naruto said, taking note of the slightly relieved look in the genjutsu mistress’s eyes as he gathered everyone’s canteens. As he walked away from the campsite he turned on his earpiece so he could listen through the crystal he left in his tent.
‘By the time we get back there’s a chance that the chunin exams will be just starting if we’re lucky. We won’t have any time to really train together as a team.’ Kurenai said sound concerned about something.
Kiba could be heard chuckling, ‘If you’re worried about the training then don’t, sensei. I really don’t think Kakashi knows anything about Naruto’s skills at all. I’m telling you, he didn’t need my help and he’s far better at strategy than any of us thought.’
‘Agreed. Throw in the insane chakra storage that lets him pump out hundreds of clones in a few minutes without even breaking a sweat and he has to be chunin level already. We shouldn’t worry about that part.’ Shino said confidently.
Naruto raised an eyebrow as he arrived at the stream, (Why is my skill level a concern? Part of what?) He thought in the safety of his mind just in case though he couldn’t help but smile at the kindness in Shino’s tone.
‘Yes … yes, you’re both right.’ Kurenai commented and sighed. ‘That really only leaves the other part. We need to see what kind of information Hinata has found on the villagers and Naruto.’
As a canteen was opened and water from the stream flowed in, Naruto hummed thoughtfully, (Pretty sure Guren-sensei took care of Hinata so they don’t have that information.)

Hinata’s clone looked through the glass of the back window of a house. She tried to find the best angle to see the photos hanging on the walls. Each picture showed an old woman with a young child or a young man who looked like the child. There was even a striped cat with the child and a white cat with the young man. As interesting as the photos were, none of them showed what the clone wanted and there was no evidence of the blonde target anywhere in the house.
“Another one I can mark off.” The clone decided confidently as she crossed off the address from the list she took out of her pocket. “Only two left. I hope they’re easier to find than this one.” The clone mumbled right before jumping into the nearby trees that surrounded the home.
There was no doubt that it was an isolated home that Hinata was looking for. Despite fitting the bill by being deep in the woods this house definitely wasn’t Naruto’s. A hopeful clone rushed off through the trees towards the next address. While it was annoying to rack down, even for a ninja, Hinata’s clone couldn’t help but feel at peace at being so isolated.
No one could bother you so deep in these woods. No villagers or doctors or crazy hypochondriac relatives who freak out at a single sneeze. It was an option Hinata started considering for her future home as her clone searched for the next address on the list.

‘Considering what little I saw from that first shopping trip I’m positive there’s going to be plenty to save our hides from that stupid bet you got us stuck in.’ Kiba snickered clearly just trying to tease his sensei. The frightened, nervous chuckle that followed implied that Kurenai didn’t take kindly to the teasing.
‘Why don’t we finish setting up the campsite?’ Kurenai hissed threateningly and it was mainly silence or the sounds of a crackling fire after that.
(Bet? This is about a bet?! … wait. What he saw? … the shopping trip? … oh! He was awake!) Naruto groaned as he put the cap back on the canteen and began filling another.
For a moment Naruto forgot about that first day where he was basically dragged onto team 8. It just so happens that Kiba was being carried by Akamaru the entire day because he was supposedly out cold. If that wasn’t the case then Kiba definitely knows how the villagers’ act towards him when everyone else isn’t looking. Why were they investigating that? What bet is worth all this?
‘Yeah. It’s a bet with Kakashi.’ Guren’s voice suddenly popped up.
Naruto raised an eyebrow as he finished filling the last canteen, “Sensei? How-” Naruto face palmed as he realized that Guren was listening because he was using his earpiece. Of course Guren would be able to hear when she was the one who made the crystal earpiece in the first place and by putting his chakra in it to link with the one in the tent he probably inadvertently signaled her. “Right. How long have you known about this bet?” He asked as he pulled out a few kunai and sent a clone into the stream to scare up some fish.
‘Only a few weeks. Kakashi let slip that this bet involves a list of girls and Torune overheard. We wanted to get the reason why this crap involves you …I think this makes some sense now.’ Guren commented gleefully. ‘Ok … Kurenai goes to hurt Kakashi on your behalf. He angers her further, most likely, by saying something stupid about you and since she’s too pissed to think rationally this madness happens. It’s possible she also made the bet on your behalf too.’
As Naruto thought for a moment he threw a few kunai at the fish that jumped out of the water effectively pinning them to a tree, “On my behalf? In what way is exposing secrets a good thing for me? They … ok, maybe Kakashi doesn’t understand, but team 8 knows that the villagers hate me and yet they want to keep pushing. I’m in trouble with the villagers already thanks to Hinata’s meddling. If I try to display my skills at the chunin exams they may win the bet, but it could blow up in my face and Kurama’s.” Naruto said as his clone swam out of the stream and collected the fish. “Maybe we should tell them before something blows up.”
Guren sighed, “I’ll talk to the old pervs about it-‘
In that moment Naruto felt his clone pop and turned just in time to the fish and kunai floating in a bubble. He noticed several bubbles surrounding him, but they all suddenly popped creating a mist that temporarily blinded Naruto. However, it didn’t stop Naruto from arming himself with a kunai and throwing it at the person he sensed strangely moving upwards.
‘What’s going on?’ Guren exclaimed no doubt hearing a series of odd sounds like loud popping bubbles.
Naruto knew his kunai hit something when he heard a pop, but he knew he didn’t hit his attacker even though they landed on the ground. “What do you want?” Naruto asked his attacker as his sight came back, which was much faster than it should’ve been thanks to his tinted glasses. When he turned to see his attacker the blonde was surprised to see a young man with long brown hair and pale gold eyes wearing a bloody light blue kimono.
“You’re not … one of … Akatsuki?” The exhausted man pressed out weakly collapsed onto one knee.
‘Akatsuki?! Talk to me brat!’ Guren yelled so loudly that she made the blonde flinch.
Despite the ringing in his ears Naruto felt an icy fear settle in his gut as he rushed over to the guy, “One sec. I’m figuring it out!” He said as he created a clone to go grab the fish and weapons that fell to the ground.
The slender man pulled back as Naruto tried to help support him, “Go … I need to leave.” The man grunted in pain as he attempted to stand up only to cause blood to gush from his wounds.
“Whoa! Hold it! … shit, you have a seal on you.” Naruto gasped when he saw a seal that would probably cut off a good amount of a demon and its vessel’s chakra. “Your demon won’t be able to heal you with that seal so stop moving. It’s ok! I’m a demon vessel too-“
For a split second the man seemed to think he found an ally, but that quickly changed and the guy shoved Naruto away effectively sending Naruto back a few feet, “You don’t … have a demon!” Of course, the sudden and surprisingly strong motion strained his already bad wounds.
(Because of course he can sense that.) Naruto thought dryly as he got back up after that rather strong shove. “It’s a long story. Kurama isn’t in me now.” Naruto noticed the man perked up. “That’s right. I know the nine tailed fox’s real name … can I know your name and when you were attacked?” He asked as he risked getting close again so he could see the injuries.
After a couple weak breaths the man steadied himself, “I’m Utakata … hour ago. We … need to leave.”
Naruto froze, “You were attacked only an hour ago?” Naruto murmured knowing very well that if that was true then the Akatsuki could still be close by and that put them both in danger. After all, the Akatsuki only need to think that he’s the vessel attack. No one knows that Kurama isn’t in him anymore.
‘Damn! Get out of the area! I’m reporting this to the hokage. Encase his wounds in crystal if you have to. Just get moving and don’t stop or hold back.’ Guren was heard saying over the crystal earpiece.
“Ok, we’re going to hurry.” Naruto said and quickly began coating certain spots with slim crystal layers.
This time Naruto took the risk. Without wasting a second his clone helped Utakata onto Naruto’s back and took off straight for Konoha. The clone was ordered to return to team 8 with the fish and canteens to hopefully hide his disappearance. Unfortunately, he wasn’t sure if it’d work, but he really couldn’t waste a moment right now.
“Someone … nearby.” Utakata gasped softly in pain. The crystal bandages were stopping him from bleeding out, but it did nothing for the pain.
Naruto nodded, sensing someone between them and Konoha as well. The blonde dropped down from the trees and used a trench to hide themselves in. With a slight earth jutsu to bury any trace of them under a dirt covered crystal shield they waited for this presence to leave. Instead the person came closer and they sensed another person joining the person. As the danger crept closer Naruto caught a glimpse of a distinctive black cloak with red clouds from between the dirt granules on the dirt covered shield that hid them. It was the Akatsuki.

Hiruzen frowned as he looked out the window of the hokage’s office, “So many new ninjas visiting … it’ll be an interesting chunin exam.
“Yeah, I hope Naruto makes it.” Konohamaru mumbled softly.
“I think he might. Maybe you and Kurama can find him right before he comes home?” Hiruzen suggested and chuckled as his grandson seemed to light up.
Konohamaru immediately jumped up from the seat he was lounging on, “I’ll do that! I need to talk to Kurama about something anyway.”
The perverted old man grinned, “Oh! You mean about Naruto’s harem?!” He exclaimed and burst out laughing at the blush that exploded on his grandson’s face.
“Perv!” Konohamaru exclaimed before running out of the office window.
While trying to hide his embarrassment Konohamaru raced as fast as he could across the rooftops. Unfortunately, he didn’t see someone, who was rushing even faster than him, running straight at the tower. This person didn’t even bother to swerve to avoid Konohamaru and actually used the Sarutobi heir’s head as a launching pad. As a result Konohamaru went flying down to the ground and possibly on top of someone considering the grunt he heard under him.
“Konohamaru? Are you ok?” Konohamaru looked up while rubbing his sore head and saw Kurama next to him.
The raven groaned as he was helped to his feet, “Yeah. Who hit me? I didn’t even have a chance to dodge-“
“Or get off me!” The guy, who was covered in face paint and wearing a semi-serious kitty suit, that Konohamaru fell on snapped angrily.
Konohamaru immediately jumped off the guy while holding Kurama for support, “I’m sorry-“
The cat guy sat up and glared, “Fuck you, bit-“
The guy didn’t get a chance to say any more because Kurama kicked him into the nearest wall. With the jerk silenced and a shocked Konohamaru being dragged along, Kurama walked down the street. The fox demon only paused for a moment when he thought he sensed someone familiar nearby, but he shrugged it off and kept walking with Konohamaru.
“That idiot didn’t have to be rude. It was Guren’s fault not yours.” Kurama muttered, clearly very annoyed with the cat guy’s attitude.
Konohamaru chuckled sheepishly, “Yeah … so Guren stepped on me?” He asked, trying to remember exactly what happened before the cat guy ended up embedded in a wall.
“Yes. I was going to follow her to find out why she was rushing, but then you became a trampoline.” Kurama said as they walked through the deceitfully friendly village.
“Really? Wait, why are you out around here anyway? Didn’t think you’d want to put up with them, especially with it getting late?” Konohamaru muttered while gesturing to the two faced villagers who were all smiles even with the darkening sky.
Kurama sighed, “As much as I like avoiding them I needed to see how much tension there was before Naruto returns.” He said as he shook his head sadly. They went up into the treetops and headed for Naruto’s real home. “I don’t think Naruto will be safe when he comes back.” He said, implying that he overheard some nasty remarks when those smiles took a break.
“Perhaps we should go meet him before he arrives.” Konohamaru murmured shyly and blushed as the redhead looked at him with a teasing smile.
“Actually since you brought it up maybe we should chat about how big this harem will be.” Kurama said and was very pleased to see that Konohamaru looked more shy and curious than annoyed by what that might mean.
Being still shy about the subject Konohamaru stayed quiet as they went towards the home. Of course, the possibility of Naruto being with many guys was now crossing his mind. Unfortunately, it was crossing in some perverted ways. It wasn’t so bad, but any arousal at all was easy for a demon to sniff out.
Kurama smiled, “I’m glad the idea is exciting to you too.” He said cheerfully and jumped down to the ground mere feet away from the cozy cottage next to a stream with the spinning water wheel attached to its side.
“You’re as perverted as grandpa.” Konomaru whimpered and jumped down next to Kurama, but noticed that the redhead suddenly lost his cheer and was sniffing the air. “Is something wrong?”
“Perhaps.” Kurama stepped up to the window sill and smelled it. “I smell Hinata’s scent.”
